Ukrainians head for Polish border where thousands stand ready to help | ITV News

[Music] they are the sounds children make when they're ripped from the only lives they've ever known taken from their homes and plunged into darkness into chaos in a foreign place beyond the battlefield there is another crisis unfolding at ukraine's borders as thousands flee to safety when the air raid siren sounded near lev anna started her 50-mile walk here this is very difficult because i know that in poland i i save but in ukrainian i have my family for others the journey was longer it took vika and her daughter 23 hours to get here zainab has no shoes her hands and feet are frozen she tells me she doesn't have any feeling in them she keeps crying because she is so cold family after family arrive in a tidal wave of suffering tatiana is four years old she has just walked 12 miles with her mother to poland but without her father they wouldn't let my husband out she says he has to stay and fight i don't know what will happen to him nearly 40 000 refugees have made their way across the border into poland in the last 24 hours but when they actually get it they don't know where to go next or what to do their lives have simply been torn apart and this is only the beginning the temperatures were below zero tonight but there was kindness in amongst the confusion nikolai and katarina drove for five hours from warsaw to offer people somewhere to stay here there is mothers alone with children coming here in the cold and they come to a foreign country they have no idea what is going on these people need help there were others though like ivan heading in the opposite direction everybody is leaving ukraine they are escaping you are going back why not it's our ukraine it's our land i'm going to fight to ukraine he says but there are no winners in war just countless devastated lives with tears for what has happened and what is yet to come you
