(uplifting music) - Hi, I'm Kimberly with
the Fat Quarter Shop, and I'm here today with a free
pattern called "Vibrations". It's part of our AGF Stitch series. To make this quilt to start, you start with 10 half yards, two yards of a light background and two yards of a contrasting background. You also will be using the Cat's Cradle XL
Ruler by Creative Grids, and seven-inch finished
triangles-on-a-roll triangle paper. And on this quilt, I decided to use gray Aurifil color 2600 so that my thread wouldn't
show when I'm piecing. And download the free
pattern at the link below and let's get started. The first step in this quilt is to make half-square triangles. And I always use them using
triangles-on-a-roll paper, so that's how I'm gonna show you today. You're gonna take a fabric
A and fabric C rectangle, put them right sides together. From your roll, you're
gonna cut two squares off. So I've got that already done, and I'm gonna put that right on the paper. And I do like to use a
lot of pins in this step, so that this becomes accurate. They're so big that I just want this to stay flat when I get to my sewing machine. I'm gonna keep my pins away from any of the lines on the paper, 'cause that's where
we're gonna be cutting. So super easy. So this is what you do first. Then you're going to
stitch on the dotted lines with a really thin 1.5 stitch. That's gonna make
tearing the paper easier. And this is how it will look. So you can see my stitches. And then we're gonna trim. We're gonna trim this down. And cutting this paper is really easy, and you want to make sure you
cut directly on the lines, and that way, your triangles
will come out really accurate. So I usually start with
one of the two sides, and then do the other two sides. And then I'm gonna cut my squares apart, and then I'm gonna cut on
the solid line in between. And then, to pull your paper off, you will crease it and then
it will just pull right off. And then you're going to press, and you are going to make 32
of these half-square triangles. Now on this quilt, we have decided to press all of the seams open, so that it lies together really nice. So you're gonna have 32 of these. You're gonna put two of those together. And when I'm doing this, I'm gonna use pins, use a couple pins, and I am going to make sure
this intersection is pinned, so that you can make sure the
navy is lined up with the navy and the cream is with the cream. Put a pin there, so that when you sew it's gonna be really nice and accurate. And this is how your
top diamond will look, and you are gonna make 15 of these. Two of the half-square triangles we've made in the previous
step, we're not gonna be using. Let's move to the next step. Now this step is a lot easier. You're gonna take a fabric F square and a fabric E rectangle, put them together and
stitch a quarter inch seam. It's gonna look like this,
and you're gonna make 60. Then you're gonna take another one with all different fabrics and make sure the
intersections don't line up, stitch a quarter inch seam, and you're gonna make 30 of these. Now we're gonna have fun
using the Creative Grids Cat's Cradle XL Ruler. You're gonna take a fabric D rectangle and the unit you just made, and just put 'em right sides together. Then you're gonna take
your Cat's Cradle Ruler, and there are two notes that
say "Place on seam line". So you're just gonna place it there. And when we pressed open, it
made it super easy to see that. I'm gonna use a friction pen, it will disappear with heat later, and I'm gonna just draw a line. I'm gonna do that on the other side also. So again, "Place on seam line", and we're gonna draw that line. And then I will put two pins and go to my sewing machine, and we're gonna stitch
directly on those two lines. It will look just like this, so you can see my stitched lines. From here, we're gonna trim a quarter inch away from
each of those lines. Because that intersection in the middle is a little bit wider than a quarter inch. So I'm gonna trim there, and I'm gonna trim here. And then we're just gonna throw this little sliver of fabric away, you're gonna open those up, and you are gonna have 30
of these Cat's Cradle units, and we're gonna trim them down. I'm taking a Creative Grids
seven and a half inch ruler, it's CGR7, and I'm just gonna place the solid line, this white line right on my corner. And then you can just trim this down and we're gonna have 30 of our blocks. And we're gonna move to the next step. So you're gonna have 30 of these units that use your fabric D background. Then you're going to do the
same thing with your fabric, and you're gonna have 30 of these. Now you're gonna take two
of the Cat's Cradle units that have the darker background, put them together where it forms a V, stitch a quarter inch away, and that is going to give
you 15 of these dark units. And you're gonna do the same
thing with the background, and you are gonna make
15 of these light units. And if you have gotten this
far, you can totally do it. We've only got a few more
steps and they're super easy. Now, this is super simple. You're gonna take eight fabric G squares and we're just gonna sew those together, and it is going to give you an eight-patch unit that
looks just like this. We're gonna make 15 of those, and now we're ready to build our block. Now, all you have to do
is take your four units and piece them into a block. And this is your lovely block, you're gonna make 15 of these. And I am sending good vibrations to you to get this quilt done. Just tackle it in small steps
and you can totally do it. And I wanna give a big shout-out to Peach who inspired us to do this quilt. And I would love for all of you to subscribe to our YouTube channel. See you next time. (uplifting music) (film rolling) (scissors snipping)
