the becker bk7 is an amazing platform for a mid-weight survival knife [Music] [Music] so in this video we're not only gonna discuss what the bk7 can do and whether or not it's the right mid-late survival knife for you but how to build the ultimate becquer beat k7 with some extra aftermarket pieces so let's go ahead and get to it and show you what this blade can do and what these aftermarket parts can help augment this design alright so right out of the gate let's go ahead and roll in some beautiful blade footage testing footage this is my second bk7 had one a long time ago use it for a while treated it off to get other blades and now this one is back in the collection and I am so glad that it is and so I'm gonna want really as I roll in some of this b-roll and just you know talk about first off why would you purchase a bk7 and why would you want to trick it out the main thing is that the bk7 I believe should always be in like the top three best mid weight survival knives and I say mid weight because it's you can use you know I survived 18 I if you use a Mora to survive if you have to and you can use you know big machetes se hun glasses be canines you know tops whatever power Eagles I mean you name the the knife you can use these big huge massive blades for survival knives you can use a little tiny knives for survival knives but I really believe for me personally a survival knife comes in at under a pound and this guy weighs in at thirteen point six ounces the knife itself it's usually has between minimum five inches maximum about seven seven and a half inches in this run falls in right at 7 inches blade length and then usually is a form of high carbon steel you can have super Steel's you can have stainless steels for survival knives but I like high carbons a lot just cuz they're very easy to work with they're really tough and durable so that's why this night particularly falls into that category for me of a mid-weight survival knife it's not heavy duty it's not lightweight and is really kind of a do-everything knife it's designed to be a jack-of-all-trades knife or you can do like chopping with it you do like hacking limbing to fall a few small trees that are about you know the width of your maybe bicep you know if you have to you can baton with it in baton pretty decent size logs if need be do self defense if you had two against an animal or another you know person whatever it may be and then also be able to do finer you know woods craft feather stick making making a few notches you know food prep if you had to all of that it'll do all of those things well it won't do any of those things great and it won't suck in any of those things but it will do all of those things well and the k-bar Becker bk7 really hits all of those capabilities and that's why first off out of the gate you would even want to look at it Becker bk7 in general and we will be running up the SE six tricked out as well as the Jara's Tarak in just a little bit to give you some competitive options for your consideration when you are thinking about those mid wheat survival knives but let's go back to the bk7 itself and break down that knife first before we do this comparison so now with that said though it's not a perfect system right out of the gate there are some things that right away you would want to trick out upgrade and tweak just because it's trying to give you as much as possible and still stay under a hundred dollars these usually would go between eighty and ninety dollars I'll have links in description below for all this stuff over the blade HQ over to Amazon as well as AZ well key for the sheath and all that stuff that we're about to look at here in just a little bit and we really appreciate it when you guys do use those hyperlinks helps us out a ton when you guys use those hyperlinks to all the stuff that we offer to you below but so they're trying to hit a good price point usa-made 1095 Crowe van high carbon steel steel gray steel without you know with it so they had to cut some corners basically and so the things right out of the gate for me that have to be tweaked on a BK seven or the handles the slick her ivory handles they're very ergonomic but they give you zero traction you got to do something with those who look at the what I did with this particular model so now if you've been following both channel for a while I have several becker knives I've tricked them out in many different ways of stripped off coatings I've done my car to handle scales of Dayton cottage cheese all kinds of different stuff and you could see people doing all kinds of crazy things and that's another nice thing about Becker's in general you can mod the heck out of them you can strip them you can remove the thumb ramp if you want and grind that down there's so many different things this is just one of many takes that you can do and this is probably one of the simplest and cheapest ways that you can tweak out and really get a bk7 running like it should and really be pleased with the knife so what I use and decide to go with instead of micarta which I've done in the past I'm both my backer bk2 and became 9 I decided to go g10 and I Scott decided to go with the Z g10 grips these grips will go for about 55 to 60 dollars and what's different about these than say micarta are twofold one no moisture will be able to penetrate the g10 micarta gets grippier the wetter it gets which is really nice and there's nothing wrong with that I love my cart on many many many knives but I decided to go g10 just to go with a little bit of a different flavor and for those of you who are maybe using this in really high humid environments really wet conditions a lot of time or maybe gonna use this as a hunting knife or you know a lot lots of wet around this might be a great option for you so that it doesn't penetrate into the micarta and make the knife heavier it will absorb that more you may start to get rust underneath the handle there's g10 will help to just combat some of that so that's really nice now with these VZ grips what they have done is kind of giving you a little bit of texturing here in the front end and in the back pommel area but what they have done is giving you really heavy traction here in the middle just to give you a little example of that so this is gonna be a pretty heavy traction pattern and then giving you a viously better grip than the original driver II handle scales did out here out here and then along the back spines there was just a little bit of ribbing so I really liked it so it's really good giving you medium texture all the way around and then heavy texture kind of in the center and so I really like that filling out my hands really well it's a really nice other thing with becker products is that all of the larger ones you know in the BK to be k7b k9 you know all of those are all gonna have the exact same handle scales so these handle scales will fit on any of those larger blades so it's giving you all the same dimensions it will be a little bit heavier so you're gonna get a little bit more back handle weight than with just the driver ease because it is denser than the original not by much maybe by the ounce or two will it add to the weight of the knife but I actually kind of like that and I just decided to make it easy and not strip the coating I've stripped the coating off of one of my other Becker's the BK 16 and that was a really fun project I just didn't see a need for it you can absolutely do that strip it off and then and I have some videos on that and I'll try and throw those in the description below then you can Bettina with different things you know to give it just a cool really personal feel if you wish to do that but I really like those and it's a different feel than micarta all right next up is the sheath as I said earlier with that nylon sheath got to be replaced I like high dex over leather there's nothing wrong with leather but kudex seems to hold up a little bit longer you never have any worry about accidentally cutting the the leather or anything like that and it's just a little bit more my flavor for most knives and particularly with this becker designed now this is an easy well key Kydex sheath we are gonna have links in the description below they've done a lot of Kydex work for us over the years great company just small mom-and-pop mom-and-pop kind of shop but they do awesome awesome work and I can't recommend them enough what's really cool is they have a lot of designs in stock so you don't have to ship your knife off so I didn't have to ship this knife off to have a custom cottage cheese made for it I just went over police my order picked my options that I wanted and we're ready to rock and roll so that's really cool that they have that and Heather with a lot of knives not just with Becker's so that's really nice so I encourage you to go over there if you're looking for a custom Kydex sheath for your becker or any other knife go check them out we will have also a promo code in the link below and that will help give you a percentage off of the purchase they really are a great supporter of the channel over here and we just really appreciate them and they make good stuff so it's a win-win and and a good prices I believe this one a basic model can go for as low as I think like around 4045 dollars depending on your attachment options and then you can get pretty crazy and go up to close to 100 it's just up to you so what I really like with this one is I did a taco design just to keep the profile really slim zero rattle that's just this banging up against the handle there zero rattle I really like this attachment this will fit on a lot of any blade tech basically compatible sheath you can just purchase this even but this is a drop leg feature with a blade tech lock that I can put it on my belt really nice and easy we got the nice drainage hole and then we got that really good thumb ramp and this is what I like about the K bar and the AZ welke sheath in combination so I could pull this out and I'm ready to go I don't have to do any sort of walk-up readjustment with the handle I can literally click that bad boy in pull and we're ready to rock and roll so you in for a military deployment or you know self-defense roles you know an animal coming up on you or whatever at least you'll be able to deploy that knife out of that sheath very quickly so I really really like that a lot so that's what I have decided to opt with and I would highly recommend taking a look at if you're looking for custom kayaks okay so here we go folks we are looking at the K barge aras Tarak down here great great mid weight survival knife then we have again the BK seven another great option in an SE six all have been tricked out different ways except for the Jarrah so the S II has g10 handle scales from the knife connection net and a custom Kotik sheath all of that and then we have obviously everything we've seen with the BK seven but the Tarak is straight out of the box no customizations because as of right now unless you go full custom and order custom handle scales from somebody and order a custom Kydex sheath there's really no out of the gate way to trick out the knife so that's part of it now the question would be do you really need to trick it out right out of the gate those are some things to consider absolutely so I just want to run and head the head here just so you get some perspective on why you might want the BK seven over these two other options or maybe these two other options connect with you more I just wanted to show you what they have competitively so one of the things right out of the gate that you're gonna notice is that the SE six has a finger choil has this designated grip right up here so that you can get really close to the edge and really maneuver the knife very nicely the BK seven does not offer that and neither does the Jara's they just have guards and then straight to the edge now there are trade-offs to that what that means is that they these two down here might be a little bit more quote unquote tactically motivated to be more used as a soldier knife not that the SE couldn't do that but it does have a really good guard down here but that choil offers itself a level of maneuverability on the finer things on the finer cutting tasks that the BK seven or the Jara's might not be able to offer you now on the flip side the SE six has a full flat grind whereas these two guys have clip points high saber grinds which means that the blade tips are stronger and the overall blade is slightly stronger because of the flat portion here and the blade does the grind doesn't go all the way up to the spine so that means that the su six is a little bit better at slicing but it's a little bit weaker at putana ng chopping and piercing it doesn't have quite tip design for those things so it depends on what you're looking for if they're looking for a lot of really fine detail work and really good control over the knife the se6 will do a better job than the bk7 or the Jara's Tarak but they the sd-6 wouldn't be my first choice with harder heavy duty tasks more in either a military or just hard use lots and lots of chopping a lots and lots of batani I would probably go with one of these other two for that so it just kind of depends on what you're looking for and what you think you're gonna be using the knife more now some other just data points for you guys that's what really what I'm doing with this comparison is I just want to give you some data points to help you you know choose neither the sd-6 or the jurors are really gonna do as well as bk7 in chopping for two reasons the me k7 is about two ounces out of the gate heavier and then with those handle scales is still gonna hold that distance on these two other knives and with this really nice kind of bird beak handle back here it's gonna allow itself to stay in your hand for longer periods of time in the hacking so if you feel like that is a must with your mid weight survival knife I've got to be able to chop in an emergency situation then the Becker vk7 is going to be the winner compared to these other two they just don't have quite the handle design to stay in your hand without having to reset and they aren't as heavy so you're not gonna get as much weight with each swing when you are chopping so that is something to consider depending on how you think you're gonna use the knife if you're like dude I'm never gonna chop well then maybe that doesn't really matter to you okay so to wrap this all up into a nice bow because again that's what we do here folks that's why I created the channel is to give you guys data points feedback concepts so you can decide do you want to build the ultimate Becker bk7 or are there other knives out there and if you're gonna build the ultimate Becker bk7 this is an option well this is one way to do it so there are many ways to skin a cat when it comes to the Becker's there are many ways to trick out a Becker so this is my kind of final thoughts to wrap it all up based off of the things that we have talked about so far if you are looking for a knife that has the option to be upgraded but it comes with some great options and you want mega control you like a lot of control over your knife you like finger toils well then the obvious choice is going to be the SE six comes with a polymer sheath right out of the gate dude my car to handle scales they're a little blah keye not quite as comfortable is these other two knives down here but they are micarta have a little bit better texture than these to do out of the box and there's still that option to upgrade them with custom Kydex either from the SC's I'm talking about from AZ welke they have custom Kai Dexter you can do the g10 handles you do all kinds of craziness that that are available and I'll have as many links as I can thrown below so that's really where the SE you know would fall in then if you're maybe saying to yourself okay I don't really want to trick out at all I don't want to do any sort of modifications I don't wanna have to spend any extra money and I don't really like finger toils and I want a Midway survival knife that definitely I could use in a military format or out in the woods and be just as comfortable and at home then I'm gonna say it's the Jara's Tarak obviously no finger choil we do get a little bit better texturing on these more rounded handles so that's gonna have better texturing than the stock or ivory bk7 and it will have better contouring than the blocky se6 my card is out of the gate so it has better contouring a little bit better traction still a polymer note oil obviously and it comes with a better sheath out of the box then the K bar does the K bar has that nylon one again this one has a polymer that's ambidextrous that really does hold the the knife really well and I'm very impressed with it eighty dollars at the gate you're really ready to rock and roll but if you are willing to upgrade if you are looking for the biggest mid weight and heaviest mid weight survival knife that I've really seen and in this price range and in this capability of being able to be tweaked and customized like you would want well then that is where the BK 7 still is king because when I do put these g10 handles or micarta handles on on them I prefer it over the feeling of the Jara's Tarak and this ez welke Kydex is going to give me more options be a better fit and finish and better feel overall than the stock Jara's sheath so if you are wanting that capability without a finger choil as well and not having to have a finger choil so this one will out chop both of these this one will out baton both of these because there's a longer blade it's a little heavier and it's you're still gonna have decent control over the knife so that's really where all three of these fit in depending on what you are looking forward basically all tricked out the backer bk7 will be able to do the heavy will be able to carry the heaviest load and it's the biggest bulldozer of the bunch if that makes sense so I hope that this video in this this portion particularly has just helped you break down is the Becker bk7 the right ultimate blade to build out for you and these options are these the right options to go with or there's other stuff out there that you might be interested in or is it one of these two other blades that's what we always want to do here
