great voice great songwriter and a killer guitar player because anybody knows the car playing knows the fact that you could really play this thing all set you up for a Grammy for instrumental of the year soldiers joy yeah with my buddy Randy Scruggs there you go one story dire straits Mark Knopfler a great guitar player the legend is they were tried to recruit you for dire straits yeah mark in 1989 came to actually to New York City we were a friend of mine Greg Taverna who lives here we're sitting down recounting the story says if it wasn't from a mistake in ten years ago I think he came to see you we played at the that left are okay there Lone Star and Mark came to see us and he came and said do you have any interest in being in dire straits and I said oh my gosh yeah I would love to be but I just signed a new contract with MCA records and I've kind of struggled for you know six or seven years trying to get some songs on the radio and one very successful and uh I just really believe in this new Union and the record I just made and I didn't know if anything was gonna happen but you know I turned down a pretty good deal you know just kind of take a shot and then it turned out to be you know I would have loved to have done it you know musically I really admire him so so much and but as a career move I finally made one right well let's go back to the phones this gentleman whose name is Chet he's from Nashville hello Chet hi what's your last name Chet Atkins thank you very much how you doing Chester pretty good Vance I wonder if you could play God next week yeah I'm in ok you better bundle up though son well I'm not but I'll be thinking about you man it's great to talk to you and you feeling do you still do that turn oh yes sir how'd you do that once I think it was a live recording or something and with an audience and I was amazed at your great guitar plan and I still am every time I hear you and this one with you a couple times recently where you played mandolin to you and you're not bad on that thanks buddy he can play Chet Atkins made you play yeah ok my guitar here I remember the first time I sat down with Chet was a few years ago I did a show in Nashville with Ralph Emery and it was kind of a documentary on my life and stuff and and Chet came out and it was the first time I'd ever had the opportunity to play music with my definite guitar hero of all time and I remember he started playing he said come on play and my hands would not go on the guitar and I revere him so much so Chet I'm gonna play play my heart out for you buddy [Applause] I used to not go or something with come on tell her that she's wrong I'll need no Texas girl that I'll get me around okay son but I still be in the town they always treat you right I'm coming home so he parks in my pocket and my thumbs up in the wind crossbars pump it back motor stops 18 wheels mine [Music] Oh we'll try to figure just lucky [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
