spending your Tuesday with us we enjoy it and we're so glad you can be here as you can see we've got a little bit different quilt behind us so we've got some fun things in store today let's check we almost got a hundred people on our YouTube stream right now one from sunny Cal yet Chile Southern California it's very chilly here it's it's quite brisk here Ontario Canada oh there's a Pippa from the UK I absolutely love the name Pippa so thank you for joining us it's awesome you got Pennsylvania Indiana here they come Ohio someone's asking if we have gift cards for sale we do you can get gift cards on our website Iowa City Tammy from Arizona awesome Linda from Springfield in Missouri she's just down the road not too far from us here Kathy from Spain Madi awesome we we like where's Twitter there we jinx yeah that's right awesome bergenia North Carolina Oh everybody's doing welcome welcome somebody has big huge beautiful snowflakes in Kalamazoo jealous Mary that sounds lovely if it's gonna be cold I want it to snow and we do not have any snow right now it's just cold so yeah this is like a mega bonus if you look behind her I know she already said this but yeah look at this quilt isn't it so cute I just finished it just literally finished the binding this morning you know nothing like down to the wire yeah as soon as I saw this beautiful ombre bloom jelly roll from v & Co for Mota I was like I think this needs to be a Reuben star quilt and so I have been planning it for quite some time and I wanted to share it with you guys today so that's what this is this is our ribbon star pattern I made mine a little bit smaller just one row shorter than Jenni's pattern just because I wanted it to be square but fun fact about being Co we went Vanessa yeah Vanessa was our first like guest we actually went to her house yeah shot a little tutorial with her it was like the first like guest thing that Missouri stars ever done yeah and we love her she's amazing and talented and she has so many different beautiful ombre fabrics you can get them in fat quarter bundles and yardage or in these jelly roll strips and they really are suited to those pre cuts just because you want to see the full gradient which we probably should open this up and show them or one of these yeah okay the coolest thing is is like you get so many you know you make the stars with the same strips but you get so many you get so many different colors so let me show you here on one of these fat quarters because you'll be able to easily have this we have so many I love the quilt oh thank you guys but you can see so this is essentially half of you know your fold and so you can see how it goes from dark to light and then if you had the whole width of fabric it would go back to dark again so you get this amazing ombre effect and this like I said is the ombre bloom so it has these cute little flowers on it so so darling and I just had to make something with it so let me show you what you're gonna need to make this quilt so it is all done using two and a half inch strips and squares so the first thing you're going to do is like do you know exactly how many jelly roll strips you used are oh so I used so if in the pattern it calls for one roll of print strips and one roll of white strips for the the entire roll if you're gonna make the full pattern which like I said is four by five I just made mine four by four so if you have a role of each that's what you're gonna need to make a quilt similar to the one that you see behind me the only difference between my besides the row is I didn't add an extra outside border I just added this little border with the corner stones and then I did one more plain white border because I just wanted the Stars to be the main focal point I decided not to do a border on mine and Ginny's pattern has a border on her so that's really the only difference so you need a roll of each but I'm gonna break it down and show you exactly what you need for each block and then you can decide how big you want to make your quilt from there because I also have a little surprise that came to me in the middle of the night that I'll show you in a minute yes she waited till last minute but she still didn't even stop sewing then no I didn't the lives coming I get a little carried away sometimes so what you're going to need is you're going to cut from your white strip you're going to need for each block remember this is our block this whole star unit you're going to need for two and a half by four and a half inch strips so that's what I've got here so we're gonna cut those and then you're also going to need let me make sure I've got all those into the middle of it get a good top game so yeah two and a half by four and a half and then you need let me make sure I tell you correctly twelve two and a half by two and a half inch squares and that's to do these little corner stones and this corner here so each quadrant needs three so that means we need twelve total and that's what those are your cuts from your background fabric and then you're going to need four two and a half inch squares of your print fabric for two and a half by four and a half inch strips of your print fabric and four six and a half by two and a half inch strips okay hopefully that made sense now the easiest way for me to make this quilt was to chain piece everything and so I'll show you exactly how I did it the first thing that I did is I took my print my for print two-and-a-half inch squares and I grabbed four of my background two and a half inch squares and we're just going to sew those right sides together on one side with a quarter inch seam so that's our first step so that this someone is asking about pretty well bobbins and I know you yes yelling at me about this two days ago okay so what's the question which ones do you use oh well why so we only as far as I know carry one brand of pre-round bobbins here at Missouri star so those are the ones that I use I just go and get them but there's there's different sizes so depending on your machine so like for this machine let me see if I have one here let me see if I can show you the difference okay hopefully this will be you'll be able to see so for this machine it requires this thicker bobbin and for my machine I have at home it's a little bit narrower can you guys see that okay you see that see how this is just not quite as tall it's a narrower bobbin and this one's a little bit taller and so it just depends on the machine and so I use this narrower size at home and here at work I have these taller bobbins that I use because she has the Jane at home and then this is a jubilant at home I mean it work so that's the difference on those so that's a good question though but they're awesome and if you are wondering why we prefer the pre one bobbins because they're wound so tightly they're round by you know a machine that is made to do just that they go forever so you can stitch so much longer it's like a little gift I just love them anyway back to what we're doing we've got our two and a half inch print squares and our two and a half inch background squares and we're just going to sew those right sides together using quarter-inch seen so I'm just gonna lay those just like so and I have gray thread in here just so you guys can see but I would probably use white if I was doing this at home and you can see these look slightly different colors because I've cut them from different places on a strip and that's just part of the fun of the hombre make sure you've got them lined up because as long as your seams stay nice and consistent this block comes together so nicely so Angela's asking if there's only two different sizes of pretty wild bobbins um I believe so I actually am Not sure I've only ever seen two and so I I am not sure if there's any other ones out there but these are the most common bammed sizes that I'm aware of at least working with the baby lock machines like we do so often okay so then we're gonna trim those and we're gonna cut these apart just trim our threads there and I'm going to take this over to the iron and we're just going to go ahead and press these back to the dark side so our seam is hidden in that darker side of fabric there we go is in it which I know isn't how the pattern does but like so just so those whole strips together oh that's true that's a great great tip okay and so we've got we've got those for ready the next thing we're gonna do is we're gonna go ahead and snowball our corners of our star legs so that we can get the points that we want and so the important thing to remember is that these need to go opposite directions and so I also want mine to be the same throughout the whole quilt so let's look at a block I've got here already done and you can see here's my short pieces here so I'm gonna make sure that when I sew it's gonna go this direction on my short pieces and it's gonna go this direction on my long ones so that they're opposites does that make sense alright so I'm going to take more of these and if you say yes for everyone yep perfect all right corner to corner opposite directions and if you want to press or draw a line on your white squares you can do that because you are just going to sew from point to point I've I've gotten pretty good at it after making this so I'm just gonna go ahead and take it to the machine just like so so I just I gotta bring this up because everybody's asking uh-huh everybody's like his mom retiring no and no no she's not she's on Friday so she's still every week yep but then we just wanted to bring you more creatures have so many things that just Friday's was just not enough so so then we get Tuesday's yeah so we're just going to put these in one after the other someday we'll overthrow a mom though no never don't listen to him all right you can see I'm just feeding these right in the machine someone's asking if you did this on your own like at home would you chain piece each piece or do you work block to block so I did a combination of both I did all of my cutting for the entire quilt before I sewed a single seam just because I did not want to have to stop in between and and make more cuts so I had all my cutting done which was a little tedious I'll be honest there's you're gonna need a lot of these two and a half inch squares but once it was done sitting down and sewing it I tried because I had a kind of a plan of how I wanted the colors to go together I tried to keep it a little bit organized and then work from block to block if that makes sense and so I basically did what I'm showing you here if you maybe didn't care about your colors that you put together quite so much and you were going for scrappy I would absolutely chain piece every single one of the pieces of that size if if you follow that's so I think it just depends on what you're what you're going for all right so there's our for two and a half by four and a half inch pieces and now I'm going to take my two and a half by six and a half inch pieces and remember we need these to go the opposite way so I know the tail of my piece needs to go this way now because the other side what's going the other way so then now I'm gonna line this up in here and just do the same thing and if you can I don't know if you can see here but I have my stack of my strips here and my stack of my squares right here so I can just stay right at the machine and just grab what I need so it makes it really efficient everyone is awesome we have a lot of fun around here copper it's like that uh you know what is that the Lego theme song alright here's my last strip I have kids and now you've got this beautiful chain that you've created not so fun we're just gonna cut all those apart and you have to hum when you're cutting apart yeah you have to hum and sing songs and you know do little dances to you because you're so excited so fun alright so now I have all of these and you're going to want to check and make sure when you fold it back that your piece is looks whole if it looks crazy wonky or something like that you're going to want to pick it out and sew it again because really the whole point of this is that your piece remains the original size so it should still be two and a half by four and a half after you snowball it but mine look really good so I'm just gonna take my ruler and I'm gonna trim off so I've got a quarter inch seam allowance here you can do this with scissors if you have a bunch it tends to be faster to just rotary cut them just make sure your cutting on the right side of that seam or you will be so sad and not on your finger and not on your finger that's right be safe there we go there's those ones and then opposite on this side such they forgot the name of the tape you use on your sewing machine that is called diagonal seam tape and if we I know we're running low on stock so if it if it happens to be out just add it to your wish list and then as soon as it's back in we will send you an email because it is the best all right there we go those are ready toss all my scraps and then we can take these and press them all back any questions on this block guys I mean girls and guys girls and guys everyone people all right listen people there's that one Lamberg said you need an assistant took up Rio I do forces me to do camera he is he is a lot of help a lot of help he's really good at cutting and oppressing many pieces out though that's not true teamwork alright so we've got these pressed and I'm gonna bring these back over here so now the next step is we're going to sew these um you know a little two patches I guess to our four and a half inch background strip and then we'll be able to really see our stars start to come together you can see here where this goes in our block we need our print or colored strip to be in that way so we're gonna fold these just like so and so right down this side and we want every single one to be the exact same so we had a good question come in they asked how many stars would be good size for a baby quote who a baby quilt you could do like six and then just put borders on it honestly you could even depending if you do a large enough order for would be great like this is a nice size and then if you add a little bit more of a border around that babies they're small babies they're small that's right oh I came on threaded hold on but that is a great question what my automatic he's on top of she's like hey four with borders BAM done alright there we go let's try that again remember just a quarter-inch seam just make sure you're all lined up and then once you're done sewing someone want to know the finished block size the finished block size is 12 inches after its oh yeah move the fat quarter bundle sorry get that out of the way hurry good point thank you that's a good call that was my bag you know what I mean let's be watching that okay I think people are asking about the iron I think the iron is sold out right now yes a while to have them made so I I mean I don't want to break hearts but it's not gonna be in before Christmas it was a limited release so they are gone for now but hopefully we'll be back alright so now we can cut these apart and then we'll press these back this is one of those blocks that it really is at least for me I found it to be important to press in between and not just rush and you know try and get away without pressing and it all laid so nice when I took the doesn't want to see me sewing but misty won't let me touch the sewing machine she forces me to just cut that's not press things you don't listen to him he is causing causing problems are so now we've got our squares and the next thing we want to do is we want to put our shorter star legs just like so we're going to attach them here see so on that side and sew it down and again it's the same in all four quadrants so I just kind of lay out my stuff exactly how I need it and then I can just pick up one let's just finish one card quadrant just one quadrant okay no one's getting bored it's just cause I'm trying to leave more time for questions okay well if they have questions I am happy to answer them along the way I feel like I just have to keep sewing I'm just gonna you know which block magazine this is in Mary anything Mary we'll find out also did we put a link for the Briand bobbins in the truck oh they're out of stock but put them on your wish list guys you guys are shopping shopping we keep running out of some of these goodies but we'll get him restocked so like you said add them to your wish list I still had all my fingertips yeah yes I do misty hasn't its toes go first so if you're losing a toe it because you're leaving your rotary blade open I thought because I didn't cut it at perfectly 5 inches ridiculous alright those gangers are sharper than you think block volume 3 issue one is what issue of block magazine this quilt is in hey you're awesome that was perfect she's a rock star oops one more set of strips it's the last one okay so they want you to pay close attention on how you do not lose your points oh okay yes I can talk about that but let's sew these on first so this is the longer star side this is the yep our longer star side this is the last piece for each quadrant you make four identical quadrants to create this block how long did it take you to make that quilt behind you I'm a couple days yeah but I didn't sew like all day obviously so we force her to do somewhere else yeah you did like how to retreat though for a day you said all day get a little retreat day and so they got about 8 hours straight of sowing which was very fun but there was like some laughing and chatting in there which may be made it a little less yeah just a smidge alright there's our last one okay then let's cut these apart give them a good press they look so good I just love this fabric too I think it's so happy cheerful they want to know what this is called the the fabric is called ombre bloom by V and Co for Mota it's not so cute and then you just lay it out like a four patch see because of my ombre that these two are a little bit darker than this one so I'm just gonna put them on opposite sides from each other and I just love how that comes out and then we're just going to sew these two together and these two together and we will have well that down towards you a little bit o like that and also they asked if this is part of the daily deal what is it this is the daily deal o block is part of the daily oh okay I was like what Mary how come you didn't tell me this oh okay sorry guys guys really I did for like two seconds but the the magazine that it is in is is part of the daily deal so check that out for sure that's awesome okay so there you see that is how our finished block comes together now I have a little surprise because I just woke up in the middle of the night and I said you know what this quilt okay okay old brothers okay so first of all you guys asked about how you make sure you don't lose your points so this is where your quarter inch seam is super super important if you are really consistent you can see here my quarter inch seam looks just right so as long as I follow my quarter inch I will be good when you're putting on your when you're attaching your sashing you didn't want to show on the block of hold won't hold your block up on that okay well they know what's going on so it goes right here here's your block and then I started and finished each row and in between each block I put a two and a half by 12 and a half because our unfinished measurement of the block is 12 and a half inches so right here is a two and a half by twelve and a half inch strip so I started and finished each row with that sashing strip and then in between my rows I put these corner stones and the same sized sashing strip corner stone same size sashing strip so you sewed the blocks in rows yep connect them with white sashing strips and then the rows together exactly and so if you see like you can see here where this fit in and so when you're sewing you move this one out of the way when you're attaching this is awkward all right it's always it's always a little interesting isn't it okay so you can see here for the most part my quarter inch seams look really good there's a couple on this block in particular where this is not a quarter inch this one looks pretty good this one not so much and so I would either take this back out and fix it flip it over what you really would do a little bit over and you just make sure you're on that side right that's what I was gonna say so if you look right here you can see Linda wants that close up yeah make sure you guys can see this you might need to you see this issac okay right here where the threads cross this side towards me is where your peak is so as long as when you're attaching your sashing you stay on this side of where those threads cross you're gonna keep your peak you're gonna keep your points so that's really the trick so even here I have enough to make sure even though that this is gonna be a little bit scant I'm just gonna watch and make sure I stay on this side of that point and then I'll keep my points in the quilt so that is what you're watching for you just don't want to go over where those threads cross all right it's time for the it's time for the magic so she's been so pumped up I was just like you know when you have one of those moments and you're just like this is so smart I think some people call us genius yeah Jenny calls it her like what if moments so I woke up this morning and I said what if we made it in Christmas colors and snowball dissenter and it becomes is this not the cutest thing you've ever seen ah yes yes the answer is yes it's so fun and so all I did this is the exact same pattern we just went through I made it in solids and then before I attached my quadrants here just like this I added a one and a half inch square of this yellow in the center to create the center of our flower and it's it comes together so great I'm so excited about it now I have to make a whole nother quilt but it's fine it's really great it was like contemplating trying to take that quilt down and I'm like no minutes anyway I just think it's so fun and now I I just keep thinking like you could add you know wider strips here and you have really fun Christmas placemats like there's so many options you could do with this you guys so please take it and run with it I would love to see what you make and Merry Christmas yeah seriously I mean that thing would be so cool for Christmas table runner or anything is so fun and it's all that we did is we added this one and a half inch square to the corner of each one of our quadrants sewed that on press it open before we attach them together and then you get this little little points at a block it's so so pretty I'm just so happy about it I love when an idea comes together you guys are awesome thank you so much for us spending your Tuesday with us we have one more live for the year we'll be back next week and then Willie will be back in 20 20 can you believe it so super fun we'll see you next Tuesday yep awesome thank you guys see it
