hey everybody how you doing today and welcome to the simhanger my name's Mark and welcome also to another Microsoft flight simulator video and today we're looking at a freeware utility Auto FPS it's a very clever piece of freeware developed by a member of our community reset xpdr and if you're an advocate of set and forget or having trouble getting those settings just right and you're tired of stutters as you approach the airports then this may well be for you and what's more it works equally well on monitor or in VR and we're going to jump right in after this message from this video sponsor unifor Montgomery clearance clear to the pal airport after departure flatting when you're looking to take the next step towards total immersion and looking for tactile feedback be it part of a cockpit build or Standalone flightsim Builder have a navigational unit for you their navigational units are replicas of the real product competitively priced and built for use with Microsoft flight simulator and xplane I can personally attest to their quality and why because I use them myself looking for more information check out my review video and flighton builder direct link in the notes below we're in a rather rainy and overcast whales at the moment before we jump into the app let's have a quick look at our graphic settings for those of you not up to speed this will help your understanding of what exactly this app does and why it will help your FPS from what I can see auto FPS adds a little bit of Xbox magic to the PC what do I mean by that well anybody who's used Microsoft flight simulator on the Xbox series X for example will notice one difference that is there's no graphic settings available for the Xbox make no mistake many of the graphic parameters are there in the background but they're optimized and change dynamically depending on the load on the system to give you best performance and auto FPS seeks to do very much the same thing by addressing some of the Heavy Hitters in our graphic settings now I have a fairly beefy system so ignore my actual settings they're not really relevant but let's turn our attention first to one of the big hitters terrain level of detail an easier way to understand what this does is think of it as draw distance imagine your aircraft is in the center with a circle drawn around around you if you've got your setting say on 50 then you've got a very small circle and the details within that Circle be fully rendered at The Other Extreme if you have terrain level of detail at 400 well the circle in which all the detail needs to be drawn is considerably larger in fact it's huge this takes more computing power more calculations and longer time to compute that PA or stutter that you experience is whilst you wait for the computer to catch up so it can draw in the respective detail hang on a minute you may say I've got a 4090 graphics card well the reality of the situation is that Microsoft flight simulator is single core threaded predominantly and only certain tasks are passed off to the GPU the CPU still has much calculating to do before it can be drawn and what exactly are the images that need to be rendered in terrain level of detail well it's think things like trees grass your elevation and so on the same sort of parameters apply to your object's level of detail and items such as volumetric clouds is also a big one a massive number of triangulation calculations required to draw those clouds that's beyond the scope of this video to run into all those details if you'd like a little bit more of an insight as to what happens and what's going on then check out this video here Link in the notes below so what Auto FPS will do is dynamically change the terrain level of detail settings in conjunction with your volumetric clouds and following a recent update your object level of detail as well if desired so when you're flying low over a builtup area and coming into an airport it will lower those settings and make for a smoother experience by trying to maintain a targeted FPS which you set within the program let's now jump back to sim and have a look at the app but before we do so I'd just like to say that I would hope that Microsoft flight simulator 2024 not only will it be multicore but hopefully there'll be options for tuning or optimization in terms of automatic and dynamic adjustment one can only hope details on where you can get your hands on this app a little later on in the video it's a straightforward download run the installer and it's there let's take a closer look one of the big appeals and strengths of this application is its pure Simplicity to get it to run you will need a mobiflight profile this is also freeware and available via a link from the developer and in simple terms this is how it works you set a Target frames per second or FPS that you would like to achieve and as it will dynamically adjust your terrain level of detail you set the minimum and the altitude at which it needs to be at minimum in this example it's 1,000 ft that's the sort of altitude you'll be at when you're on Final and approaching your airport or something like that you can also set the maximum terrain level of detail required I would recommend nothing more than 200 and you also have the option to set an average descent rate this will simply determine otherwise how quickly it will will move down to the minimum terrain level of detail as you descend the settings that you see here are the default settings you'll also notice there's a setting here for clouds where you can decrease the cloud quality from whatever your current setting is down one level I currently have my clouds on Ultra so it will move them down to high if needed to help achieve the FPS but the cloud recovery terrain level of detail is 100 what that means is clouds will go back to ultra when terrain level of detail equals 100 or more so in summary you set your terrain level of detail minimum and maximums and you set a Target FPS rate and the application will change the terrain level of detail settings in a bid to reach that if it's struggling to reach that will it reduce the cloud level as well just to note if you're using frame generation make sure pause when Microsoft flight simulator loses focus is not ticked and you're best to put this app on another monitor the other settings I believe are fairly straightforward and you can keep tabs on exactly what's happening by keeping your eye on these values here they'll be your live settings I'm using version 0.4.1 and this is now also added in the option for the object level of detail to allow you to adjust that as well I'm not going to do that in this video and I recommend that you do one and not the other initially to ascertain what gives your system the best performance okay so I'm lined up on the runway in the A320 and even though I'm getting an FPS of 87 at the moment note my terrain level of detail is down at 50 that's the minimum I set and I want my terrain level of detail down at 50 when I'm at 1,000 ft or on the ground you can set what parameters as you wanted terrain level of detail could have been 50 could have been 75 could have been 100 depends on your system we're now heading down the runway and we're going to take off and rotate let's keep our eye on the terrain level of detail which is currently 50 and our altitude above ground level which is also handily shown in the app coming up on 200 ft and we're continuing to climb out now for 400 ft and it's remaining at 50 as it should remember I set the minimum as 1,000 you could have set it for whatever you wanted we're now coming up on a th000 and if you look at the terrain level of detail it's now moving up 58 64 69 72 and so on and it's increasing because my target FPS is 40 and it sees that I've got lots of Headroom because I'm currently getting 7 8 FPS if you didn't have the enough headro or set your FPS too high it may have kept your terrain level of detail at 50 we're now climbing away from Cardiff and all the scenery surrounding it so the load on the system is less it's kept my clouds at Ultra which is fine so let's just add a little bit more load to the system I'm going to change the 40 frames per second to 60 cuz we're pretty much at that anyway terrain level of detail is continuing to increase 140 150 160 and so on if it wasn't increasing well then lower the targeted FPS I'm sure you're getting the just by now we're continuing to climb away and you can see it's restored now my terrain level of detail to 200 which is the maximum I set and overw waterer for Less load on the system don't forget to experiment with different weather settings more or less Cloud will change the load on your system here for example I'm really trying to tax my system I've raised the FPS Target to 100 and it's achieved it but it's had to drop the terrain level of detail right down to minimum 50 and has dropped the clouds from Ultra to high in order to achieve the desired FPS when you do change parameters give it a little while to settle down it can times take a minute or two in order to adjust the various parameters so it's a case of set it watch it and then adjust it once it's had time to settle down we're now heading into Bristol airport it's from Pilot plus and its beautifully detailed search should be a good test altitude is currently 1,7 ft terrain level of detail has dropped to 150 but clouds are still on Ultra remember I've got a setting at 1,000 ft above ground level my terrain level of detail should reduce to 50 to help prevent stutters and pauses and so on let's see how we do 1,000 oh by the way please excuse the Livery I know this A320 from New Zealand's A Long Way from Home 200 100 60 50 40 30 20 five to get your hands on it I'll leave a link to the developers GitHub page in the notes below note this is currently in development and being updated on a very regular basis and once again my thanks to reset xpdr what a marvelous Innovation this is note when installing you're likely to get some anti virus warnings Etc as this has been developed by a private individual and the product's not signed and of course you install at your own risk download the installer it will ask for the mobiflight profile it'll provide a link to that as well one of the nice features about this application is that when you exit it it will restore your settings to exactly as they were so right now the app is running and you can see that my terrain level of detail is at 50 as I'm on the ground and that's the minimum that I set let me now close the application I'll exit there we are go back and return to my general options graphic settings and there we can see terrain level of detail it's back to 200 perfect so in closing who is this for and who's likely to benefit the most while for those on Lower to medium end systems you're likely to get the most benefit from this application now I have a 14900 k and a 1490 GPU but even even I found it very useful and especially so when I'm in something like the PX VR headset and pushing that render resolution all the way up but even if you are on a high-end system it is great for testing and triing purely to ascertain what sort of settings suit you best for a set and forget if I'm not in VR I'm not likely to have this application running but I'll use it for testing but if I had a lower end system well I certainly would please note as this application directly addresses the memory allocations within Microsoft flight simulator it's not approved or condoned by Microsoft well I hope you found it useful and informative thank you as always for joining me don't forget to leave a thumbs up if you enjoyed the video stay well look after yourselves and CIA for now
