hi I'm Mary McCarthy executive director of the vehicle join me as we take a trip around the world and look at international foods coming advice how are they the same how are they different and what can we learn from them thanks for joining me for those of us who live close to shorelines hunting for treasure is something that's part of our lives and close to our hearts whether it's once a year once a season or every single day knowing the cycles of the Moon and the rising and falling of the tides comes naturally to many from around the world as we search for shells glass pottery fossils or other Beach combed finds in different parts of the world what we find varies on those different beaches and shorelines and in some places it can often be the same depending on the source of the fines German porcelain dolls for example were exported from all over the world and can be discovered on beaches worldwide particularly on a landfill Beach often coastal erosion and coastal land fills on bays and rivers around the world reveals fines that may not be wave worn like those found after many years in the ocean in England the discoveries of mudlark errs on the thames differ greatly from beach fines on the northeast coast of england that in addition to multis from the r-class manufacturer industry also include ancient fossils in the area these local fines are notable to the UK the glow of the seafoam glass found on the north east coast is rarely found in other places in nearby scotland there were many Potteries of different sizes that manufactured wares from the mid 18th to the mid 20th centuries the production of sponge where a particular method using hand decorated sponge application is identifiable to the region as a beach find as well as kiln stilts used during the manufacturing process by local Potteries and brick makers coastal landfills in scotland produce gorgeous glass finds of all time dundie marmalade shards from the James Keeler company are another recognizable Beach find with roots in Scotland in Italy morano's reputation as a center for glass making was born in 1291 when the Venetian Republic feared fire and the destruction of the cities mostly wooden buildings and ordered glass makers to move their furnaces to Murano the rich glass making history there continues to be evidenced in the glorious colorful glass discovered in that region by local beachcombers currently the longest-running glass manufacturer there was founded in 1866 many keepsake finds are specific to the beaches of Japan glass and wooden float making is an art form in Japan where there is a rich history dating back a century beautiful pottery with distinctive blue and white patterns o rajeesh flat playing pieces and rich TLC glass sourced from sake bottles are examples of some desirable Beach vines that have origins in Japan which is also renowned for a wide variety of gorgeous seashells there are so many specific types of finds that identify a Beach find immediately to a certain place the are class of Lumbergh studios found in santa cruz california is particularly identifiable the rods found in Spain from the glass making there are distinctive as are the beautiful floor tiles found in Greece and Turkey the urchins and shells of Australia are rich in their diversity of size color and variety even rocks can tell a story wishing rocks are only found on certain beaches around the world coastal landfills of the east coast of the United States produce unique Victorian finds and on the Chesapeake Bay Calvert Cliffs has a rich history dating back 10 to 20 million years with shark tooth and prehistoric shell finds on the beach cobalt blue glass was manufactured by the Maryland glass corporation so is found more frequently on the Chesapeake Bay other country's beaches have fines particular to them whether a certain color of glass manufactured locally commonly a bottle style from a local bottler a pottery manufactured by a local potter michelle whose creature thrives in local waters a shark that once swam and its waters our beaches are all rich with history discovering the origins of our finds is one thing that brings us together in the beachcombing community in addition to our common love of the serenity that we find on the shoreline hopefully a desire to keep the ocean clean in an effort to pick up trash before treasure when we beach comb is another common goal for the community as well thanks for stopping by the Chesapeake Bay today please stop by our website at the beach coming soon or we have a resource section where you can learn more about those swimming fines from around the world
