what's growing on gardeners it's Tuesday June 18th and the hottest driest weather of the year is here on the Southeastern coast of North Carolina and on today's video I'm going to show you the easiest laziest way to water your plants and the best part is not only will you not have to handw waterer any of these plants again but you won't have to set up any drip irrigation either if you're new to the Channel Please Subscribe and hit the Bell to receive new video notifications and check out our Amazon store and spread shop links in the video description for everything I use in my garden and awesome custom designed apparel and other gear your support is greatly appreciated here in the coastal southeast United States we have a defined rainy season and typically June is one of our wetest months but for whatever reason this year we can't get a drop of rain to save our life and everything is drying up things are so hot and dry here that I've even had to handw waterer my inground fruit trees that have been planted for years and are fairly well established that is how hot and dry things have been and now I'm starting to know just how so many of you across the country that deal with persistent summer drought feel you see I learned many years ago that drought tolerant fruit trees are a myth there are no real drought tolerant fruit trees for example fig trees are thought to be drought tolerant because they grow in the Mediterranean where it is hot and dry and doesn't rain at all during the summer but in their native habitat they grow in Limestone rich soil and those Limestone Pockets trap water from the rainy season season so even though it doesn't rain in the summers in the Mediterranean because their spider-like Roots dig deep into those Limestone pockets they access that moisture that's built up from the rainy season so even though it's not raining they are actually growing in moisturer soil now here in Southeastern North Carolina I'm growing these fig trees on straight up beach sand this soil is as Sandy as it gets and it doesn't hold on to moisture so if I do not deeply water these trees during these hot dry periods the trees start coming down with rust and then the leaves turn yellow and they start defoliating this happened to me several years ago when we had a really dry May and June my fig trees looked horrible come July and I'm not making that mistake ever again I also learned the hard way several years ago with my pineapple guava also known as a f jooa tree you see I was told that these were extremely drought tolerant and while the plant is drought tolerant it is not drought tolerant as a fruit tree you see it was loaded with fruit and then we went through a two or three week hot and dry period and the tree reacted by dropping all of its fruit to go into almost like a drought dorcy period so I wound up having almost no Harvest that year because of it and my giomo Pim tree well last year it had a mighty crop on it but again we went through a very hot dry period in late spring early summer as is typical and it started dropping its fruit like crazy but I did not let that happen this year I wanted to desperately protect my Harvest so I have taken desperate counter measures so basically what I've learned over the years is that if you're growing a fruit tree and then you have a period of prolonged heat and drought where the soil itself loses its moisture the tree will react by dropping its crop to preserve its moisture levels and kind of go into like a semi dorcy to protect itself and then you'll just have a glorified ornamental and I don't want to lose my crop so the method that I've been doing for a few years now during these PR long drought periods is to basically take a hose and then run them for a few minutes at the base of every single tree about twice a week during these hot dry periods and I have to tell you all of the fruit trees that I have growing I have so many now that that takes like 2 hours to do that and keep moving the hose all over the place it is just not sustainable now if you've been following my channel for a long time you know that I am a huge fan of drip irrigation I have it run to all of the beds in my garden in fact I just fired it up and you may be able to hear it right now so I did for a while there consider running drip irrigation to all of my trees because it works so well in my garden well I don't really want to do that because we only get one or two of these periods of drought every single spring and summer and it's just not worth the time and the money in my opinion to run drip irrigation to all of my trees to only use a few times a year it's different in my garden because I use it all throughout the year even in the fall and the winter when it gets a little bit cooler so it's a huge Advantage for me there but I think most people in my situation wouldn't want to run all of those drippers and all of that drip line all around their entire yard just to deal with a 2 or 3 we period once every anom so I put on my engineering cap and thought to myself is there a better way and if you watch this channel you know that I came up with something you see my knee-jerk reaction was to initially look at soer hose but I can't stand that stuff because it just doesn't work well the rubber that they use it releases almost all of the water and the first 25% of the hose the next 25% of the hose gets a little bit of the water and the second half of the hose it's like it drips nothing it's really poorly designed and I've never had any good luck with it but I think I came up with a better solution I found an awesome product called sprinkler hose and I think this is exactly what I'm looking for I saw this product on Amazon and I just had to give it a try now first off I did buy this with my own money so I will be trying this out on this video pretty much in real time I've never used this before so if this works really well and you're interested in it I will place a link down in the video description now it was inexpensive so I bought a two pack of it which is two 50ft hoses and look it comes with a manual and it has all of these um these steel Garden Staples to try and hold it down so as you can see it comes with two of them and you can install it in an Orient ation that both plugs this up so you can use this as an individual hose or you could unplug this and then connect them together so you can basically install infinite lengths of hoses so I guess you could install 20 of these in series and have 1,000 foot long dripper if you really wanted to but I'm going to try these out one at a time and this is cool they also have additional hose ends and washers that's great now this looks like to be a much better product than soaker hose that rubber hose like I said it's very inefficient this is pre-drilled it has laser Hole uh laser drilled holes uh every certain amount of space I don't really know what the spacing is but when you have it standing up it's supposed to shoot up in the air like a sprinkler and then when you lie it down it is supposed to work like a drip uh a dripper so basically you'd be pressing the drippers up against the ground and then you would be securing them in the ground with a garden staple and this would be great because I can simply roll this out in a few minutes around all of my fruit trees during the dry periods plug a hose into the back of it and then just run it for an hour or two when I get these dry periods and then when it's over I can just roll it up for the rest of the year and put it away so my thought is a product like this would be perfect for somebody that is looking for temporary or semi-permanent drip irrigation and doesn't want to set up a permanent system and this is so cheap and so easy to install it really just can't be beat for for this type of situation so I'm going to take this unroll it plug a hose into the back and then we'll see how it works okay Color Me impressed is this not really cool I mean this is awesome I mean look at the way the the water is shooting out and it is just dancing and it is very gentle so if you wanted to this is probably something that a lot of young kids would have a lot of fun running through and what is really cool about this is the even distribution of the water so here is where the hose starts well when you get to soaker hose usually the back half of the hose performs very poorly but because these are laser drilled every however many inches they do it uh it's actually holding consistent pressure throughout the entire hose so obviously this is the hose in the upward orientation well in this orientation it acts as an overhead Mister but when you flip it so the white line is up against the ground it will act as a drip irrigation system look at that is that not amazing so what I'm going to do is I'm going to take that hose and I'm going to weave it behind all of my drought sensitive trees now it looks like I do have a small error in my design what I should have done was I should have purchased a short lead in hose so I could bring the lead in hose out into my lawn to easily plug my feeder hose into but that's not a big problem I'll go out and I'll buy one of them I'll also place a link to some lead in hoses down in the video description for your convenience for the time being until it arrives I'm going to have to crawl back here to plug in the feeder hose but that being said no problem now remember when running the sprinkler hose behind our trees we want to make sure that the stripe is actually facing down this is where the water comes out of if you face the stripe up it will act as a sprinkler in the air we want to lie it down so it functions as a drip line so I'm going to take the included Landscaping Staples and a rubber mallet and just lightly tap it into the ground to secure the hose and we are going to add one of these Landscaping Staples I don't know every 5 ft or so uh however many we get that's included in the package just do the best that you can you just want to make sure that the pressure of the drippers shooting out doesn't lift up the hose so now I'm going to take the hose and run it behind the trees so I ran my guard hose over to feed the system and I just plugged it in and turned it on and wow I am already incredibly impressed you can see all the water coming out and you can hear it that hose in the back is dripping up a storm and you may be asking yourself why did I run it behind my fig trees well because if I ran it in front of my fig trees it would leak out onto the lawn I have to water in the rear so all of that water gets preserved for the trees and it doesn't leech into the grass and then the hose is running behind that raised bed with my melons in it it's running behind the pentry and then the feeder uh the end of the hose rather is right here so it fit in this bed perfectly and you can see the end cap there so I can actually attach another hose onto it and then the goal is to take that second hose and then run it all the way to these fig trees so all of these trees will get coverage and that is exactly why I bought the two pack so I have two 50ft hoses so I just installed 50 ft of drip irrigation in 10 minutes and it was so easy and I will be able to install the other 5050 ft in another 10 minutes I've been making videos in my garden for a long time now and because I've been making them for so long I've seen a lot of things and it's made me pretty jaded but I truly didn't even know that this product existed and I am so excited about this my inner Millennial is starting to come out this is like straight up super cool dude I am really happy that I found this I didn't know that this product was a thing so I've been painstakingly watering these trees for several Summers now unnecessarily during these dry spells and in the amount of time that it takes for me to water three or four trees I set up an entire 50 ft of drip irrigation unbelievable if you suffer from these same dry spells that I do I urge you to get a product like this you can connect as many in series as you want and if you have a small garden only a couple of beds and you don't want to run drip irrigation to those beds you can consider a product like this as well talk about a major timesaver and like I said I will place a link down in the video description you won't believe how inexpensive these hoses are so there you go folks if you're like me and you're suffering from a prolonged dry spell or you just have hot dry summers in general and you don't want to run drip irrigation everywhere to all of your Landscaping consider these sprinkler hoses they are absolutely incredible and they are incredibly affordable as well now if you do want to run drip irrigation and you want to go big and have a true system running which I recommend you do if you live in places that are always dry like the desert Southwest or if you live in a place with a defined dry season like in Central and South Florida it's probably worth your time to have true drip irrigation installed in that case I will link to my drip irrigation playlist both above down in the video description that will teach you everything you need to know about installing real drip irrigation to your garden beds your container and to your yard so everybody I sure hope you found
