hello beautiful people welcome back to my channel my name is janie a.k.a junior canada today i have a very fun video for you which is uk versus canada which is better i know i've got a lot of friends who are like okay i want to move i want to immigrate and i'm not sure if i want to do the uk now that they have a really nice immigration program or if i want to do canada and therefore i could answer this question myself for while i dovah well i could just bring somebody who has lived in the uk in canada you could talk about it herself pat on my part of my terrible british accent that's what you're going to hear throughout this video anyways i'm sorry if you're new to this channel which marvin where have you been please like share and subscribe if you're interested about the immigrant journey or life as an immigrant in canada this is the place to be and without further ado [Music] christmas is going to appear like this it's good to have you on the channel how's it going good thank you how are you i'm good thank you so let's get into it i want this video to be short and sweet tell the people how long have you lived in the uk how long have you lived in canada what makes you the authority to talk about canada versus uk okay so i was born in canada lived here for nine months and then lived in the uk for another 22 years after that and then came back to canada for work for two and a half years and then just before the pandemic so december 2019 moved back to the uk and have been there and planned to stay there for the time being oh we already have a winner just look at that accent she plans to stay there come closer there we go okay so perfect so chris now we're going to actually talk about if you're watching this video we're going to talk about whether we're going to talk about the geography we're going to talk about education the job market um housing market what is it like to rent or buy or whatever somebody misses shopping shopping is key we'll talk about shopping we'll talk about like ease of life cost of living all of that okay so if that sounds like transportation oh my goodness like living with a family all of that stuff is what we're going to quickly talk about in as short a time as possible so stick around so crazy are you ready i'm ready what is the first thing you want to talk about when it comes to the uk what do you love about it um let's do let's start with shopping that's a little tough let's start with shopping okay so you've shopped in canada you shop in the uk which is better uk 100 why is that the clothes are better it's cheaper there's more variety there's more shops it's just a better experience honestly the quality of clothes too are better like there's more options there's more fashion just look at the jumper she's wearing you wouldn't even find something that's nice with these beautiful sleeves in canada but i think let's actually go back let's talk about geography i think it's very important to talk about like where the uk is and the benefit of it versus canada so canada is very big it's the second largest country after russia and most of canada is inhabitable it's not necessarily like it is it's just so cold so most people actually leave within 100 kilometers of the u.s border so as big as the canada is we have only 35 million people and the uk population is doubled that's like that six to six six to seven and it's way smaller of a country so there's more population density in the uk yeah so and also i feel like where is it which of the countries makes it easier to travel you care canada the uk definitely it is smaller but it's better connected and more people use public transport in the uk than they do here more people drive here and less people drive in the uk that's actually chicken is also smaller too do you have both passports yes i have to have both passports so which passport do you flex more my canadian now that i live in the uk but when because it's cool but when you lived in canada which passport would you flex more um it's probably still my canadian because it was still my my life was built up in the uk so it's still cool that i had a canadian passport and most of my connections were in the uk that honestly makes sense and the accent already is the passport exactly okay and so let's talk about weather okay which weather did you prefer okay and then i have to put a cab yeah yeah what we're not talking about like for certain things all of canada i think certain things will be more so the cities like london versus toronto okay so weather in toronto versus london definitely definitely london with all the rain yeah there's there's probably the same amount of rain in toronto that there is in in london so you guys exaggerate a whole lot more yeah and it's just a way colder here and i prefer the summer although i do prefer a toronto summer why is that because you actually get summer we only get about two weeks it's the same thing in canada you only get like two weeks of summer that's what everybody on the bear bombs are outside for the two weeks okay so i guess whether we can say the uk is slightly better yeah we get we get warm weather from april whereas in canada there was when i lived here there was a snow storm and an ice storm in april correct were in april and there was a snow storm-ish last week so that makes sense okay so now next thing definitely is cost of leaving um so let's talk about like how more affordable is it which what's more expensive uk or canada i think cost of living um canada is probably more expensive in terms of buying groceries cost of transport and things like that but then housing prices renting is pretty much the same in london and toronto okay because you said housing let's come to that next because um we just recently both bought houses so but the thing is we were comparing so i had to get a place an hour and a quarter like an hour and a half outside of toronto because we can't afford anything in toronto and i think it was about the same equivalent for the place you got outside of london yeah in terms of driving it's about an hour and a half drive from london um but it's easily commutable which i think is the main difference i can get a train into central london in half an hour you cannot do that in canada the accessibility in canada transportation is not that broad but again i think that has to do to the geographic expansion of how big the country is but another thing to talk about like in housing let's talk about like what is it like rent investors buy renting renting in toronto i have to say is much nicer it is so messy we got one four point four inches you feel like a bit of a celebrity when you rent in toronto because you have majority of the places downtown i'm speaking are more luxurious you'll have say a concierge there might be a gym in your building whereas if you rent in central london most places are similar to student housing so you might find the kind of mold growing on the walls or heating not working properly and things like that older yeah much much older whereas here they're just building condos absolutely everywhere that's true um and it's it's getting there in london but we're we're way behind it only started probably three four years ago in terms of the quality that you have here and we're talking about like how a lot of places don't even have concierges yeah nowhere has a concierge that's very posh and bougie as we say so it's like henry war formly yeah exactly okay so then we're talking about buying then so let's compare the buying process so even though we say the cost is the same yeah but like i was thinking about how in toronto to get something to say for like 600k and this was before the pandemic like not in the pandemic but like not now because right now it's even worse like our markets i think it's more ridiculous than the market in in in the uk yeah and what we got for about the same price like you got something spanking new like you got to choose your own floors and everything yeah and we got to like just take something that already existed for 15 years and one of the square footage is about the same thing yeah yeah and then the same uh type of situation but you also got a semi yeah and semi-detached property and mine is more like a raw town house so i think it's a little bit more affordable than in the uk yeah i agree i agree it's definitely more affordable um but you do get a lot more space here than you do in the uk so in the uk in terms of new builds where i've bought all the houses are crammed into the smallest place possible so it's kind of like what they're doing in downtown toronto in terms of condos they are literally as close as they possibly can and with new development right now i'm noticing that the place like pre-construction properties like i'm not saying they don't exist but they're starting in like the 800s for an hour to hour out of toronto and they're really small too and they're using subpar materials where like you move in the first week you have to change something but that's something to note but um it's good to know that even though the rent pricing is quite equivalent there's bigger space still in toronto okay transportation we talked about like the accessibility going from your new place to london and train what is it like the transportation's talking about like toronto for instance let's start with toronto versus london okay and then it canada so i'd say in london london's known for its transport system it's really good as it should be and it is very very well connected and you can get very far and by public transport and most people use public transport just because it's quicker than driving driving in london is just terrible there is so much traffic i think the roads are narrower too then narrower you now have to pay some kind of charge um charge for being environmentally friendly and if you're driving within a certain radius of london whereas i find here in toronto yes getting around the city is okay you can go north to south east to west but if you want to go diagonal it gets challenging that is true toronto is literally like a upside down cross so if you're trying to go somewhere in there god help you that's like three buses and things like that but even i feel like canada why transportation just traveling across provinces is so tough whereas in london you can travel countries with train yes very true we can go and it's cheaper it's so much weighty oh my god she's going to greece for like less than 100 bucks yeah for five days and i'm mad i'm like sad well you can't get that i remember like traveling between toronto and vancouver same cities in canada would cost you almost 700 bucks and so that's just something to know about canada versus um uk but now let's talk about education for people who are trying to school as international students themselves or people who have kids which system which country is better for education um they're very different it's something i learned living here how different the system is here in canada compared to the uk so in the uk most people go and they do an undergrad at a university of their choice and whereas i found a lot of students here they did that undergrad and then a master's and then they start working just more educated in canada education before working basically but if people are working if people do do a master's in the uk they'll generally do it while they're working so they've already got their career started while they're doing a masters but our degrees i think are more specialized which is why we can do that makes sense and i think so for education both countries have free education up until even you know up to high school high school as university you have to pay for pure public education so that's something to note um and i think so but i think the uk has way more schools who are in the top 100 i know that if you're trying to look for even more advanced specialized degrees the uk has that better than canada yeah in 2015 when i was trying to do a masters in digital media canada was still looking at it as a theoretical history type course meanwhile in the uk you do something very advanced and practical and actually learn to use digital media like youtube right okay so that's definitely something to know where if you're trying to get something bougie uk if you're trying to you know get quality education and just you love canada then canada for sure we talked about like shopping and fashion what what i don't talk about cost of leaving did we talk about cost of leaving we touched on it we touched in it so what is which you said um uk is better yeah worries about the equivalent but um fashion is and fashion is more accessible and affordable in the uk what about things like groceries and tip and culture oh yeah so groceries in canada well toronto more specifically surprised me how expensive it was in the uk i could do a weekly shop for one person this is for about 25 pounds which is what 45 dollars or something like that holy smokes my weekly budget is at least 150. yeah so when i lived here and i went and did my weekly shop i couldn't believe how expensive it was for such simple there were things that i thought was simple from living in the uk and then the tipping culture also really really shocked me so even when you order say food or if you get an uber somewhere or if you go and get your nails done whatever it might be having to tip over here in canada really shocked me because i think in the uk the culture as you tip if you get a really really good service which makes sense yeah whereas i think here in toronto because of how salaries are paid in things a lot of those workers and employees they make most of their money off tips so the tip and culture does make sense but it's something you have to adapt to and because i get used to yeah you really have to say okay this is how much i'm gonna spend but i've also got to allow for a tip on top of that so you can budget properly that makes sense and so you talked about like job opportunities a little bit so what would you say is better job opportunities that we have more in canada or more in the uk um generally from like my industry so working in the recruitment business corporate type of world a lot more opportunities i found in london and that was one of the reasons why i did move back so being in toronto i would have had to weigh quite a quite a bit um in terms of years of experience in order to get promoted whereas in the uk if you do the job well no matter how much experience you have or how little experience if you're doing it well you will get promoted interesting so it's a lot more easier to go up in the uk there's more opportunities i think also that has to do with the size of the population size too bad the way work and education happens where here you need to have a master's and like a million degrees crazy even considered worthy but then salary then what would you say which country pays more um i think i think it's about the same from what i've seen it it's pretty kind of relative to the exchange rate and but that's again from my small lens of recruitment and corporate no that's fair i would definitely say to the job opportunities part is i know that toronto canada and a lot of other cities are now having tech specific immigration programs because there's such a shortage of tech roles and it's right now a talent like market where companies and organizations are now looking for skill talent so i think when it comes to that piece you can make decision on uk versus canada and you will be fine and lastly i know because a lot of you we talk about immigration and i think this is where our coming is um recently the uk now has an immigration program where you can come to the uk and stay long-term but and it's still it's now points based like the canada and the australian immigration program the only thing that would say to that and i was reading up about this is the uk's point based system you'd not still have to have a job offer before you can get into it and it would be a work permit whereas with canada you can get permanent residency from your country you don't need a job offer you can come here and figure out your job offer so what i know some people have considered doing is go to the uk get that job offer get some experience so that they don't move to canada and are looking for work for a long time so once you have that experience for a year or two from the uk you can also apply to become a permanent resident of canada and you would have had multiple experiences across different organizations so is there anything else we missed i think we covered it i think we covered it i think we've covered it i think we covered everything if you want us to go into anything deeper let us know in the comments what country do you want us to compare canada to i'm really happy to find someone and bring them on but i hope you like this video i hope this video helps you make a decision on uk versus canada if you liked it give it a like and if you love it please subscribe and i'll see you in the next one thank you christmas bye [Music]
