good morning youtubes so today i am going to do some verticutting so last year my grass started getting a little spongy and um it was really so thick that that my mower started floating on top of the grass instead of rolling on the ground so i knew i needed to do some defatching so this summer or the spring i should say and the growing season i've i've decided to do some verticutting so um purchased this unit here this is a sun joe uh it's called a dethatcher and scarifier but this is this is just like verticating here so you've got these blades here these tines they're going to rotate and dig into the digging to the grass these are an inch and a quarter of spacing here so it's gonna it's gonna do a lot of uh a lot of damage to the grass but permeate is tough and uh it can stand it withstand it and it'll bounce back quickly so what i've done first is i've cut the grass down lower than than i normally cut it to prepare for this i'm going to run this across in two different directions 90 degrees apart and then i'm going to suck up the what it's pulled up the thatch and whatnot i think it's going to be a lot of work here but in the end i'm going to have some healthier turf the um the thatch is really just starving starving the grass if you will starving it of nutrients preventing water from penetrating into the soil so this is going to be a good thing overall but it's going to take two or three three weeks to recover so hang on we'll get into it [Music] so okay we're almost done with the first pass you can see it's taking up a good bit of thatch if we look at this a lot of it is just organic matter that is just not decomposing very quickly so that's what this is taking up and that's really the the reason for the the spongy feel so uh definitely going to be a lot of work and cleaning it up though all right so uh we are finished up here a lot of work so we did again we use the sun joe to do the verdict cutting in two directions 90 degrees apart then we follow by cleaning it up with a ride and mower suck that up all the clippings and all the thatch then we did a push mower just a rotary type and then i did several passes with the with the reel mower and uh you can really tell that that patch is gone because i had a lot of clippings i cut this at the same height yesterday but i had a ton of clippings that i picked up so that's uh over there's the amount of clippings that i got a little bit of the truck here too you can see the amount of patch here so it's just a really a problem i needed to deal with i've never dethatched before so uh i expect the the turf to be much healthier i've had some problems with dollar spots so i think that extra circulation with air may help but it's a lot of work and uh so right now we've we've beat this grass up pretty bad there's some scalping in some places um so uh but it but it feels much better not as much sponginess to it so what we're going to do now is i'm going to follow up with uh with a good good fertilizer to help it recover and give it some water so we'll check back in and in about two or three weeks and i'll show you what what the results are talk to you later okay so two weeks have passed since we did the verdict cutting um i am very pleased with the results i want to i'll turn the camera around let you take a look at it for you see for yourself um but recovering pretty nicely here got a spot over there that's uh slow to recover i it was beat up pretty bad with the scalping there was some tearing there but overall much better the the quality of cut that i'm getting is much better um the the mower is not floating on the on top of the turf now it is actually sitting level on the on the soil so uh much better there so um hope you liked the video like subscribe hit that bell talk to you later
