invoking by calling on the good god beginning in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit the lord be with you let's settle our spirits let's be in each other's presence in mutual and loving ways and let's be in the presence of the source of mercy and forgiveness lord jesus you are mercy and forgiveness personified lord have mercy christ jesus you show us the way when it comes to forgiveness christ have mercy christ have mercy and lord jesus you remind us that as hard as it is to believe that you truly are the bread come down from heaven lord have mercy may our good and loving god then have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to new and eternal life [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] jesus christ [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] [Applause] [Music] mercy on us [Music] god [Music] so let us pray a god who caused the minds of the faithful to unite in single purpose for good grant us your people to love what you love and the way that you love and to desire what you promise that amid all the uncertainties of this world our hearts may be fixed on that place where true gladness is found our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the book of joshua joshua gathered together all the tribes of israel at shechem summoning their elders their leaders their judges and their officers when they stood in ranks before god joshua addressed all the people if it does not please you to serve the lord decide today whom you will serve the gods your fathers served beyond the river or the gods of the amorites in whose country you are now dwelling as for me and my household we will serve the lord but the people answered far be it from us to forsake the lord for the service of other gods for it was the lord our god who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of egypt out of a state of slavery he performed those great miracles before our very eyes and protected us along the entire journey and amongst the people through whom we passed therefore we also will serve the lord for he is our god the word of the lord [Music] days the goodness of the lord the goodness of the lord [Music] [Music] lord i will bless the lord at all times praise of him is always in my mind in the lord my soul shall make its post the humble shall we [Music] [Music] the lord turns his eyes to the just and his ears are open to their cry the lord turns his face [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] is [Music] when the just cry out the lord hears and rescues them in their distress [Music] [Laughter] the lord is close to the broken hearted those whose spirit is crushed [Music] [Music] many are the trials of the just man but from them all the lord will rescue him [Music] he will keep god over all his bones not one of his bones shall be broken [Music] lord [Music] all right hang on one second now listen this reading has to be heard in its proper context and rosira and i have had a few uh conversations how challenging it is uh for a woman uh in this 21st century to kind of get up in and proclaim uh this second reading so i want us to hear it however we hear it but from the perspective of when saint paul wrote to the ephesians and then we'll try to open it up a little sufficiently intrigued a reading from the letter of paul to the ephesians brothers and sisters be subordinate to one another out of reverence for christ wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the lord for the husband is head of his wife just as christ is head of the church he himself the savior of the body as the church is subordinate to christ so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything husbands love your wives even as christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her cleansing her by the bath of water with a word that he might present to himself the church in splendor without spot or wrinkle or any such thing that she might be holy and without blemish so also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies he who loves his wife loves himself no one who hates their own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it even as christ does the church because we are members of his body for this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh this is a great mystery but i speak in reference to christ and the church the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] [Music] you [Music] [Music] the word of god is active it can bring our thoughts bring us closer to the [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to john glory just before i begin just a reminder that these past few weeks with the exception of last weekend where we celebrated the assumption of the virgin mary it's been what's called the bread of life discourse where jesus was trying to get into the disciples heads and hearts as to who he was remember we have two thousand years of tradition of being church we were brought up oh this is jesus this is god this is the spirit all these same they didn't have any tradition they had the jewish tradition but they were like who was this guy you were a carpenter we knew you back in the day you turned a little hippy and now you're this you know preacher and they're saying you come down from heaven they had to be scratching their heads saying what is he saying so over these past three weeks that's what we've been been hearing and last week what the reading would have been that we didn't hear was him saying you have to understand i am the bread that come down from heaven and they're like oh no no we know where you were born what are you talking about and here we take off today many of jesus disciples who were listening said this saying is hard who can accept it i'm the bread come down from heaven and since jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this he said to them does this shock you let me ask you something what if you were to see the son of man ascending to where he was before what would you think then you see it is the spirit that gives life while the flesh is of no avail the words that i have spoken to you are spirit and life but there are some of you who don't believe you see jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and he knew the one who would betray him and he said this is why i told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by my father so as a result of this many of his disciples returned to their former way of life they no longer accompanied him so jesus looked at the 12 and he said do you two want to leave then simon peter answered him master to whom shall we go you have the words of eternal life we're coming to believe and are convinced that you are the holy one of god the gospel the good news of the lord r they had to be quick studies the learning curve was steep again they didn't have two thousand years of tradition that we've been steeped in ourselves what was their faith and willingness to believe like fast forward 2000 years 2021 what's our faith and willingness to believe like something to consider with that gospel i'm not going to say too much more about that gospel and i want to first ask anyone at home or in the pews if you'd like to give the homily today because all you have to do is just read off these cards and you know or make up your own stuff whatever you want huh thank you for proclaiming the readings both of you in the way that you did karen rosaria it's not it's not an easy one for 2021 to hear that wives be submissive to your husbands but i thought instead of just doing the short version and letting it be out there maybe there's an opportunity for us to address it i'm not a theologian i'm not a professional with this it's the only take but consider it as we look at our own relationships our own marriages and friendships trust me i thought about going for a homily today on joshua if it doesn't please you to serve the lord decide today whom you will serve i thought yeah that'll be a good homily you know what are our other gods you know we can go down that road but this just kept pulling me back as we heard in the gospel jesus saying he's the bread of life come down from heaven hearing wives be subordinate to your husbands oh yeah by the way hubbies love your wives you know as it says in the gospel these sayings are hard who can accept that the reason we kept the long version of that second reading and i want you to hear these words again be subordinate to one another out of reverence for christ wives be subordinate to your husbands as to the lord for the husband is the head of his wife husbands love your wives dot dot it's a great mystery how do you hear those words today as a human being how do you hear those words today as a woman as a wife how am i hearing these words today as i said at the beginning everything we hear in the scriptures week after week has to be taken in its and heard in its proper context what was the time in which it was said what were the the cultural mores you know who was speaking to whom about what we always have you can't just excise some reading from the scriptures and make it fit into the 21st century into our day today that's actually quite dangerous because people will excise these these words and these phrases and then they apply them to people without it being in the right context and it can be deadly at times what was the culture like two thousand years ago very different from ours especially regarding equal rights equality not just for women for all people but i'm going to underscore especially for women how does this reading today square with what we're seeing on the news in the video footage of people clamoring to the airport in kabul and i just watched this big guy taking out these reeds and these straps and throwing them to these other guys and they're just randomly strapping striking and whipping whom donkeys cows bulls sheep dogs horses who say it women did you see that on the news i saw it i was like he wasn't even looking it was just a woman what's in the psyche what's in the culture 2021 how do we hear this reading what does it do on our subconscious level on the spirit level as we see what we see on the news as we know what's going on right now over in afghanistan it's abhorrent to us i hope it is what's going to happen to those women what's going to happen those educated women let's go to those girls who are promised a new life yes you're in this culture but you know you have rights you have dignity and goodness and beauty and worth and then those who say that or promise that are no longer there to encourage or to protect and now everything changes what's going to happen to those women those girls who have made great strides our necessary pullout military pullout in a chaotic and questionable manner and by the way i'm no military strategist i'm no diplomat but how it happened and i don't know if there could ever be a smooth exit leaves so many of these women and girls so many people at considerable risk for torture rape violence for subjugation and for death as in the days of saint paul and jesus we do not see especially in this country women as property as chattel we don't i don't think see the order of the man then the woman then the children then the servant and the slaves and the goats in this order of rule the man is the head of his wife that ephesians reading was to the people in its time where that culture was that way we don't plant that into today in our culture even offensive as it is to us i think paul is trying to make room for some mutuality husbands love your wives it's still not enough for us i can't imagine it's enough for women mutuality i think that's the way to go in any relationship in any marriage the healthiest marriages the healthiest friendships sibling relationships there's mutuality we all have our roles but being in a mutual interdependence with this self-giving from both sides i think makes some of the healthiest relationships friendships marriages even what i do in my role in my relationships with so many with so much happening in the world today with the afghan pull out taking care of and leaving behind vulnerable people and orchestrating how that's going with all that's happening right here a few hundred miles off of our floridian coast the haitian earthquake connor called from saint boniface hospital this hospital that we we support and are very involved with the walls were standing surgeons flew in people came from all over and they're taking so many folks in from lakai and you know when he called the other day i think it was just good for him to hear a familiar voice and vice versa i said how's it going how's lee's how's your mother-in-law his mother-in-law had a stroke in the middle of all of this going on it's just crazy things just get compounded he said we're all hanging in there we're trying to do the best people are mobilizing he said but the toughest thing is the kids who are being brought in he's got a bunch of his own kids taking care of them repairing them fixing them broken bones traumatic brain injuries it's overwhelming and i'll mention in a little while if please go to our website st boniface hospital health equity international it's right on right on the website there's a donate button that that money goes directly to the hospital into care so much going on down there in afghanistan in our own country how do we deal with this suffering where do we get our own perspective where do we find peace the gospel values of jesus that value each and every person haitian afghani women men gay straight rich poor white black you name it just go the whole root the whole gamut the gospel values of jesus and that love that he has for us prevail in us how do you and i look at the issues in our country today of racism we don't see people in a mutual way with misogyny homophobia anti-semitism how all of that stuff affects our subconscious views does mutuality to the gospel values of jesus and how he loved all people look at all the people he interacted with on so many levels women women women women women who had no status at the time they were the ones who got it not the official guys in the robes the males who were in the business they didn't get it how does the way he was affect how we are with each other in these ways how do our views of mutuality again in marriage and friendship in all relationships affect our political views uh oh what do you mean political don't talk about that this is good and the homily here it's all good right how does our view of mutuality affect our politics and our political views and how we vote do we vote for candidates out of a fear-based place or at a place of mutuality as we try to work together with all of our beautiful differences as we go forward how do we take care of each other how does our view of mutuality brothers and sisters all of us affect how we take care of each other how does it affect whether we wear a mask or not i'm not letting anybody tell me what to do i'm tired of this guess what no kidding who isn't grow up we get a religious exemption right in a house of worship not to wear a mask it doesn't make sense it doesn't fall with common sense that's why next week we're going to start wearing masks but how does our view of mutuality kind of push that out of the way so that we can say yeah i'm wearing this because i could help somebody else i'm wearing this because i'm not just thinking about myself and not because the government is telling us what we have to do i don't know mutuality in our view of it i think can affect all of these things so do these questions shock us like jesus asked the disciples decide today what you will think and who you will serve in mutuality for the word spoken to us as jesus said our spirit and life to whom else shall we go jesus in his mutual love for us helped to convince those guys to believe in who he was and therefore set in motion the mutual way of being a christian the mutual way of loving one another as he loves us so let's look at mutuality in our friendships relationships and marriages and let's go forward inspired by the spirit shall we stand and profess what it is that we believe i believe in one god the father the almighty the maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible and i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made but consubstantial with the father through him all things remain for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became human for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and he rose again on the third day in accordance with the scripture he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets and i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen knowing that we all need help along the way in our marriages in our friendships and our relationships with each other let's call upon the lord now for that guidance that help and for his spirit for us as church that we will find nourishment and sustenance in jesus the bread of life for our daily journey and the fulfillment of all the hungers and yearnings of our hearts we pray lord hear our prayer for a new vision of our marriages relationships and friendships that we may be open to the vision god holds for us and that we may love one another in mutuality we pray lord hear our prayer for a transformation of our minds and hearts that we may be free from all bitterness and anger living together as the beloved of god we pray lord hear our prayer for healing of racism that the holy spirit will open us to the prejudice fears and discrimination that exists within us and in society so that we may promote greater justice mutuality and understanding we pray lord hear our prayer for those who have been evicted from their homes or who are facing eviction that god will move leaders to act to protect them and free up the needed resources for their safe shelter and sustenance we pray lord hear our prayer for our sisters and brothers in afghanistan and haiti that god will preserve them from danger and bloodshed that god will open passageways for those who have cooperated with western nations and bring speedy emergency rescue we pray for all who are ill particularly those with covet 19 and for the sick and suffering among us eileen boleski judith celovif bob verrier nicholas collins hal field glory of your name for our good good of all the church lord who gained for yourself a people by adoption through the one sacrifice offered once and for all bestowed graciously upon each of us the gifts of unity and peace as church all through christ our lord will the lord be with you let's lift up our hearts and let's give thanks to the lord our god it's truly right and just yes it's our duty this body we not only experience the daily effects of your love and care but even now we possess the pledge of eternal life having received the first fruits of the holy spirit at our baptism the spirit that you raised up jesus from the dead we hope for an everlasting share in eternal life all through the paschal mystery so let's join now with the angels and saints as in joyful celebration we acclaim [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yes [Music] oh lord god you are holy indeed you're the fount the source of all holiness love and life make holy these gifts of bread and wine send your spirit upon them like the dewfall that they may become for us the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ at the time that he was betrayed and entered willingly into his own suffering his passion he took bread and giving you thanks he broke it and then he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice once more giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples and he said take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood it's the blood of the new the eternal covenant and it will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins so do this in memory of me the mystery of faith
