welcome to espn college football presented by playstation 5. a rainy day at keenan stadium in chapel hill but a big game in the acc undefeated north carolina undefeated virginia tech two teams ranked in the top 20. an early power struggle in a conference trying to make a comeback and prove it's not just clemson that we should be talking about in the acc we've been talking about coronavirus and we have been talking about its impact on college football all summer and fall long and boy has it impacted virginia tech their opener moved to later in september then practice was paused because of an outbreak for the hokies their game against virginia postponed until december they play their opener minus 23 players and win they play last week against duke duke minus 21 players and win how many players will they be without today boy dr jerry punch the hits just keep on coming for the hokies [Music] they do bob and hello everyone you know folks after all the absences the past couple of weeks the news is finally good for the hokies at virginia tech today for the first time they will have every single full-time assistant coach available to him and just 15 total players out not nearly as many as the past two weeks now here's the bad news that the bulk of those 15 players are on defense mostly at one position group and that could be a recipe for disaster against a strong-armed quarterback like north carolina's sam howell bob well with the legend dr jerry punch bob wishes and dan arlovski it is amazing that this virginia tech team has survived all of this and yet they're two and up it's an incredible story in college football that they've not only fielded a team but they've won two games and looked well they get their defensive coordinator back today and justin fuente has said listen through all this i've learned flexibility over regiment and how will that secondary then again is depleted today stop this guy sam howe he set records last year in the acc we'll see him coming up next it is game time at chapel hill bible schools and dan arlovsky dr jerry punch virginia tech won the toss deferred their option to the second half and we are underway a top 20 matchup and a top 10 team in north carolina and there's a reason why dan they are a top 10 team they have a quarterback that can light you up he's outstanding outside of the pocket he's outstanding inside of the pocket he's definitely grown in every aspect of the position ball distribution his eye discipline running their huddle knowing situational football he's got two outstanding playmakers on the outside he's my version of college football is russell wilson i love watching him play i think he's got an opportunity to have a big day against the beat up secondary well when you're sam howell and you break records that had just been set by trevor lawrence not too bad last season more yards and touchdowns than trevor lawrence broke trevor lawrence's true freshman record for touchdown passes in the acc and if north carolina can run the ball effectively today and set up play action for sam howe they will be tough to stop and michael carter has a gain of five on first down the heels waste no time out of the air out to the edge to beau corrales a couple of yards shy of a first down jermaine waller made the stop i think that's something that north carolina north carolina wants to do early get the ball out of sam howell's hands get some completions get themselves just comfortable in this game instead of trying to force the ball downfield [Music] [Applause] the tight end's got a first down garrett walston converts on third down and two nicely designed play and sam howe executes it to perfection yeah really good third and two you put formation into the boundary and if they blitz just kick it out there good blocking on the perimeter by the north carolina receivers that's exactly why that second play that second down play was such a big deal [Applause] now looking downfield wanted to unload a deep one a flag is out and he will throw deep over the middle hit the traffic and it's broken up intended for d'ami brown but let's check the marker back at the line of scrimmage number 72 offense 10-yard penalty repeat first down that's on the seam richards the left tackle as we check our impact players for this carolina offense against this virginia tech defense i think diamond brown is one of them and daz nuzum is the other these two dynamic best play-making wide receivers in the acc and then for virginia tech defensively hewitt's gonna have to push the pocket awesome and then ashby you're gonna have to beat this north carolina front whether it's back door over the top you got to use your quickness to slow down their run game [Applause] on first and 20 they'll run it for a handful with michael carter brought down by tyler matheny and tyler matheny a walk on safety forced to start because of all of the covid related and injury related absences in the virginia tech secondary they were without their top four corners and their best free safety in divine diablo last week and still managed to find a way to beat duke howell on second and 16. corrales breaks a tackle it'll set up third down and four really good job by sam howell there was eye discipline seeing what the secondary was doing to get the ball out of his hands this is what they want live in as many third and shorts as you can live in better execution opportunities bottom of our screen this is the duo newsome and diami brown where can you get those guys match-ups where they can win one on one newsome in the slot dearmi brown widest to the near side left that's the way how's looking on third down low throw scooped up by kaz newsome and that is good for a fresh set of carolina downs yeah really good job sam howell sees it ball comes out great job of securing that catch by daz newsom dearmi brown ran off the outside you can see dad's going i don't i don't think you can cover me one-on-one very confident player [Music] javonte williams up the middle for a first down and more look at 22 right there hanging he's hanging on sam howell is the runner and he's not able to close that gap here that's why some of these zone reads the rpos as long as the quarterback is willing to run the football and hurt you a little bit caused those defenders to play hesitant football howl another hookup with daz newsom he's got a first down and on daz newsom in the spring game had a ball go right through his hands and the wide receiver coach lonnie galloway said can you see okay that hit you in the chest plate maybe we should go to the eye doctor not long after that contact lenses really pretty good idea it's a great wide receiver and there he is making catches out of the edge he caught everything after he could see right up the middle once again breaking tackles is michael carver in its first and goal for north carolina virginia tech brings the pressure you shut it down 75 pull around kick out michael carter's a very fast back that's got great vision loves to get downhill carter again on first and goal keeps his legs churning and gets turned back inside the two at about the one-yard line it will be second down and gold eventually norell pollard was able to stand him up [Music] north carolina running a couple more big bodies on the field tight end comes off extra offensive lineman comes on this is where they've grown in their offense development why is it sam hamill sam howell he is a viable runner here keep your eyes on him with his own read javonte williams at 220 pounds lines up as the deep back he takes the handoff goal line touchdown north carolina made it look awfully easy on their first [Music] [Applause] possession pulling offensive lineman clean up the whole great vision by javonte williams no reason to follow the pull you see a seam [Music] finish on 11-play 75-yard touchdown drive to start for north carolina grayson atkins knocks through the point after undefeated eighth in america and a seven nothing lead javonte williams already with five touchdown runs on the season welcome back to the acc on espn a rainy muggy day chapel hill but a football saturday and the number eight team in america off to a very good start on eleventh play 75 yard touchdown drive for north carolina they ran it six times they threw it five times six different players touch the football and there might be three different players that touch the football from under center today dan for virginia tech we might see all three quarterbacks well i mean justin fuente thinks that he's got two bona fide starters and hendon hooker is a little bit more of a uh on rhythm timing player more traditional quarterback where braxton burmeister is a little bit more recess style of football tries to be a playbacker played pretty well last week in a win so it'll be interesting not only who starts but then if hendon hooker gets some snaps burmeister does get the start but we expect that hendon hooker will make an appearance at some point they'll start it on the ground and that's khalil herbert who gets out to about the 30-yard line it's a gain of five on first down now burmeister is the oregon transfer it was justin herbert's back up and then made the move to virginia tech and he has now had an opportunity to become the starter with hinden hooker ready to play at the start of the season but then a non-covid related illness has kept him out but apparently he's rehabbed and has practiced enough to have a chance to play but burmeister is the start i think justin fuente is going okay burmeister you gave us a chance you've got a ton of practices and you come off a win you know i think it's hard to take a kid off the field after that there's pressure coming off the top of the screen number four right here we got to handle their pressure are you sure that's where the pressure is coming from with this carolina defense you never know right it comes from the other side and burmeister makes a man miss and that ball is jarred free in and out of the hands of trey turner [Applause] this play is really made by 44. the pressure's initially going to come off this side but they end up changing it camel changes to play and it's going to come from the corner patrice renee off his right side that forces burmeister to get out of that pocket now he makes a good accurate throw you just want to see that catch be made great job by the safety don chapman coming up and knocking that ball out but that that pressure that blitz was changed by gamel the linebacker such a great player quarterback wise in that defense matt brown calls the timeout from the sideline as inside their own 35-yard line virginia tech lined up to go for it we'll see if they do [Music] college football on abc is presented by playstation 5. play has no limits i have a big head but i've never been part of the big heads before this is a big day for me to be next to you and dr jerry brunch your head is so big you can justify taking up two seats easily we can also we can also now say we were in chapel hill also i grew up watching dr jerry punch like this like legendary this is my first game ever doing one with him so yeah this is like looking up at mount rushmore and actually seeing one of the guys there as dr jerry punch on the sideline bob shoes and dan orlowski is there actually a chance virginia tech will snap the football this is going to have to be a kick right and it is a pooch punt from the quarterback burmeister and it certainly gets the job done they will flip field position all the way down to the north carolina 17-yard line seven nothing the heels have the lead let's check in for the first time with kevin degan hey bob the studio update is brought to you by att 5g let's go to kyle field and college station and focus on the kyles from florida trask the pits again for the seventh time this season in the end zone gators up seven nothing over the aggies early back to you boy dan has there been an offense that has looked better than florida earlier this season they are ringing like a pinball machine they're bringing up now do you think anyone's going to cover kyle krasko or kyle pitts like hey guys they're going they're going to throw him the football [Applause] ball start against the heels so it'll be first down at 15. [Applause] proud of the snap false start number 75 offense still first down as we said dr jerry punch is with us doc [Applause] hey guys thank you very much you know after that opening drive the body language for the hokey defense they were somewhat shell shocked coaches came over and said look guys we got this we got this they're in a quick game not a drop back game we have to get our hands up we have to focus on the run and above all when they check we have to check out of some of those blitzes they made some change well can't stand up to the run here as michael carter looks like he has another north carolina first down [Applause] coach punch brings up a great point i wrote down in my notes after that first north carolina drive you hurt the blitz and you tested the eyes of virginia tech so they got to get better at that real quick in this first quarter like when they're gonna call their pressures the guys have to get to the certain spots the correct places if guy blitz and you're the safety that's supposed to replace you got to replace and then they got to have better eye discipline for everything that's going on in the backfield of north carolina play action how incomplete at the feet of diamie brown a challenge for the defense don't get me wrong like it's challenging when you go okay linebackers you guys are going to pressure safety you've got to come down but then i go okay coach you want me to replace the linebacker but then the guy the tight end is going into the flat or something like that so it's it's about doing it at the right time with great discipline and understanding kind of the tears of how you go about doing things replacing eyes in the right place stop the run get to the pass owl on the slant and this time perfectly thrown kaz newsom breaking tackles across the 50. they're just crushing this rpo game the nickel stays too high daz newsome replaces them and you see a little bit of athletic ability see that nickel defender drop underneath kind of lost in space with the athletic ability after the catch that's what north carolina is living in right now it is just a heavy dose of the rpo game and i mentioned the eyes jet sweep on the end around to noosa he's got blockers and he's got about eight yards cut down by jermaine waller but second down and two i think phil longo the offensive play caller from north carolina i think great play callers right now attack defenders not just defenses and i think he's looking at jamari connor the nickel for virginia tech number 22 and going okay this is the guy right here this is the guy that they feel they can attack play action sam howell going up top looking end zone caught dearmi brown did he get a toe down it looks like he did that's a carolina touchdown what a beautiful job by sam howell in the pocket love the air on the throw young brown get your feet in very close very close did he catch not [Music] [Applause] available i wouldn't be surprised surprised if the replay booth buzzes down because they may want to take a look at what we just showed you but it looks like a quick confirmation of the touchdown and d'ami brown the ninth touchdown catch that he's got of 30 plus yards since the beginning of last season he's a big play wide receiver and it's a two touchdown north carolina lead a methodical first drive and now the big play second run great job early on in this drive with the run pass option and sam howe sam sam howell hangs in the pocket beautiful air touchdown tar heels [Music] bobble shoes dan arlovski dr jerry punch very impressive tar heels start up by two touchdowns midway through the first quarter and this will be a touch back on the kickoff dan back to the touchdown this is a great job of formation in the boundary you put offensively your trips there that's gonna force that safety to have to roll over the top that way and you're gonna leave a one-on-one with your receiver and when you get that situation you tell your receiver you have to go win on your route now freeze it right there this is why he wins on his route he is going to go with a little bit of a double move he's going to nod to his outside get that corner to slip off and then cross his face on the post again great job by sam howell in the pocket but they took the safety away because of the formation diary brown go win great route running by the junior touchdown tar heels let's see if virginia tech can now respond quarterback run for burmeister and he spins for three yards brought down by don chapman virginia tech is a run first run second football team 14 nothing i get all that you still have to stay patient stay committed to your game plan don't try to change who you are because what the scoreboard says right now stay committed to your run game play action ermeister floats one down the sideline and it's broken up into triple if not quadruple coverage for james mitchum let's check in with kevin bob lsu mizzou with that game moved to columbia due to concerns over hurricane delta and miles brennan down seven nothing six for six perfect so far finds terrace marshall we got a tie game over on the scc network back to you well it's all north carolina early here bob schuster dan orlowski dr jerry punch 7 14 to go in the first quarter and it's 14 nothing heals and a third down for virginia tech watch camel 44 right here he's the communicator he he runs the show when it comes to what's going on pre-snap check-wise [Applause] ermeister out of the pocket one-on-one against camel in the open field and jeremiah gimmel makes the tackle and it is a third down stop for north carolina i just think this kid's such a good football player super smart plays the position like a quarterback runs the defense at the line of scrimmage because this is a defense that loves to do a ton of stuff it looks like star wars just a ton of moving parts and you better have somebody that knows what's going on gimmo's out standing at it we asked jay bateman the defensive coordinator for the heels about jeremiah gimmel he said look he is our alpha male he is the guy that we run our defense through [Applause] and the guy that they run their offense through it's sam howell look how good this is he's just reading a single defender we talked about that formation titan jab step easy throw easy first down off one single guy and then here comes another look this is run to that defense and sam how's just gonna have vision on that safety he goes to middle field that's one-on-one pitch and catch on the outside easy completions for the quarterback now listen these aren't necessarily easy plays to operate but you're giving him very distinct guidelines you read that guy if that guy does this let's do this with the football and so just a very good understanding of how they want to execute their offense [Applause] javonte williams nine yards on first down is that the secret to good offense make something that looks complicated be simple for the players to execute oh for sure i mean the great teams in the nfl do it sean mcvay in the rams the buffalo bills i mean it's it's simple plays but a lot before the snap now that time the pass intended for corrales was broken up and it'll be third down and one jermaine waller jumped up and got a pass defense often referenced it to like this like it's a great illusionist you know i want everyone to pay attention to what i'm doing over here i'm really doing something somewhere else and it's super simple and it's just constantly challenging the eyes and the thought process of a defense it also helps have really good players that's breaking it down third down and one can virginia tech get a stop and get off the field they cannot pyle driving his way for a first down with devonte williams i think for north carolina like phil longo their offensive coordinator believes in that a little bit talking to him he's like listen guys football is a simple game played by complicated people coached by complicated people and he's like i don't want to over burden my players with too much information we recruited you for a reason i'm going to try to create some space for you advantage for you you go make some plays with your athleticism how well protected wheel route to javonte williams they are dicing up this hokey's defense i love it looking from the mesh from the right side bring those receivers across forces that defender again to play present hesitant football connor number 22 talked about it just a little hesitation sam howell kicks it out to the back easy throw big game that time it's cut down at the line of scrimmage daz newsom made the catch and immediately jermaine waller was right at his ankles but waller just anticipates this play kind of guesses he's seen a couple of those balls they've gone out to the flat bubbles and whatnot he knifes inside of corrales and up bends it daz newsome really good job but i promise you this phil longo saw that and he said okay corner you're gonna do that we're gonna do one of these bubble pumps and we're gonna send a guy down the [Applause] sidelines al avoids a sack tucks it under slides near the first down takes a shot out come the flags and chamari connor might be done the moment howe starts to give himself up he becomes a defenseless player this would be targeting if this is ruled forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless player at the very least it's a personal fight after the play personal foul unnecessary rough is targeting number 22 defense 15-yard penalty from the end of the run the previous play is under further review good job by howl of making a bad play into a good one you know it's that old 50-50 for a defensive player he's running i start to commit to bring him down he then goes into a slide i'm halfway there i'm already committed to hitting him what do i do at the same time that is a defenseless player that is being hit in the head listen that looks really bad and i'm thankful that howell's okay i've had this conversation with defenders so many times and they have expressed to me how hard it is in that moment to make like to have that decision what do i do do i play hesitant like it's i've never played defensive football so as i'm trying to have a little bit of i guess sympathy for connor here further review the ruling of the on the field of targeting is confirmed number 25 number 22 is disqualified for the remainder of the game and i think it's targeted indisputable i just think it's very difficult for those defenders that's all now remember all of the coveted absences for virginia tech no personnel group has been hit harder for the hokies than their secondary and that might be the best remaining secondary player they had coming into today's game that's now out as well and they haven't been able to stop north carolina on their first two drives plus to begin with so this for coach fuente is about as bad a recipe as he could have hoped for as already now north carolina with the two touchdown leads in the red zone and you just lost a player at a position group you can't afford to lose javonte williams breaks a tackle breaks another to the go live and he's in for another carolina touchdown [Applause] very physical run by williams smells the goal line a little bit of a hurdle step how about that balance right there definitely a touchdown a great physical athletic run by javonte williams 224 total yards for north carolina 13 yards for virginia tech and the second rushing touchdown for javonte williams 21-0 tomorrow at 10 a.m it's a sunday nfl countdown start to your day an inside look at how the post-game jersey exchange is evolving this season and then our monday night football match up chargers in new orleans to take on the saints in eastern on espn espn deportes and the espn app of course the broncos and patriots have been postponed at least temporarily until five o'clock so we've got a monday night football double header for you on monday beginning at five eastern [Music] watch the tape to get ready for this game your impression was north carolina's the better team oh yeah hard to imagine you thought they were this much better this is a dominant performance in the first quarter yeah i mean but in our conversation i said listen if north north carolina has not played nearly as good as they could in their first two games and they won obviously and i said listen if they play a a game they're just too good they're too talented on the outside they're too good up front they got two really good backs one of the best quarterbacks in america and i think their defense is fantastic and right now through 11 minutes of this football game they look like an a game right now for the tar heels who will be at quarterback for virginia tech on this next possession we'll find out after we check in with kevin nagandi bob time now for our protection spotlight brought to you by allstate where take a look at a great touchdown play in the cotton ball spencer rattler good protection stepping up and marvin it's oh my goodness wide open right now 10-0 oklahoma over touch in the first quarter looked like a blown coverage shot the red river rifle shocking texas blew a coverage uh hendon hooker at some point we were expecting to see on the field down 21 to nothing though braxton burmeister is still out there for virginia tech one for three for two yards to begin straight quarterback run on first down and he's blown off after a gain of maybe a yard again it's don chapman coming up from safety to make the stop [Applause] screen pass rahim blackshear maybe manages another yard it'll be third down and eight what great discipline on the perimeter by north carolina trey morrison takes his block michael takes his block and allows people to run to the football and i've talked about it like this is not the situation you want to be in first north carolina defensively they are going to give you a ton of looks hendon hooker looking on like might be my opportunity to come play but here comes all this potential pressure on north carolina's defense that you've got to try and decipher burmeister may give way to hooker before too long but this time against a third down pressure look he's able to find nick gallo for a much needed hokies good job motioning the tight end gallow across they catch him on the blitz the ball gets out before the pressure can get there in a good completion that's where they're gonna have to try and be really good with pre-snap motion to confuse north carolina defensively and then don't wait snap the football look at communication look at the back end communication right here from north carolina chapman communicating morrison what who's doing what where burmeister he's got about five yards i thought your comment this week that perfectly summed up the north carolina defense was don't trust them they're all liars yeah it's it's because as a quarterback you stand at the line of scrimmage well you'll watch tape and you'll be like okay i can get tells off what the defense is doing for this person or alignment or front okay and then you get to the line of scrimmage and you're trying to see if your preparation is accurate and then all of a sudden you're like wait that guy he should have been playing cover two but he played cover three or that guy looked like he was blitzing but he didn't and it's just you can't believe anything that your eyes tell you priests now bubble scream trey turner dodging tacklers gets loose down the sideline goes turner stays in bounds written out finally by don chapman but a big play sprung by the hokies gets them in position to get on the scoreboard fall out blocking on the perimeter trey turner is a playmaker explosive guy how many big play trey how many touches can they get in his hands can you see the elusiveness in the open field and then the ability to get down the sideline this is what virginia tech's offense needed you know like try to loosen up this defense for north carolina a little bit you got a huge third down conversion and then you get a playmaker with the ball his hands on the perimeter and if you're a carolina fan wondering well they were blocking before the ball was thrown as long as the officials see that the ball is caught right at or behind the line of scrimmage you can block it's not offensive pass interference and now we've got an injured tar heel to worry about as well this week quarterbacks highlight our saturday night football game with the eric king number seven miami taking on trevor lawrence and number one clemson 7 30 eastern on abc and the espn app as we take a look at our all-state playoff predictor and talk about the chances of being in the playoff being greatly influenced by the outcome of tonight's game how about miami if they win or lose tonight's game we're basically saying they've got a two-thirds chance to be in the playoff or no chance just based on the outcome of tonight's game i think that's going to be a fun game to watch i think that dear king is a difference maker offensively clemson's got a ton of athleticism on the field defensively but i just think he's a special player that can close that talent gap come on fox off the field now for north carolina he was the injured tar heel and he is a difference maker in that front seven they'll keep it on the ground here with raheem blackshear the rutgers transfer picks up about a yard and a half you know very interesting right now the north carolina defensively they got all 11 guys about 10 yards from the line of scrimmage their defensive coordinator jay bateman has said we are you're not going to run the football on us we're not going to lose this game because we're we're so scared of the deep ball we're going to make you run versus our defenders close to the football and if our corners play well you can't throw the ball on his downfield low snap hermeister gets a block takes a hit and it's close to a first down that brings up a very important red zone third down for virginia tech down 21 to nothing this is just from a yeah from a mental standpoint you can't imagine a field goal does too much for them and i think they've got something when they when they put those three receivers to one side of the field and leave the tight end to the other side of the field by himself they've got some really successful quarterback run going back that way this is third and one becomes second one right now for their offense as a play caller with brad cornelson this is a second at one play call you're going for it on fourth down first down carry by raheem blackshear it is first and goal for virginia tech and that should take us to the end of the first quarter unless the hokies line up quickly and snap it but down to 10 seconds to go in what has been a north carolina dominated first quarter but virginia tech in a goal to go situation and that will indeed take us to the end of the first [Applause] dominant performance by the heels in the opening quarter couple of touchdown runs for javonte williams we'll come back with the start of the second quarter after these messages [Music] braxton burmeister in a goal to go situation against north carolina guess who played for north carolina back in the 80s his father danny he's a hokey fan today though and here's his son with a pitch out to the perimeter for blackshear but it was deflected and falls incomplete so we start the second quarter with virginia tech trying to get on the board but now it's second down and goal really nice job by hopper the outside linebacker not fighting to that jet sweep motion getting his hand on that football because blackshear is going to walk in if it doesn't get knocked down i really think that virginia tech is still treating this as first down this is a four down territory for them and quarterback run needs to be up it's an empty backfield and there is straight quarterback run for burmeister he's at the goal line just barely gets turned back inside the one so it will be third down and goal i love the call and then burmeister just kind of sorting his way through those holes this is pretty good by a quarterback now trying to get that ball over the pylon great fight by north carolina's defensive backs led by chapman again i'm treating this as second and goal from virginia tech offensively find the extra unblocked defender i got two backs in the backfield can i follow them for a quarterback run again how about a handoff to the tight end for a walk-in touchdown james mitchell can't imagine that was what north carolina was expecting and what a vital touchdown drive for the hokies to get on the board see the tight end come from the right side great cut off blocks on the front side you lead with herbert on a frontside block and just really creative i mean it's it's very creative instead of putting the tight end at the line of scrimmage in a traditional alignment they bring him into the backfield and just hand them as a positionless player rather than just a tight end you're a defensive player in the front seven where do your eyes normally take you right you're looking at 25 figuring he's gonna follow the tight end yeah big deal tight end follows the running back right and the tight end's not in a normal alignment right so then i've got rules coach you didn't tell me about that rule type thing and so very good job play design by virginia tech it's time now for our aflac trivia question [Music] all right here we go dan see if you can reach into the ball and come up with this one when was the last time mac brown beat virginia tech as a head coach i know you know this it's in that mental troll index of college football information i think they want me to think that it had to be when he was at north carolina but i'm thinking are you sure that's what they want you to think probably when i say day i have no idea who kind of makes the questions either well matt brown the winningest coach in the history of north carolina of course this is his second stint and boy talk about a guy that is just mentally in a different place now than he was when he was the head coach of texas and is so open about it just having so much more fun being a head coach number one goal he said i'm not coming back to not have fun and i asked him coach through all this stuff like how are you doing it like how are you doing say listen these kids want to play they want to play and if they want to play i want to coach let's go to kevin nagandi we got a good back and forth between florida and texas a m kyle trask his 12th touchdown pass of the season in front of plenty of family and friends this one to cadarius tony gators up 14-7 kellen man though engineering a 14-play 94-yard drive finding caleb chapman we're tied up at 14 over on espn back to you so a m staying right there with that high-powered offense of the gators i thought florida's defense would play a little bit better today getting healthy calaman's a really good player as well if nagandi told me that kyle pitts got another touch and i was gonna run across the studio how important is this possession for the virginia tech defense and it starts with a five-yard penalty against carolina fall start number 75 offense five-yard penalty still first down joshua zudu the left guard commits the five-yard penalty you have to send your defense out there i would think saying boys we just got a touchdown to maybe get ourselves back in the game yeah we need to stop you know first of all as is as conor has left the game who's playing their nickel back like okay how do we adjust our plans for justin hamilton their defensive coordinator and keep the ball in front of them joffrey brown's first catch out to the 30-yard line like that's too easy on the first down i mean the corners 9 10 11 yards off like that that is going to be thrown every single time by this north carolina offense both brown brothers on the field joffrey and diami there's a handoff to carter it'll be a third down though he's tripped up for a gain of three so here is a chance for virginia tech to get a stop down by 14. third down and two ashby he's the quarterback of that virginia tech defense made the stop [Music] [Applause] sam howell dropped knocked out of the hands of dearmi brown as he was met by dorian strong a true freshman and now it's fourth down and two great job by strong left side of our screen pass breakup but don't just go hit the receiver he punched with that left hand right there to knock that ball out of deomi brown's hands that's a disappointing drop for this north carolina offense too good of a player dearmi brown to drop that football but bob you mentioned at the beginning of the drive like this you find a way to win find a way to get off the field in the back-to-back possessions for the football team offense score defense get off the field could be huge also no program prides their self themselves more on their special teams abilities than virginia tech fair catch though made here at the 31 yard line by tavion robinson so down by two scores jack has the ball back time to answer our aflac trivia question when was the last time mac brown was a winner against virginia tech as a head coach dan knew this he said it to me just in my ears again tulane i was right pretty good look at here's back brown head coach of tulane before he took over at north carolina and then of course before he went on to become a national championship winning head coach at texas [Music] field position just got a little bit better for virginia tech as there was a holding call against north carolina on the punt and now we do have the anticipated quarterback switch as hendon hooker is in the game to take over with great field position making his debut little zone read and handed hooker ahead for about six yards what dynamic do you expect hendon hooker now brings to this a little bit more deliberate quarterback run more zone read i think burmeister they tried to do with call it and run it quarterback runs where he's now the decision maker whether it's the handoff to the back or the quarterback run probably a little bit more of a a in structure better quarterback thrower than burmeister passing the football wise and so um very good athlete good thrower of the football just brings a little bit better dynamic with their zone read game caught behind the line is khalil herbert so now it'll be third down in a long five the last time they had this third down and long situation remember they used pre-snap motion to kind of catch the north carolina blitz defense off guard and get the ball of their hands quickly to the tight end mitchell i think that's a very big part of the plan it's pre-snap motion on third down to see if you can gain numbers one side of the other versus north carolina's blitzes bunch sets on third down and six north carolina brings a four-man rush white at the first down line to gain james mitchell did he hold on it does not look like he was able to secure the football so that'll be a three and a half great field position for virginia tech really just trying to make it a basketball play mitchell posted up against the rat the balls placed good on his right shoulder just not able to make that catch but i don't like the i didn't like the just the structure of the formation i don't think you can line up against north carolina on third in obvious passing situations and go we're just gonna get up and snap the football you got to challenge their communication with motion and shifting before the snap [Applause] oscar bradburn will try and at least control field position but he punts it into the end zone so for north carolina it will come out to the 20-yard line let's take a look at running back michael carter's military family as we honor those who serve brought to you by navy federal credit union his mom and dad both serving our country his mom susan ellington and the social work department for the air force and his dad tony carter a tech sergeant for the airports as well served for 20 years all around the world and so we thank michael carter and his family for your service 20-yard line to start for sam howe cut back lane for michael carter he's got six yards on first down i think that's one of the things that probably we don't talk about enough with michael carter bob is like really good vision he's a great athlete powerful fast really good vision when it comes back to comes the front side or backside holes sam howell that's dropped by dearmi brown let's check in with dr jerry punch hey guys coaches say somehow has grown immensely since last year not that he wasn't good as a freshman but making quicker decisions getting the ball out of his hand the flexibility and ability to adjust on his play calls and checks in fact his leadership role he's not a baker mayfield's not going to scream and yell but he's become a leader and like the guys at the next level he can have his face math look one way and his eyes look the other take that front hand off the ball and on a pump fake and that lets the db check so he is he has grown immensely since last year and offensive coordinator phil longo says he is becoming the quarterback we all knew he could be well third down at four here maz howell scanning the fields and he's going to go down thrown down by amari barno so virginia tech's defense starting to make some plays check in with kevin nagandi again bob texas quarterback sam ellinger said the university deserved better and after being down 10-00 to oklahoma the longhorns have life 10 straight points were tied in the cotton bowl back to you how about this virginia tech defense starting to flip the script a bit after three straight carolina touchdown drives to start the game well first of all it helps that down b brown's got two back-to-back drops but credit for virgin detect because early on this game they were getting hurt with their blitzes and now their blitzes are hurting north carolina's defense they flip the momentum it's a football saturday in chapel hill at the planetarium two touchdown lead for carolina [Music] college football presented by playstation 5 on abc is brought to you by pacific life more than 150 years strong trust in your tomorrow back at keynote stadium and there's a look at the helmet technology virginia tech's always been one of the leaders in testing helmets for safety and protocols but what they've been testing recently are the clear shields on the helmet the upper shields and the lower shields i determine the upper shield screens about 13 to 15 away from aerosols and i'll tell you what else they found after the play boy in the age of coronavirus trying to come up with helmets that will help burmeister back in the game at quarterback and that screen falls short of raheem blackshear doc and what they found out what's really been i think an eye-opener is that they put shields on the bottom part of the helmet not the upper part so you don't get the fogging and the shields on the bottom part screen like 85 percent of the aerosol particles which is where the cover corona virus hitchhikes so the upper shield 13 the bottom shields 85 combined together over 90 so virginia tech doing a lot of safety research that's going to impact the future what we do on the field maybe we should all be wearing virginia tech football helmets these days quarterback run four and a half yards for burmeister north carolina began the game just about as well as you could begin a game offensively three straight touchdown drives but virginia tech has answered with a touchdown and they're trying to figure out how you operate in the era of coronavirus as justin puente told us it was basically a flood of infections to start the season now they've got it down more to a trickle blitz on third down burmeister out of the pocket he's going to try and run for it spins right to the line again and it looks like they give him forward progress for a first down let's see where they spot the football that's really closer than i thought it was going to be it's a great job i permanently just kind of playing reactionary instinctual not necessarily how you draw it up the blitz comes and the side collapses it's like okay let me just go become a runner put his hand put his head down and try and go get that first down [Music] so it's fourth down and inches they have to get to the 40-yard line for a first down and the notes of the football just about there they're gonna go for it on fourth and one and they'll get it easily picking up the first down is raheem blacksheer watch the right side of the screen gallo right there just get a piece of asante to give that little scene for herbert right there i love the aggressiveness by virginia tech's offense they know they're going to have to go continue to score points to keep up with north carolina justin fuente said they were going to play this game aggressively and he shows it there on fourth and one cut back run for herbert and the kansas transfers got 11 yards and a first down and normally he wears 21. you see the 25 he has on well that's frank beamer's old number so it's an honor to wear 25. beamer would be proud of that run too because that's a very smart run you saw him cut back to number five patrice renee this run game for virginia tech is all about getting the ball to the unblocked defender five was not a blocked defender there it's on khalil herbert to understand where it is and then try to make that guy miss falling forward to create that first down herbert again finds another cutback lane but kansas he was a productive player but boy he has been a difference maker since coming as a transfer a grad transfer to virginia tech playing a big role in both of their first two wins it's funny i asked justin fuente like what about him through two games of live action has surprised you that you didn't know he said he's faster than i thought and this time he's there on blitz pickup burmeister keeps his eyes downfield and is able to throw one low the trade turner scoops up again great reaction by burmeister to get himself out of trouble [Applause] find trey turner scraping across the field i think virginia tech got away with one there there's an offensive lineman about six or seven yards downfield flag doesn't get thrown so luck going their way this is another good drive by burmeister and you see the athleticism like that's the thing he's made two plays this drive that are above the x's and o's that's why i think he needs to stay on the field quarterback run again or meister with a stiff arm first and goal for virginia tech [Applause] great little ball fake you're just getting that secondary to step towards that tail back herbert for a second now you suck them in and then can you beat them with speed to the outside burmeister doing it again i really love that three by one that trips formation for virginia tech offensively they're lined up in it again they got trips down to the bottom of the screen run back towards that boundary is a great play for them here comes the communication this is the cat and mouse game offense and defense herbert uses a stiff arm to the five-yard line at the pylon is he in that's a touchdown for virginia tech how patient on that run was khalil herbert look at this how great is this patience patience okay now here's my scene put my foot in the ground make somebody miss cam ron kelly can you make that tackle in the open field no and then the finish by herbert how about that violet left hand on the stiff arm the tight rope down the sideline another impressive drive by this virginia tech run game last week against duke a virginia tech record 358 yards all purpose for khalil herbert he had 207 yards and two touchdowns rushing this rushing touchdown is too unanswered now for virginia tech just like that we've got a one score game [Music] [Applause] college football's top two each battling in prime time tonight at 7 30 on abc and espn [Music] i can't wait to watch clemson in alabama later on tonight returnable kick go check that it's fair catch that'll bring it out to the 25-yard line so good job by michael carter to utilize that rule as we take a look at this week's college football rankings brought to you by goodyear a litmus test for clemson their first of the season tonight as they'll take on a top ten opponent in miami georgia tennessee later on this afternoon and alabama ole miss at 7 30 eastern as well on espn do you wonder about the acc because for the last however many handful of years this league has had the national perception of you're lousy outside of clemson and now you've got four teams ranked towards the top of the pole as sam howell with a handoff here to javonte williams he breaks the tackle he's got a first down and more all the way out to midfield does he stay in bounds they'll say he stepped out near the 50. but can miami compete with clemson tonight could this north carolina team compete with clemson as well well if javonte one's gonna run like that i mean makes methidi miss again have to make that open field tackle and you see like this is just a a high level of talent on north carolina's offense we fall in love with dearmi brown and daz newsom because they're great receivers these two backs michael carter and javonte williams are outstanding so if their offense is going to click like this they can be clemson absolutely and can we go back to the narrative of the acc i fought this for a couple years like i can't stand when people say that it's a really good conference williams this time turn back after a gain of a couple as the walk-on wants to play free safety tyler matheny comes up to make the stop we talked about all the absences in this secondary for virginia tech tyler matheny playing because devon diablo and tyree rogers both out at free safety fiance jenkins a rover also out breon murray one of their top corners out and they had their best corner caleb farley opt out before the season started to get ready for the draft carter first down let's check in with kevin nagondi bob let's go back to columbia take a look at today's capital one rewarding performance miles brennan three touchdowns of the first half how about to that freshman phenom eric gilbert 24-21 lsu over mizzou they've got good games everywhere the lsu missouri game is closed is close and now virginia tech with a couple of touchdowns has made this a one score game although carter gets loose again breaking tackles into the red zone and down to the five yard line ray shard ashby saved the touchdown talked about these backs to start this job now it's michael carter's chance like just the ability to break the tackles this is the second time we've seen him kind of be athletic hurdle over somebody the ability to contact balance run away from people where's the hole it's a duo that is as good as anybody in the country [Applause] it's a backwards pass caught by newsom daz newsom somersaults inside the pylon for a [Applause] touchdown we've got a penalty marker down it looks like that may have come down after the touchdown [Applause] after the play unsportsmanlike conduct number five offense that penalty will be enforced on the kickoff that is number five's first unsportsmanlike that at least helps virginia tech as carolina will have to kick from the 20-yard line [Applause] good ball placement by howl on that throw how about the block out front by corrales and then daz newsome on the finish i love that play call design search for that pylon [Applause] impressive drive by carolina as i said that was a backwards pass so that's actually a six yard touchdown run technically for taz newsom yeah that's gonna make me sick that's a bitter quarterback that obviously you ever lose a touchdown pass because you threw the ball backwards probably know probably like 50 of them now that i think about it i'm sure you would have had 50 more touchdown passes during your career if you threw a few like this we are back on espn college football presented by playstation 5 north carolina three touchdowns to begin the game virginia tech answered with two scores to make it a seven point game and the heels just put together a touchdown drive and now virginia tech back to the offense we'll see what kind of field position they get might be pretty good it is all the way out to about the 37-yard line goes khalil herbert well how many times has north carolina been ranked in the top 10. how about the 90s with mac brown 23 total weeks over a couple of seasons larry fedora briefly had them there in 2015. but now mac brown upon his return has them back as number eight coming into today's game i love spending time with him just talking like just talking about everything that's going on he said something yesterday who kind of blew my mind we were talking about everything that's going on this and he said you cannot mentor kids unless you win ermeister dirts it he wanted the tight end screen and it was not there so a good play by the quarterback and talk about feaster famine for both of these offenses an offense has either gone three and out or scored a touchdown and nothing in between i think that's part of the way north carolina structure a little bit to be honest with you i think they they want to be a team that pushes the ball downfield and is explosive but i'll go back like two of their drives were stopped by deomi brown drops first down drops so that hurt them a little bit too and then you know virginia tech like who's gonna play quarterback what's our comfort level burmeister has a decent drive he comes off the field hendon hooker goes in three and out burmeister comes back so i think for virginia tech it's a little bit of feeling themselves out who they're gonna be today or meister on a keeper and now it's third down in ten i want to go back to the mac brown comment though when he says like you can't mentor kids unless you win i just found it fascinating that he understands like those kids want to win first and once you show them that you can help them do that become better players and win that's when they'll buy into a lot of the off the field stuff of doing things the right way i'm out how to actually carry themselves out of the half 30-second timeout north carolina just spent time out defensively and coming up on the state farm halftime report kevin nagandi mark sanchez and booger mcfarland are standing by they'll give you an sec update lsu and mizzou in a tight one and also the gators and a m at college station that's been a good game as well and boy the red river showdown really took a hit in the past couple of weeks with the losses by texas and oklahoma i got a feeling oklahoma's gonna be okay i think they got a good coach you think it's okay i think rattler is gonna be okay i love this shot of mac though like coaching he's just still coaching we saw it before [Music] right around when the timeout got taken out he was getting in dray blight right there on our screen is dre bligh all american and north carolina i played with them in the nfl and i just love the fact that you that that's kind of the impact example right there like he wants to come back and be a part of north carolina be a part of what mac is doing his second stint there [Applause] north carolina brings a four-man rush on third down right at the first down line to gain it looks as if tabeon robinson may have it oh they give him a tough spot he steps out a yard shot great job by the offensive line who's coming all right pick that up and then burmeister hang in there and throw that ball out to the sideline outstanding job by robinson winning at the top of that route i'm not sure if that was the best spot virginia tech could have gotten forward progress for tavion robinson looked like he might have gotten to the line to gain but he's a yard short and they're going for it on fourth and one unless replay wants to take another look at that spot ruling on the fields ball carry will stop one yard line short of the line of game previous plays under further review i think this is worth looking at he needed to get to the 47-yard line to pick up a first down they marked him down at the 46 but he was shoved back i thought right about at the line to gain as kyler mcmichael was there in coverage [Music] placement right there he looks like he gets shoved out at the 46. now this is the one we need makes the catch right at the first down line to gain and now he is shoved so that's forward progress if he was coming first down if he was coming back of his own momentum and stepped out of bed back then you mark him out at the 46. if you're at the 47-yard line and you get pushed the ball should be spotted at the 47 where that push starts that is forward progress [Music] and that would be a huge call that's a third down and ten huge huge which is the first down as opposed to a fourth and one the ruling on the field is confirmed fourth down confirmed is the call that means they didn't have enough video evidence to overturn well no that actually means we got it right and we know we got it right i guess what they're saying is the momentum of tavion robinson is bringing him back to the 46-yard line regardless of the show because he certainly seemed to catch the ball right at the 47. this is that same formation they went forward on fourth and one before same motion they gave it to herbert and they get them to jump the hard count gets virginia tech it looks like a first down and there is the quarterback of the defense jeremiah gimmel that jumped off side defense number 44. five yard penalty results in the first down [Applause] that clap that clap by burn meister got him that's soldier himmel was kind of committed i'm going and nothing was going to stop him in that moment really good job using your cadence khalil herbert moves the pile for a couple of yards i think if you're you're virginia tech right now you're kind of in between this two-minute offense and almost four-minute offense right four-minute offenses burn this clock out let's try to end the game usually you want to burn this clock but also you got to have a little bit of urgency and tempo because you only have about 2 30 on the clock left to get some points eugene assante is down and injured that's a sophomore linebacker that the coaching staff from north carolina thinks is just as good he'd think they think he's the next chaz sarat or jeremiah gimmel on next saturday the hokies are on the acc network they'll host boston college in blacksburg and eight eastern they'll be looking to break a two-game losing streak to the eagles if you don't have the acc network go to getaccn.com for instant access [Music] [Applause] so quarterback run for burmeister and dan virginia tech just snapped the ball with about 30 seconds 30 more seconds on the play clock so if you want to make sure north carolina does not end up with any time before halftime offensively would you milk a little more clock here with your three timeouts yeah i mean i i i would have tried to take another 20 seconds or so off of that clock knowing that it was second and ten i'm going into third down now they snap it early again it's a screen now to tavion robinson not much there jared letis should pop a timeout and that sets up fourth down and north carolina they only have one timeout left but it looks like they're going to save it and you think virginia tech would probably let this clock wind down as far as possible will they go for it again on fourth down and three well they're going to line up to go for it one-on-one match-up at the top with your tight ends flexed out is this the heart count again play clock down to play five at two it goes to zero and a timeout was called by virginia tech just before a delay of game flag would have been 30 seconds well this season for every field goal and extra point made by participating universities allstate will make a contribution to the university's general scholarship fund thank you to allstate it's an interesting chess game decision here for virginia tech but that's why i felt like north carolina could have called time out there you knew virginia tech was gonna go for this right or more than likely they were gonna go for it they've been aggressive on fourth down all day and i know if i get a stop i've got 30 more seconds on the clock if i'm north carolina offensively right and so i think it was really good job by virginia tech of letting that clock go down and letting that clock go down because now you've minimized the amount of time that carolina does have if they get the football back they've been really good in those three by one formations of both run game but also kind of these some of these design perimeter get the ball out quickly lock on the perimeter plays so i think this is a dual kind of a double play call on the huddle braxton burmeister if you see a one-on-one or two-on-two on the outside let's try to get a pick and a rub if not we're gonna go quarterback run inside that box the timeout fourth down and three [Applause] and they will snap it for a meister there's the slack incomplete trey turner was hoping for a pass interference flag and it does not look like he will get one so now north carolina has a timeout and a minute and 11 on the clock and great field position great job right side of the screen look at the safeties playing inside out chapman and morrison morrison knows i can let that receiver win on my inside i've got chapman rolling down for my health and he kind of vices that receiver good job by north carolina defense now you got 71 seconds left in this half of your sam howell the big thing here is just getting some form of a completion on first down like let's get this two minute drive going know you've got one timeout in your pocket short game and with that timeout in a minute and four the clock will roll it'll be second down and three after the catch by daz newsom rather second down and six pardon me and your goal is to get a kickoff worst case scenario you try to get a kick off [Applause] they'll run it here with michael carter and he's brought down shy of the first down so that'll keep the clock rolling unless north carolina spends their time out third down and one but we're down to a half minute there's a first down catch that'll stop the clock deomi brown steps out 22 seconds to go in the half i think right now if i'm still long on north carolina i'm running something very similar play-wise like virginia tech is playing soft on the outsides they're not going to allow the ball to go over their head just try to get another five or six yard completion [Applause] soft off top again you can get an easy completion up top al's look for the end zone he's got a one on one and he drops it in to death for the touchdown wow [Applause] [Music] now [Music] [Applause] yes [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it's back up to a three-score lead for the heels they just gotten that quick little completion diamond brown up top and now it's just one on one him and nest this corner white watch when he gets to about the 35-yard line the little just stabbing to the ground right there stabbing to the ground freezes that defensive back and now it's one-on-one football downfield great job by howell again giving his guy an opportunity how about the athleticism to fight through that trip and to make that catch we had just seen that hitch route thrown before great job at diamie brown playing smart football kind of putting that foot in the ground getting that corner just settle his feet give him the chance to run by him that's the second deep shot touchdown that deomy brown has scored here in the first half and you know talking with phil longo their offensive coordinator and he said you know i was down at ole miss yeah and i've got aj brown and dj metcalf and i'm thinking i may never get a chance to coach a quiet receiver as good as those guys again and i'm heading up to chapel hill to coach the heels with mac brown and all of a sudden i see d'ami brown and i'm like whoa i've got another one that's elite company to put the army brown in and he is certainly living up to that praise in our game this afternoon i think the talking to phil longo you you mentioned aj brown hey where is dearmi brown where is he as a receiver with his growth and development he said the number one area he's grown in is setting up dbs with his routes that is exactly what we just saw in that touchdown i don't want to minimize it that little jab step that he puts at that defensive back is on purpose he had just run a six or seven yard route he puts that jab step with speed at that corner and got him to set up that is setting up the defensive back for the route that you want to run burmester to throw with 16 seconds to go in the half he wants to throw one downfield and he'll toss it away burmeister conservative down by three scores remember virginia tech won the toss and deferred their option to the third quarter so they will get the ball after halftime but now again in a 21-point hole [Music] timeout injured north carolina player and kyler mcmichael one of the corners for the heels is down north carolina already without stormed up today the starting corner on the opposite side as he was hurt in the boston college game last week well tonight our next ufc fight night main event number one ranked phantom weight contender marlon morris will square off against number four ranked corey sanhagen the prelims start at five eastern the main card at eight on espn plus in english and in spanish to get espn plus go to espnplus.com or download the espn app [Applause] so both of these teams suffering absences in their secondary as that is one of the two starting corners i was able to make the start for north carolina coming off the field mcmichael on the sidelines storm duck out there they also lost their starting true freshman nickel curious conley and of course we detailed earlier all the absences in the secondary for virginia tech as well er meister dangerous throw four seconds to go in the half not sure the philosophy right now what virginia tech is attempting just take it into halftime it's third and ten you're not nothing nothing good could happen to your football team here you're not gonna lateral a bunch at the end of the half you're not catching a hail mary just take it into halftime with a run and now it is a handoff and jalen holston will pick up about 11 yards and that will take us to the halftime break with north carolina on top 35 to 14. virginia tech starts the third quarter with the ball we'll see what they can do coming up after the break and a word from our abc stations kevin mark and booger they'll have the state farm halftime report [Music] [Music] welcome back to espn college football presented by playstation 5. and welcome back to the acc on espn just about set for the start of the second half virginia tech will have the football but they're down by 21 a late touchdown by north carolina before halftime extends the lead bobo shoes in here with dan olofsky dr jerry punch is in chapel hill as well or talk about the balance for north carolina offensively in the first half 186 yards through the air 186 yards on the ground i think they've got a lot of playmakers and we talk about balance and sometimes it's just about getting them touches and they've done a good job offensively formationing some things sim howe has been really good distributing the football and right now bob they're doing whatever they want virginia tech beat up defensively they're doing whatever they want to a virginia tech defense that right now is a little bit reeling the most points that virginia tech has allowed in a half since 2002 against miami and as we said through the air and on the ground sam howell 186 yards passing as we take a look at our pacific life game summary and when he has gone downtown it has been to the army brown i like that rhyme diamond brown downtown but just a really good job of how with his eyes confirming coverage we see two long balls diamond brown kind of making some contested catches now khalil herbert came into this game off a huge week last week and does he have a touchdown yes but he's been minimized a little bit in that run game i think virginia tech's got to stay committed to that try to slow this game down a little bit be very efficient with their drives back to brent hinden hooker to start off the second half at quarterback for virginia tech and a moment ago dr jerry punch caught up with matt brown some folks have said that your offense has started a little bit in the first half of the first two games but not today 35 points what do you like most about what you've seen see jerry they're relaxing they're they're enjoying playing instead of that burden they had on them for the first two weeks still dropped a couple of passes and should have had other first downs but uh i told them we can do better the second half but we're seeing a little bit more about what we can be if we'll just continue to play thanks bro thank you ended hooker for a couple of yards and doesn't that sound almost like a microcosm of what mac brown has now experienced since he's been back on the sideline at north carolina right like enjoy playing guys yeah have great have a great time with the experience it seems like he's trying to do that himself i think certainly even this year as well with everything going on you know trying to make sure that he's enjoying what he's having to do every single day getting to do every single day at work and being a part of not it rubs off on his kids as well third down and five for hendon hooker well protected he's gonna take a shot down the sideline under thrown incomplete trey turner the intended receiver but there's the flag [Applause] pass interference defense number one 15-yard penalty automatic first down you take the shot downfield to trey turner you see kyler mcmichael kind of search back for that football and i think there's just a little bit of a left-hand grab as turner goes up to make that catch how about the decision dan to go back to hendon hooker at quarterback i think this is where coaches can kind of get themselves into a little bit of an issue not having a very distinct plan or kind of expressed plan of what the decision making is going to be because sometimes they're like you know just in point they said it's going to be i don't know we'll go off of feel i feel would have told me to keep burmeister on the football field no gain for khalil herbert on first down you know i feel like virginia tech at least moved the football for the most part offensively with burmeister and i know they want to get hendon back on the field and get in his snaps but especially on this first drive such a big drive i would have i would have liked to see burmeister herbert flagged down he's about a yard shy of a first down if the play stands [Applause] illegal substitution defense more than 12 players on the field at the snap five yard penalty repeat second down [Applause] so that's the fast pace getting back to the line of scrimmage for virginia tech that traps a north carolina defender on the field again number one in number two both in action tonight on abc and espn you'll see clemson and alabama herbert a yard shy of a first down so without the penalty it would have been third down and one and that's exactly what we've got and again here's the tempo and there's a first down carry for khalil herber [Applause] i think virginia tech should stay with this you don't have to get super fancy right now like you've got something working here you just got 12 on the field two snaps to go you get a big run a conversion on third and one continue to play with that tempo and challenge the communication of north carolina defensively booker pulls it back flips one in the flat to mitchell and mitchell runs a man over he is a physical player at tight end we saw a pancake block in the first half that set up one of the touchdown runs for khalil herbert that time he pancaked attackers and they do a good job of kind of putting him in positions to play successfully you know like okay we'll put you in our block game we saw the handoff to him down in the red zone on a reverse okay now we'll bring the naked around and get him out in space like he's a really versatile player a lot like dalton keane that they had last year raheem blackshear spins for a first down and we have another opportunity to check in with dr jerry punch [Music] yeah guys chuck with justin fuente at halftime about the inconsistency of the options either either three and out or two long drives for a touchdown and how do you find the consistency he said we've got to come back on this field and develop some tempo and some rhythm we got to get to our rhythm as far as the run game it looks like what they're doing here early on a quarterback draw and hooker took a shot and he goes down then at the line of scrimmage by jaleel taylor i think it speaks to the trust that fuente has hooker i mentioned it this is a really big drive and they're doing a nice job of moving down the football field but the trust to put him in to start this second half you know this is that three by one formation you see those three receivers two two receivers in a tight end up at the top this is what they had their most success in first half running out of this three by one hooker i'll play action seam shot he's got trey turner and turner has the end zone for a virginia tech touchdown down on the play [Applause] thrown back at the line of scrimmage illegal shift offense two men in motion and never got set for one second five yard penalty second down so wipe away the touchdown on what really was a tough call yeah when both those guys move at the same time because what happened was trey turner came across the formation of motion and then they flipped the back on the other side when both of them are moving at the same time both of them need to get set for one second if it was just a motion guy he doesn't have to get set but since both of them moved at the same time that's what the penalty was tunnel screen and there's no tunnel there raheem blackshear dropped behind the line [Applause] another good read by jalil teller i mean taman fox just playing outside defensive end type of player kind of feels dara saw the tackle kind of moving out and goes i'm going to go blow this play off and now third team usually third down it's like okay here comes the blitz package out of jay bateman in the north this north carolina defense i think they might play a little bit soft here but if you're ending hooker you got to be thinking okay if i get eight or nine yards then we're potentially in field goal range [Applause] here comes the blitz a slip and a fall on the back shoulder throw to a wide open receiver it's the same play they hit in the first half you motion out that tight end you guess what pressure's coming he's got him on that rail that real wheel route up the sideline and hooker just misses him drake de lewis the tight end could not have been more wide open and that would have gotten them into field goal range at the very least hooker's thinking like hey you're gonna settle you're gonna kind of pause a little bit and the tight end kept going up the sideline according to justin puente they are in field goal range here's brian johnson to try what would be a career-high 55-yarder and it is online and it's good his previous career long 54 he betters that by a yard so obviously the coach knew his kicker and knew he had the leg for it virginia tech had seven taken off the board but they do put three back on [Applause] a missed opportunity to go dan will explain in a moment for virginia tech this could have easily been a drake dualius touchdown and ends up being three and also carolina's gonna bring the corner blitz right and what they're gonna do for this play virginia tech is they're gonna run a post at that receiver and then a kind of a rail shot to put this safety going over the top in the bind it's the perfect play call you guess the blitz the safety the receiver runs right at the safety now look that safety has closed his hips he is taking that receiver just throw the ball up the sideline if you're hendon hooker and it's a walk-in touchdown your coach just dialed up the perfect play versus the blitz you have to have to be able to hit that in that crucial moment their defense is looking for a stop now and michael carter begins this stride for north carolina with a gain of a couple that third and 19 miss makes me think i coach my kids flag football on saturday morning second play of the game to outdolled up an absolute gem we practiced it all night the kid that we called it for ran the wrong way i'm sitting there i'm throwing my dry erase board up in there i got to imagine that was fuente on the sidelines cut back run for carter he's two yard shot of a first down now just to lend perspective to your story the children that you are coaching or how old eight eight yeah i can see why you'd be losing your mind if an eight-year-old runs the wrong route jacob that's what you're not doing that that eight-year-old has to run the right route there i can't believe you left it in the game i'm looking at jacob i go jacob's the kid i go jacob what are you doing he goes i just i saw some guy running the other way so i ran that when i looked at him like yeah it's bad coaching i'd take that kid's scholarship away in a heartbeat the seas part easy third down pickup for javante williams boy third and three and he wasn't touched until he had picked up six or seven yards how about the left side of this offensive line just creating holes the zuda just kind of sitting back on that defensive tackle flowing over the top i said at the beginning of this week we all fall in love with these receivers i'm telling you the two backs carter and williams are fantastic players they're getting blown off the ball and it is a gain of about 14 yards doc as the virginia tech defense is struggling yeah we remind the folks just joining our telecast that we told you at the top of the show that virginia tech is down 15 players a day the bulk of those nine are on the defensive side and most of the defensive secondary and then the one guy they were going to depend on jamari connor got booted from the game due to our targeting call so the coverage are pretty bare defensively for the hokies yeah they are trying to patch it together especially on the back end as best they can shovel pass to javonte williams and he is inbounds and picking up yards to the red zone carrying tacklers down to the 16-yard line get the ball in the perimeter a little shovel pass from powell look at the blocking on the outside daz knew some fighting for him diamond brown fighting for him and then javonte williams again just good pace good vision cut back finisher as a runner is a complete football team offensively and this is going to be the challenge for virginia tech to rest this game and for teams moving forward how do you match up how do you stop all the talent especially on the perimeters here's carter after a 29-yard catch and run by javonte williams michael carver captured the drive with a 16-yard touchdown run [Music] how many teams in college football dan have this one-two combination of running backs i think they're the best in the country one two wise duo-wise because they're both very versatile how about the patience right there by carter like just the the spatial patience patience and then the ability to get back inside of that hole but they're smart they're tough they're good in protection they're confident they're selfless right you got to be selfless as well knowing some someone else might get a couple carries of yours six play touchdown drive and five of the six plays were runs and a shovel pass so it pretty easy on sam howe as michael carter he finds the end zone for the first time today studio update kevin nagani booger mcfarland how about the sec kyle trask three touchdowns so far today bogue against a m and he's making some easy throws nice over the shoulder where the receiver can catch it walk in the end zone second one for cadarius tony the gators up by four ellis it's a track meet terrace marshall keeps on winning miles brent is not the issue what about some defense baby uh beau pelini didn't make the trip 38-31 over lsu back to you guys well books bayou bengals are putting up some offensive numbers they need it they're in a shootout north carolina though looks unstoppable right now offensively against virginia tech we just saw a huge drive right those tailbacks getting the ball of tan carter and williams being dominant but first half is about these receivers formation into the boundary up top that's going to cause that safety to wander that way as well diami brown i created you all that space you go beat that corner a little stutter step to the out beautiful throw by sam howell how about the toe tap the back end line again fall into the boundary let's go motion no one runs with him put that defender in conflict go run to that space daz newsome this is a team that is very diverse it's very deep with their talent and you got to pay attention to everybody at the skill positions and hookers still in a quarterback for virginia tech play action to start this drive floats one up the scene tipped and hauled in with one hand by james mitchell he already has a touchdown on the ground and he's dragging tacklers all the way down to the red zone kind of living right that ball almost gets picked off by chapman how about the hand-eye coordination by mitchell tip it up track it down turn a bad play into a huge one for their offense and we have an injured player down from north carolina so we will step aside as they're looking at don chapman the safety the nba finals on abc rise together back in chapel hill virginia tech in the red zone don chapman cramped up for north carolina so he is on the sideline they'll run it with herbert he's down inside the 10-yard line before he's stood up about eight and a half it'll be second down and a long yard call it second and two jeremiah gimbel made the stop tempo for virginia tech hooker will keep it first and goal good job by virginia tech this drive right now of a lot of pre-snap motion some quarterback run obviously it's generated by that big play by mitchell this is that three by one formation that's been really effective running towards this gotta be quarterback run now with that motion there it is straight quarterback run and a touchdown for hendon hooker [Applause] great job using the motion that back's gonna come all the way out here you're gonna move remove somebody from the box right watch the defender go with them now that one extra guy's out you see the point of attack mitchell down block pull that guard beautiful job by mitchell getting up to the backer and hooker dipping right underneath 42-24 maybe it's not over yet as virginia tech will put their defense back out on the field hoping for a stop doc and indeed they are but we might want to explain to people why hinden hooker has not played thus far this year you know the young man was a red shirt junior expected to be the starter at quarterback for the hokies before the virginia game but then a routine screening procedure showed an anomaly something they said did not look normal so they decided in an abundance of precaution that's the word they used an abundance of precaution the medical staff opted to run some more tests they were able to find out it was simply a variation of normal he is okay was able to get back to practice last week and of course in the game for the first time this year here today as you said he was supposed to be the starting quarterback and braxton burmeister was supposed to weave in as well going back to the start of the season and hendon hooker last season after he took over as the starting quarterback for ryan willis started eight games and in the eight games that he started virginia tech averaged 36 yards a game and they'll try the surprise on side kick and see if they can steal a possession and it looks like they will [Applause] quincy patterson out there trying to take the ball back and johnson got it brian johnson executes it perfectly and a special team's surprise play for the hokies works the perfection what a great kick catch him off guard kick it to yourself look at the defender that front line takes one step back that ball goes 10 yards he catches it right at about 11 yards has to go 10 before he can touch it what a great job of calling that play and it always comes down to execution previously he's done a further review replay wants to make sure that it traveled 10 yards certainly looked like it did yeah come on that went 11 yards never wrong i hope it went 10 yards so the fifth year senior place kicker brian johnson looks like he is stealing a possession back for the hokies [Music] look at the hop that's really a one hopper huh i mean kicks it into the ground bounces up and then that one hop it looks like he touches it right at about 10 and a half 11 yards ball's got to get past that white line right there that 45 yard line looks like it does after further review ruling on the confirmed first down [Applause] so now virginia tech steals a possession and if they are able to score on this drive and pull within a couple of scores all of a sudden we might have a brand new football game [Applause] i feel like their offense has been relatively good today they've had some punch there's no question about it but hendon hooker kind of comes out this second half has that play to mitchell kind of spurs a drive and now you're feeling relatively good if you're virginia tech you feel like you've got some stuff in your run game that you can take advantage of especially going back towards 82 mitchell [Applause] herbert turned back after a gain of a couple let's check in with kevin we got an update from the cotton bowl spencer rattler back under center for oklahoma t.j pledger though the kerry going in 24-17 right now oklahoma in the third quarter back to you bob and dan [Music] so the red river rivalry is a one score game just when you thought north carolina might run away from virginia tech the hokies score a touchdown and are able to steal a possession with a surprise on side kick and in hooker fading one down the sideline broke it up well diagnosed by kyler mcmichael it's outstanding by mcmichael back to the quarterback okay looking back to the quarterback you're in man-to-man coverage now watch the left hand come out here watch the left hand pop right there that's the play right there play the ball and if you can't see the ball play the receiver's hands really good job by mick michael remember these third and longs that they've had some success with virginia tech it's been about motioning somebody and anticipating that pressure i think they really need to rely here comes that motion with mitchell is there pressure coming they're gonna run it with herbert he finds a cut back lane he's got a first down and more still on his feet khalil herbert looking for the pylon he's got it for the touchdown how great is this by virginia tech's offensive line go up now watch it cut right there beat that safety that's flying up field and just continue to attack downfield if you're herbert trey turner down there throwing a block what a play call [Music] brad cornelson and justin fuente in this virginia tech offense [Applause] 42-31 it's an 11-point game with five minutes to go in the third again that number 25 khalil herbert that is frank beamer's old 25 he has the honor of wearing it today it's making it stand up north carolina is going to pressure right you're going to see these two guys are gonna come off the edge all right watch those two defenders come off the edge and then this offensive line is just gonna come up to that second level once those blitzers come at the top and you shut off that penetration watch the glitches come now freeze you shut off that penetration look at this seam you've created you shut off that penetration you got a block here and a block here that creates that huge hole and let it ride herbert sees it the vision and again you beat that unblocked safety at about 10 or 12 yards that is about play calls third and eight roll the dice anticipate the pressure know that it's coming shut it off and you create a huge scene for your run game and again herbert where's the frank beamer 25 what i thought was awesome about the story of the honor of wearing coach beamer's old 25 you have to play special teams to get the honor of wearing that numbers we're not just going to give it to a star player on one side of the ball or the other because nobody in college football i think valued special teams as a head coach more than frank beamer you gotta earn it right and he does he does pardon me he has earned it and he is earning it again today well tomorrow night lebron of the lakers again will try and win the nba championship while jimmy butler and the heat again will try and hold them off and force a game seven it is game six nba countdown gets you ready at seven eastern with the tint just after 7 30 on abc and what a performance it has been throughout the entire bubble for lebron and jimmy buckets jimmy buckets is a dog he is i like it can virginia tech's defense now get a stop javonte williams is met by rachard ashby [Applause] i can't i i i'm really excited about that playing call from third down for virginia tech it's such good coaching by their offense we used we playing against like a coach like rex ryan you know he's gonna throw crazy pressures at you and i remember gary kubiak at one point being like listen we're just gonna call a run on third and long and see if we can hurt him and that's exactly what virginia tech offensively did there and now they've got some life in this third quarter and now they've forced a third down they breathed some life back into this defense as javonte williams has stopped after a gain of maybe three and a half so this is third down and a long four from the 31-yard line for north carolina and the challenge for virginia tech defensively is like okay third and four this could be a run this could be an rpo because the run game's been so good they'd be getting such good push so you got to be really good with your eyes if you're a defender for virginia tech don't just sell out to the run it's been a while since sam howell's gone downfield with the football and he has a drop here by michael carter and in an 11-point game virginia tech is about to get the ball back doesn't it just feel right now momentum a little bit you know like come out score a touchdown wait our coach decides to go on side kick you get it and then all of a sudden another gutsy play call on third down leads to a huge touchdown you get off the field defensively and to me the amazing part of that is twice in this game it has felt like it was over yes [Applause] this one returnable for tavion robinson but he gets cut down right away let's check in with kevin nagandi oh we got some developing situations here bob texas a m on fourth and two isaiah spiller the physicality and the touchdown right now a m is back in this game they lead 31-28 in colombia conor mcgelagh how about this tossing touchdowns left and right the tyler beatty and right now we're tied up at 38 apiece in colombia matt all over college football right now can't anybody get a stop points guess who just did virginia tech wow and let's see if hendon hooker can put together another scoring drive they'll hand one off to khalil herbert he'll pick up closer i just feel virginia tech like having some success running the football right now in these north carolina safeties camron kelly chapman they're getting nosy this you're getting close to a point where a ball is going over your head on a play-action pass there is the play action hooker wanted to go downfield with it instead he'll tuck it under and run for a first down and protect the football [Applause] surprise he doesn't throw it he's got a big post over the top listen if you don't see it if it's not there it's a play call early in this drive i love the decision by hooker coach i didn't see it all right then tuck it go get a first down and give us a new opportunity to call plays [Applause] herbert tries to turn the corner and does submarines out to the 45-yard line i gotta be honest i didn't know james mitchell was this good of a blocker right side of the screen right right there look at him start to turn turn turn i mean we've mentioned a couple times today four or five times how good of a blocker he's a really good pass catcher usually you don't see that you know the pass catching tight end still be willing and able to go be a part of the blocking he's been impressive as a blocker today [Music] [Applause] jet sweep raheem blackshear he's got another virginia tech first down as they have crossed the 50. [Music] twice in this game virginia tech was down by three touchdowns 21 to nothing blitzed right off the opening jump and then when they cut it to 21-14 north carolina came back with a couple of scores and made it 35-14 and yet they have continued to counterpunch an answer and they're driving to try and make this a one score game herbert to the 44-yard line a gain of three yeah i'd even say this we came onto the show today and we talked about everything they've overcome and how it's impressed how impressive it was that they just played the games let alone look good and two and up me right now just impression watch i don't even care what happens the rest of this game i'm so impressed with virginia tech the fight the commitment the leadership the not giving up they could have quit and had a ton of excuses and they haven't done it yet play action hooker dumps one two mitchell in the flat makes a man miss and lowers the boom on cam ron kelly and picks up another first down james mitchell making himself some money today watch right side of your screen okay now ice to the quarterback give me the ball all right now go make a play in space gamel you can't get me down finish it james mitchell's earnest out some money today to become a big time player for this offense virginia tech down at one point 42-17 but they've cut the lead to 42-31 what might be the final play of the third quarter play action for hooker that ball batted down at the line patrice renee coming on a corner blitz was able to knock it down it'll be second down at 10. up top number five come in okay this is great cornerback play can't get home ball's going to come out quickly make sure you bat it down blitzers you're not just running to a blind space still have your awareness really good job by the senior renee of understanding i'm not getting home let me still impact the play [Applause] a step back for hooker down the sideline wide open tabion robinson touchdown virginia tech will go for two to try and make this a three-point game [Applause] the hokies to try to pull within a field goal and this blown dead before they can snap the ball looks like a timeout was called on defense by north carolina time out north carolina how about this playing call though here's that three by one formation they're gonna run everyone this way tailback's gonna come with it this way hooker is gonna tuck the ball and run this way and then they're gonna have a jump step by here this receiver robinson is gonna fake like he's gonna block and go down the field watch everybody react here comes the run freeze it and then look at those defenders you think it's run you think it's run and robinson's just going to sneak down that seam let it ride and then watch the patience be boring in that hole don't run to that safety great ball by hooker to hold them up and then touch down hokies really good play design also taking advantage of your quarterback is a weapon right let me show you quarterback run everybody sell flow that way bad eyes by carolina's defense great play call we've seen a lot of really creative terrific played design yeah by both of these teams today i mean you have to you think when both teams are over 400 yards of total offense but trying to create those match-ups to space that you've been illustrating all day yeah i mean football football's about space right now and it's about trying to just attack certain people and then so when you get a corner that's out there and he goes okay i got a receiver here but now i have flow with the running back flow with the quarterback and he's tucked the ball i'm thinking run a two-point try for the hokies hooker to the goal not and that's broken up so virginia tech has cut the lead down to five and boy the response after response led by hendon hooker beautiful job on that quarterback draw how about the huntside kick not only kicking it but getting it yourself herbert again third down anticipate the blitz put great vision and then just kind of this never say die attitude i'm not gonna quit i'm gonna try and go find that pylon and then this beautiful play call again the fake quarterback ron the great throw to robinson who finishes as well virginia tech came out of this second half saying we're going to make this a four-quarter football game and they did that in 15 minutes and you have to think with the last four possessions this is hendon hooker's game the rest of the way well you know i mean we came out of the second half i said i would have played birdmaster swinging and miss on that one uh that's why i'm up here and fuente's down there but i think that he's given them the ability to throw the football downfield they've got some big plays in their pass game and probably just a little bit more comfort in their offense you know we they had scored their touchdown before and they he just walked over to the sideline and uh had great leadership going over to his teammates encouraging them telling them there's plenty of game left and he was right michael carter out to about the 25-yard line on the return and again last season hendon hooker averaged about 14 points per game more running the offense that when he did not play and now it goes back to sam howe who was nearly flawless in the first half but he really hasn't had an opportunity to open it up much in the second half two throws in the second half that i mean that is incredible you want to kind of point to something that's been a huge kind of story of this second half north carolina hasn't had the football they just haven't had the football and sam howell is one for two and one of those drops is a third down drop by michael carter in time of possession a 10 minute advantage for virginia tech and a one-yard gain on first down [Applause] devonta williams brought down to in the third quarter what a comeback by virginia tech as michael carter made a big play earlier but virginia tech has responded he'll come back after this message and a word from our abc stations justin fuentes hokies have looked dead multiple times against mack brown's unc heels and yet here we start the fourth quarter with north carolina facing second down and 10 in a five-point game they'll run it with javonte williams he'll be three yards short of the first down last season no team was better in the acc only two teams were better in all of fbs in terms of fourth quarter scoring advantage a dominant performance last year by north carolina and this year already they are outscoring their opponents 23-6 in the fourth quarter we'll see what happens today i mean that gives you comfort you know that gives you comfort as a player you know where you're like okay i've been in this situation i know how to operate i know how to think i know how to handle the pressure powell sideways pass michael carter gets a block in a first down i've been so impressed by watching the right side of the screen in the blocking by daz newsome in the slot right there look at him get on that outfit defenders outside edge and just allow carter continue to fight i've been really impressed by those wide receivers of carolina blocking talking to football coaches all these years it's amazing how excited they get when they talk about wide receivers that block yeah it's just one of those things that every coach loves michael carter turns the corner breaks a tackle first down and more let's check in with kevin nagandi well let's go to the cotton bowl again with an update you know no seth mcgowan so depleted backfield for oklahoma t.j pledger has been the storyline in the third quarter his second touchdown there 31-7 meanwhile we getting you ready 45 minutes away from iowa state taking on texas tech and brock purdy in control in that big 12 2-0 so far it has been a roller coaster in the big 12 since the start of the season [Applause] williams he gets to the edge again steps out of bounds with a gain of 20 more yards and i think they'll mark them out at the 12-yard line so it'll be first and ten again for caroline look at the right side of the screen again watch daz newsom come in he's coming he's coming there he is watch his feet running we listen bob you had talked about you know coaches getting excited for receivers that blocked you know why because it's selfish come out in your virginia tech player because they're not brought into block and they're not paid to block at the nfl it's selfless j.r walker another defensive back down for virginia tech we'll step aside we return with our pacific life game summary and the overall game summary between virginia tech and north carolina is north carolina keeps on taking big leads and virginia tech keeps on coming back 20 unanswered to end the third quarter now they're looking for a red zone stop sam howe first and 10 at the 12. play action out on the edge broken tackle gaz newsom to the power touchdown just an rpo like we saw all first half that nickel blitzes off new some okay now give me here give me a place to throw that football the corner tries to knife inside gandy brown gets a piece and now it's just effort now it's just effort and fight to get into that end zone daz newsom is doing everything for this football team today just a great player who's got great toughness quicks out of that slot but just that just the will to go make the play [Music] i mean that's that's that's exactly what phil longo wants like hey man that's not a great play design they didn't just draw something up in the lab right there it was just like our guy's really good if their guy leaves him alone throw him the football we recruited him for a reason go make a play pretty simple offense get the ball to the guy that's really good i'm telling you man it ain't that hard that's dan orlowski i'm bob schuzin dr jerry punch on the sidelines in chapel hill and this is an important extra point to take the lead up to 12. and now it will be two touchdowns that virginia tech will need an offensive explosion between these two teams 528 total yards for north carolina [Music] home of the college football playoff football on abc is presented by playstation 5. play has no limits and in part by pacific life more than 150 years strong trust in your tomorrow all of the really cute faces that you see right there in the middle are mac brown's grandchildren sitting in between julius peppers down on the left mitchell trubisky over on the right he saw giovanni bernard we were talking to matt brown he said yeah my grandkids the cutouts will be sitting next to mitchell trubisky they have no idea who mitchell trubisky is but my granddaughters will be sitting right next to him hopefully they're off twitter as we check in with bob kevin on the acc network nc state naleen mcneal making all the defensive lineman problems let's go big fella honey pick him up one two a big man touchdown 62 320 pounds wearing the number 29 with pride nc state up 31-14 over virginia i haven't heard excitement in booger's voice like that in years i mean goodness bob because he hasn't seen defense at lsu in the last seven look at what lsu is doing today you're probably right it's like arena football in that game as well and it looks like a timeout will be called by hendon hooker some confusion and virginia tech loses a timeout here with the clock stopped and see if that timeout becomes something they need a little bit later on well we got a heck of a quarterback matchup tonight the eric king and trevor lawrence square off number one meets number seven at 7 30 eastern on abc saturday night football it'll be miami taking on clemson i think dr king's made a difference for the kings i think he's closed you know where the talent gap might be when really talking about some of the better teams not on the acc but in the country like i think he closes that gap for them he's a perfect fit for rhett lashley's offense and just kind of using him as a dual threat weapon we're playing a different animal tonight with clemson well again it's one of those litmus test games yes good on both of you and how good is the rest of the acc because all of these teams now being ranked like north carolina in the top ten and breaking tackles is khalil herbert he's got a first down but until one of these other teams like in notre dame like a miami like a north carolina like a virginia tech goes out there and actually goes toe to toe with clemson sure you wonder if it's for real yeah of course i mean clemson's kind of in a class of their own right now but i think what's happening is we're starting to see the acc with recruiting with player development you know virginia tech's got 33 wins since pointless out there that second best in the conference behind clemson's there's a really good team as well a rollout for hooker cuts the field in half and short hops it poor trey turner this season notre dame counts as an acc team because they're playing an acc schedule we've got five teams all ranked inside the top 20. four of them ranked inside the top ten and none have lost yet something will give between number one and number seven tonight yeah i think you're seeing depth i think you're seeing that it's not necessarily just a top-heavy conference but there's depth within this conference with a bunch of good football teams [Applause] hooker out of the pocket buying time and throws it away virginia tech plays clemson second to last game of the season and if north carolina is going to play clemson it would have to come in the acc title game as they are not on their regular season schedule this is a fascinating third down for virginia tech offensively because i've talked all game that north carolina's this pressure defense last third downs that virginia tech has seen it they've heard it they missed the wheel route up the sidelines but then they had that long run be very interesting to see if north carolina just decides you know what we're going to play some man coverage and we're not going to try to get too fancy and expose ourselves you got to try to find a match up if you're heading hooker that you like four-man rush hooker the pocket collapses and down he goes that time the four-man rush got there taman fox helped out on the pressure by tamari fox the fox brothers arrived at the quarterback that's exactly what they do they play some man pressure in the fox brothers just effort to get around that hendon hooker's got to hold the ball for just a little bit longer because of that sticky coverage and north carolina finally gets off the field in the second half that is the first sack of the game for north carolina tamari enjoyed that one [Applause] there catches made by jazz newsom the defense steps up and makes a play for north carolina and stops a rolling virginia tech offense [Music] [Applause] ramon and tamari fox sandwich the quarterback hendon hooker a moment ago and it's a stop on defense for north carolina [Music] that gets the football back to sam howell another swing pass into the left flat this time javonte williams gets a couple of blocks and it's about 15 more yards for the north carolina offense they've got impact players on both sides of the ball that are related because not only the fox brothers on defense but the ami and joffrey brown that's a dangerous pair of wide receivers on the offensive side of the ball it's good recruiting it's two one parents you know we'll take both of them well it certainly speaks to how much fun the older brothers have and when the other younger brother follows them a couple of years later as dearmi brown has had a big day three catches 86 yards and a couple of touchdowns here's michael carter to the 40-yard line picks up three let's check in with kevin bob it's all about the offense this afternoon after kyle trask four touchdown and here's texas a m and kellen monde caleb chapman airing it out 51 yards 38 all right now kyle field missouri driving down three to lsu back to you guys wow a shootout between a m and the gators and right now with 10 minutes to go in our game virginia tech's trying to get a stop defensively because they'd love to turn this game into that type of a close one with a few minutes to go how about north carolina wearing the clock down here michael carter into the secondary again watch the safety 34 go across the screen he's following that tight end and he's supposed to be there to fill on that block tisdale follows that tight end when that ball gets snapped and that creates that huge seam and i like this out of north carolina right we've we've had a couple games this year already we go okay this team is an offensive tempo team at what point do you start to go we're we got to we got to work the clock here a little bit and then right around 10 minutes into this fourth quarter 12 point lead they are now wearing out this clock they've got 550 yards of offense and as you saw record-setting points against a ranked team and against virginia tech now they'll take a shot wide open to yami brown untouched flag down did he push off the army brown may have created the space that made him as wide open as he was offense number two 15-yard penalty repeat first down [Applause] it's just gonna be a go route up top watch the right arm fight hand fight stab push off i could argue that strong held on to it as well now that's a good stab that's a fair call there's definitely a little pull dorian strong that corner grabs onto that arm a little bit but pi their separation what caused the separation it's that right arm punch from the army brown [Applause] burst at 25 michael carter are you kidding me are you kidding a me call on first and 25 for north carolina as michael carter takes it to the the end zone 62 yards another north carolina touchdown a couple of things about this play that make it happen the tight end is going to go across watch 34 follow him okay and then matheny you're going to be the guy that's driving down replacing 34 lead matheny you are there make that play you're dropped right down in that box where that ball is gonna get run strictly for that play the tight end takes tisdale out you gotta replace and make that tackle great job by michael carter running away tyler matheny is a walk-on safety third stringer but we talked about all of the covid related absences and the injuries and the secondary for virginia tech divine diablo normally starts at that spot backed up by tyree rogers they're both out so that's a walk-on trying to stay with michael carter not gonna happen [Music] what a performance for north carolina at all of their skill position spots but especially on the ground the heels have 364 yards rushing you got that many yards both of your running backs are going to be having career days and michael carter 214 yards that is a career high will herbert on the run and he gets stood up at about the 24-yard line another update with kevin dugandy by reminding our audience after our game in chapel hill alan bowman expected to start good sign for the texas tech offense as they are in ames getting ready for iowa state meanwhile a developing situation in columbia nick o'hay mizzou and that offense 45 points lsu playing defense like dan avlowski played quarterback bad i cannot wait first of all i cannot wait to see booger after that comment i'ma remember that one when you go is this a gimme from four feet i'm like nope need to see it and i cannot wait to see marcus spears swing pass to blackshear i guess i'm wondering what was inaccurate about that comment from booger oh nice you're jumping on board too huh just because we're in the same room together okay marked men next time i play golf with you nothing good i need to see it go down into the cup every time booger if you're listening right now i would be honored to be your partner in a nassau against dan orlowski any day black sheer that's a first down but virginia tech they're gonna have to play with all the tempo we've seen so far today as the ball got taken away at least according to north carolina but the officials are going to rule it down as virginia tech needs to pile up some points in the last eight minutes [Applause] trick play the reverse and the pass to hendon hooker and he dodges tacklers and gets to the 45-yard line of north carolina davion robinson on the reverse from turner found hooker wide open this is great little handoff pitch it back to tavion robinson the lefty you never know when a lefty is going to pop up and a great little throw to hendon hooker listen i just love that virginia tech is continuing to fight and continuing to believe that there's a chance they're gonna win this football game if they just continue to strive for the next play although they can't afford too much let's look over to the sideline and let the play clock wind all the way down their defense can't get a stop down 56-37 they have to maximize every second they've got on the clock and here they snap it with two seconds on the play clock and run a dive to blackshear that's a good point that's a really good point is like we we know we want to try to get to ideal plays and points are paramount as well but is it worth to try to get 15 yards in 30 seconds off the clock you know like you've got to be in two minute tempo right now get as quickly to the ball as you can and that ball should be getting snapped before 30 seconds gets on the play clock this is too much time getting taken off this clock [Applause] cut back run khalil herbert close to a first down like they should be running up the line of scrimmage it's third and less than one like let's run up to the line of scrimmage get a first down clock will stop and then maybe we can get into taking a shot or something like that it is a first down run as herbert will stop the clock check that i will keep the clock rolling as they were given a first down on the last play and now we have an injured player for north carolina [Applause] another update from kevin nagandi bob here we go florida they had the ball 38 all malik davis and he fumbles with less than four minutes to go texas a m recovers and how about seth small biggest kick of the aggie season big man on campus what a win for kellen monde and jimbo fisher texas a m knocks off florida 41-38 mark and i minding our own business here on the set cook says hi boy that is some tough loss for the gators as we take a look at some games that are still to come today of course leading up to the big one at 7 30 between miami and clemson alabama going up against lane kip and ole miss that's your menu tamari fox by the way was the injured tar heel off the field and quarterback draw for hendon hooker he is spun forward right to the first down line again five and a half minutes to go he gets the first down so that stops the clock just for the moment but now it starts again and hendon hooker and the virginia tech offense back at the line of scrimmage [Applause] play action hooker up the scene he's got a hook up he's got a touchdown with james mitchell with 5 20 to go you have to go for two here if you are virginia tech and their offense will do just that [Applause] really good play call using that motion to get eyes of the defenders in the wrong way and of course james mitchell catches a touchdown last time they went for two was that pig that pick play where they try to get a rub one way or the other that bunch up top right now to try to pull within 11. back shoulder throw incomplete so they're still down needing two touchdowns now with 5 20 to go just watch two chapman here as the motion comes this way mitchell's going to sneak right behind him chapman's going to have his eyes in the backfield and that reverse look at mitchell sneak right behind him hendon hooker an aggressive throw really good job by mitchell just kind of being patient in that crosser and then here's this one step fade trying to get tavion robinson the ball actually pretty good ball placement just would love to see robinson just go fully extended to go make that catch [Music] now the last time that we were in a spot where an onside kick may have been called for they stole one brian johnson with a surprise on side kick down by two touchdowns with 5 20 to go if you're north carolina i would think you'd have to have your hands team out there yes expecting it on side yes it's on virginia tech i don't really think that i'm kicking the ball deep i'm giving up 11 yards of play like i'm not going okay i feel confident that we can go make that play now part of it is too is how good do you feel with brian johnson in his own previous play illegal substitution more than 12 players on the field at the snap half a distance to the goal you retry wow the officials just dropped a flag as they determined that the defense had too many players on the field and they just figured that out on the two-point try so now virginia tech will have another opportunity to try again got six guys across the line of scrimmage right here [Music] that's 12. great job by the officials [Music] so the hokies will get a chance off of a late recognition that that there were 12 on the field for north carolina to again make this an 11-point game [Music] okay so we've seen the potential rub route we've seen a one-on-one one route and hooker low snap quarterback run he's got it so hendon hooker gets the two and north carolina costs themselves a pair having too many on the field is there still hope in this game for virginia tech great job great job by hooker following that tight end [Music] a shootout between north carolina and virginia tech 56-45 the tar heels have the lead now dan normally if i would tell you in a vacuum an 11-point game with five minutes and 20 seconds to go would you kick the ball deep you probably do yes but virginia tech can't stop correct that's why yeah i think it's a great point bob normally you kick it deep but right now you try to try an onside kick to try to get the ball back and there is the attempt it is loose and covered up well now you have to send your defense out there and i would think take risks and just send numbers to the line of scrimmage kind of get the hop that you want great job by trey morrison being there how are you dialing up your defense here if you're virginia tech to do what maybe a risk take just to try and get the football back and get a stop yeah i i think that north carolina is still going to go run their offense and that's had a ton of success doing the run pass option the rpo so i don't think zone defense is your answer like you got to play some man-to-man coverage force a difficult throw in difficult catches and go stop the run quarterback run beautifully done by sam howell he is loose to the sideline well that time all the numbers went after the fake to javonte williams here's another check in with kevin nagandi bob iowa states breese hall leads the big 12 in rushing touchdowns plenty of offense in front of us cyclones facing texas tech that game will begin on espn news then we'll rejoin on abc after our game in chapel hill updating you right now on the sec network missouri up by four over lsu the tigers of lsu driving though we'll keep you up to date good play call by north carolina there giving sam howard the opportunity to tuck it and run [Applause] javonte williams five yards four and a half minutes to go i think if you're virginia tech too like you're telling your defense two things we're going to do some run blitzes difference between pass blitz and run bits punch out the football see if you could pop that ball out if one of the backs carter williams are kind of carrying it loosely jermaine waller is down so the clock stops at least for the moment with an injured virginia tech player and dr jerry punch is with us as well doc yeah guys let's check in with the fact that justin fuente is talking about how you deal with adversity all the stress they've gone through this year with the covet outages etcetera with players and he says that early in the year he had a navy seal come talk to the team after the talk he said he pulled the navy seal aside said i went all fanboy on him i wanted to know how you handle all the training all the mental and physical stress and toughness of stamina of what you have to do to be a navy seal sleep deprivation all that the navy still said this he said you don't worry about tomorrow or the next day or next week in your training you do everything you have to do to get this event and be able to get the breakfast and then after you get to breakfast you do everything you have to do to make it to lunch and you do that thing one meal at a time but from that point on justin fuente said our toughness is doing what we have to do every day just to get to breakfast and then to lunch he said that's how we deal with stress up in hokey land [Applause] good coaching right i mean it's you're giving your kids analogies imagery that they can kind of use in their every day as well to kind of not only help them as football players but off the field as well i used to have coaches all the time like hey when you look into a forest and you're trying to chop a tree you're not trying to look through the whole forest find one tree and knock it down type thing so really good interaction with the navy seal to give your kids the ability to kind of get through some difficult times north carolina milking as much clock as they can and it's another first down for javonte williams i don't think you're thinking timeouts just yet if you're virginia tech you only have two left remember they started the second half and used one if you get a first down stop and it gets the second and ten second to nine something like that then i think you pop your timeout [Applause] you to keep your eyes on the quarterback this you playing man-to-man coverage defense selling out you've got to make sure that you keep your eyes on a keeper quarterback run they'll play power football here with javonte williams and now will virginia tech call a timeout they probably should with 301 to go and yes second time out of the half they will call a timeout step aside for 30 seconds 301 to go bobble shoes and dan orlowski dr jerry punch bringing you north carolina and virginia tech a top 10 team for north carolina a top 20 team for virginia tech and two teams that have now combined on over 1100 yards of offense and over 100 points on the scoreboard second down and six that's virginia tech desperate to get a stop javonte williams won't let them have it down to the 13-yard line it's another first down and only one timeout left for the hokies i think a lot of people came into this game really nationally going okay north carolina are you for real like are you legit i would actually argue that i've learned more about virginia tech today with all due respect to north carolina you guys have been amazing today you're a really really good football team but for what virginia tech has had to handle and to have two minutes and 30 seconds left in the game and still somewhat be in this game to continue to fight like that is so impressive for their leadership with justin fuente for their whole program and further kids that have been thrust into okay you don't know if you're gonna play you don't know we don't know who's playing i've learned so much and gained so much respect for virginia tech sam howell spends a time out for north carolina with the play clock winding down another update with kevin nagandi a programming note here iowa state's tight end charlie kohler ready for texas tech this game will begin on espn then we'll rejoin it on abc after a game in chapel hill now here's the update from columbia miles brennan on fourth down and it is deflected by joshua bledsoe and mizzou with the stunner lsu 1-2 for the first time since 1994 the final 45-41 missouri mcfarlands kevin the smile on dan orlowski's face right now is much wider than any yukon quarterback's smile deserves to be yeah god works book based results take your shot now you're one and two still can't break 85 on the golf course either oh boy that is just another gut punch [Applause] virginia tech virginia temperatures called their final timeout with the clock stopped 30 second timeout that's the end of the game if you're virginia tech now you've got no timeouts left not that they were stopping north carolina anyway this is the first time in the history of north carolina's program that they've got two running backs to go over 150 yards at the same game yeah big time carter's kind of started it with a little bit of a power game get that backside guard how about the vision and then again you stretch you stretch cut back get those linebackers to overflow quick feet through the hole how about this one okay you leave 34 unblock defender you're not good enough i'm too good speed to stretch to the edge and then home run ability [Applause] outstanding tailback michael carter the senior from florida how many touches how many touches can you get him that's going to be a challenge for this offense moving forward because he's a versatile player a doc walker watchlist participant added element to this offense they'll run it again with javonte williams and really north carolina at this point could take a knee they could take the clock all the way down to about a minute and a half to go if they just kill maybe seven or eight extra seconds with a couple of meal downs they can go victory formation at this point because virginia tech called their last time out with the clock stopped yeah but you know why coaches are weird because they don't want the kneel down to be a negative yard i've had coaches say that don't take a knee four yards off of our overall yardage total i think the yardage total today is gonna work out for carolina as that is a very rare play for zero or minus yards for their offense they have run 64 now 65 plays in the game they're averaging 10 and a half yards per play today i mean snap the ball and it's a north carolina first down i mean think about it if you're virginia tech you have 500 yards of offense you're 50 on third down which is outstanding you don't turn the football over you win the time of possession and you were never even in control of the football game it just speaks to how explosive north carolina was offensively [Applause] [Music] [Applause] will today block blind down as far as they can second timeout and call their final timeout before third down with 51 seconds to go [Applause] but for the tar heels again they don't have clemson on their schedule but it doesn't mean they don't have teams lurking out there that could be huge because they've got two opponents that right now are ranked in the top seven that are back to back towards the end of the season right around thanksgiving huh it's gonna get really interesting i mean i think they'll be favored in every game up until then yeah no question yeah and we'll see what happens with notre dame in miami over the next six weeks or so seven weeks but [Music] that'll be an interesting thanksgiving week for the target and next saturday on espn you will see their game against florida state [Applause] [Music] so mack brown now will put his team in victory formation as sam howe will kill as much time as he can and there's about a five-second differential so on fourth down if sam how just goes back runs around a little bit that'll end the game you think mack brown's having some fun now we talked to him yesterday boy he said really my entire goal now is to do and he was very honest what i did not allow myself to do when i was at texas and that is have fun enjoy it not worry too much and let the kids have fun and have this the overall spirit of our program not the weight of the world on our shoulders it's hard to not have that happen in austin it's a different vibe at chapel hill certainly from a football standpoint but he's accomplishing his goal yeah and i also give him credit because he also was very blunt and honest saying i know that i know that i'm a little bit in a different place with my career than some other coaches who can't necessarily do that i don't like this well kind of holly field max holly field gave a little shot to sam howell after hal had taken a knee and now you don't want to see an ugly end to this game and the coaches are out there trying to separate the two sides couple of unsportsmanlike conduct flags it looks like have been thrown on virginia tech with only one second to go and i think some sometimes defenders think the quarterback is trying to be disrespectful there well think about this if north carolina wanted to be disrespectful or they would have been trying to score right he's just trying to burn time looking for up top holly field this is north carolina trying to not run the score up on virginia tech if mac brown and the heels wanted to try and add another seven points on the board just to run the score up they easily could have and yet they're trying to take a knee to end the game and really do the right thing no i agree and i and sometimes again defenders think the quarterback is trying to show off he's just trying to take four or five seconds off the clock and so then i ever have to take another snap i get it emotions are high hollyfield's a really good player and i guess if you're the virginia tech defense and you've got 661 yards yeah after the play on enforcement like conduct number four virginia tech that is his first unsportsmanlike of the game half the distance to the goal it will be first and ten for virginia tech also after the play unsportsmanlike conduct number 23 virginia tech that is his first unsportsmanlike still first down virginia tech [Applause] so the hokies offense will run one play and north carolina will celebrate three wins to start off the season they played their first game on september 12th against syracuse and one going away and had to wait three weeks to play boston college last week they had charlotte on their schedule and that was a coveted cancellation as they had a rollercoaster ride just to be able to get back on the field to play last week and talking to phil longo the offensive coordinator it's pretty telling he said look it was just great to be back on the field last week getting ready for a game his words were i was elated to finally just get back onto a practice field the day after the game and i thought that was really cool like it was it was about just being out there working with the kids being part of the football routine i think one of the things that stands out about this north carolina program and their coaching staff they really love what they're doing virginia tech ends at 56 to 45 is the final north carolina over the hokies after a quick break here on abc texas tech takes on iowa state in ames for dan arlovsky and dr jerry punch i'm bob schussen thanks for watching
