UNDISPUTED - Skip reacts to the Pelicans parting ways with Stan Van Gundy

the pelicans made a bit of a surprising move yesterday as they parted ways with stan van gundy he only coached the zion williamson led team for just one season as they failed to even make the playing tournament at 31 and 41. new orleans will now enter another offseason looking for the right candidate to coach their young team led by the all-star shannon your opinion was this the right move to fire stan van gundy after just one year no skip i don't know i'm trying to figure out what did you learn about stan van gundy in the one year coaching that you didn't know you watched him coach in miami you watched him coach in new orleans orlando he is what he is detroit yep he is what he is so i don't know what you thought you were going to get skip there was a saying and the politics they said socialism worked until you run out of other people's money now david griffith has spent five million dollars to five day uh alvin gentry he just spent 15 million dollars of the fire stand van gundy now there was an article earlier this year in which j.j redick said players don't y'all trust david griffey david griffin is finding out you know he always he since he's been away from cleveland he's taken his chances to take an opportunity to take shots at lebron but what we're starting to see he's not as good as we actually thought when he don't have lebron and kyrie i will agree with that you know he's about well lebron the way lebron was trying to build a team it won't work it doesn't have longevity well hell you get an opportunity to build a team and it's not working because you find two coaches in two years yep skip i get it in today's game you got to be a coach you got to be a therapist you got to be a gamer you got to talk fortnite you got to talk uh grand theft auto you got to do all that kind of stuff because these players not skipped they only on some other stuff yep and so it's getting more and more like the old guard of coaches agree it's really maybe not resonating because we see especially with a young team now you see steve nash you get veteran guys you get young guys ty lue he got a veteran ball you know when he got where he was with cleveland he had a veteran ball club but when you get guys that are 21 and 20 and 22 years of age gift it's a different but i still don't believe you've seen it you've seen enough from stan van gundy in one year he said you know what my best player is zion i need to find ways to get him the ball more skip hell why don't i just give him the ball and say you bring the ball up uh-huh their problem is not i don't think it was stan van gundy they don't want to play no defense zion don't want to play defense brandon don't want to play defense i mean you got a couple of guys bledsoe could play defense josh hart he got injury defense lonzo plays defense but for the most part kill off they have no problem scoring and stopping the other team from scoring but i don't believe one year was enough okay what did i tell you from the first day this was reported you said he wasn't the right power wrong guy right place stan van gundy isn't just old school he's like nerdy and i kept describing them as this sort of naggy whiny i'm gonna use an old-school term fuss budget where he's just constantly just fingernails on your chalkboard in the locker room dwight howard and orlando used to make fun do impressions of stan i get it that he knows basketball but with these kids i knew what was gonna happen sooner than later that zion and zoe and b.i and josh hart and jackson hayes were just gonna tune him out because it's not like he's trying to impose his will on you right because he's not that dominant of a personality it wasn't like my way or the highway right he's just nagging on you to try to do this and try to do that until you just tune them out and bledsoe on that one sideline huddle made made a boneheaded play at the end of the game he just clearly he wouldn't even listen to what stan was saying in the huddle so i thought it was wrong from the start and their body language told you wrong wrong wrong because that team at least should have been the eight spot playoff team or at least to play in 31 and 41. yeah and do you know how many leads this team believes it seems like every other night because i'm watching every game because it's must-see tv right they're blowing another lead they had no idea what they were doing in fourth quarters because he couldn't reach them so it was a bad hire which should reflect on david griffin yes so woage yesterday i saw it reported that they began to clash david griffin and stan van gundy because david griffin is saying i didn't really know him because i hadn't even met him until the interview process okay well that's on you yes right but skip that's normally how it works i mean most of the time when you hire somebody you don't know him that's how unless you had a relationship or you had worked with him somewhere oh you get a situation like sean marx right and with steve nash yeah where they play together so they're familiar yeah okay sometimes you do get familiarity where a guy was in a situation or elton brand i'm sure elton brand and doc rivers had caught cross paths at some point in time in their careers uh uh doc was a player in this league coached in this league for a number of years elton brand was a player in this league brad was a was rookie of the year but it's an all-star he was so i'm sure he's there in chicago when he was yeah so i'm sure they've crossed cross path yeah at some point in time but skip why so why do you say that now well i ain't really know him so why'd you hire him just because you didn't have to hire him because you interviewed him that makes you i don't know if he noticed this knows this skill but that makes david griffin look even worse totally agree and mrs benson yeah you're seeing this has got to start saying wait a second did we get rid of the wrong fire you spitting the hell out of my money right because ain't no ain't no repercussions okay so i'm a big chauncey phillips fan okay know him like him believe in him he he's doing really strong solid good things right a little bit behind the scenes yes under ty luke yeah with the clip telling me guys to put yeah i i but you know chauncey i believe he could be a really good head coach in this league i do too so i i would recommend him for this group of young players i think he could work wonders i definitely believe you uh probably a guy that can relate to him skip and you're probably gonna have you know put the uh uh uh the film study you got to put it in the playstation and watch it on the big screen like that and give them the grain controllers or something like that but these kids are different these days but i think they would listen to chauncey in ways they would never listen to stan van gundy and yet in the end is it possible new orleans has a david griffin problem yes could chauncey deal with david griffin because you also have to play both games you know you got to deal with the kids but you got to deal with your superior your i don't know another coach coming in and he's thinking about firing him i think mrs bisson might get rid of him maybe because skip at the end of the day you remember that game the pelicans had a three-point lead the only thing you beat you that's what i'm saying is this the eric bledsoe game right and but that was something that got caught between the guys he got he got caught and he kicks it to him it didn't boom the only i know i got it all right well they got to figure something out there because like you said shannon a lot of that money is just going in at this point a former nfl gm called out aaron rodgers guys you're going to want to hear exactly how much he dug into the packers quarterback did not hold back next paul george scored 37 points as the clippers took a 3-2 series lead over the jazz why leonard missed the victory with a knee injury and there is currently quote no timetable for his return the series now shifts back to la on friday where the clips will look to advance to the western conference finals against the suns chris broussard still with us chris what shot do you give the clippers of winning this series without kawhi leonard well let me admit this first gen i was wrong i was absolutely wrong about the clippers and i keep being wrong about them because i keep writing them off i wrote them off after they were down 02 to dallas i wrote them off after kawhi got hurt and they just keep coming back and um i said yesterday on this show that they had absolutely positively no chance of winning game five let alone the series so i stand corrected my only saving grace is i think skip had less faith in them than i did i said d-u-n done yeah they look i i think and i look i don't think they're in control of the series obviously they're playing at home in game six so there's that but i i still think this is really a 50 50 series uh utah is not dead i gotta give ty lou and we've all thrown him his flowers throughout this postseason right what he did yesterday it's not the first time this series but it was blatant yesterday he has reggie jackson who obviously is a journeyman right hunting the defensive player of the year all right it's one thing to hunt steph curry all right but he hunted the defensive player of the year rudy gobert got him in pick and rolls and gobert ends up guarding reggie jackson and jackson's just reigning jump shots all over his head great coaching move um he really it was embarrassing for the defensive player of the year and i voted for gobert and i think he rightfully won it but that's obviously not his forte it was almost like a hack of ben because it's that type of embarrassing thing where you're such a great defender and they're pulling you out to your your discomfort zone right yeah and they're just exposing you and it can be deflating for your team because it's like man this is our champion this is our guy and he's getting beat at his own game on the defensive end so credit to tyloo for that obviously you got to give playoff p big time props um i didn't i've i have felt like throughout this post season even as he's played well that there's been a war going on in his head and so you don't know what you're gonna get but last night man he looked like the old playoff p who battled with the miami heat lebron d wade and chris bosh in indiana and gave them all they wanted even though his wingmen were roy hibbert and lance stevenson you know so credit to paul george it won't it wasn't quite what kevin durant did the night before but it was close it was a classic performance his 22 points in the first half absolutely saved them because utah was on fire from three and in many cases it would have been over they'd have been up by 25 30 points but his three his play with the 22 first half points kept them alive they're only down five in the first half so i don't think it'll be a travesty if the clippers lose this series because they're without kawhi and utah is a very good team but they have a legitimate chance to win this thing as i said it's 50 50. and if they beat utah without kawhi then heck you got to give them a good chance against phoenix
