here are a few things you should know about installing decking and I see this plenty of times people they install a deck and they the boards don't layout right or they don't layout as they expected and I just want to point out a few things here that might give you a better place to start or a better way to actually build the deck framing and then install the decking now first thing I would suggest is to always start at the outside and work your way in this way any boards that need to be cut will be in a spot that's not going to be highly visible and I see this a lot actually it's the reason why I made the video was I was looking at a picture I had and it showed the end of the deck with a small 1-inch piece and looked horrible it just looked it didn't look good so I figured I'd make a video to kind of help people out that have maybe never built a deck before even some of the professionals out there who might might be looking for a better way to have all of their deck boards and her in the perfect spot so like I said this is going to be about the best way you can start from the front and work your way back and if this is a 1-inch piece and here you're going to be fine if it's a you know if you have five and a half inch wide decking boards and you have a four inch piece it's not going to be as noticeable and again you can always start from the back and work your way work your way towards the front because I'm going to provide you with a few more things in the video to help you out if you do end up starting at the back and working your way forward you could end up with something like this a small board at the end that and if you want a full-size board at the end all you would need to do is add some material to the front and install a full-size board you could also install a larger board a larger board would work with conventional lumber regular two by six if you're going to use redwood Douglas fir southern pine something like that you could use a larger board and this kind of looks like it's not going to blend in here but wouldn't look too bad if you had a set of stairs coming down here with a large with larger boards for your stair treads or your steps now you could always cut it in half grab a couple of boards and cut them in half to make this work - and something like this you can see isn't really noticeable doesn't really look bad but you might not be able to do everything I'm suggesting with the type of decking you have if you have man-made artificial decking that has grooves on the bottom grooves on the edge it you might not be able to do it you know my numbers might not work for everybody now if you have a smaller section the other section we had was probably about three inches this one here probably about two inches if you have a smaller section like this then you could always add the material again and don't forget you can always leave a little overhang you know you can have a little overhang if you want it again if you added to it and then ripped it down you if you ripped a half inch off a bit or three quarters of an inch that would probably be fine and again you could always put some spacers in here to bring it out even further now you could always rip it down again rip the two boards but you can see here that they're getting a little smaller you know it's going to be more noticeable with the smaller the distances here so if if you have if you're if you need a four inch board to make it work and you're using five and a half inches then it's going to be less noticeable because the boards are going to be larger if you have something that's 1/2 inch or 3/4 of an inch then you're going to be ripping more out of the decking boards again your you have a few options here you don't need to just do one of them but I think you have enough to make it work now here's the last and final method and I mean if you need to have a deck that is a specific size 12 foot wide by 12 foot which is what this one is then this method isn't going to work but I think it would work for most people who build a deck and you just build it in your back yard you frame the deck you don't nail the rim joists on and you start from the up against the building and you work your way this way and then you simply when you get closer you make the necessary adjustments now I added a board here this board wasn't here before in the previous video and you can see here that we need to move it back so if we set the rim joist on top and line it up we can see where we can cut everything and make it work out so remember this board wasn't in the first picture two pictures back like I put this on there but this is what an easy way to get get it to where you can mark everything and make it work out so then after you have everything you figure it out where the board is going to be in this final position by using your decking materials and your rim joists you can cut all of the framing back and of course install the rim joist and then the decking and you are done and I believe this is probably one of the best methods you could use as long as you aren't working with a specific measurement or up against something that is pre-existing or that needs to be built so anyway that's it if you liked the video don't forget to hit the old thumbs up button and it is off to the next video you
