sometimes it's hard to distinguish between fear and intuition [Music] case when it came to our trip to Marseille [Music] reading things like highest crime rate in France dirty trashy seedy and if you don't speak French just skip it all together left us questioning if we jumped into this trip too fast especially since our French isn't the best [Music] but today we are going to explore and give you our first impressions yeah I feel more uncomfortable so we've been living in Sevilla for a few months now and we are coming over to Marseille on a cheap ticket 60 round trip so anywho we don't speak any french this is so embarrassing and number two we didn't realize until we booked the tickets that there's a lot of Marseille has a pretty rough stereotype for crime and safety it's okay though because we don't speak French and we're going to be carrying around a camera so we'll let you know how it goes already we took the bus to the main station the city I don't know I don't know how to pronounce it but the surrounding area is beautiful so we're all ready I have a really good first impressions right now but I need a coffee I looked up how to say two coffees in French very easy let's hear it do Cafe oh shut up oh but before we go we need to and it's super important through our right here oh my gosh [Music] look at this beautiful and Charming apartment we are absolutely absolutely in love with this place so when we stay in airbnbs we always stay in someone's apartment or home because you know budget and this one is just marvelous this is exactly what I would imagine an apartment in France to be like we gotta live somewhere like this one day fine [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] Marseille is a city where tourists aren't the focused and people live full of self-expression being a diverse City culturally and artistically you can never really tell who is local and who is not each person expresses their unique individuality no matter how unusual Which shapes the spirit of Marseille [Music] so today we've just walked around and explored Marseille at a nice slow pace and seeing what there is to see and Marseille is really interesting because it is not only the second largest city in all of France but it's actually the oldest so with over 2 000 years of History you would think that this is a super popular tourist spot but a lot of people actually choose to skip it due to Marseilles a little bit of a seedy or sketchy reputation and walking around you will see it's a little grungy but we kind of like it and so far we felt safe there was only one time where we kind of walked into an area around a market that felt like maybe we shouldn't be there if there was a lot of men loitering we were being kind of watched and we left and everything other than that has felt very comfortable to be completely honest we don't know the real risks when it comes to safety when you read online there's a lot of warnings about pit pocketing crime not being very safe as a woman but but just like any other City we are taking just normal precautions walking around in the popular areas in the daytime and we got an Airbnb in a good location so so far so good and we are actually really really loving Marseille we really enjoy the graffiti in the contrast to the old buildings it looks very spectacular to us we love all the cafes and the different cultures that are present and all the different foods you can get we are so interested in all the people here in the different Fashions we see and how hustling and bustling the city is so so far we've really enjoyed today I read a quote online that says Marseille isn't pretty like Leon or Paris but because it's not pretty there's a certain type of tourist who loves it and I guess we're those exact people [Music] so good morning we are starting our morning off eating at a little Fringe Cafe across from Longchamp Palace which is so beautiful it looks way bigger in person than in pictures and so far this has been such a magical experience enjoying the morning here just having a slow morning with our chocolate croissant pastries and our coffee and our orange juice [Music] foreign [Music] champ Palace we're here on a Saturday morning and look there's really no one here and we're kind of just free to walk around and enjoy this I feel like when there's places like this for Citizens but there's just not a lot of tourists it just gives like a totally different vibe it's not to the point of like going and seeing the Eiffel Tower or going to the Louvre especially on a Saturday morning when you would expect a lot of people to be in a place like this we've really run into a lot of very very friendly and nice and beautiful people yeah and it's just been a really good experience so far and we're just really enjoying our time here French people have always been very kind to us so I don't know why they have such a bad stereotype for being rude there's there's they've always been so kind this beautiful palace of Longchamp opened in 1869 as a memorial to celebrate the fact that Marseille now has drinking water there was a 30-year engineering project of creating canals and a way for all the water in the Durant's River I don't know if that's correct how you pronounce it so this is the celebration of having water and ending a very difficult time for the people of Marseille [Music] so that is the cathedral the most famous Cathedral of Marseille that we're going to go to later looks far yeah today is going to be the day of exploring yesterday we didn't do as much exploring what we did just in a different way but today we're going to be really exploring diving into a little bit more history and we're really excited for it we now came to the cathedral we were gonna walk 40 minutes uphill but we actually hopped on a bus and there were so many people that the bus driver didn't charge anyone so we gotta pay for free to get up to the cathedral you can either ride the bus which was route 60. you could Uber which is probably expensive or taxi or you can ride these cute little trains but when I looked it up it said it was about nine dollars a person per ride which is a little out of budget for us well we officially found all the tourists they're here that's how they're enjoying their Saturday and we are too so it's a little uh it's a little crazy this Cathedral is the symbol of Marseille and it is the must-see if you come to the city it is located on the highest point in the city and it is over 800 years old this church has been known as the Church of the sailors since the end of the 16th century when sailors used to come here to pray and learning that fact made it even more interesting when entering the cathedral and we got to see all the different ships hanging from the ceilings and paintings on the walls and it was very symbolic in 1214 this was only a tiny little chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary and it was built on the highest hill which is called the guard but in 1524 Francis the first built a giant Fort around it in case of a award so now it is this giant structure that we know it has today now it's completely open to the public and we haven't paid for anything I didn't pay for the bus ride we didn't have to pay to enter or walk around this entire place um the only thing we're suffering from is the wind and it's really windy up here it's absolutely beautiful you could spend all day up here if you wanted to or not so after another hectic bus ride we found a beautiful little like Courtyard area and there's so many little pizza places so of course we had to stop and get pizza because it's the cheapest thing here so [Music] well that's interesting so should you go to Marseille if you're looking for zero risk maybe not however you will be missing out on a vibrant world of cultures and art of history and fashion of kind and smiling individuals and the opportunity to gain your own perspective and understanding of this prejudge City [Music]
