UNSC Ships Should End Planets | Lore and Theory

basically every UNC ship in existence should be able to completely and utterly end a planet and the terrifying thing is that really isn't an exaggeration the law regarding the ships in the UNSC doesn't make a whole lot of sense yes I know you're already bracing yourself for another one of those kind of videos where I look at all of the ruthless inconsistencies regarding the law and how it just doesn't make a lot of sense in the grand scheme of things I've covered a few different kinds of topics surrounding the UNC ships before but today we're looking at quite a different kind of issue and it's the problem with UNC ships and their engines specifically in regard to their acceleration and their top speed I've tried to keep the calculations light on this one but nevertheless roll the [Music] intro [Music] hey everyone welcome back to installation 00 and UNC ships generally speaking move under nuclear fusion drives being the primary sublight propulsion systems used on these kinds of spacecraft not to be confused with the shaw fujikawa translate engine which is used for travel at Super luminal speeds through the 11 dimensions of slip space basically the Halo Universe is equivalent of a warp drive the primary drives make use of inertial electrostatic Fusion reactors which fuse dyum and helium into a stable and very abundant supply of superheated plasma this plasma is then Vector to the ship's engine cones via vectored Drive exhaust where it is then mixed with either hydrogen or water to add additional reaction mass that then provides propulsion for the ship and yes contrary to your expectations water wouldn't kind of put out the ship's engines this is plasma we're talking about it just basically convert the water directly from water to steam to a superheated gas plasma basically and adds additional Mass to the exhaust thereby providing the necessary thrust mechanics to move the proportionally massive UNC ships through space and this entire process is powered directly by the ship's nuclear fusion power plants and since the are basically fed a continuous stream of dyum and helium 3 and are efficiently cooled particularly in the case of the newer engines by an optical slurry of ions chilled to near absolute zero basically means these engines can produce continuous thrust and there in lies the issue these ships are traveling in space where there is very little of a medium around the ship to create any degree of drag or resistance so a ship under constant thrust and constant acceleration means that speeds become ridiculously fast ridiculously quickly constant acceleration under very very long periods of time even if the acceleration is very very very gradual we'll see an object reaching huge velocities this is exactly the function behind more recent developments in satellites and deep space probes using ion drives and even some concepts of ships using solar cils the ion thrusters create a very very steady stream of ions that eject from the side of the vessel and this creates a very very low impedance thrust that over time builds up and builds up and builds up to the point that it reaches escape velocity for our solar system and in the case of solar cells the energy and radiation from the Sun impacts the inner surface of the solar cell again generating tiny levels of thrust that over a long enough period of time builds and builds particularly when used with extremely high powerered lasers that could be put in orbit around Earth to a point where the vessel itself could reach notable fractions of the speed of light we're not talking about sci-fi right now this is things that we can actually test and if budget allows do right now and yet we have multi-million ton ships in the UNC that can seemingly EX cerate in near perpetuity now the interesting thing about space flight in the 26th century is that ships have actually made Journeys between planets within our solar system for example Earth and Mars as routine as air travel today it is worth noting however that the UNC at least in the 26th Century don't quite have the knowledge and understanding and Technology to develop slip space drives that are precise enough to allow intas system jumps this basically means means jumps between planets using a slip space Drive the Covenant on the other hand they most certainly do have that technology but Humanity don't so any travel done between planets within a solar system are done by the sublight engines the slip space engines are only really used to cover the immense astronomical distances between solar systems with the ship often dropping out of slip space at the edge of the solar system and then using its sublight thrusters to move further in so for trip such as for example the journey between Earth and Mars that journey is performed on a spaceship with sublight thrusters using exactly the kind of drives that we've already outlined here to move between the planets and with it being as routine as air travel in the modern era we can only assume that the velocities that can be achieved between planets are quite impressive cutting down the amount of time that will be required to go between plants at the moment our technology limits us to basically being a 9month round trip if we wanted to go from Earth to Mars and back again again we can only assume because there's never actually been any specific numbers put on it only that the convenience of being able to move between planets in a solar system is very very convenient on tandem with modern day air travel so I'm going to make some very very conservative estimates based on the velocities of these kinds of crafts now if a journey between say Earth and Mars is that convenient then even if it took say a week because of the immense distance between Earth and Mars being 225 million kilm or 140 million miles that means the average velocity of a human ship in this era must be on the order of around 372 km/s now although that sounds immensely fast there's actually evidence to suggests that it's significantly faster than that and I'll be honest with you it does seem at least in my own personal view a little bit slow given the advancement of over 500 years of technological achievement extremely sophisticated thrust technology and for context Apollo 11 got to the Moon in 3 days with an average velocity of 1.4 km/s so yes a jump from 1.4 km/ second for Apollo 11 and 372 km second for a UNC ship is pretty huge but again given the 500 years of advancement a completely different thrust method and the tonnage involved I'd say it's actually pretty modest but for the avoidance of Doubt let's use in Universe context the marathon Cruiser passing by the Cairo station Bridge during Halo 2 it travels its own length in 6 seconds now its own length is 1,192 M meaning [Music] the Cairo is holding position at geostationary orbit above the City of Cairo on Earth hence its name meaning it is orbiting around Earth at the same speed that Earth itself rotates in order to do this the Cairo must be orbiting at 3,000 m/s and with the marathon moving in the same due direction as the Cairo we can then accurately suggest that the marathon at least is capable of traveling 3,198 m/s again it still seems really slow for a ship of this size but nevertheless the marathon weighs in at 12 million tons now at that kind of velocity if the marathon was piloted towards say a planet barring interaction with the atmosphere it would hit the planet with the energy of 14,671 666 tons of TNT basically 14,671 kons a little under a thousand times as powerful as the bomb dropped in Hiroshima which is huge levels of Destruction but again given that this isn't a maximum speed it's an estimation based on a very limited observation it is likely that the maximum speed is much much higher an example of a much higher acceleration and top speed is that of the in Amber clad as it pursued the solemn Penance from Mombasa it travels its own length in fractions of a second suggesting an extremely high top speed difficult to accurately chart based on the in-game cut scene so one can only imagine the G's of acceleration possible to go from a standstill to that speed in such a short space of time now on this particular point I make no specific claims on the accuracy of this estimation this is literally eyeballing it from the in-game cut scene so take it at face value but in the last moments of this cut scene where inabber clad puts her end to full and Rockets through the slip space Rift directly behind Solem pennant it looks like she can travel her own length in just under 50 milliseconds which means in this particular cut scene in Amber clad was traveling at 9,560 m/s and for a ship with a tonnage of 930,000 tons that means that if it were directed towards a planet it would hit with the equivalent force of 10,15 7 kilotons of TNT which is about a third less than that of the marathon we covered earlier but the marathon was traveling about a third as fast and yet weighs over 12 times more the scary thing being that the marathon class Heavy Cruiser is a much newer ship than the stard class light frigate that the enam clad is meaning one can only assume the engine technology has become more powerful yet if the marathon is capable of even the same velocity as an Amber clad it would hit a planet with the force of 131,132 and a half SAR bombers going back to our previous point on more or less Limitless supply of energy being fed to the fusion drives from the fusion reactor UNC ships could hypothetically accelerate continuously then we have a very very different problem all together a marathon rated at 12 million tons could accelerate at a very very conservative acceleration of 1G it could hit 35,283 784 9911 kilotons of TNT the same as 31 s bombers basically the punch line is this the thrust and acceleration witnessed in game for UNC ships along with their immense masses thrust method and energy Supply is such that any of them could be used as a weapon of mass destruction by simply colliding it with a colony even more worrying thing is is that all of these ships don't
