the following program is a color feature presentation on the hughes sports [Music] [Applause] network [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this week in pro football is brought to you by hager the slacks people we make everybody look good and by the 1972 buick something to believe in i'm tom brookshire and i'm pat sumrall last sunday was halloween and there were some appropriately strange things happening in the nfl for example in most of the games played last weekend the winning quarterback was a backup quarterback that just shows you how important it is for every team to have two or even three good quarterbacks another oddity pad is that at the midway point of the season only one team has a substantial lead in its division and that division the nfc east was supposed to have the only runaway leader but it was supposed to be dallas not washington just no way to protect pro football as you and i approve every week with our fearless predictions we'll be right back to show you all the best of last week's pro football action after this message last week the los angeles rams headed into the tough part of their schedule as they went up against the miami dolphins and for the rams that may have been the beginning of the end because the dolphins are only the first of five consecutive playoff teams that they have to face last week the division-leading dolphins visited the division-leading rams and something was bound to give unfortunately for the hometown crowd it was the rams the dolphins scored the first time they had the ball as bob griese hooked up with paul warfield on a 74-yard play [Music] and while the miami offense was hitting for points the defense was hitting for keeps as gabriel was sacked often [Music] greasy too suffered his share of defensive punishment [Music] however it didn't seem to make him the least bit timid [Music] [Music] greasy's second touchdown pass was to number 81 howard twilly [Music] but as howard soon learned the play was nullified by a penalty but later greasy and twilly got even and miami led 17-0 gabriel finally ignited the rams and they began a furious rally [Music] jack snow's score made it 2014. [Music] then with 130 left gabriel hit number 13 lance renzel on the miami one but renzel had been pushing on the play and the penalty pushed los angeles out of first place in the nfc west as miami went on to win 20-14 [Music] rams just couldn't have come much closer without winning pat but miami still came out of it hanging on to that eastern division lead the dolphins lead is not what i'd call secure time every time they turn around they find a rampaging herd of super colts just a half game behind ancient memorial stadium wears a mantle of fog and mist like a comfortable old top coat in the fall baltimore maryland seems perpetually shrouded in a chilling drizzle and it's no secret these coats are great mudders last week the angry pittsburgh steelers were in to make mortal the baltimore rushing game the colts were held to 74 yards on the ground and terry bradshaw found the only way to fly with a 31-yard touchdown to ronnie shanklin [Music] bradshaw also scored twice himself on short runs and with her master plan to stop baltimore's bread and butter ground game the steelers sensed an upset but the colts crossed up the steelers scheme by resurrecting a memory and going up top baltimore's new wide receiver where a number 87 had a hauntingly familiar look for colt fans willie richardson was back in baltimore after a couple of stops around the league which had tarnished his magic image but suddenly it seemed that not one week had passed here was willie richardson again playing the corner to perfection [Music] here was willie richardson again floating along two strides behind his defender [Music] with two touchdowns at 100 yards number 87 had returned but he did not carry the colts alone number 15 earl morrell and number 27 ray perkins proved the colts could live without the big rush [Music] perkins managed 64 yards to set up the first cold score and he came back later with another post pattern for 60 more [Music] baltimore's passing game surpassed its rushing attack by four times as the colts prove they can win both ways despite the day-long drizzle only one baltimore fan and the pittsburgh steelers left old memorial stadium disappointed as the colts fashioned an impressive 34-21 victory to remain a half game behind the miami dolphins for leadership of the afc east last week the st louis cards shuffled off to buffalo where they finally found an opponent with more problems than they have in fact more problems than any other team in the league the buffalo bills were last in offense last in defense and the only nfl team to have lost every game st louis quarterback jim hart did his part to keep buffalo on the bottom as he led the cardinals to a 14 to nothing first quarter lead over the bills [Music] in the second quarter the bills finally found some cause for celebration as they trap power owner sid edwards in the end zone for a safety [Music] a deflected pass from dennis shaw to second year tight end ted coy number 85 brought the bills to within five points at the half [Music] a fumble on the second half kickoff gave jim hart the chance to put the lead back at 12 with a flip to jackie smith on the next series dennis shaw got the bills going again with a ricochet shot to o.j simpson shaw followed by rolling right and firing to running back greg jones number 36 whose touchdown again closed the gap to five at 21-16 after three quarters [Music] in the fourth quarter jim hart again built a stainless lead to 12 with a touchdown dart to second year tight end jim mcfarland number 83. still the bills kept coming on the next series a left-handed pass from number 34 rookie running back jim braxton to wide receiver haven moses put buffalo in scoring position again [Music] then came the plays which once and for all ruined buffalo's chance for their first victory shaw rolling right found haven moses in the end zone but the apparent touchdown was nullified by a holding penalty which was then followed by two end zone interceptions on consecutive series of downs [Music] buffalo's inability to score from close range made the longest play of the day far less meaningful alvin white returned to chuck ladder red punch 61 yards to a touchdown in the closing minutes for buffalo it was the closest they had been all year but it still had to be officially recorded as their 12th consecutive loss final score st louis 28 buffalo 23. last week billy kilmer beat his old team the new orleans saints he has won six out of seven games in washington the redskins are on top by two games in the nfc east and now i understand that sonny jurgensen is ready to play so who's the quarterback in washington tom well pat if you're george allen i guess you keep your great quarterback on the bench as long as your good quarterback is still winning for years sonny jurgensen has been a pillar of washington's offense a pillar to charlie taylor's post and together they were wonderful but for now they are lost in roy jefferson a former all-pro misfit and a roustabout quarterback named billy kilmer are filling in for washington's dynamic duo and with the help of a rebuilt rough and tumble defense the redskins are winning [Music] last week against new orleans neither archie manning nor his replacement number 14 ed hargit could shake washington out of its power position defense and although the saints scored twice in the fourth period they were never allowed to hope for victory [Music] [Music] target and manning were constantly harassed and sacked six times number 37 pat fisher iced the game with this interception and 53-yard touchdown run while washington's offense and special squads allowed six turnovers apparently suffering a post-kansas city big game let down the defense was undaunted and the game ball the token of victory was shared by fisher myron patios and jimmy jones all members of the defense and billy kilmer threw for 204 yards this long strike to roy jefferson and he directed a ground attack worth 173 more yards [Music] kilmer is the leader he is cut out of the bandy tough bobby lane mode follow this one yard touchdown run in super slow motion follow number 17 and see in his face with what feelings he has won the leader's place on the redskins [Music] number 43 the mighty mongoose is the final ingredient needed for a victory and against new orleans larry brown rushed for 113 yards on a repeat of this play watch number 56 lynn hawes blew open a gaping hole in the saints line [Music] behind kilmer and brown and a rugged defense washington's mistakes were invisible as the redskins brushed by new orleans 2414 to take a commanding lead in the nfc east we'll have more exciting action on this week in pro football right after this brief message last week when cincinnati traveled to the astrodome they had not won since the season's opening day but their hunger for victory was no greater than that of their opponents the houston oilers who hadn't won any games at all in houston it was definitely not a day for quarterbacks first houston rookie dan pastorini was intercepted twice by second year bengal cornerback lamar parish number 20. [Music] next pastorini was intercepted twice by the other bengal cornerback ken riley number 13. [Music] the four interceptions gave cincinnati's rookie quarterback ken anderson good field position but it didn't help nine times the bengal passer was dumped a statistic which led to an even more impressive statistic the bengals total passing offense of minus 52 yards when punter quarterback dave lewis replaced anderson the results were the same more minus yardage all told it had to be cincinnati's most frustrating of their six consecutive losses because they never even got close to a touchdown appropriately the game's only touchdown was scored by the order defense when safety ken houston stole an anderson pass and slick stepped 48 yards to the end zone for the oilers houston's run in a 10-6 margin of victory their first of the season while houston was finally ending their losing streak in philadelphia there was a collision of winning streaks that's right tom the denver broncos had won two in a row and the eagles had won one which for the eagles is a winning streak the eagles play football in south philadelphia where win or lose the fans are always in a hurry to reveal that everyone speaks the same language well almost everyone while some eagle fans got their letters crossed up denver's loose saban had his signals crossed because his broncos were supposed to beat the eagles and they did not everyone expected denver's premier running back floyd little to have a good day and he did gaining over 120 yards but denver could manage only one touchdown also expected was a lot of contact from denver's defensive front four and all you have to do is ask eagles quarterback rick arrington about them but even though the eagles offense was virtually non-existent they didn't need much because their specialty teams made it easy leading three to nothing in the second quarter tom mcneal punted to denver's billy thompson number 36. thompson was separated from the ball and reality by ike kelly number 51. steve zabel recovered and the eagles scored on a rick arrington pass to ben hawkins [Music] eagle linebacker billy hobbs number 56 plays on the eagles specialty team because he's very fast and very tough with the eagles leading 10-7 he entered the game with a punt coverage team denver's billy van hewson found out how fast when hobbs blocked his second quarter putt and score the eagle's second touchdown as reported on the spot by defensive end richard harris number 84. if hobbs was the hero of the first half then it was only fair that his roommate be the hero of the second inching closer on a pair of third quarter field goals and gaining momentum in the fourth denver's don horn tried to cross up the eagles on some deep pass routes unfortunately for him safety bill bradley number 28 was running the best routes as twice in the fourth quarter he saved the eagles good fortune [Music] throughout the eagles tempestuous season bradley has been the most consistent performer but somehow people see but cannot recognize a 511 dynamo from palestine texas [Music] and everybody knows that a kid from texas knows the difference between a football and a hot potato denver had another chance late in the game but bradley's green wave countered with some head ripping defense of their own and it was all over for denver although the eagles didn't do much they had hobbs and bradley on their side and that was what they needed eagle 17 broncos 60. we'll be right back to this week in pro football following station identification this is the hughes sports network in the second half of our show we'll take a look at the nfc west where atlanta returned to contention by upsetting cleveland and where san francisco once again took over undisputed possession of first place that will also take a look at the nfc central where the amazing chicago bears upset dallas to remain just one game behind the first place minnesota vikings who were given a giant size scare up in new york and we'll look at the afc west where san diego put on one of the season's most awesome offensive shows while kansas city and oakland somehow remain tied at the top and in our feature we'll take an in-depth look at a very important part of every team which is often overlooked by the fan but which accounts for about one play in every five we'll see that feature and we'll have more exciting action on this week in pro football right after this brief message as we saw a few minutes ago in the eagles win over denver the work of the special teams can turn a game around however a bomb squatters contribution is selling as obvious as a block punt more often the nameless man of the special team set up victory by sacrificing their bodies and that anonymous swirl of coverage and return plays but as we'll see in this week's feature life on the bomb squad can be uniquely rewarding on every nfl roster there is a group of men whose job it is to labor in the anonymity of the special team this is a demanding brutal task with few rewards but for bob stein it was a start as a rookie stein helped the kansas city chiefs to the super bowl by meeting the unique requirements of life on the special teams especially units are an important part of any football team you're involved in a situation where you're not getting a lot of recognition in the eyes of the general public and yet you're doing a job which you know is essential you're in fact involved in approximately 30 percent of the playing time in each game it becomes a matter of pride and accomplishment [Music] specialty units are broken down into three areas the placement teams the return teams for punts and kickoffs and the coverage teams for both punts and kickoffs on the placement team the primary objective is to protect for your kicker and give him time make sure he's not under pressure when he does make an important kick when you return teams it's a matter of fielding the ball creating a wedge a blocking pattern where the runner can runner can follow and hopefully break [Music] through [Music] the coverage teams to me are the most interesting and the most challenging each man is assigned sort of an alley to run down and you're restricted in that you're responsible for any play through this alley however you're free to make any sort of maneuver you can to get down this alley as far as you can as fast as you can [Music] [Music] so [Music] especially teams really are uh the dirty work of the game so you have to kind of train yourself to be as aggressive as you can can be all the time go ahead and stick your head in there and take your lumps because that's what the game's about and that's what the specialty units do you go through a lot of hardships and you do some things that you aren't really happy doing all year long hoping that eventually you can have your moment for me it was in the new york game i was fortunate to recover a fumbled hunt [Music] i felt like a guy who who finds a bushel basket full of 50 bills but probably more than that i felt exhilarated and that i was really doing something for the team before the super bowl uh coach straham once again emphasized to us the importance of the whole team and a complete effort a complete effort on part of every player and once again mention the specialty teams as being an important factor and then if we if we were to in fact be successful we would have to do our job well okay let's do it i don't know hey these guys can't move the ball again let's do the job on it baby come on no frozen rope get it up in the air so we can cover this thing all right let's go [Applause] hell of a job [Applause] bobby stein yeah bob stein hell in the head bob nice going boy nice hit nice going baby that's a big kick for it boy nice score hey bobby bobby stein hey bob nice going boy that was the greatest i i'd have to say that was the epitome of exhilaration for me just just to be a part of the whole thing bob stein's name will not appear in tomorrow's newspaper reports but he has performed his role with pride and in return has shared full measure in the fulfillment of victory it was the greatest no one appreciates good special team play more than dick nolan of the san francisco 49ers last year san francisco won their first divisional title largely on the improvement of their special teams last week in san francisco the new england patriots got a good look at that improvement the stanford alumni association met at candlestick park last sunday and most of them played in the game both quarterbacks john brody of the 49ers and jim plunkett of new england are from stanford plunkett of course graduated after prohibition and both 18s gene washington of san francisco and randy vataha of new england played there as well the similarity should have ended there but the first half saw some rare occurrences first gene washington dropped a touchdown pass and even more rare the patriots dropped john brody to add insult to injury they intercepted three of john's passes this one by linebacker steve keiner number 57 [Music] but then the game got back to normal after keiner's interception new england's field goal attempt was thwarted by a bad snap and the 49ers were reprieved blanket while frantically searching out his friend vataha spent most of the afternoon getting acquainted with the san francisco defense most of whom got more than one shot at him [Music] but this was a weird game and plunkett was finally rewarded following a 49er fumble plunkett finally found vataha in the end zone and san francisco led only 13-10 in the fourth quarter [Music] but what's good for the rabbit is good for the hair and brody came right back to his number 18 gene washington for 71 yards and the clinching touchdown if this game seemed a close one it was and again the deciding factor was san francisco's special teams [Music] in the first quarter they set up a touchdown by recovering a fumbled punt and scored one with moments remaining when ron garde number 37 fumbled in forest blue number 75 picked it up and saundered 25 yards for the final points [Music] every week the 49ers seem to be flirting with disaster yet they keep on winning this was number four in a row as the 49ers regained first place in the nfc west well the 49ers are now first but the atlanta falcons are rising from the ashes in the nfc west tom not in cleveland pat a proud old football empire looks like it's been reduced to rubble just two weeks ago the cleveland browns were running away from the competition in the afc central division now they are team on the wane a team desperately searching for that old title magic [Music] against the resurgent atlanta falcons the browns mustered but two scores one came on a brilliant effort by bo scott the other on a pass from quarterback bill nelson to number 86 gary collins unfortunately for cleveland both touchdowns were minor victories in a game totally dominated by the falcons atlanta's putter billy lothridge won the annual gary collins die like a swan el foldo award and later gave a fair portrayal of a quarterback which he was many years ago at georgia tech [Music] atlanta's defensive front four got to the brown setbacks almost as fast as the ball led by number 71 john zook the foursome rode rough shot over the browns blockers and smashed down their gimpy legged quarterback [Music] all this pressure caused nelson to throw too hurriedly and as helium balls floated down dreamily into the eager awaiting hands of the atlanta secondary [Applause] four times nelson was intercepted and one of them was converted into a 40-yard touchdown by linebacker don hanson number 58. [Music] the browns were not easy to run against but they found falcon setbacks hard to handle [Music] number 11 dick scheiner is a vagabond quarterback who has been no better than second best with several nfl teams now under the guidance of norm van broglin his perfect spirals are finally finding their mark twice shiner pierced the brown's collapsing zone for touchdown the first went to velvet-fingered rookie ken burrow number 82. the second was a feathery lob to jim mitchell a tight end whose star is on the rise for cleveland it was their second straight hometown humiliation for atlanta it was another leg up in the three-horse race in the nfc west the purple people from minnesota wore white last week and for 58 minutes and 56 seconds nobody in yankee stadium recognized them as some suddenly giant new york giants made the vikings look pale [Music] it began as tricks and treats in new york and it almost ended as a horror show for the vikings on the third play of the game number 43 spider lockhart recovered a stew voigt fumble and the giants were open for business at the minnesota 25 yard line [Music] number 30 ron johnson turned goldward for new york but he coughed up the football and minnesota began again at their own one moments later willie williams intercepted this gary cuazo pass setting up a 37-yard pete gogulak field goal and the giants had first blood when jim kenickie and roland lakes wrestled the ball from dave osborne rookie henry reed raced it into the end zone for an apparent 10-0 margin but lakes had been offsides and the play was nullified the emotionally charged giants were then twice burned when their overzealous pursuit led them away from this reverse to bob grimm and grimm carried 56 yards setting up a touchdown at the giant two [Music] the giants replied with a seven minute 69 yard drive capped by number 31 charlie evans with the score knotted at 10 both teams reigned defensive blows upon the other until number 73 jim konicki left gary cuazo like a beetle on his back at the bottom of yankee stadium plazo was replaced by an old giant nemesis norman sneed [Music] with 64 seconds remaining snead found bob grimm behind a fallen otto brown and the vikings pulled a much tougher than expected victory out of the fire in new york 17-10 well at mid-season the giants and the eagles have each won only two games but the pre-season favorite dallas has won only four is there still hope for the cowboys in the nfc east pack last year dallas was in a similar position tom yet they came back to win their division and the nfc championship like last year landry is again calling the plays but now he has two quarterbacks and a team which is two games out of first place and drowning in its own mistakes in chicago roger staubach number 12 and craig morton number 14 were two quarterbacks on the merry-go-round operated by head coach tom landry on sunday landry called every play by shuttling in and out his revolving quarterbacks this alien strategy worked to perfection on dallas's first possession mixing in the receiving of lance all worth number 19 and the rough house running of dwayne thomas the cowboys prodigal son dallas took a 7-0 lead [Music] the bears use only one quarterback bobby douglas because everyone else is hurt douglas's talents are as yet undeveloped but he is endowed with a cannon strong arm and the body of a tight end his 9-yard scramble for a touchdown even to score at 7-7 in the first quarter [Music] maybe the quarterbacks were not in shape to run those 40 yards to the huddle on every play but somehow the merry-go-round began to spin the wrong way suddenly cowboy setbacks were grist for the big bad bears defensive mix master suddenly wide open dallas receivers became defensive backs as four interceptions turned the game's flow back to the bears trailing 13-7 dallas's doomsday defense towed out and poured over the bears boy quarterback [Music] their pressure caused a fumble and their presence caused a bad snap that they converted into a two-point [Music] safety [Music] ahead 16 to 12 in the last period douglas's pump fake throws defensive back mel rinpro number 20 long enough to allow dick gordon an unmolested path to a touchdown the point after proved as dramatic as the score when douglas turned another bad exchange into an unusual extra point bears 23 cowboys 12. [Music] with just over three minutes left in the game craig morton found gloucester richardson floating free behind the secondary and now the margin was a mere four points 23-19 with two minutes remaining the cowboys forced the bears to punt would be plenty of time to score again cliff harris tried to find the sideline but found only bears and he fumbled thunderstruck the cowboys had lost their third game while head coach jim dooley and his cinderella bears remain just one game behind minnesota in the nfc central in the nfl mid-season marks the end of false optimism the chargers and the jets began 1971 with beautiful dreams of a division title six weeks and only two victories later it was time to get down to the reality of simply carving out a respectable season san diego is a peaceful california community which offers goodwill and refuge to all of god's creatures unless of course it happens to be football season and your name is john hadel haidle is once again embroiled in controversy many would blame him for the worst start in charger history despite the fact that he leads the conference in passing yardage these critics are quick to point out that he also heads up the interception department the new york jets have a different problem not so much who is the quarterback but who isn't with joe namath still recovering from his latest bow with knee surgery coach weave eubank is searching for a stop gap and last sunday at least it looked like number 15 bob davis was up to the task davis gunned one to rich caster number 88 and then teased the charger pass rush with a patented inside screen to john riggins number 44. [Music] reagan's 31-yard bolt gave new york the early lead and seemed to forebode another long afternoon for the chargers but the smoldering san diego attack is potentially explosive and john hadel has survived controversy before hadel hip slicked his way 36 yards to set up the first charger score then he proceeded to darken the skies with football first he went home with rookie mike montgomery number 23. then he looked to another first year man billy harpo parks who leads the afc in receiving [Music] next he'll turn to the old pro of the san diego air corps the ghost gary garrison appeared in the knees 49 yards for the score the 21 point second quarter barrage left san diego fans feeling much better by this time bob davis was running out of tricks for the charger front four and they began to pick his pass pocket now it was the san diego defense which was turning the ball over to john hagel as montgomery kept the route in full swing by signing in for his second score [Music] the defendant rested his case with a toss to pettis norman and the critics will be silent for at least one week while they ponder the facts 358 yards and four touchdowns [Music] while san diego's problem was solving itself new york's was getting worse it was now number 18 al woodall's turn to play joe for the jets [Music] number 44 chris fletcher finished off the san diego air raid as a suddenly robust chargers wallop new york 49-21 with their highest point total in three years but san diego critics are waiting to see if these are the real chargers a plethora of tallies in that one tom well you really laid one on me didn't you also that means that there are many scores but out in oakland there wasn't much scoring which is usual when kansas city meets the raiders and naturally the game was saved for oakland by a man whose hair is silver as his helmet george blanda has proven to all of us that life really does begin at 40 or is it 44 time has passed and in oakland dolly was a year older her birthday wish was of course that the raiders would beat the chiefs and take over sole possession of first place in the afc west and last week at the party it was time to renew all acquaintances as ben davidson dropped in on lynn [Music] dawson and it was a time for raider rookie jack tatum number 31 to show what he's learned in half the nfl season and as always it was time for the otis taylor show [Music] taylor's big plays and ed podolak's second touchdown gave kansas city a 20 to 10 lead and oakland was in trouble all afternoon daryl lamonica was ineffectual against the chiefs and his play left the raiders uninspired and so midway in the last quarter it was time for george blanda and it took george just two plays to put oakland on the board [Music] raymond chester grabbed one pass despite double coverage [Music] and fabulous fred beletnikov grabbed the touchdown [Music] blanda later added a field goal that made the final 20 20. and the only present dolly got for her birthday was that george blanda became the all-time career scoring leader in the nfl [Music] boy mr bland has released something pat it makes you wonder if maybe we shouldn't try to come back well i guess it depends on how things go from here on out we might have to we might have to big ball games though let's pick i think i'm nine and seven you're eight and eight are you right what about this big ball game san francisco and minnesota well considering the revenge factor the fact that san francisco beat the vikings in the championship game last year the playoff championship game fact that both of them blame good defense home field is enough for me to pick minnesota well i'm going to go with the 49ers because i don't think the purple people can score against those san francisco guys well everybody's having trouble at any rate we'll be back next week to show you what happens i'm pat summerhall and i'm tom brookshire and we'll see you next week promotional consideration for ground transportation provided by budget rent-a-car who rents the buick opal and other fine cars this week in pro football has been brought to you by the 1972 buick something to believe in and by hager the slacks people we make everybody look good [Music] this program has been a color feature presentation on the hughes sports network you
