welcome to crosstalk solutions my name is Chris I'm very excited to bring to you part one of a new tutorial series that's going to cover the basics of ubiquity of routing and switching now this series is designed for those of you who are looking to learn more about edgemax devices networking basics routing switching firewalls VLANs and much much more so this online course is being taught by kevin houser and kevin is the author of this book the unauthorized guide to ubiquity routing and switching now kevin really knows his stuff because as his day job he's actually a trainer for the micro comm academy where they offer a number of courses including the ub RSS or ubiquity routing and switching specialist that's the course that this book is actually based on now I took Kevin's UB RSS course earlier this year and became UV RSS certified myself now one of the things that I really enjoyed about the course as well as the book is that Kevin attempts to explain not only how to do something but also why you need to do it now it's one thing when a book tells you how to do something but you don't actually learn it or you don't really understand it until you understand why you need to do that thing so that is what this course is all about to help you get a firm grasp of edgemax routing and switching now this course is entirely free here on the crosstalk Solutions YouTube channel but if you would also like to purchase the book this course is based on you can find links below in the description having the books a really great reference for the course and allows you to go back and review any of the settings or concepts that were discussed without having to re watch the videos if you want the paperback or the kindle version of the book the links below go to Amazon however if you don't have a Kindle or if you're an area where Amazon won't send you the paperback version you can also purchase a PDF copy of the book on the crosstalk solutions web store when you buy the book on crosstalk solutions.com will email you a link to download the PDF immediately after purchasing as far as the equipment that you'll need to follow along with this course will specifically be using the drowner X as well as the edge switch 8 151 however these same routing and switching concepts will work with any of the edgemax routers and switches links below in the description to the actual equipment that we're using in the course in case you want to follow along and these are both absolutely great devices that you'll definitely get a lot of use out of so finally we're doing this course with the full permission of my Kirkham Academy and they have offered a coupon code for anyone who wants to further their education by attending one of their courses if you use coupon code crosstalk when purchasing a course from micro comm Academy you'll get $200 off the course in the case of the UB RSS not only do you get $200 off but the course comes with an edge router X it comes with an edge switch 8 150 watt and a light beam AC that are all yours to keep just for attending the course one of the things that I really like about the micro Khan Academy is that they come to you they have courses scheduled all over the US and Canada so that you never have to travel too far to get trained I'll put a link below in the description to the micro comm Academy so you can check out all of their courses as well as the class schedules to see when they're coming to your town ok so without further ado I'll hand it over to Kevin for part 1 of ubiquity routing and switching basics hi my name is Kevin I am a certified ubiquity trainer and today I want to do a video to sort of help the beginner walk through the initial setup of an edge router and also I'd like to start off by saying that this is gonna be one of many many videos that I'm going to do maybe up to ten that will sort of help the entry-level user walk through the setup and configuration of our our I am the author of the unauthorized guide to ubiquity brought in switching Chris will put a link on here for me thank you very much Chris I want to say that this lesson is important to me I'm gonna call this lesson two five things and what I mean by the five things is when you initially set up a router and we're gonna set up this little edge router X here let's guy here you need to understand as a beginning user you need five things to get this thing connected to the internet you need a local connection and local address you're gonna need a way an address you're going to need that you're gonna DNS you're gonna need a route so I'm gonna walk you through setting up all of those individual things locally and then you can see how it happens and then I'll explain each particular each particular facet as we go ahead as we move on you'll see its particular facet and why that's important if somehow you're out there in the router world and you're setting up a router you're not maybe not that familiar with it and definitely matter what kind of router it is could be mikrotik router a Cisco router you need to think about those five things like do I have a proper dress do I have net running do I have a route to get where I want to go so what we're gonna do first is we're gonna unbox this little guy we're gonna plug it in and we're gonna see how that actually works from start to finish and I'll come right back okay okay so I've plugged this bad boy in smells new I have a green light since it's alive I'm going to plug a ethernet cable a patch cable into eath zero okay they start numbering at zero on a router so I'm gonna plug in either zero the other end of this I'm gonna plug into my computer and I'll show you how that configuration looks here hang in there okay so now we're sitting with the Windows interface we're looking at the desktop this is a Windows 7 desktop yours might be slightly different what we're gonna need to do is we're going to give this computer a local address that the rack the router can actually recognize so we're gonna go and find our network and sharing center and you can do a search for that in the search bar right here for network and sharing center you can also go to control panel and find it in there if you have a later version of Windows for me it's right in here I'm just going to click on change adapter settings you'll notice that I've disabled my network connection for the wireless I don't really need that now so I'm just gonna go to properties of the local area connection IP version 4 open that up and I have given my computer to the address 192 168 1.10 with a mask of 255 255 255 0 and 4 now that's really all I need to do to access the router to access the router might open up a browser this is Chrome doesn't really matter what browser you use and I'll type in the address 192.168.1.1 that's the default address of the router yeah there we go now I have logged in this router before so the initial screen will give you a show you a license agreement you will log on with the credentials of ub NT u b NT and agree to the licensing both since i've already logged in once that's been cleaned up i am going to log in again UVM te u BN t log in there we go so you're gonna get this default sort of a three pane screen here the top will show you traffic the Left shows services they have running in the bottom shows all of your interfaces and there's a little gray bar here you can use that bar to minimize the screen or to remove that upper screen if you don't want to see that upper screen and you can see Charlie I do have an interface of 192 168 1 dot one on easy row that's the one I'm currently connected to it shows the status of connected which is kind of cool alright so what we're going to do I'm actually going to walk through one of the wizards here to allow you to connect this thing the very first time they also want you to notice that up in the top left corner we see the version of this particular operating system or firmware as 1.71 it's a little old but that's ok we're gonna go ahead and leave that for now what we're going to do is we're gonna connect to the internet for the very first time we're gonna simulate a home user who's bought this and they want to set up the on the Internet now I have a separate wire that I actually have running from my service provider and I'm gonna walk through this step-by-step so what we're gonna do is we're gonna select Wizards over here on the top right hand side up on the tabs you'll see that the tab wizard I'm gonna click that and we have these wizards now currently there's only three wizards but when we upgrade this you'll see more but we only need to select one of these we're gonna select win tool and I'm gonna click on that all right so it says use this wizard to set up basic internet connectivity and local settings and that's what we're going to do so the first thing is actually optional secondary LAN port we really got alone won't configure that now it says we're gonna set up the internet on port eath 1 so gives you instructions here connect each one to your internet connect so my little orange cable that I have here I'm gonna plug that into eath one you know I'm gonna go ahead and plug that right in and it says how are you getting an address from your provider this is how are you getting an address from your provider now later on we'll do a video I'll do a video that shows how to do pppoe but for now we're going to get an address automatically from our provider and sdcp and we're gonna go down here and configure the bottom section which says land ports so the land ports in this device will be 2 3 & 4 so once you click configure this this section here you're going to see that ok so your name is gonna be 192 168 2.1 that is the land that i mentioned before that you need a valid land address to communicate on the internet all right aniss is enable DHCP server so anybody connected to any of those ports 2 3 or 4 will actually obtain an address from the router that is a valid address so they can operate and I'm going to go ahead and click apply here now what's gonna happen this is going to count its fingers and toes it's going to check that cable that I've plugged in to the internet port on my my modem from the service provider and it's actually checking to see if that particular connection is valid and is it Gideon an address there we go and we have the configuration has been applied successfully now if you do not have a valid internet connection it will come up and say hey this wizard is completed but we couldn't check the internet it doesn't seem to exist all right so we are good to go so that particular wizard is done ok now I don't need to click apply I've already clicked apply let's go back to our dashboard it says hey guess what if you leave this you can't come back unless you go back to the default configuration but yes I've already configured what I want to configure someone to go ahead and click that all right now in our dashboard here will eliminate the top screen let's look here we have local - right which is my local address right of the first address that was given to it on the e 0 then the eath 1 that's my Internet address so here you can see that the internet has been connected that's awesome now my local address again this is the last three ports on this device and if we look at that real quick let's go to config we can see that these are the ports selected they are called switch ports so anybody connected to these ports either one of these three ports will get an address that is in the one 92168 2.1 2.0 network okay that's very cool now what's what we've done because we've done the wizard we've solved two of the problems right off the bat we have a local address right here we have an Internet address a web address right here so that's two of them now one of the beautiful things about the wizard is that it does the other things for you as well now NAT let's let's look at NAT that's under firewall net we'll click that and under the tab NAT you can see that there is already in that rule that the wizard has placed in here okay so what NAT does NAT takes your local address this guy over here to dot whatever that's been assigned to my computer and it converts it to this address so my computer can then browse the Internet so that's what's Ness is actually set up to do so if we go back there again we see that we have a rule let's look at it under actions and we can see that we are leaving out Ethernet one we are using the rule the translation method of masquerade if you hover over a little eye here that it says hey I'm using the outside address the primary outside address to get on to the Internet I can't wander around the internet without a valid public address I can I use my private address to wander around on the Internet masquerade is merely given me that outside address and a related port number a port a port number is a virtual number that's applied or appended to the end of my IP address they're really interesting about this is it scales really well I can literally have hundreds of people inside my land using masquerade and each one of them would get a separate port number while using the same outside address which is very very cool all right so go ahead and I'm gonna cancel that and see my natural setup so to review I have my land address of two dot whatever I have my internet address and I have NAT running all right so what about DNS DNS is a translation service okay when I'm in a browser and I type in a web address Google let's say what happens is I'm asking a DNS internet server I'm not gonna get that right now but because I have to complete this what I'm doing is I'm asking an internet-based server to resolve the name Google to an actual address because in order to route my PACA sir I need his actual address very good so under services under DNS we can see that the wizard has already completed it says I'm gonna listen for requests from Switzer o or Ethan at 0 these are my listening interfaces I'm gonna go and forward these requests to my internet service provider and I'm going to cache or write in memory the first 150 pages that I actually find that way I'm going to keep them resolved all the time now the last thing was a route so let's look at routing ok don't be don't be scared Ola now you'll notice that under routing we have routes a tab we have an OSPF tab we have add static route and this is actually going to show you the the routes that this particular router already knows of the first one the first entry the destination of all zeros here that's the internet and we're using this particular address to get to the internet right and it's telling me what interface is actually using so the wizard has actually set up the route for me now remember those five things I need why I've got the five things but how come my device my computer can't get on the Internet well that has to do with my local settings alright so what I'm going to do going to unplug my local adapter I'm gonna unplug my computer from eath zero which has that static address of 1.1 and I'm going to obtain an address in the two network and so I'm just gonna reach over and unplug that I'm gonna plug it in to e - all right so I'm connected to ease 2 which is in this switch configuration right here these two then I'm gonna go back to my computer and I'm gonna change my network adapter change adapter right click that bad boy select properties back to vie P version 4 properties and I must like to obtain obtain an address automatically and I'm going to obtain DNS automatically and I'll click OK to that I'll click close now I you notice I've got this dialog box that says hey I don't see your router anymore well it's because I just changed my address not a big deal ok well suppose let's refresh that screen it takes a minute or two yeah I know it's one and beat up let's go back in here let's go to 2.1 how about that how about that get to the right address Atos it's always helpful right there we go alright so back in under 2.1 and i'm back into the router again I'm still the same guy you'd be into you BMT like I log back into my router alright cool now let's see from my router I'm going to actually test and see if I've in our connectivity I'll go up to toolbox and I'll select ping and let's ping a da ta da ta that is a Google DNS server I'll ping it with six packets I don't need to select Sonny sir I'll run the test and sure enough I'm getting a reply at time to live reply so I am getting the reply that's wonderful alright cool let me see if we actually can ping a website let's try pinging google.com and we'll do the test again and sure enough we're getting to google.com all right cool very good so let me stop that so the router is moving traffic is my computer let me open another tab let's open up a site I have not opened for some time like hat dot-com and yeah there we go so I met caterpillar comm you'll also notice that my wireless is still disabled so I'm not using the wireless in my home I'm going through my local area connection to get onto the Internet all right so it was nice all right so I'm part of the switch port here that is the to network so my computer got an address right let's go look at see what address actually got to do that I can go back in here to this adapter and I can just right-click this thing and select status and details and sure enough I got 2.21 excellent all right so I got an address in the to network of 2.21 so I have a local address I have a way an address I have my services running you know I have DNS okay I have a route and I have net now they're really the real pleasurable thing about this particular router is running through the Wizards that this will actually do all that heavy lifting for you so you don't need to do that now I mentioned the five things and these are things that you should take to heart these are things that you should memorize local address LAN address DNS and that and a route alright there's a sixth item that I haven't mentioned yet that's gonna be a completely separate video and that's gonna be a firewall now you don't need a firewall to actually get the router to connect to the internet right but you're going to need one now the beautiful thing about this particular wizard is if we select the tab firewall policies here you'll see that it has already created some basic firewalls for us to actually you know get us to be much safer here this is actually much better so the wizard actually does a lot of the heavy lifting for you okay very very cool very cool so this is this is the five things let's let's look you know let's let's look forward to setting up a firewall policy that's a little more advanced than just these basic rules but yeah this is it this is it nothing to it right like falling off a log all right very good well alrighty that wasn't painful at least not for me simple remember the five things LAN LAN nat dns route way to get out this is important place that I teach entry-level users every single week and I can't stress enough that it's not hard it's not uncommon to miss a step now people and people regularly in a classroom situation necessarily are using the setup wizards but we are using the wizard here because this replicates what a home user does and we're using the wizard as well because now we can go back and look at the settings of it it made for us it's setup nat Fortis forest is setup a dns for us it's set up the firewall rules for us so now you come back and you can review those and see how it's done that so if you want to replicate that firewall rule or that in that rule it's easy to do thanks for taking the time to watch this video I hope to see you again once again if you're interested in the book Chris will put a link on this below and have a good death thanks you
