it's no secret that i love to garden vertically if you spend time in my garden you'll notice any number of vertical structures i use just about anything and everything to grow up in today's video i'm going to show you all of the different vertical structures in my garden give you the pros and cons of each and kind of give you the background and the how-to if you'd like to try it yourself if we haven't met before my name's angela from growing in the garden and i love to share garden inspiration and helpful tips so you can be successful growing your own garden the number one reason that i love to garden vertically is it adds more space to your garden who doesn't want to grow more and less space adding vertical space takes advantage of the vertical space in your garden it keeps things up off the ground and gives you more room to grow the structures i'm going to share with you range from something you could find at goodwill or your hardware store to things that you can order online or you may need to know a welder or be a welder to make some of these things this is the very first type of vertical structure that i added to my garden it's simply electrical conduit with plumbing fittings and then some wire panel that i have zip tied to the frame to secure this trellis you have a two foot piece of rebar that you put down into the ground about a foot and then you slide the electrical conduit over it so it's really secure it holds it in place really well really don't need any tools i had the pieces cut for me at the hardware store this trellis is that same type of structure you can see here the plumbing fittings the conduit and the panel currently this one is covered in cucumber and vines so it's a little bit hard to see the trellis but you can see why growing vertically and having vertical structures in your garden is so important it gives these plants a place to climb so here we have the same basic type of structure but it connects across the top so there's two that are a little bit taller they're inserted in the ground the same way with the rebar they're a little bit taller and then it forms together like a puzzle on the top the wire panel isn't quite large enough kind of bent it over the top here and over the top here and they don't quite meet but somehow the vegetables still find a way to get across so this is a great simple trellis structure i found that using the metal zip ties makes it last quite a bit longer the plastic ones even the heavy duty plastic ones just bake right off the arizona sun [Music] growing vertically also allows for more air and sunlight to reach her plants the added sunlight and air circulation keeps plants healthier and happier adequate airflow around plants is one of the best ways to prevent diseases like powdery mildew [Music] i also have several of these type of rebar structures basically it's rebar welded together and then screwed into the block wall a neighbor made these for me i don't pretend to be a welder but i believe they're pretty simple welding though looks like just pieces of rebar welded together with an attachment piece like that that is then screwed into the wall so i have several of these throughout my garden these trellises give some structure to the block wall makes it a little bit easier to grow vertically here along the block wall it's difficult to see under here but there's just a simple trellis attached to the block wall here this gets covered in the honeysuckle and we really like it gives a nice kind of green wall to the pool fence area [Music] although it's hard to see under here this was just a simple trellis purchase it i believe at lowe's really simple this did require some support and so what we did was put the wood supports in the ground and then tied them to it not very fancy this just makes it a little bit more secure having the supports go down into the ground and then be attached again because it's coral line season it's really hard to see this trellis pre-made purchase trellis it has really held up pretty well right now it is covered in the coral vine which we love other times of the year it's just green and then in early spring after frost we cut it clear back to the ground and it's just empty so at that point you can see the structure of the trellis we love it when it's all covered in coral vine in the fall another reason i love to grow vertically is that it gets the plants up off the ground i don't know about you but i have a lot of roly-polies and other bugs on the ground that when plants are on the ground they think that it's meant for them so getting those plants up off the ground and onto some sort of vertical structure gets them away from those ground insects that like to feast on my plants [Music] i also have several of these structures it's basically the wire panel in a frame welded together and then attached to the wall this really takes advantage of the vertical growing space on the block wall when plants are sprawled all over the ground it's difficult to see what's going on you don't know if there are female flowers that need to be pollinated or fruits that are growing that you're not aware of growing vertically ensures that you have a good idea of what's going on with your plants if pests become a problem if disease becomes a problem it's much easier to spot as you look at the leaves as they're growing up rather than rooting around on the ground to see what's going on with your plant [Music] i'm often asked about this structure this was made for me by a neighbor he welded it again i believe it's fairly simple welding this is rebar he's just taken different pieces put them together if i want to add shade to my garden this is an easy way to add shade across these but i'll give you a little bit of a close-up so you can see how it's made so then each piece is attached to the bed and there is a bracket that goes along here to give it a little bit more support another one over here you can kind of see the whole the whole thing so these go up in between the beds so there's room for the crops to climb up and over another way to garden vertically is i have these old bladders here this one is covered in purple hyacinth vine and another ladder is kind of hiding back in there those are really inexpensive easy way to add vertical space to your garden as well vertically also makes vegetables and fruits much easier to harvest it's easier to see the fruits ripening and developing and you can pick them at just the right time it's easier to access the fruits rather than stepping and stomping on vines and sprawling plants on the ground these are the hardine rose arches from gardner's supply company they're pretty easy to put together and they seem to be fairly sturdy i've just got them in the beds here they seem to be fine again different things have grown up these i like the spacing of the grid as well so these are a great addition easy way to add vertical space and no tools or anything needed to make these comes in a box and you put the pieces together fairly simple [Music] gardening vertically may be as simple as just a steak put into the ground zucchini is just growing up a simple garden steak [Music] spending a little bit of time in your garden each day and paying attention to those vining plants shows you when it's time to add another clip or tie something on or simply weave a plant in and around the trellis spend a little time each day paying attention to your plants and they will happily grow vertically [Music] this is one of my favorite ways to add vertical space it checks all the boxes it is very inexpensive very easy to do and it's also temporary so you can put these wherever you need them really super simple i find myself using them in different areas all around the garden each season especially during the summer when there's a lot of vining crops these are ladder mesh block readily available at home improvement stores in the concrete section you put one end in the soil bend it put the other end in and you're good to go could not be easier very inexpensive they're usually around three or four dollars storing a stack of these does not take a lot of room it's also an easy way to cover your plants if you want to put these in place and then add tool or netting for insect or frost protection over your plants [Music] so these are vertex tomato cages right now i have peppers in them these are also from gardener supply one thing i really like about these is the ability to put them on the plants after they're growing that's one of the the biggest advantages with these really lightweight easy to store they will last a long time they are a little bit expensive but you won't ever need to replace them so here's another vertex cage under here with a cucumber growing on it this is actually the tall vertex cage you can see how tall that is it is enormous the winter squash has made it to the top of this cage which keeps it up off the ground [Music] these arches are the newest addition to the garden i put these beds in back in march and knew i wanted to have a vertical structure so i had these built for me by two brothers metalworks he welded these together did a great job so it's three separate arches that together make this tunnel each part is cemented in and it's welded so it is very sturdy this is not going anywhere it's been in since march but it's already had many many things growing on it and i know through the years it will have many more [Music] now you've seen the ways that i like to garden vertically in my garden tell me in the comments some of the ways that you're gardening vertically and give me some new ideas if you have questions about some of the structures leave them in the comments i will hop on and answer as many as i can hopefully you've come away with an idea of a way that you can garden vertically in your own garden thank you so much for watching
