President Barack Obama is throwing his political weight behind Democrats in key swing States today Obama will join Senator Rafael Warnock and gubernatorial nominee Stacy Abrams in Atlanta at an event aimed at rallying black voters to the polls meanwhile in Pennsylvania the former president is starring in a new campaign ad focused on quote the fate of our democracy and a woman's right to choose let's take a look in Pennsylvania you've got some important choices to make this year so when the fate of our democracy and a woman's right to choose are on the line vote Democrat on November 8th all right uh Gene Robinson um how much of an impact do you think Barack Obama can have in some of these Battleground states where you know when you talk to some voters that are not not voting for Democrats the fix is in for them they have made a decision they don't seem to care about the facts right he's look he I don't think he's going to persuade a lot of uh died in the world Republicans or people who've made up their mind to vote Republican to switch um what he what he's going to try to do is drive Democratic turnout and get Democratic voters who don't usually vote in midterms and there are a lot of them uh to vote in this one uh and in in particular in in the places he's going uh he's going to you know he's talking to people in Pennsylvania Democrats but he's going to go to Milwaukee he's going to go to Michigan he's going to go he's going to go to some places where he can drive African-American turnout in particular or hopes to do that because that can make a huge difference you know the early early voting numbers in Atlanta suggests and and Georgia suggests that African Americans are coming out um early to vote in large numbers and that sort of thing is very helpful for Democratic candidates so that's what Obama's going to try to do and he is uh you know the most popular um uh arguably most popular person in in the party I'd say not arguably I think he is former Trump Attorney John Eastman has filed a motion asking a federal judge to reconsider or stay in order requiring him to hand over multiple documents to the January 6th house select committee pending Eastman's appeal Judge David Carter recently ordered Eastman to give the committee emails that allegedly show efforts to disrupt congress's confirmation of President Biden's 2020 election win the certification there judge Carter wrote that the documents are either not protected by attorney-client privilege or exempt from that privilege because they were related to a crime or attempted crime specifically the judge noted Eastman had flagged to Trump's attorneys their supposed evidence of voter fraud in Fulton County Georgia was inaccurate but Trump and his legal team went on to file a complaint in federal court nevertheless quote with the same inaccurate numbers without rectifying clarifying or otherwise changing them Politico also has new reporting about Eastman laying out a new plot to undermine elections in new audio from a speech he gave last week Eastman appears to be pushing for ways to set up a flood of lawsuits in state courts and challenging the midterm results already joining us now National investigative correspondent at Politico Heidi pris Bella Heidi it's great to see you boy this is an amazing bit of audio that you've Unearthed of John Eastman basically coaching people about how to keep a paper trail so that they can file lawsuits about these midterm elections let's listen to a little bit of what you found they have to be registered but they can register the same day at a time but but the requirements for identification to do same-day registration is a little bit different that ID must have an address in the county and it must have a photo in other words you can't do the same data registration just with your utility bill or something so same-day registration just is allowed but it's still not part of the ordinary rules right and so there's a little so this is 1-4-5.7 again get that book out and have a circle to know what these things are there these are rounds for challenging somebody if they come in and their IDs as they live down in Las Cruces and they're trying to vote in Albuquerque so will your ID is not valid you don't get to do that you don't get to register here today with an out of County ID and they'll just kind of have some sense of what you're allowed to do so you know I got a new year three three people are look at their registrations and if they're all in the same party you know get in touch with the county chairman see I'd like to be the the the number two judge I'm having so that they can meet their their statutory group bipartisan requirement and and get it and get a gold because then you're the ones making the decisions not just raising the questions about the decision here's the consequence to you with your normal body deceiver you really want to walk down that path right do it politely right do it gingerly and if they say we're calling the police on you because you're obstructing no I'm doing but the statute off advises need to do let's go ahead and call the police and we'll see if they'll enforest podcast who got 26 against you all right click the like you put a smile on your face okay so Heidi let's take a step back and and tell our viewers who exactly John Eastman is talking to there what he's asking them to do and you're struck by the what brazenness or lack of Shame however you look at it of a guy who's under investigation who drafted a document coaching people how to overturn the last election in 2020 now getting ahead and doing it again yeah Willy as you know John Eastman is the architect of Trump's failed attempt to overturn the last election and we've done a lot of reporting on this Army of poll workers and poll Watchers that Republicans are trying to recruit to go to polling locations and the big concern has been that they're going to just disrupt voting that they're going to intimidate voters but what you have here from John Eastman who was the architect is that the real goal here is for them to basically be the vehicle for creating the documentation that would be necessary to challenge upcoming elections he speaks very explicitly and repeatedly urges them to build the case build the documents write everything down and that those documents then can become affidavits that could be used in future cases Willie so the big concern here is that this Army that is being built up it may become disruptive because a lot of these people are coming in they're believing that they are there to police fraud they believed that they're going to be seeing fraud so they could create disruptions but the new revelation here is that that's not the main goal of the people who are pulling the strings like John Eastman like cleta Mitchell who's been organizing these Summits all around the country Willie that the goal is really that these people will be the vehicle to create those legal disputes and one other thing I wanted to mention now this was a New Mexico Summit that's where John Eastman is now a resident and it's also important to note that if you recall there was a board during the primaries in New Mexico Otero County which refused to certify the election down there nobody understood what was happening but Willie what I was told was there were resolutions like that circulating all over the state it was just Otero County that said okay we'll do it we'll try this we'll see what happens when we refuse to certify an election the concern is that these people are going to create the documentation that could be used by a legislature or by a County Board to say we're not going to certify Jonathan Lemire as Heidi says John Eastman is a central figure in the attempted coup around the last election in a central figure in your book the big lie you wrote a lot about him and now to hear him on tape again given everything we know about him all the judges that have asked for his documents and all the trouble he could be in to be right back in that position saying here's guys how we can gum up the system again and drag these things out if in fact we lose elections yeah Unapologetic and Shameless that's what John Eastman's behavior is here and you're right he is a central character to the big lie to everything Donald Trump and his allies tried to do after the 2020 election remember it was his idea to set the fake elector schemes and all states put alternate electors to the Congress that would allow Mike Pence to try to throw that out and therefore keep Trump in office we know that Easton was the one sending emails around afterwards we're like guys we might have broken the law and then potentially wondering if he might need a pardon so he is someone who uh well let's just say in the thick of things so Heidi this is a terrific reporting and obviously suggests that this reiterates how the big lie is still going to be with us and that talk to us a little bit about what you're seeing we speak more broadly about not just Eastman's actions here but how this is part of what the Republican ethos is now we're seeing up and down the ballot campaigns already threatening to challenge election results if they don't like them and that is why you could see this potentially even in Republican states like I said Otero County there was no reason for that election to be challenged and for the board Commissioners there to refuse to certify the concerns according to election officials who I talked to there Jonathan were that it really was a test run to see okay well what would happen if we did refuse to certify an election that is of course the biggest fear of a lot of Elections officials that I talk to is that you see this all kind of happening in coordination at the same time that now there's one piece here you have individuals who could create this documentation you have in the courts now the Supreme Court potentially now hearing this case on the What's called the independent state legislature Theory which would allow state legislatures to have the final say and essentially determining the outcome of an election and potentially overruling uh our courts or bigfooting courts bigfooting State officials who are supposed to have that fine will say and you see how the pieces are potentially being put in place here for a much more successful version of what was considered in 2020 to be a really ham-handed approach where they had a lot of these untrained pull Challengers banging literally on the outside of these polling locations where votes were being counted now the goal is really to put these people in a position to have real power they're asking them to serve as not only official party poll Challengers but also as workers workers judges people who are supposed to be the nonpartisan officials and if you hear Eastman on these tapes he's really explicit about basically using very narrow interpretations of the law very technical interpretations like people are supposed to speak audibly when they State their name and address when they come to vote and if they don't you should challenge that well while that's technically true if I'm sitting here and I'm challenging every single person who's coming in there maybe I'm in a minority District even and I'm a white person challenging these people speak up speak up one after the other well is that really enforcing the law or is that voter intimidation so you have the concern about intimidation the people the reporting there about people showing up potentially armed at polling locations in Michigan but again the takeaway here guys is that this broader strategy is about laying a legal framework and precedent to empower people even with meritless claims to potentially challenge elections um for the first time ever outgoing Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney has publicly endorsed a democratic house candidate Cheney endorsed two-term Michigan congresswoman Alyssa slotkin this week with the campaign announcing the two congresswomen will host a joint rally next Tuesday in Lansing Cheney who was once the number three ranking Republican in the house had never before publicly endorsed a democrat in a statement released by The slotkin Campaign Cheney wrote while Alyssa and I have our policy disagreements at a time when our nation is facing threats at home and abroad we need serious responsible substantive members like Alyssa in Congress in response slotkin's opponent Republican state senator Tom Barrett released a statement that read in part now establishment warhawks like Liz Cheney and Alyssa slotkin are standing together because I oppose their senseless thirst for for more foreign entanglements both real clear politics and the cook political report list the battle to represent Michigan's Seventh District as a toss-up will watch that race but let's pull back to 20 000 feet this is why we have John Meacham here um this race and this endorsement Meacham represents the the battle for the soul of America what's at stake here what do you make of Liz Cheney's choice to back up Alyssa slotkin and do you think it will have an impact in the long run well Liz Cheney's putting country above party she is not just talking about it she's not just away from as Jen said away from the hot mic she's not just saying oh we really need to do something about this extremism and Trump she has put her political career really not in jeopardy but she has ended her uh for now her hold on elective office for a principal and that's what we are supposed to want in principled leaders in a democracy it's public virtue in action and she's really the Margaret Chase Smith of our time Margaret J Smith was a senator from Maine who four years before the men caught up with her uh denounced Joe McCarthy and did so as I'm saying that principle mattered more than party and principle and this is the hard part in a midterm election 11 days out but the Cheney news and her statement there actually manifests this point this really is a midterm I believe personal opinion take it or leave it obviously that the principles of Politics as a mediation of differences and obeying the rule of law that is more important in this hour I believe than any particular policy disagreement or debate I just do I wish we could sit around and argue about marginal tax rates or you know colas and Social Security that would be lovely right and but we can't because there's there's so many people who simply want to grab Power by any means necessary in order to Advance their own interests and put the con the entire constitutional experiment toward a more perfect union in jeopardy and I just think that's where we are I don't mean to sound hyperbolic but this is not hypothetical this is what they say they want to do and at a certain point you have to take people seriously and so I think what I think what Liz Cheney's done is is remarkable I wish more people would do it and I think that not just history but people of Goodwill around the country should honor her for it and listen to her and vote for representative slotkin and I say that by the way not is it I'm not a Democrat I I voted for republicans and Democrats and uh you know I live in Tennessee when I say I have conservative friends that's redundant you know I this is not this is this is not a crazy uh partisan thing to say uh it is I think a genuine stress test for citizenship for all of us John Vaughn you have the latest on the first ad buy for Cheney's new pack right and this is the first media by by the new pack that Liz Cheney formed after her primary loss in Wyoming to Harriet Hageman this is really the next ACT for Liz Cheney not only campaigning for slotkin up in that competitive house district up in Michigan but now here in Arizona beginning today a new 30-second ad is hitting the airwaves in which she is targeting the Republican candidacies of Kerry Lake and Mark fincham take a listen I don't know that I have ever voted for a Democrat but if I lived in Arizona I absolutely would you have a candidate for governor Kerry Lake you have a candidate for Secretary of State Mark fincham both of whom have said that they will only honor the results of an election if they agree with it and if you care about the survival of our Republic we cannot give people power who will not honor elections we must have elected officials in who honor that responsibility Liz Cheney was here in the state just earlier this month in which she was addressing a crowd of the McCain Institute here down the road in Tempe but this is her next act really putting uh the money where the mouth is here in terms of trying to boost the Democratic candidacies of the candidates for Governor and Secretary of State against those election denying Republicans who are backed by Donald Trump Jen soccer you spent time last week in Braddock in Western Pennsylvania where you spent the day walking block to block with a group of women canvassing for Planned Parenthood in this clip you ask a canvasser about the issues she's hearing are important to voters and after that we're going to see an exchange with the Pennsylvania mother of four women are really engaged women are fired up a lot of a lot of women you know when we would ask them the question of what is the primary issue for them they would just say oh where do I start they talk about it as abortion rights like what else what do they bring up as other issues that are of concern to them um I don't know if I think it's as much abortion rights as as it is that they feel that their freedoms are being taken away you know it's almost as if you think of um what's next you know well what happens next and the economy is definitely something that people are talking about but when it comes to women that are a little older we've seen inflation before we know that it will come down but this is something that's different this something that feels more immediate and and permanent Maybe hi Amanda my name is Robin I'm with Planned Parenthood votes and I just want to make sure that you're aware of the candidates that are running in this election I am you are okay uh Josh Shapiro he's running for governor well the one thing about Shapiro that's really going to be important and I know you have children is that he is going to protect the rights of women that's going to be very important so he's going to protect Health Care he's also going to protect our abortion rights which are important as well because as you know the Supreme Court just struck down Roe v Wade and they've turned it back to the state so yeah we are we State that's pretty ridiculous so what's most important to you as you're thinking about who to vote for what do you care about um yeah the mother of four children um the jobs they say that all these jobs are out there but they don't want to pay enough for you to actually live off of the job so you know I'd like there to be you know more jobs available with the flexibility you know to be able to actually work and take care of your family and not have to worry about choosing one because I'm in that situation now you know I need to go back to work but I can't afford to pay for child care and you know Child Care is that something you know with four kids it's not something that's really keeping you up at night yeah absolutely I can't afford it you know I mean we're probably living off of maybe 400 a week you know um which is more than some people make but isn't enough for four kids you know and to pay your lights gas you know well thank you being a mama four is not easy that's not the answer you wanted but you know thank you and tell the kids we said thanks so Robin we just met Amanda at her door mother of four uh tell us a little about that conversation Amanda is Not Unusual I see her everywhere I go mothers who have to stay at home because they can't afford child care this young lady has two kids in school and two kids at home so you can imagine what what her life is like juggling for kids and having to feed four kids on 400 a week I mean it's got to be tough it really and my heart goes out to her wow uh Jen sake these are great conversations and I wonder what you think the takeaway from that conversation which as as the canvasser said you know happens many times over what the takeaway is for the Democratic Party yeah I mean Mika I spent six hours following these canvases around and there were a lot of conversations exactly like the one Robin just had with Amanda Rivera because there's a lot going on in people's lives uh whether it's concerns about child care concerns about the economy yes Amanda and many people we spoke with did care about abortion rights uh did care about having those rights taken away as Dominica the earlier canvasser said oftentimes they talk about that as uh either rights at risk you know it's not the same conversations we're having in Washington but my biggest takeaway is something Robin young also told me which is that we really need to meet people where they are these were voters we were they were talking to all day and this is what the program is around the state of Pennsylvania and in 10 other states across the country is to go see voters who are unlikely voters maybe they don't vote frequently maybe they need more information and what these canvassers are doing they're from the community and they're going and saying do you know know who Josh Shapiro is do you know who John fetterman is well what do you think about whether or not you should be able to make decisions about your own health care okay that's great here's some more information about that well what do you think about a a supporting somebody who wants to make sure that you know you have access to your own health care and you have uh you're able to put your kids through child care we we sometimes over complicate the language and the conversations we're having and what my biggest takeaway from that day is we really need to simplify it speak in a way that people are having conversations on their straights and there's nothing like spending a day with people actually in a community to be a huge reminder of that Minka so we'll have to ask Robin young if she'll come brief the Democratic for how to caucus maybe she will who knows you know we sit around absolutely we talk about theories and and what and then you see a woman who's raising four kids on on 400 yeah and you go Nothing Else Matters to her there's no there's no argument other than uh you other than guess what we're going to figure out a way to make bread more affordable to you I mean there's just what you know when it's about survival when it's about these issues that just they can't live now you can scare them and say it could get worse they could take your health care away I mean that's a strategy to go but you know if she is representative of a big part of the populace and she is and now let's even factor in people who've seen their IRAs not a woman like that necessarily but who's in their IRAs go down by 20 25 percent it's really tough and I've come on the show and talked a lot about that you've got to scare people and make it about the Republicans that are crazy people but even with the pending crazy when you can't afford to buy the stuff that you're able to buy a year or two or three years ago it's tough tough sledding I hate hate to be negative many over here I don't even know what the hell that means but uh I am really I am really scared about a bloodbath 10 days from now so our next guest says young conservatives have leapfrogged ahead of Democrats when it comes to messaging and the Republican National Committee is spending Millions to make it happen award-winning journalist Kyle Spencer joins us now her new book is entitled raising them right the untold story of America's Ultra conservative youth movement and its plot for power uh well congratulations on the book tell us about this uh this youth youth movement and how the far right is really starting them young yeah so uh the conservative movement has been working on building up young people and attracting them and creating kind of surrogate celebrities for many many years and we're really starting to see them reaping the benefits of this today you have people all over the place and a lot of times on Twitter and these other social media Outlets who are really sending the message that young people ought to trust conservatives over liberals and that they ought to really move to the conservative side the other thing that you see a ton of these folks doing is really trying to push this idea that Democrats are out of touch not taking care of you out of control and that the changes that are happening in this country which are very scary to a lot of people are really the fault of Democrats who aren't taking care of business and so what are the issues um that they're using to sort of bring them in young and also who are these far-right celebrities that that are attracting them yeah so you have far right celebrities like Charlie Kirk or Candace Owens who I write about in my book um but you also have folk you know they're constantly making new celebrities so you know you see someone like Kyle Rittenhouse who killed a couple of people at a rally who's now a celebrity who's beloved on the on the right I mean this is the kind of thing that they're able to do it's really a celebrity making machine and young people love Kyle and they love Charlie and they love Candace um and so the issues that they try to focus on are really culture War issues these guys want to stay away from what is what are the Democrats really doing they don't want to talk about build builds back better they don't want to talk about Dobbs they don't want to talk about the environment they want to stay on these Lefty kids on your campus are dangerous they're lazy uh Biden is falling off his bicycle all the time the Democrats are too old look at these homeless people everything's chaotic and out of control trans gender folks want to take over you know culture War issues to stay away from actual issues which might get people really thinking about what Dems are doing for them Kyle you spent a lot of time reporting this out four years you embedded with a lot of these groups who really understand it so where are they looking for these young kids and let's say who is they who are the people who are doing all of this training for a long time there's an organization called the leadership it was started in the late 1960s early 1970s the Leadership Institute is basically creating foot soldiers for the right it is housed in a building outside of DC the Leadership Institute raises 25 million dollars a year to teach kids how to activate how to door knock granular stuff what you should put in your pamphlet what should you put on your sign what color should you use on your sign how when you go down door not should you walk on someone's lawn don't you know how should you convert people so this is the type of stuff that kids are learning as you can imagine the the we're living in a very weird world now where the conservatives are the one who seem to be very in touch with how people communicate and what is going on with uh you know politically and so what do the conservatives do immediately when they started seeing stuff happening on school boards they started teaching kids you know what we're going to teach kids how to run for School Board office and talk about all this CTR stuff so um you know it is and it is invasive and it is big and it is very organized Kyle is this a is this at all a regional thing are there parts of the country um where young people um that where they're finding young young people more receptive uh to these ideas and this pitch um uh is it a you know rural suburban how do you how would you describe the places where uh where the phenomenon is happening really this phenomenon was really um focusing on college campuses right and the idea was we're going to get these college kids but what we've seen in the last 10 or 15 years the way people use social media is that a lot of these activists realized these young activists that they didn't have to just focus on college campuses that that didn't really scale right that what really scaled was to go online and to talk to people on social media and then you could get millions and millions and millions of people and these right-wing activists like Charlie Kirk at Turning Point USA and like uh Young Americans for Liberty which is another group I follow these guys are online and they are working on messaging on a daily basis to figure out what is the most coherent message to get kids attracted to them and so they can get them in all Corners right they can get them in all Corners what I argue with my book is that when you see groups like The Proud boys or The Oath Keepers and a lot of people find them to be the most alarming right-wing groups but those are very radical groups that are going after Fringe kids these groups are going after mainstream kids your kids my kids on college campuses and Beyond the book is titled raising them right the untold story of America's ultra-conservative youth movement and its plot for power very compelling Kyle Spencer thank you very much for coming on the show this morning [Music] foreign
