of course just played nine games so far this being his tenth in the auburn uniform and you see where sharif cooper stands in division one this year he would rank second in scoring in the conference right now and be the clear leader in assist if he played enough games sure almost almost nine assists per game and coach pearl talking to us today before the game i mean just couldn't say enough things about cooper's game brilliant pass or incredible vision he said can really get to the basket free throws such a big part of his game and even though his shooting numbers aren't as good as as they you know as they look on paper certainly he is a better shooter than what it appears and he's just waiting for that to click and then once that does watch out yeah it'll take some time and it's going to take some time with this auburn team right when sharif cooper came back there were so many people that had not seen how he was going to work with this auburn team and you think about an auger team that lost the likes of a chumo kiki the years before obviously in isaac ocoro i think 11 players over the last couple of years since they made that final four run in an sec regular tournament title and conference tournament title they're trying to figure it out against a vanderbilt team who was hungry and i think improving night in and night out that shot is blocked go the other way clevon brown got a piece of that and it'll belong to auburn tigers big three-point shooting team both these teams are but they are oh for five to start this game from behind the arc and they're one of eight overall from the field just two points for a team averaging 79 points a game and they have gone over 80 in their last four conference games and dave that's one of the things that you're going to see when you have quality point guard play you're going to see the offenses that are normally clicking much better than when you have questionable point guard play auburn just to kind of back up some of those offensive numbers as we look at the blocked shot there but this auburn team has averaged 91 points a game over their last four conference games and if they can get there tonight which would be a miracle at this point but used to say they couldn't right but if they could get there for a fifth straight game against league opponents that'd be the first time since they did it since 1999. you might know something about that fish just saying yeah yeah yeah it was just a couple of seasons ago right yeah you had hair back then [Laughter] your teams at auburn the late 90s could score with the best of and here's the them long rebound to the hands of alan flanagan nice pass by alan flanagan and williams just not able to finish but goes up the second time a nice job of being persistent and staying with it you mentioned today offense not the problem for either of these teams defensively is where they both have to continue to the improve lines up a three and that's off the front of the rim rebound into the hands of jalen williams wow a lot of contact on that file and there's brown again defending the iron auburn one of the best teams in the nation they're blocking shots and most people don't talk about it they alter just as many shots their problem is this here just not being able to stay in front of the ball coach bruce pearl said yeah we blocked so many shots because we can't keep it in front of us can't stop him from penetrating into the lane but here's vanderbilt they get in the lane right to maxwell evans travels with it and will give it right back to auburn in a 9-4 game dylan de soup young man just a sophomore 6-9 220 a really big mismatch for a lot of teams with his ability to stretch the floor out yeah i really like his game when you think about dylan de sue he's another one of those guys that made a an incredible jump from his freshman to sophomore year you think about a guy who's got eight career double doubles he's second in the sec and rebounds and three double doubles just on this very season i think he's a future pro and for vanderbilt to compete he has to play well night in and night out fish this is just crazy that these two offenses are sitting here at nine to four not shooting it very well auburn is two of 13 from the field there's a three lined up off the back of the rim rebound to evans and now auburn oh for seven from behind the arc that one is perfect from jordan wright a 47 percent three-point shooter on the year well he had 18 points off of the bench uh started the last three games as you mentioned a little bit earlier dave he's really coming into his own stride and he has the confidence of his coach he is a terrific he does a terrific job of scoring without the coach having to set plays for [Applause] there's him double team on the baseline and thrown away right to evans how about that energy on the commodore sideline off the front of the rim from isaac mcbride he had a couple of threes against georgia on saturday good look and chris moore knocks it home first three of the game for auburn yeah nice job of al flanagan getting into the teeth of the defense you know al flanagan is an x factor for auburn similar to dylan de sue being an x factor for the commodores you talk about those point guard play but behind those two point guards are al flanagan for auburn and dylan to suit for the commodores [Applause] corner three on the way pushed up there by braley albert no good and auburn has a chance to cut into this five-point commodore lead is that the first shot clock we heard today i didn't think you could hear the entire game to be honest and that three is perfect that one was a good three or four feet from behind the arc as jamal johnson knocks it home he's been a 33 percent three-point shooter on the year that's number 37 for him this season yeah they're most consistent three-point shooter one of the more veteran players out of birmingham alabama the memphis transfers mr dependable for the auburn tigers here's right tough shot just threw it up off the rim hoping to sue might be able to grab that rebound not the case and then auburn comes right back a little ball fake and offensive foul that will go against chris moore and that will stop it at 11 14 to go here in the first half vanderbilt leading by two here at home they are so good so talented and i'm sure before this night's over there one of these two guys can have a really big night maybe both of them dave former auburn coach my coach cliff bella said you have to dribble pass and shoot in the game of basketball well these point guards can do all three of those extremely well you saw the penetration by cooper the pass and now the jump shot on the other side scottie pippen jr he is the exact same way if you want to grow up and be a good point guard like that earl the pearl spin you see his ability to penetrate but you also have to be able to pass look at him drop the dime off there and then when the defense backs off you got to be able to shoot the basketball that's not only for point guard play but to be a basketball player and we have two quality basketball players tonight scottie pippen second in the conference in scoring second and an assist would actually drop down a notch if sharif cooper had played enough games this is just game number 10 for sharif but he's averaging 20 points and almost nine assists a night what a start for him when you consider he had 26 in his debut tied for the most in a freshman debut in auburn basketball history how many did you have in your opener fish i don't know man i hope you didn't look it up because no i didn't i will now though i promise you yeah i'm wondering i'm wondering i'm wondering if it was if it's that good i think we lost my freshman opening game so that means i probably didn't do too well i'm sure our statistician ken dunlap will find that for me and relay that i'm talking about good point guard you're about to get fired yeah what if you had a team national tv brother why are you gonna do me like come on what if you had a good game see what if you had a good game well you know you always go what you got jamal johnson looks like he's trying to have a good yeah off the back of the rim auburn just two of nine from behind the arc actually two of ten after that miss this is such a young team it's not like vanderbilt's filled with experience themselves another block shot inside here's a run out from isaac mcbride the freshman out of little rock arkansas rebound to cooper bounce pass up ahead to johnson tried to throw it up to franklin but that was denied well between obena and clevon brown vanderbilt actually has pretty good realm protection this commodore team has been right there so many times cooper he'll be bumped on the floor by mcbride but what we've seen uh on both sides really a lot of blocked shots here early on well you look at cleveland brown there he sends a meet me at the rim message this is just a nice job of good timing no body contact on that play you're gonna see a lot of that on both sides as we mentioned even though these two teams have struggled two exciting teams to watch they like to get up and down and jamal jamal johnson's starting to heat up a little bit for the altman tigers yeah his second three-pointer and it gives auburn their first lead of the game at 13 to 12. some pressure from the tigers mcbride not afraid to throw it up rebound nicely done by braley albert softboy to los angeles grabs that rebound you look as this shot goes up here dave neal that looks like almost a little frustration not a frustration foul but williams looks to be upset with himself let's remember when you play at this arena memorial gymnasium that for young teams and auburn is the youngest team in the sec one of the youngest teams in the country this is the view for their bench right here and so for coach bruce pearl and their bench they're not on the sideline as they typically would be in any other gym uh in the sec but they're on the other end so for a young team when they're on offense in the first half you talked about a low scoring game it's extremely challenging you're really on your own in that first half i actually like that because i could take those shots and just say coach you know we [Laughter] shot clock to seven jordan wright trying to get a little too fancy to sue keep it alive they're going to say a foul that'll go against jordan wright but that freshman class for auburn what could have been missing one of the players that could have been a game changer that's uh off in the g league this year but look at that freshman class i mean certainly the future is bright when you start thinking about how much experience these guys are getting and the minutes they're playing well not only the future being bright but i think it's having a recruiting class that's top six in the nation really it really solidifies your brand right you you make those runs in the sec tournament the final four the ability to put together classes after that allows you to make additional runs and i think that's what coach bruce pearl is trying to do even though they're a team that's 10 and 10 right now and 4-7 in league play well a bad foul by vanderbilt's dj harvey he hits jamal johnson on a three-point attempt so he'll head to the free throw line 70 percent foul shooter 24 out of 34 on the year hey saturday on this sec network our full day of college hoops is capped off by this matchup texas a m will be down in florida at the o'connell center in gainesville to take on 22nd ranked florida 8 30 eastern time also available streaming live on the espn app and this you know those two teams want to get back on the floor they have been battling through some cobot issues and have had to have some games postponed so they're probably chomping at the bit to get back there this weekend two teams that really represented for the sec in the big 12 challenge right texas a m went and was able to steal a win at kansas state and florida had a nice win on the road as well at west virginia nice would be an understatement great win come on fish great don't just say nice not bad terrific sensation there you go is that better wow wasn't expecting this no sir i don't think either coach was either auburn cook and aleah boston lead number one south carolina against missouri 7 eastern 6th central then chelsea dungey and number 18 arkansas hosts rakia jackson and mississippi state both games right here on the sec network and of course always on the espn app inside memorial gymnasium bruce pearl and his auburn tigers leading it by four they're on a 12-0 run and you're looking at a guy that's got a few coach of the year awards uh hanging up in his office but let's talk about this season what you think so far we're about halfway through the conference slate right now break this down for me fish yeah i think if the season ended today it would be a three-man race coach konzo mart picked 10th and right now they are second in the sec and coach nate oates he's potentially national coach of the year the crimson tide picked fifth and uh just have one loss in league playing in coach mike white for the job that he's done losing pre-season sec player of the year keante johnson i think has been an outstanding job i think he'd have to go with nate oates at the season ending today but we've got half the season left so it's still a race dave neal is still a race yeah i don't think you'd go wrong with either one of those any of those choices that's for sure valid points on each and every one of those scottie pippen couldn't get that to go down and auburn off to the races back the other way and they're going to say auburn was out of bounds last actually last touched by albert so to belong to vanderbilt well you can see both teams are playing at a very high pace but i'm what i'm seeing are the officials really letting them play in this basketball game i mean we've seen four or five collisions where it hasn't been a call the officials are allowing the defense to keep that line of verticality where they jump straight up so you're gonna either have to play through some some contact or you're gonna have to settle for some jump shots on the offensive end that time they do blow the whistle as pippin junior was driving to the basket scotty pippen averaging 21 points a game over five assists a game he has played 14 games this year how about you know you start thinking he gets to the line a lot right this is his 74th free throw attempt of the year it just makes me scratch my head about sharif cooper right he's played nine games and he's already been to the free throw line 83 times yeah i mean i think his basketball iq is off the charts um the job that he's done his consistency right scored at least 15 points in 11 straight games that's the longest streak since john jenkins scored 19 straight back in 2011 and 12. so he is a staple of consistency boy nice pass there by cooper but auburn can't convert as cardwell misses the dunk but the tigers do retain possession i guess the ball never hit the iron it was his hands that hit the shot clock i'mma hit the iron so the shot clock didn't reset i don't know that auburn realized that but vanderbilt gets the basketball i've never seen anything like that before i mean the ball had to hit the iron it went straight up are you kidding me we've seen crazy things already here now how it worked out two teams that don't waste any time and putting the shot that one's off the mark now listen i've been avoiding it but i i think people would like to know because they're probably scratching their head any of these teams made any shot yes they have vanderbilt's 4 out of 20. auburn's 5 out of 23 both hovering around 20 i'm gonna leave it at that for a while until we get better there the sioux reverse layup yeah that was nice dylan to sue long athletic mobile this is not what you're gonna send to the basketball hall of fame great job by our crew as that one went sailing over everything how about that that's why they say officials get what is about 99 percent of the calls right and we always harp on that one percent right absolutely to sue nice strong spin move into the paint right past franklin hadn't really seen a change of defense here tonight right now look they're trapping the ball screen for sharif cooper to get it out of his hands a excellent pass williams just not ready for that ball there's nothing sharif cooper can do about that vanderbilt got off to an eight to nothing start in this game auburn had two points after four minutes of hoops took the lead briefly bandy just took it back and let's see what auburn does here cooper to the rim it'll belong to the tigers yeah too concerned about the defense that time just needed to take it up strong here's dylan desu nice jab absorbs the contact uses his size over franklin and if you watch he's trying to say he's too little watch after he makes this shot he puts his hand down just to say too little dylan de sous 6'9 he can say that against a lot of guys well cooper misses that three rebound by evans as we go to four and a half minutes to play here in the first half between these two teams auburn's missed eight of their last nine but that will be uh nothing but the bottom of the net for jamal johnson well that's the recipe for offensive success for the tigers tonight isn't it just get the basketball to jamal johnson three or five on the night nine of their 19 points offensive foul on pippin actually he's up to 12 of their 19. fish he has been a one-man offensive show auburn leads this by a couple kind of explains tonight right there don't do them like that a tight one as i glanced down right now at rupp arena shoot his first half takes guys you were talking about rest being right 99 percent of the time i'm just doing a little math these two teams have been right 24 percent of the time from the floor [Laughter] yeah and listen i'm not going to say that i was a mathematician in college by any stretch of the imagination but even i know that that's not what uh either one of these coaches want to see when they look at the stat sheet fish you know it's 19-7 from 2 17 from two offenses that have historically been really good under these coaches why has this been such a nightmare start i mean if i'm if i'm an auburn fan or a vanderbilt fan i'm saying what are you guys complaining about you said they need to work on their defense and defensively both teams are doing a solid job the truth of the matter is sometimes you're just not making shots and for these two teams they haven't had bad looks they're just not making shots today uh i i know that that will change as the game goes on uh maybe in the second half when auburn's on their own end but they're actually two really similar teams neither team has a true back to the basket guy so everything they get is either screens or penetration and kick and usually leads to a dribble drive or three-point shot foul on the floor which gives me an opportunity just to refresh your memory your first career game was against uab as we take one more look at this [Music] you remember now don't it's all coming back to you now damian had nine points three rebounds one assist one block and one steal and play 26 minutes you hit three threes hey bad game that was tough that was tough uab was ready for us in that game myself and doc robinson had no idea what we were getting into [Laughter] was coach bartow still coaching the uab at that time or he already late 90s go back and look at that see what the uav blazers had some great teams they got a great coach right now coach andy kennedy i think their best start since the likes of coach bartow was there great for ak little up and under move that one's left short nice drive by sharief cooper offensive rebound ripped out of there by vanderbilt though and here comes evans the other way he's got thomas in the corner and the three is good so vanderbilt notches it up with that three-pointer from jordan wright his second of this game a guy that was really struggling after that 18-point kentucky outburst he went three or three from behind the arc against the cats but over the last six games was just one of eight from behind the arc but has two tonight off-balance shot and well that'll kind of typify what we've seen from the perimeter well listen when you move the basketball when you set screens and reverse signs of the floor good things happen and jordan wright on the receiving end on that play and he's feeling it right now you know he's he's confident his swagger and demeanor is that uh and i think both teams lead a little bit more that you see he's got a season average almost in the first half almost half of the commodore's points tonight that one slips through the cylinder auburn back out in front by two for auburn they're led by johnson's 12. that was thor's first basket of the game vanderbilt's led by wright who has eight on a couple of three pointers cooper tonight 0 for four from the field three rebounds and two assists two minutes to play first half right now for auburn dave you mentioned that cooper has been struggling the one thing about the auburn tigers is they're not going to stop playing their style of basketball so if you're the commodores right now you're really uncomfortable because they missed so many shots and you know auburn's going to make their run for the commodores though they equally can do that as well typically they're doing that when they're out in transition getting stops and penetrating and kicking here's an easy takeaway for desu big stepping into throw down pro stuff neither team quite breaking away in this basketball game well the sue got a gift on the turnover a moment ago and really give the six eight sophomore a good look like this you know what's going to happen yeah well you did a nice job you see how he lifted it up over top of sharif cooper nice smooth play you think about these two teams dave and what they've lost the last couple of years vanderbilt lost knee smith and saban lee you know and then on the other side when you think about auburn 11 players the last couple of years you got a guy like horace spencer playing overseas and malik dunbar jared harper with the knicks bryce brown on their g-league team as well jumo kiki there's been a lot that has been lost for good reasons because these coaches have gotten guys to the next level but when that happens as you're seeing even amongst the blue bloods sometimes that makes the next year hard in particular when you have a pandemic evans for three maxwell evans knocks on that three-pointer maxwell a little over 30 from behind the arc this year he's the guy that can get 30 on any given night dave neal and if he gets hot then that is good news for the commodores yeah had 29 and vanderbilt's lone win in conference play that was against south carolina a week ago where he hit five threes foul against auburn moving screen will give it to the commodores with 8.7 seconds to go well flannigan comes up and that's the correct call obviously if you're al flanagan there's nothing you can do about that and chris moore in the wrong place at the wrong time the sioux will give it right back to the tigers when he travels with it out on the perimeter with 2.8 seconds remaining that is eight turnovers for vanderbilt auburn's had 10 here in the first half offered a half a million dollars to go start playing professional basketball now um versus coming into college that's where our game has come to now the decision that players are making and now i think the ncaa and collegiate athletics are going to have to continue to evolve to be hospitable but yet keep amateurism amongst collegiate athletics as well two-tenths of a second went off the clock actually a good break for auburn to get closer to the basket you're talking about two clubs scoring over 73 points a game vandy at 73.7 auburn averaging 79.1 and yet we're sitting here at a 25-23 game looks like they took a tenth off of the clock and this is where it's tough for coach bruce pearl you hear him hollering but his team's down here on this end and that'll do it for the first half and one this year leading when leading at the half bruce pearl coaching up his point guard sharif cooper right there and then go under with the reverse and english beautiful job by those two players in the first half we will see more scoring in the second though the numbers right there not exactly pretty on either side and part of the reason that we sit here at 25 and 23 points respectively is because the two guys that certainly we highlighted uh throughout the first half just did not produce sharif cooper with one point and scottie pippen jr with five two guys averaging over 20 points a game and there are the numbers right there i mean if they put together their normal first half this is a much different scenario absolutely to sue with the take that won't go but dylan cardwell looked like he may have caught something like an elbow across the forehead the way he went down oh just head butted cleavon brown ouch wow that kind of night pippin jr converts that free throw and now it's to a five point advantage remember vanderbilt led this game eight to nothing to get us started and auburn stormed back they went on a 12-0 run took the lead vandal but fought back late in the first half to take the lead and there you go as sharif cooper finally gets the shot to fall his first field goal of the night we told you'd be better the second half already gotten off to a much better start offensively for both teams what i'm looking to see is if either team can try to establish their presence on the interior it's almost like when you're boxing neither one of these teams have been able to get head shots so the body blows are getting to the basket getting to the free throw line which will soften up that defense a little bit in regards to jump shots like that and cooper just fouled pippin jr as the shot clock was winding down on a three-pointer well this is what you see way too often and you can see cooper tried to jump to the left but still caught a piece of scottie pippen jr and it's a nice break for the commodores and if you're vanderbilt you're hoping that this can get scotty people junior get you know maybe get him going a little bit offensively [Applause] or pippin missed some free throws at georgia the other night but normally a good free throw shooter on the year at 81 79 of 97. [Music] [Applause] 29 26 commodores spin move into pain from alan flanagan nothing to show for it looks like coach bruce pearl is going to get on these officials a little bit heavier in the second half we talked about a lot of contact being let go in the first half and if you're al flanagan al flanagan is a silent assassin for auburn he does a great job defensively getting out into the passing lanes and when you had justin powell and sharif cooper that were actually out al flanagan really had to play out of position he could play some point guard he's still playing some backup point guard now but he wasn't expected to have to have so much of the ball handling duties without having quite a bit of help but with his size and frame he's a guy that you will see at the next level it's just a matter of time in which he's able to get there at 6-6 215 pounds another shocking stat is that's flanagan's first point of the game averaging over 14 a night for auburn levon brown thought about it takes it right to the rack nice touch clevon brown his first basket and right back auburn comes emphatically with a throw down that's more about what i expected to see from these two teams let's see if they get more of an offensive flow and a better pace in the second half cambridge first points of the game on that vicious dunk sharif cooper one of the best in the game at drawing a defender and throwing lives with either hand his vision is precise and consistent i don't think that was a foul i think it was just kicked out of bounds bruce pearl thought it was definitely a foul another alley-oop alan flanagan getting up high throwing it down well looks like what we talked about is now beginning to come to fruition auburn the very young team one of the youngest teams not the youngest team in college basketball is now on the end with their coaching staff with their bench a little bit more communication and confidence versus the first half they were a little bit more disoriented let's go back to that last dunk by auburn off a cooper pass yeah we saw a couple of lives just a set play evans lost uh really just he and dylan de sue didn't communicate good between one another and vanderbilt likes to switch but when you switch it has to be constant communication and there was not on that defensive play cooper cardwell back to cooper nice double team that time by vanderbilt great job and it's what i expect to see more as the season goes on against sharif cooper he's so dynamic with the basketball but as dynamic as he is he's still 6-1 180 pounds and so one of the reasons why arkansas was able to come back after being down double digits at home against auburn was coach eric musselman made a nice decision to double team sharif cooper and get the basketball out of his hands coach stackhouse does it on that play and it rewards the defense of the commodores tied at 31. here's pippin he is bumped away from the basket no shot it will be on the floor so says brian o'connell scotty pippen jr the sophomore los angeles california had 12 points on saturday against georgia just 3-12 from the field [Music] so dave there's multiple ways in which you can break down that team both of these teams are using the dribble drive alabama does that as well missouri a little different they like to use jeremiah tillman back to the basket and the dribble drive foul against the tigers as jordan wright was going back uh but auburn with some fireworks here in the second half it's that memorial gymnasium fish yeah alley-oop passes are guaranteed when you have the auburn tigers and a nice job of sharief cooper looking up to alan flanagan [Applause] o'connell center to take on 22nd ranked florida 8 30 eastern 7 30 central two teams dying to get back on that floor they have been out for a while fighting covet issues uh some games postponed this week in the southeastern conference matter of fact georgia and tennessee two teams that didn't get to play their midweek game because of issues with the gators and the aggies they will meet tomorrow night in a match-up put together in the last couple of days gotta be flexible don't you fish no doubt well those are two teams right there that you can almost know what's going to happen if you see the score in the high 70s low 80s then you have to go with the gators and see the score closer to the 60s then you have to lean towards the aggies that's just different in style the aggies try to shorten the game and coach mike white in the florida gators have increased their pace substantially and i love the difference in the way that the florida gators are playing good guard play and two good bigs with omar payne and colin castleton and here is the youngster jordan wright the freshman out of baton rouge stepping to the free throw line coming off a game he had 12 against the bulldogs in athens 80 percent foul shooter on the year and he gets them both to go down now vanderbilt back out in front by a couple [Applause] nowhere to go for flan again and just threw it right into a white jersey and here's maxwell evans yeah coach bruce pearl was hollering for a foul if you're alan flanagan you just have to be strong with the basketball and play through it uh the commodore is playing a matchup zone and on this end i like jordan wright going at jamal johnson that's that nba background coach stackhouse just trying to go to a mismatch we talked about jordan wright he's 226 pounds so he's got about 30 pounds on jamal johnson and just used that big body to back him down into the post jerry stackhouse 18 years in the nba two-time all-star was the 1995 national college player of the year and ended up being the third overall pick back in 1995. off to mark tapped around one there by cardwell keeps it alive for flanagan that won't go bruce pearl begging for a foul a couple of tigers still late getting back down the floor clevon brown left hand off the window and this is what i expect to see more of by both teams see if you can get one of your big guys both teams really playing four out one in see if you can get one of those big guys established on the interior tyria whether that's clevon brown for the commodores or dylan cartwell right there he was inside for all that's better with that three-point shot though cambridge knocks home that three 27 percent on the year but he has launched now a hundred of those this season knocking down 27 of those tough shot from isaac mcbride the freshman out of little rock initially went to kansas before finding his way to vanderbilt and then auburn answers right back with yet another three off the hands of jamal johnson that'll be his fourth three tonight yeah he's feeling it right now so for auburn you've got to find a way to continue to get plays where you can isolate jamal johnson to get him better looks at that three-point shot levon brown too strong thor might have gotten a piece of that and here comes auburn the other way with flanagan oh nice step back can't convert it'll belong to the tigers alan flanagan doing exactly what you would expect after you've been able to hit a couple of those body blows which is him trying to get past the defender and put the defense at a disadvantage he now has the defense on his heels as you said just not able to convert three points 11 points under his season [Applause] average cambridge again [Applause] devin cambridge like a lot of the players for auburn he's a streaky shooter and when he gets hot when jamal johnson gets hot they usually come in waves [Applause] and a foul on the perimeter nice no-look pass by alan flanagan and it seems like dave that auburn's getting a little bit more comfortable shooting the basketball as the commodores have settled back into that match-up zone i don't know how much longer i would stay in the match-up zone if i'm coach jerry stackhouse now at times they can get hot and shoot their way out of it just as quick as they shoot their way into it he's going based on percentages right now [Applause] devin playing back in his hometown right here in nashville went to hillcrest prep big night for him and he's produced with a couple of three pointers well this is what we call not giving up on the play allen flannigan that time he just doesn't quit a lot of guys would be comfortable and stay behind your offensive player alan flanagan fought to get in front and get position and because dylan de sue was using that off right hand the officials call the foul on him flanagan in traffic a whistle on the way up that'll get him to the free throw line albert has reclaimed this two-point lead and flanagan 77 foul shooter will step to the line this is so important for young players to understand we talked about two teams that have struggled in particularly alan flanagan who's one of six on the night but he averages 14 points a game for a reason when you're struggling to score baskets get to the free throw line and you see his jump only three points a game last year playing behind the likes of isaac ocoro but 14 points per game this year and getting to the free throw line as part of that recipe fuller almost got a steal there off dylan to sue instead mcbride will get it too to sue here's evans d.j harvey transfer from notre dame back to harvey shot clock at seven offensive foul they'll call that on dj harvey tigers will have the basketball when we come back our under 12 media time out here in nashville our crew chief tonight of our officiating crew consisting of kb burdette brian o'connell not sure what they are looking at didn't see anything as we went to break little elbow shut up to the chest i mean maybe that's what they're looking at we have no idea uh at this point but i mean just looking at that replay checking to see if there was something beyond a normal offensive foul nothing look egregious from what i saw [Applause] it looked like that's what anthony jordan was telling steven pearl the son of coach bruce pearl that it was nothing more than an offensive foul and right now we've almost duplicated the amount of points that we had in the entire first half dave i'm a man of my words we'd have more points [Applause] 41-38 we were sitting at 25-23 at the half between two relatively high scoring teams and you see that coach jerry stackhouse has now went back to man with auburn having success while the commodores were in that matchup zone and they get a stop immediately here's mcbride he'll run the point that'll get pippin jr off the ball scotty coming off a couple of screens trying to get open now he has it shot clock down to seven this is the switch that they wanted shot by scott he couldn't get it to go long rebound to flanagan excellent defense by jt thor [Applause] three off to mark from moore and a foul on the floor against pippen junior i believe it'll stay with auburn so dave what you're noticing offensively on this end while sharif cooper is not in the game the ball didn't get past the three-point line and the reason i'm saying that is because when sharif cooper's not in the game auburn's going to have to evaluate how they put the defense at a disadvantage alan flanagan is typically much taller as you see sharif cooper come back in the game i think they should use alan flanagan when he's at the point guard position to post up much more to put the defense at a disadvantage and run their offense through him like that because most of the time alan flanagan when he's at the point he's going to have smaller guards and it's much more challenging for him to get by those guards pippin jr just picked up his third foul of the game tapped around a couple of times auburn will have another crack at it johnson off the window won't go good battle by the commodores long rebound flan again beautiful outstanding job of getting out into the open break and simply beating the commodores back defensively auburn by five largest lead has been five a couple of times here tonight to sue that is well shot but how about the sue making the catch and putting it in now how did he get that right he was matched up against sharif cooper when you have switches in the game of basketball a lot of times that advantage or disadvantage doesn't take place immediately but dylan desu was persistent and the offensive glass paid dividends for vanderbilt thor gets it to cooper saree four points tonight five assists long three from johnson and he got it yeah that's when you're sizzling hot that's hotter than the microwave the microwave doesn't get that hot day that's the old school oven he's on broil right now the team leader and sixth in the conference came in with 36 three-pointers he's now up to 41. that one is in and out from trey thomas but jalen johnson five of eight from behind the arc excuse me jamal johnson yeah jamal johnson is one of the more veteran guys on this auburn team the memphis transfer plays with such poise his demeanor is always the same you know what you're going to get from him and that type of stability is what auburn's going to need down the stretch in league play in order to try to win some of these close games and where they've been coming up short obina knocks home that free throw right back in the game need to correct myself i said it a couple times tonight because i didn't look down at my notes and i should know better but jordan wright is a sophomore not a freshman commodore fans know day it's okay you make mistakes sometimes missed shots officials miss calls players make turnovers not the end of the world right that's right [Laughter] there's dylan on that glass his length is what continues to be advantageous to him he seems to always have an advantage whether he's at the four two three whatever position here's pip in the other way the three-point auburn league ray thomas finds to sue right trying to post up on cooper he likes this matchup and he's quickly surrounded by three blue jerseys still got the shot off but flanagan grabs the rebound [Applause] here's pippin wright picks it up takes it himself lays it up and in beautiful job [Applause] good effort from franklin he's fouled and he'll head to the free-throw line javon franklin the 6-7 220 pound little rock arkansas native showing a little toughness a little grip undersized but not under man that's what you do to me way too much but i take it i take it part of the game right well six nine you see fourth double double of the season ninth uh career double double this young man is he's really indicative of what coach jerry stackhouse is trying to do while he slowly builds this program in the right way the challenge is a guy like dylan who gets too good and you end up losing him like you did aaron nee smith and saving lee and so he's just trying to put multiple classes together so they can do like every other program in the sec that's made this huge turnaround and be able to get a productive season together he's been averaging about 17 a game over the last six so his offensive numbers have increased here midway through the sec conference slate not much of a non-conference slate for this vanderbilt team they've had eight games either canceled or postponed this year oh wright was trying to get to sue but the suit went up for the rebound [Applause] yeah i never had to worry about that if i went up i was shooting today just miscommunication you hadn't given jordan wright credit he's being unselfish right that's it but still that was a shot though right take it sean he's been rolling tonight too cooper how about that oh and clevon brown i don't know what got him i don't know if a leg got kicked up and caught him in the midsection or not but brown went down the moment after cooper shot the basketball well looks like he got hit before cooper got the shot off from the looks of things that is not the place you want to get hit no not at all here's thomas now to right pippen junior nine points looking for somebody a crease or something and a big collision wow well first of all scottie pippen jr is great with the basketball but you've got to make a call there right how is that not something right something looks like a few of the plays we saw in the super bowl the other night can't do that to chief fans they don't want you to bring it up now mr brady hey mr big stuff got to give credit where credit's due so good it's hard for me to say that as an atlanta falcon fan but he's so good well if you didn't say it on the first six rings you gotta say it on the seventh get that man it took seven super bowls but he's okay i'm going to say it now he's an okay quarterback what a treat to be able to watch him perform tom brady is he coming back for number eight that's the question oh yeah oh he'll be back well coming up next the sec now team they'll have a complete breakdown of tonight's games as well as interviews with the coaches players it's all coming up following our game right here on the sec network you will join pat dary talk about alabama's big win on the road arkansas gets a win against kentucky kentucky shoots it well tonight but they just can't seem to catch a break it has been a tough tough year for the cats to say the least yeah and i think it's as much about the league being much better than people realize that it is about the catch yes the kentucky's having a down year and struggled in non-conference play but a team like arkansas with their depth and their length are going to be a tough out in march madness thomas knocks home that three-pointer for thomas his first field goal of the game 53-48 tigers [Applause] it's a it's it's a weird week those that follow the game and and you know pay attention to the top 25 rankings knows that that this week is one of the strangest in a long time when you think duke kansas kentucky north carolina and ucla are all out of the ap poll for the first time at the same time since 1961 and you know you're back a couple of years right north carolina lost to this albert team and the sweet 16 on that great run by auburn since that game look what the tar heels have done just two games over 500. sure well i think this pandemic has put the one and done error in question for a lot of blue bloods in particular you think about kansas i think they're 12 and seven or 12 and eight dukes seven and eight i think north carolina 12 and six kentucky now five and 13 in ucla 13 and four and a lot of those teams struggling to get into the tournament all it takes is one mediocre recruiting class for those one-and-dones to fail you i think more teams are going to try to be like gonzaga and put more recruiting classes together see on your screen a really good game coming up at 4 eastern on espn2 arkansas and missouri will go at it a blocking foul against is that pippin jr i believe as cooper was going to the basket and he'll head to the free throw line and that's number four on scotty yeah we talked about these two point guards and that was one of those calls that could have went either way you have to applaud uh scottie pippen jr for trying to get in there and give up his body scotty's played 24 minutes tonight well below his average still 12 points four rebounds only one assist though meanwhile cooper knocks home that free throw cooper with 13. six assists three rebounds by the way just got an update they were late getting that to us that was actually number five on scotty pippen jr so pippin is uh done for the night with those 12 points and played just as we said 24 minutes yeah what a tough break for scottie pippen jr what it does is it gives you an idea of what it's like in the southeastern conference and in college basketball and in general as you go through the season and in particular in conference play the better numbers you put up the more these coaches are looking at how to stop you and the best way to stop someone offensively is to make them guard and try to get them out of the basketball game via foul trouble that's the third time pippin has fouled out of a game this year [Applause] brown doing a nice job at the rim this entire night multiple blocks and that type of rim protection is something that vanderbilt needs seven point auburn lead tigers have got their shooting percentage up over 33 percent vanderbilt shooting 41 percent but yet trails here's right step back no good tapped around a couple of times to flanagan flanagan he traveled with it turnover number 15 for the tigers tonight but they lead by seven are under four timeouts back after [Music] this well dave you look at scottie pippen jr trying to get inside uh outstanding job by javon franklin just you talk about the length of auburn they really made their presence felt in particular with scottie pippen jr trying to make him finish oversize versus helping and i think that's what more teams are going to do against these point guards see if they can finish at the rim consistently four blocks for auburn tonight seven blocks for vanderbilt to sue spins nice shot dylan de sue cuts it back to a five-point auburn lead oh vanderbilt's very much still right here within striking distance if they're going to win this game dylan de sue is the man who's going to have to get it done thomas has his hands full trying to defend sharif cooper remember now dylan de sue is six nine and they've thrown multiple defenders we've seen franklin on them we've seen jt thor who has more signs that time it was jalen williams in the second half sharif cooper has put together 14 points in the second half with three assists in 11 minutes of action after a very quiet first 20 minutes and i think some of that is what we talked about at the outset dave just the different arena not being able to see coach pearl you know the point guard and the head coach are the most important connections in the game of basketball just like a quarterback but you see a nice finish by dylan desuit he's in his bag right now but that change in the second half is what i've seen uh for auburn and sharif cooper nice shift by jordan wright we'll try to complete this three-point opportunity he's sitting on 16 points and 10 rebounds just a second attempt on the way he's over one the other thing auburn's done well at least uh toward the end of the first half and here into the second half they've gotten to the free-throw line a lot this is a team that kind of uh their success relies on quite a few free throw attempts and they are now 15 out of 19 at the line for auburn meanwhile vanderbilt sitting there at 10 out of 20. corner 3 on the way no good and the tap in is good from jalen williams jalen williams you know he's under size at times because he he's really playing the five position in this lineup but his speed is what he can continue to use against opponents thomas fires top of the key way off the mark thor the rebound two and a half to go traveling violation we'll give it right back to vanderbilt flanigan's had a couple of traveling violations here in the second half yeah really nothing they could do on that pass he was trying to catch it and keep from going out of bounds it was the right idea auburn leading it by seven vanderbilt with 30 points in the paint many of those from dylan desu and you see albert has certainly gotten better from behind the arc they've now knocked down nine right around their season average per game to sue with a double double and jamal johnson have a heck of a game with 19 points with five three-pointers yeah this time of the year dave is when you really expect veterans to step up now if your most talented players or younger players and that's what's going to happen for you as well and that's the case with the commodores and dylan desu with scottie pippen jr out of the basketball game look for dylan to sue jordan wright and maxwell evans to step up down the stretch right is fouled as he takes it into the lane other than a three-point shot this is the best play that could have happened for the van to build commodores you get a chance to stop the clock try to claw your way back into the basketball game if you can make these two free throws then you knock it down to a five point deficit and you get a chance to set your defense jordan right though misfires on that free throw he's 80 at the line this year mcbride will check in now remember scotty pippen jr has fouled out of this one for vanderbilt with 12 points so the sophomore that's right the sophomore jordan wright can't get both of them but gets one of them very rarely do you make mistakes partner we understand very rare gonna be eaten at me for a while cleaned it up though speaking of cleaning it up that one bounces around and right through the disposal for the auburn tigers auburn with a chance to stretch this out to double figures for the first time tonight if they can get a basket here cooper alley-oop underneath no whistle bruce pearl thought there was a bump on that now evans back the other way [Music] and wright travels with the basketball well you don't have an arena full of fans but we could definitely hear travel all the way here in atlanta georgia before anthony jordan called and you can tell now sharif cooper at that point guard realizing that the clock is an ally just trying to slow it down make sure they don't turn it over and you see the bench points 27-6 for the auburn tigers tonight most of those coming obviously from the job that jamal johnson has done cooper give him the bucket and now the lead is double figures at 67-56 under a minute to go lays it up and in it'll belong to vanderbilt the turnover on the baseline will give the commodores a chance here with 43.7 seconds to play it's amazing how many plays you see like this down the stretch i'm wondering if they'll take a look at this yeah two minutes that was close it was hard to tell on that first look at the replay [Music] and i think that's exactly what anthony jordan is going to do make that first they decide to give it to vanderbilt it didn't take long and the commodores make him pay maxwell evans makes it a six point game and a quick foul right this game really interesting did to dave neal while we were looking to see who it went out on jerry stackhouse drew up a terrific play to get maxwell evans open from that corner three and now it is a two possession game with plenty of time left to go huge free throws by the sophomore alan flanagan auburn as a team shooting 69 percent at the free throw line flanagan 77 percent on the year stretches it back out to eight here's evans mcbride fires buries it and a quick foul at mid-court on cooper now to get him back to the free-throw line cooper up over 80 percent as a free-throw shooter and tonight he's eight out of nine at the free-throw line yeah the charity stripe has been kind for the auburn tigers tonight and in order to close this game out they're going to continue to need it to be kind be honest day 23-25 in the first half did you think you'd see this 70-64 score i did not think that we'd see a seven on the board but we have auburn offensively so much better here in the second half three balls started going down got to the free-throw line as cleveland brown couldn't get that to drop and we're now under 15 seconds to play as desu will foul flanagan so jamal johnson with a big game with 19. is our zaxby's player of the game he hit five three-pointers he is their team leader and the sixth of the conference now with 41 three-pointers made this season already graduated in the fall school of communications think about that run that auburn made he was a part of it right now he is a critical part of auburn's victory couldn't have got this one done without it woman brides had a couple of threes drop here late but only six seconds remaining here's cooper and auburn will run this thing out and they will snap their three-game losing streak and they will extend their winning streak against vanderbilt to four games so bruce pearl and company make the trip up to nashville and walk out with a victory 73-67
