field conditions yeah i couldn't ask for better conditions than this and the team seemed ready to go so yeah it should be a good game here and you know what uh i'll be honest with folks here i'm from northwest iowa i don't know much about nine-man football over in iowa we have eight man football but i talked with coach rob kessler of the vyberg hurley cougars before the game they were 9-1 last season and i believe they lost in the semi-final round of the playoffs to uh is it plaque gettys plat gettus the eventual champion that's what he said and uh you know talk with coach kessler he says you know that was a really close game for us so you know we still have that taste in our mouth these kids have seen some success and they want to come back and have that again here this next year about the starting lineups here we'll go over the visitors here first for the blue dragons we'll go over offensive starters here looks like they're going to start with dylan kent as their quarterback he is a senior he is six foot one 160 then your center is gabe johnson he wears number 74. he's 6-2 290 mike you take a look at him uh sometimes you can take a look at football players go man we're going to have a match-up problem with him and that's one of those kids he's a big boy out there he definitely is in nine-man football you can definitely tell definitely right also on the offensive line dylan jessen uh will be on the offensive line also jayden richter the other offensive lineman and then i believe the two ends are ryan flanagan and caden oringe is how that is pronounced and then they have uh two wide receivers i believe cooper long he's a junior and then you have senior chase miller your running back is hunter abraham that will be the offense we'll see first as the garrison blue dragons did elect to receive the kickoff so we'll take a look at the defensive setup here for the vyberg hurley cougars at your safety it's byron osterlu your corner hayden gilbert defensive ends are blake schroedermeyer and gage goddarts and then you have george johnson a defensive back and then you connor kessler plays linebacker rafe godoretz is a tackle nose tackle is jason campbell and linebacker is shane harm so kicking things off looks like this will be number three hayden gilbert i believe hayden gilbert will kick things off and nine-man football they kick off from the 30-yard line so it'll be gilbert to kick things off back deep to receive we have dylan kent is one player back there also jace miller back to receive this kick it's going to be kent going to pick it up at the 10. makes a little cut to the outside he's wrapped up real quick right around the 14-yard line and mike you know he got that ball and uh you really didn't have a whole lot of opportunity he didn't have much blocking downfield no he didn't they uh vyberg hurley covered that really well so here comes the blue dragons they'll start the ball their own 14 well actually they're going to mark it right at the 15 yard line opening quarter 11 56 to go so the garrison blue dragons coming off a two and seven campaign last season looking to improve under that under the direction of chris long kint going to be in the shotgun has a running back to his right and now a linebacker moves up the line four man front man goes in motion kent this will be a quarterback option he's gonna keep it and he is gonna be absolutely buried back at the five-yard line and that is blake schroedermyer he's the quarterback defensive inn he's 6-3 215 tough to match up with a big body like that it is it is you know when you're dealing with small towns big bodies go a long way you're exactly right and uh before the game i was talking uh with coach rob kessler he goes you know how many quarterbacks do you see play defensive end i said well you know an eight-man iowa we see you know we see that a little bit too so you got to put your best athletes in their position where they can excel here's dylan kent waiting for the quarterback has a man to his left two wide receivers one left one right the lefty drops back he's gonna load up has a man downfield over through his receiver cooper long ball probably would have went right around the 35 yard line would have had about uh you know probably a gain of about 25 30 yards because they're you know have third down and 10 or excuse me 20 coming up here so third down and board says about 17 ball is back at their own looks like six yard line and for the blue dragons you'd like to give yourself a little bit of room here to get off a good punt get back out of your own end zone kent in the backfield with him i believe is uh miller and kent drops back to pass in his own end zone he's got to get rid of it steps up in the pocket throws across the middle nice reception there and not enough for a first down jace miller picks up 16 yards [Music] so he is one yard short so now you're in a tough spot fourth down and one yeah so close to your own end zone but you hate to let it sit there too looks like they're going to go for it here you can always you know in an 80 yard field you can always kind of do a little pooch punt too yeah here's kent has miller in the backfield with him kent waiting for the snap he is a lefty oh he got him offsides that's a free first down i think uh jumping across the line there that was uh maybe number 52 connor kessler and well is it going to be an offensive uh let's see yeah the way the official is set up looks like they're going to march this thing back oh nope they're going to say it was offsides encroachment on the defense there the right tackle did jump but i believe that was after viber curly had crossed the line so just the reaction from from the other side so the blue dragons have another opportunity ten and a half minutes to go here opening quarter no score and kent going to kind of regroup his troops here as we have no score 10 19 to go after the free first down vyberg hurley doesn't want to do that you know you'll look back at the game and you think what can we improve on that's something they'll watch in the tape room probably tomorrow and discuss here's kent he's gonna wait for the snap oh bad handoff and it's gonna be vibrant hurley ball i think he was trying to hand the ball off to carson clark and uh who came up with it i think that was kessler number 52 so connor kessler jumps off sides what do you do to redeem yourself you jump on a loose football and it's going to be ryberg hurley cougar ball right at the let's see i think that's at the 27 yard line 28 yard line so quarterback is blake schroedemeyer schroedemeyer he is a senior 6-3 195 and they're gonna run up i formation man goes in motion schroedermeyer waiting for the snap gonna hand this off to his tail back that's kessler bounces around the outside cuts back up the middle he's gonna have a first down we have some laundry on the field otherwise it's gonna be a pickup of about 13 yards kessler did a nice job waiting for his blocks to develop use a little bounce out move to the outside and got the first down but looks like it's coming back yeah just judging vyberg hurley's yep it's gonna be a holding penalty so that will move them back it'll be first down and long 9 57 to go here opening quarter no score between the cougars and the blue dragons who do you think would win in a fight between a cougar and a blue dragon i guess i don't know what a blue dragon is probably a mythical creature i believe if they're the fire breathing kind you automatically give them the benefit i think that's true so here we go it's gonna bring up first down and 15 to go ball back at the 34 yard line strodemyer under center waiting for the snap gonna hand this off to kessel looks like the same play and he's gonna push forward keeping those legs churning and he's gonna pick up about eight yards kessler moves the ball forward for about eight yards and that's going to make second down a whole lot more manageable as you'll have second down and about seven to go here with 9 24 to go opening quarter no score here in vyberg here this evening the cougars jumped on a loose fumble football just a few moments ago then had a penalty to move them back in an 8-yard run by kessler and here's schroder meyer under center waiting for the snap and same play again kessler trying to bounce on the outside not a whole lot there he's going to pick up about three yards gonna bring up a very very manageable third down that's what you you want to do is you want to get yourself in good positions where you can you know feel good about moving forward on third down even if you get a couple yards here you're deep into the opponent's territory you can continue to ground and pound the football if that's what you want to do gives you a lot of options when you're when it's short like this especially the way they've been running it so far yeah this uh you know even here you can maybe take a shot you know maybe go a little play action shorter meyer under center man goes in motion that's johnson and yep there's that play action schrodermeyer gonna dump one over the top and that's gonna be six points for vyberg hurley think in on that tackle for the cougars that was number 45 wyatt huber in on the tackle there tell you one thing i'm impressed with this vyberg hurley team is their downfield coverage on special teams yeah their special teams coverage they've been known for that for years and yeah not letting them get it outside the 20 at all is pretty impressive all right so here comes dylan kent and the blue dragons of garrettson went 2-7 last year kent is senior 6-1 160 he's a south paw lefty has miller in the backfield with him and he's going to push them all to the outside caught and that is caught by number 23 that is tyson suatek and he's going to pick up uh i think they gave him exactly 10 yards on that right at the 30-yard line given the first down on that one got the 26 so yep so first down and 10. so he picked up 10 yards on that one so kent and the blue dragons will line up again tell you out there gabe johnson big center 6-2 290. waiting for the snapping shotgun we'll play action he's got to get rid of it throws the ball across his body has a receiver and he got it out to cooper long and he's gonna pick up about eight yards right to the 35 yard line so with 808 to go here in the opening quarter it's eight nothing in favor of the cougars of vyberg hurley last year suffered a loss in the semi final in classes at nine a or nine double a nine double a nine double play so is 9a are those a little bit bigger schools or is smaller a little bit smaller okay smaller nine double a 9a 9b must be i think there was maybe an unsportsmanlike conduct so a 15-yard penalty will flip the field and move the ball to the 20-yard or 30-yard line into cougar territory so kent here with an opportunity to get the blue dragons on the scoreboard first and ten gonna hand this off to his tail back and he's going to push forward he's going to pick up about eight yards on that that was hunter abraham abraham pushes forward for we'll give him seven yards second down and three to go 7 53 to go in the opening quarter the cougars leading 8-0 here week zero friday night football so kent going to line up in shotgun again has abraham his left has a receiver left right two end set waiting for the snap kent gets the snap he's gonna drop back they said a blitz he throws one up to the corner and good defense but there's gonna be a flag i don't think the defender there for the cougars got his head turned around to make a play on the ball i think that is going to be byron osterlu so i think we're going to have a pass interference against the cougars and right now osterlu is just talking things over with the officials hey what can i do to you know fix that next time i have no problem with kids going up to officials and saying hey what did i do wrong it's kind of when they get the attitude is when officials don't like it but you can tell a lot by body language exactly they're actually asking with an intent to learn that especially game one of the seasons game one of the season is always a learning process exactly right so it's gonna be first down and looks like actually 10 to go ball at the 11-yard line so they get a first down without scoring kent this is going to be a quarterback keeper pushes forward wrapped up pretty much at the line of scrimmage by connor kessler the 5-9 senior good read there actually lost a yard on it so they'll move him back gonna bring up second down and 11 ball at the 12 yard line 702 to go opening quarter cougars lead eight nothing and it's dylan kent has abraham flanagan wide out left out to the right side is swatek and now we've got a flag some laundry on the field before the play can get set in motion and that's something you'll see you know in early season games false start on the offense so yeah your first game of the season they call it week zero for a reason they're they're still learning feeling it out you know one interesting thing to watch is garrettson is actually coming down from 11b this is their first game as a nine man in a number of years okay i did not know that so yeah there's probably a little bit of a learning curve there as well yeah i think in iowa i think they re look at things like every two years to kind of get those classifications six and a half to go here in the opening quarter kent waits for the snap he's gonna drop back has to get rid of it throws one over the middle what a pass for a touchdown to cooper long from 17 yards out i tell you what kim put that ball right where only only cooper long could get to it and he just threw a dart i honestly thought it was going to be intercepted when i first saw it saw the coverage and so you know that was a well-thrown ball yeah gilbert was there you know had good good coverage all right believe we'll have an extra point attempt yeah number five that was kind of a like a jump ball in basketball just had to go up and get it come down with it and don't expect to do much it's when you try and take off with it is when you kind of maybe get in some trouble yeah that's when the no hands people are up front and yeah they decide oh that's the time i'm going to try to score touch i'm going to try and take one here all right so it's direct snap to kessler and he's gonna be stuffed up right away but he still uses his big frame to absorb the hit and spin for about two yards he is a stocky guy you know he is he's listed at 59 205. that'll do it and you can tell he's a kid that probably lifts quite a few weights he looks like it so 5 25 to go here in the opening quarter eight to seven in favor of vyberg hurley nine player football here week number zero schroedemeyer gonna go under center has i for mason i formation with kessler in the backfield is the deep back gonna hand off to the fullback and that's gonna be enough for a first down three yards as he hands it off to byron osterlu who was lined up as the fullback i did notice he said nine player that is the unique thing about garrett's and they do have a female kicker that they got from their soccer team that made that extra point for him earlier yeah i was watching her uh you know do some extra you know warming up before the game she seems really consistent as well yo schroedermeyer going to go on shotgun has kessler to his right it's going to be a direct snap now pitches it back to kessler now goes to schroedemeyer now back to kessler and all that for know rip off for 25 30 yards but you know the defense of garrettson did a fairly good job of you know kind of staying home and not falling for the uh the trickery they did especially this early in the the middle good for about three yards blake schroedemeyer picks it up you know blake show tomorrow like you're saying mike before the game yo he's 6'3 215. i'd like to kind of see them run the option with him a little bit more yeah i'm surprised they haven't and that might be something they try to add in a little bit i saw him doing it during warm-ups so if you don't have to do it right away in the season don't show don't show all your cards as they say exactly just under four to go opening quarter vyberg hurley leading by one quarterback is blake schrodermeyer this is going to be a quarterback option to the left side he's gonna get a couple blocks puts his shoulder down and picks up about another three yards that was schroedermeyer had a block from abraham so it's gonna be second down and about seven to go kind of a tough spot in the field to see where they're at here it is they should have i'm gonna this is bad to say is the outside critic but they should have built this press box about 20 yards further back but i kind of like you know you kind of feel like you're right in the action here schroedermeyer throws it over his receiver's head that's a live ball as it was not a forward progression pass and uh who was that over there that was um number 17 george johnson didn't didn't think to fall on it i think that was uh dylan kent the quarterback you know playing the safety on the defensive side says hey that's a live football that's a turnover so 3 37 to go here in the opening quarter vyberg hurley turns the ball over and not sure if you could hear but rob kessler right in front of us the uh uh the head coach he's saying hey guys you got to use your heads yep i believe that's exactly what he said word for word says you got to use your heads play good football so it's gonna be first down and ten off their own 25 this might be the best starting position here this evening for the blue dragons i believe it is because every other one has been inside their own 20s so we'll start with 25 and the quarterback is kent in the backfield with her hunter abraham he has 18 total yards eight on the ground 10 through the air and this will be a handoff to abraham and he's got a little bit of a hole on the left side and they'll blow it dead he's lost his forward progression kind of had his leg wrapped up high i think that was kessler on the tackle number 52 he picked up i'm gonna give him some good forward progression on that game five yards so now 13 yards on the ground for abraham so far down and five ball at the 30 yard line ball of the nose or five of them here early in the first quarters we still have 253 to go in the opening quarter yeah they've given garrettson a number of first downs already kept drives alive yeah garrison they had the ball in the opening drive of the game and got him to jump on a fourth down and one all right here is kent the quarterback abraham right there with him the lefty throws it to the outside and just not on the same page he was trying to go over to tayson swatteck swatek didn't quite get turned around in time 239 to go here in the opening quarter and it's vyberg hurley eight garretson seven but garrettson is trying to move the ball right now they're at the 30-yard line in cougar territory same formation again receiver out wide to the right side caden achenge a lot of movement up front here jumps back to pass throws down the left side caught and we have a penalty i think that'll be pass interference but that'll be waived off that is a 29 yard reception out to cooper long yeah you can't get much closer to the goal line than that i i would think you would decline this yeah give give them the stats yeah and the defender just got beat and he knew it that's one thing viber hurley here has kind of struggled with this turning around and finding the ball and it'll be first down first and goal from the one yard line 2 34 to go here in the opening quarter garrettson looking to take a lead dylan kent going to line up in shotgun has abraham to his left and here's kent gets the snap he's going to roll around the left side pushes forward did he get in yes so kent a one yard touchdown vyburg uh i have two sisters and one's actually a year younger than me and plays volleyball and basketball with me sounds good so uh delane is that what you said yep delaney so are you and your sister are pretty competitive with each other oh yeah very competitive since we're a little with both volleyball and basketball we're both middle hitters and volleyball so we're always competing for uh which one of us is better so so who is the better athlete me for sure definitely so uh what other sports do you like to play here at vibrant hurley um basketball and volleyball yeah basketball and volleyball uh so uh how did your season go last year you were a junior last year how did you guys do last year on the volleyball yes um well actually i uh bro injured my ankle very badly in like the sixth game so uh we had a lot of issues with covid and different injuries so our season wasn't very good last year but we're hoping this year we have a lot of the same girls returning and a lot of protect a potential for this season definitely yeah that's always something good so uh yeah how many seniors are out for volleyball yes too just you too so so uh what type of leader are you are you are you maybe a loud leader maybe a quiet leader or yeah i'm the loud leader like as you can see i'm talking first i kind of like yell at the younger ones and i'm kind of like the mean one and like i'll yell at the younger ones if they aren't listed she's kind of like the quiet one she's like oh it's okay and i'm yelling at him so so uh good cop bad cop yeah so uh when do you guys start school uh we start school tuesday the 26th so uh enjoy 24th yeah i think that would be yeah i think 23rd is monday so i think yeah i think i think that's right yeah so are you looking forward to getting back to school or do you wish summer would go on a little bit longer i'm excited for senior year to be different than the rest and uh yeah sports i'm ready for sports ready for sports especially with uh can maybe start getting to uh kent just a little bit quicker make him uh you know force the ball out of his hand i think that would prove big dividends for the cougars it would because he's not afraid to stand in there so they need to get to him sooner and you've mentioned it multiple times how he's willing to throw the ball before his receivers have turned they have a relationship yep and that goes a long way but if you can force him to throw it half a tick sooner before they've turned around then it's going to be there too soon it's going to throw off that whole rhythm and i think you know vibrate hurley you know they've had some success running the ball uh connor kessler a senior a lot of touches 41 yards uh hayden gilbert has 38 receiving yards and uh also uh byron ossolu has 18 receiving yards so uh you know that you know vyberg i'm going to give him credit you know they're they're in this game and they're staying very balanced you like the running pass to be very balanced they are and you know they've had a couple of bad bounces whether it's been calls that may have gone there not gone their way or something like that but they've hurt themselves had a few wrong bad bounces so if they can uh correct some of that they should have a pretty good second half and it's gonna be johnson back to receive this kick they haven't kicked to him all night i would be very right back to him and yeah you know connor kessler if you would have told me connor kessler would have went out in this game and uh you know they'd still be in it i would have said no way but tell you what this luke campbell he's come in he's scored a touchdown uh he's running the ball strong and he's like you said mike he's a little bit of a different look uh kessler uh kind of that jerome bettis michael stott you'll run you over whereas you know campbell's kind of more east and west and then i'm going to go south on you and he's got speed to the edges so i you know really i've been calling football games i think this is year number 10 or 11 for me and i think i've only had one overtime game oh really in all those years and that was out to really at ahstw i think it was the second round of the playoffs uh so i've never seen it in eight man and uh certainly never seen it nine man because this is my first nine man game uh it's it's a fun game here that you guys have in south dakota yeah you know there's a lot more movement with nine man you know and that that's kind of the beauty of it um a little more speed involved i i'm kind of surprised at kind of the pound ground and pound yep i'm used to nine men that i've that i have watched has always been a little more aerial yeah i think yeah kind of like you said more moving pieces yeah you get receivers moving and maybe some sweeps and things like that um yeah and just you know observing from you know kind of an outside perspective i guess here uh it seems like whenever you get deep in the playoffs or state you know semifinals or state championship games uh it seems like you know the teams that are successful at that point can still line up and go i formation and grind out three or four yards when you absolutely have to as opposed to teams that you know i've never understood you know if you go shotgun you're going to snap the ball three yards back to go one yard forward i yeah it and that is the one thing because you kind of knew every time what was going to happen when vibrate hurley went under center you're like yep okay this this limits exactly what they're going to do so but they've stayed balanced they've you know uh schroeder meyer has completed quite a few passes uh gilbert's had he's got 43 rushing yards so of course they want to play in the end zone that we can't see of course so we'll see who gets the ball first here i think do they start at the 20. maybe the 15 probably the 15. yeah i'm thinking the 15. but this is all new to me too yes you know i don't get a chance to see nine-man football other than you know state state finals for the most part yes so actually it looks like they're going from the 10 yard line looks like vyberg hurley is going to get first crack at it on the it needed to be so now you're looking at third down and goal i believe yes third down and eight one two three four five six seven eight nine ten i think they got ten guys on the field yeah looks like he got off all right if garrettson had caught that would have been an easy fight kent waiting for the snap low snap drops back has to get rid of it and he's got a receiver touchdown touchdown to cooper long [Music] eight yards out [Music] so cooper long so there's a well-designed play [Music] now the she hasn't kicked in a while but do you put it uh do you put your faith in the foot of jenna come down to uh nine man and uh and you know their losses i mean they had some big big losses but a lot of the losses they had weren't huge you know so no it's not like they were two and seven that was a definitive two and seven they could have easily been you know five and four because they did have enough power points to make the playoffs last year so two and seven got them in so yeah definitely a good season last year now they're 1-0 this year their first year nine-man uh we'll take a one-minute timeout we'll be back with some final stats here but uh garrettson comes in here and on their team and so when you're having to keep your your first team out there and you can't substitute out and you're having to fight and fight and fight it eventually just takes it out of you um and so it happens in the in the devils in the details at that point and uh it's a great way for garrettson to end the game though uh for jenna yeah to get the game-winning kick you know that's that's just a great story it is a nice ending for uh the uh cougar or the uh blue dragons of garrison final stats here for vyberg hurley uh through the air uh or brian byron osterlu had six rushing yards 28 receiving yards hayden gilbert uh he did have 53 receiving yards i believe a touchdown in there as well uh blake schroedemeyer had six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve uh rushing yards this evening and george johnson had 15 yards receiving uh or 15 yards rushing uh 56 receiving luke campbell comes into the game late he had 17 18 19 20. uh let's see 30 40 rushing yards i think all those were in the fourth quarter 40 rushing yards for luke campbell so that's another weapon this uh coach kessler can kind of you know add to his playbook moving forward uh connor kessler 118 yards on the ground
