hi i'm matt and welcome to less dependent wisconsin as you can see it's kind of a rainy day today got about an inch of rain over the last 15 hours or so so what better opportunity to go take a look at the rain barrel system i have we i purchased these from home depot last october they pretty much sat around all winter but i've gotten some really good use out of them this spring so let's go show you how i've got them set up so there's the barrel itself now it's listed on the home depot website as unbranded but when i got that it came with a brochure saying it was made by upcycle products incorporated uh it's still listed on the website it's 79 that's what i paid for it take a look at some of the features okay uh the top has a screw-on lid it's got a very nice screen we've had a lot of seeds and stuff blown around so that's all the uh garbage that's kind of on the top but it does a really good job of filtering it's got a very fine screen there so that's the lid there's an overflow that you can connect a hose to and then run the overflow out into your yard if you do not put a hose on that overflow and leave the cap off you're gonna wind up getting a trench in the ground okay so get yourself uh these were 15 foot hoses they're relatively cheap okay there is a way to connect multiple barrels you can just link it up right here to another barrel that way if you only have one downspout you can to fill two barrels at the same time okay and then the output okay right now i've got it hooked up to a soaker hose it runs through my tomatoes and it works really well that soaker hose releases about a gallon of water an hour so with these 55 gallon barrels it does last a while but i just want to show you the flow rate here and the bear you so you can fill up jugs and do hand watering or you can connect it to the soaker hose but when the barrel is full it's got a pretty good flow rate as the barrel empties it's it slows down considerably okay now some changes i'm going to do is this winter i'm going to make some pedestals and actually raise this up a little higher the higher it sits the more easy the water will flow out to the rest of your garden and basically to do that i'm just gonna have to cut the gutter up a little higher move the downspout and it should work really well uh at the end of the season i will drain it and clean it out real good uh you do not want these full in the winter uh it'll crack and crack when it freezes and it'll avoid the warranty on it uh one other interesting little thing because this was upcycled products these were actually olive oil barrels you can see the greek writing here product of grease and they've just converted them into a rain water collection where i live we get about 30 inches of rain a year so considering i have four of these barrels i'm getting about 200 gallons of water every time it rains half an inch to three quarters of an inch so you figure that over the course of the summer i mean you're talking you know six thousand gallons so i am uh i have exclusively been watering the garden with that no city water um so i'm hoping that'll make a big difference in the plants you can see the tomatoes are kind of taken off right there but anyways i hope you like this video it's a good product definitely will make you less dependent on the city water supply that's for sure so anyways focus on being less dependent we'll see you soon have a great day
