VirtualBox vs VMWare Player - Which should you use?

hey guys it's bub here and in this video we're going to be comparing two of the most popular free hypervisors vmware workstation player and virtualbox these two hypervisors are some of the most popular ones that are available to download today and so many people may be a little bit confused between which one to pick so hopefully today we'll be able to establish which one is generally better first let's start off with virtualbox virtualbox is compatible with linux windows mac os and solaris on virtualbox's own website you can even access older unsupported versions of virtualbox just in case you have an older operating system like windows xp or windows vista so overall there are a lot of options to download virtualbox and is compatible with virtually anything now let's look at the latest version of workstation player as we can see workstation player is only compatible with windows and linux so compared to virtualbox this isn't a lot of choices but most people are on linux or windows now let's compare the user interfaces starting off at virtualbox it's kind of bland we have five buttons at the top and a big gray pane at the side we have preferences import export new and add personally for me i feel like new and add would get confused i could click new for a new virtual machine or i could click add to add a virtual machine so someone who wouldn't know what these two means i feel like they would definitely get it switched up so i feel like add should have a new name in preferences we have all kinds of things like general input language and that kind of stuff that's pretty simple to understand and i feel like that's very user intuitive and user friendly in the menu bar we pretty much have all the same options that we do with the little five icons in the top so there's nothing really new up here it's basic stuff overall for a free hypervisor i would say that the virtual box manager is pretty self-explanatory and pretty easy to use i feel like it could have a few more things by default but other than that i really can't ask much more from a free software now we can take a look at the alternative vmware workstation to me this is much more user friendly as each action is in big bold text with a description under it so for example create a new virtual machine open a virtual machine download a virtual appliance and then help to me this is super user intuitive and i love it we also have a list on the side that says home by default we also have a player drop down menu with file full screen unity power that kind of basic stuff we also have enter full screen mode and the green triangle is virtual machine power settings let's take a look at how easy it is to create a new virtual machine all we have to do in virtualbox is click the blue new button at the top we can select a name our operating system and where we want the virtual machine to be stored on the topic of os compatibility virtualbox is compatible with six different types of operating systems including windows linux solaris vsd os2 and mac os x after that when we click next we can now select a memory size this is very self explanatory it tells you the recommended amount of ram and it tells you what is green which is good and what's red which is not recommended so this is very easy for a beginner creating a hard disk is where things might get a little confusing for new people we have to create a new hard disk which is already selected but once we click create it then asks us what kind of hard disk we want to create we can just use the default ones go through that now we can select how big we want the hard disk to be and where we want it stored one thing virtualbox did not ask me is to select an iso so we have to do that in settings after we've created the vm in vmware player all we have to do is click the big create a new virtual machine button the first thing that player asks us to do is select an iso if the iso is detected it will use easy install a beginner will obviously love easy install and they can go through with that next it asks us for a windows product key what edition we want to install a name a password and to confirm the password this is extremely easy for new beginners now we can enter a virtual machine name and the location of the virtual machine now we can select how big we want the hard disk to be and whether we want to split it into multiple files or not back to os compatibility vmware player supports windows linux and other but i'm not really going to count others so vmware player only supports two technically so virtualbox definitely wins in that aspect how easy is it to edit our virtual machine well all we have to do is move our cursor up to the yellow settings gear at the top of our display and click it from here our settings window easily opens up here we can see general system display storage audio network serial ports usb shared folders and the user interface from here it's very simple to modify anything however one thing that i wish it had was an easy ad hardware in vmware player as you'll see there is an add hardware button at the bottom where we can easily click that and select what kind of hardware we want for me vmware players edit hardware is much easier we have a very detailed outline on the left side memory processors hard disk dvd drive that kind of thing and on the bottom there's a nice square add button that allows us to add whatever hardware is available in options there's also things to change the operating system power name that kind of stuff this one is matter of opinion but in my opinion vmware easily wins this one vmware also wins in the bios section the bios on vmware player is much more customizable with a boot menu and then we can go down to enter setup where it's the standard phoenix bios layout everything in a normal computer is here versus the bios on virtualbox doesn't exist you get a temporary boot menu that's about it you don't get this level of customization with virtualbox now we're going to run the operating system install speed test both virtual machines have the same conditions the same ram the same processor the same storage size and the same storage type 970 evo ssd for the operating system we're using windows 8.1 pro which in my opinion is one of the fastest versions of windows ever keep in mind that keep in mind that virtualbox is running off of a standard install and vmware player is running off of easy install meaning we won't have to go through any out of the box experience it jumps straight into the operating system virtualbox ended up taking about 6 minutes to install windows 8.1 which is a little bit slow for me but i'm coming from vmware workstation vmware player actually ended up taking almost a full minute more to install windows 8.1 than virtualbox did however i believe i know why as we can see here windows 8.1 on vmware player jumps straight into setting up instead of going into the out of box experience this is because we used easy install i believe that the use of easy install actually slowed down the installation because it had to enter all of our settings instead of us entering them manually i believe if we wouldn't have used easy install we would have easily beaten virtualbox with our install times virtualbox uses the virtualbox guest add-ons which in my opinion they're not as good as vmware tools we installed them we allowed them to install we then restarted our computer and then everything was full screen but after i show you vmware tools we'll see what it really did because we're using easy install vmware tools automatically opened and installed itself once vmware tools were installed it restarted and i had to manually go and make the virtual machine full screen which i'm not too mad about that that's a simple screen resolution change here's what i was talking about even after installing virtualbox guest add-ons the user interface of the operating system was still slow and laggy as we can see opening the start menu the animations lagged a tiny bit opening file explorer it's still lagging even moving windows around the screen we have rippling effects the screen resolution is turned all the way up to 1080p i really don't know what to do from here i installed windows 8.1 i put the guest add-ons on and it's still extremely laggy and it's usable but it's not i would not prefer to use this so overall i would say that the guest add-ons are not as good as vmware tools speaking of vmware tools all i had to do was go in and change the screen resolution and we were golden everything else worked very smoothly moving windows around the screen was extremely smooth and there were no graphical glitches which was great compared to virtualbox and with that being said i personally believe that vmware player is the ultimate option there's a bunch of free hypervisors out there but vmware player is truly the best one it comes from a company that makes enterprise virtualization software it can be extremely customized in the bios and in vmware settings and with that being said thank you so much for watching make sure to like and subscribe if you're
