Visiting Ohio's Amish Country | A week in the life of a Mennonite Family

headed back to used to be home pass some battles little town so no so well stop for gas and then drive hey y'all welcome back I am a period Holmes County Ohio we are up here for several days we were in southern Ohio at my sister-in-law's wedding look at you she's all ready for the wedding [Music] it skating just the funniest a little bit I thought I would just kind of bring you guys along show you guys some of the more touristy areas also I'm going to show you guys around here at my grandparents place and then I'll do some shopping and take you all along as we go to different places so if you're not familiar Holmes County is a large and Amish community one of the largest I think and this is where I was born and then moved to southern Ohio until I was well let's see well how old was I 29 and then we moved to Florida so we are just up here on basically summer vacation because of the wedding and everything we're spending some extended time up here so it's good to be back the weather is gorgeous first of all I'm gonna take you guys on a little tour my grandparents sit on a hill as you can see for miles pretty much if you're familiar with hope you got a there's a lot of farms and houses dotting the landscape and this is a prime example of it but if you ever come to Holmes County I hope you enjoy it and there's so much to do okay so I'm gonna do a voiceover style because when I was filming it it was very windy so this is the house that my aunt and uncle live in but this is the house that grandpa's my grandparents had pretty much you know most of their married life where mom would have grown up so then grandpa's built their house up here on this hill they've had it for I'm guessing I don't know 20 years or so so this is the back side of the house they have a pretty large garage and mom and dad are actually living up here during the week right now just to help out and then dad and my brother are working up here and then most weekends they'll go down to southern Ohio then you know for the weekend and stuff so eventually they are planning to move up here they just haven't quite figured out all the details I wanted to show you some of grandma's pretty flowers she's got all kinds of them a lot of petunias marigold whatnot so she loves doing these and her rose bushes are doing very well this year [Music] so here's the view from the front [Music] rocking chairs here garden back here that she fenced in because something was eating her green beans I think they actually thought some deer were actually eating it so over here you can see very far and if you're at all familiar with this area they are in the Sugar Creek area Tuscarawas County so technically not Holmes County if I'm right but actually down here around the corner you can't see it but we used to live in a cabin down the hill there when I was a little girl here's a barn grandpa's used to have a horse I'm not sure if they have one anymore they might and today is Monday my sister is actually engaged to be married in October and so she is gonna take advantage of perusing some fabric stores up here so mom and the girls are in there already so we're in Sugarcreek here first I'm going to go into Carlisle fabrics and they're gonna be checking out some stuff for the wedding so this is the little town of Sugar Creek they call it Little Switzerland of Ohio can hear the yodeling [Music] [Music] this is the entrance to Carlo fabrics here check it out all the wedding stuff yeah it's your first experience in a fabric store huh here's some hats [Music] I think it's a real person Wow hey cash one should just eat the hair right now how much are they Rosalina thirty three fifty [Music] [Music] [Music] so we're now at Mount Hope fabrics and gift shop in Mount Hope that's actually a relative of ours I think mom right they own it yeah so if you're in Mount Hope area there's another fabric store [Music] okay so we're getting ready to eat at East Maine kitchen in Baltic Keio I have not eaten here Nick has but I hear the food is phenomenal highly recommend we're gonna eat with part of the family at least [Music] I [Music] right [Music] in this plate nation and Oh [Music] we yes someone define a restaurant experiences he should not karate service was phenomenal it was awesome oh my goodness and I got rhubarb to go phenomenal [Music] [Music] [Music] this is from upstairs where you get your food to eat like the restaurant you can see down into the rest of it the Knicks got a mix no a stack is that what it's called basically the Chipotle yeah but you could do like mashed potatoes as you're pro or like your carbs instead of rice which I did the rice but yeah I taste a piece of chicken it was unbelievable and I got my trusty trail one Swiss that's usually what I get here along with a peanut butter cup mixer Nick as a fry pie strawberry mixer it's like they're frozen custard with toppings in it so okay so I grabbed some of these kitchen dish rags here I always like this kind and it's not the kind you can buy like just anywhere I feel like it's an Amish I'm gonna night type of thing so I grab two of those to take a long haul with me so I'm trying to figure out what else I could recommend to you guys because there's so much to do and see it up here and it kind of depends what you like to do if you're coming in the fall definitely go to Hillcrest orchard you know what road it's on most of the their Dutchman yeah in water Concord be close to there definitely go there they have amazing apple cider I mean there's always the you know Amish type restaurants there's Boyd and Worthman in Berlin that would be a really good place for breakfast it's just like a little a little hole in the wall almost but it's been there for years and they have really good food and that's right in the center of Berlin pretty much there's plenty of shopping to do there there's a cheese houses around here and I'll be honest I've actually never been in one there's Heinie's cheese Chalet I think that's on County Road 77 there is multiple you know both food stores there's lots of different like Amish stores I think there's a picking there's one on County Road 77 there's a room flawed but I think that one's called 77 housewares I think that's the name of it so if you're looking for you know that type of thing just you know very cultural there's plenty of those around if you want a lot of history on Anabaptists and things like that there is a place called be hot I don't know if I was ever there honestly but that would be yeah it's very informative so that would be a good a good thing if you know you're trying to learn more about you know our culture and things like that Berlin has a big antique mall in like a huge bar and it's right in the corner there as you get into Berlin coming from Walnut Creek I've been there and it's very interesting you feel like antiques and stuff they have like two levels of it a huge barn and right next door is village gift barn I always like going in there I don't know if I'm gonna make it in there this time or not there's also dur Bake Oven which is across the street there and they would have what pastries and used to go there all the time as a kid yeah so you know lots to do in Z okay we're at another place here in Berlin it is Kaufman's country accents I don't know if you've ever heard of that but it's right like in the hub of everything so definitely make a stop here they have lots of maybe more farmhouse country style stuff so not necessarily just like modern things like I grabbed it tight towards but they have so many like beautiful like floral things so I'll show you around a little bit so it's in an old house they have so many greens so there's just a little glimpse of some things they have here they actually have an online website so I'll have that linked in my description box if you want to go check them out I think that she said it's pretty new if you're looking for something you know you wanted to do some online shopping it's up there they would have he's available there so I'll have that linked in my description box [Music] there's the beauty shop a little shop that Nick always came to to eat the pizza shop we're at Mount Hope sale barn or auction barns they have I guess what livestock today also some flea market stuff you're looking to spend your money earned huh yeah we're trying to spend some money [Music] so right here is where my dad grew up my uncle and aunt will still lived there [Music] we're here in southern Ohio now at Nick's parents place again we left our trailer here and we're getting ready to head out early in the morning to go back home to Florida but I thought it would show you guys around and show you my mother-in-law's beautiful flowers she loves working outdoors so she's got these big planters out here in the front there you are hey I'm gonna run the drone yes try get some footage all right anyway this thing is huge and the pink ones always do so well their bubblegum petunias a lot of these I think she said she started on her own like she would have just gotten like one little plant and I think she adds a lot of Miracle Gro to him and they always just look phenomenal Wow I did not see that this thing is in bloom these are so pretty it's like a okay it's showing a lot more pink on camera they're actually more like a rose a rose pink Kayden's out there fishing he loves fishing he's actually pretty good at it she said she just planted some hydrangeas here somewhere I think I saw some up at the front maybe two but she just found some on clearance at Lowe's here recently some more pretty ones this back area is so gorgeous what do you think Oakland so nice isn't it she's also got a lot of perennials here so [Music] a little potting shed here so adorable just look at that and these pretty sure these are daisies guessing they're just not in bloom yet so that is the majority of them they're just beautiful
