- I've spent the last three
days turning my new car into a mini camper with my grandpa. And I really wanna show you the results, but we have to start at the beginning. Disclaimer, I have like zero
experience with using tools and building things with my own hands, but I really, really wanna learn. And this felt like a pretty good opportunity to do just that. My goal is to build a casual mini camper, a weekend warrior type of car
that I can camp and sleep in. And I have exactly three
days to make it happen before I have to leave for my next trip. Okay, so grandpa is taking me to the store to get some plywood. We didn't have any luck in the first store or the second one. Last one. There's one last one in town. (Eva speaks foreign language) (Grandpa sighs)
(Eva laughs) Okay, here's the plan I
need to go to the big city, to the big store and get my plywood there. Maybe it's not very smart of me to make it so public on the internet
that I am incompetent at certain things, but you know what? I figure that if I volunteer to be like the sacrificial lamb, then maybe people will figure that it's okay to suck at things at first. That it's okay to be a rookie
that we all start somewhere. That should probably be enough. I think. (laughs) I have no idea. I didn't calculate anything. I'm so bad at planning. Let's just hope it works out. This is the next thing I
need to buy. What color? Okay, I've just spent about
$450 on all of this stuff, but I guess these are all
of my building materials, and I don't really need
anything else, I guess. Let's get building. All right, let's do this. (upbeat music)
(Eva speaks indistinctly) Summer mode though. (chuckles) Ah! I just wanna reiterate that I
have no idea what I'm doing. So if I fail miserably at all of this, (sighs) I had warned you, okay? You know, I guess I just
figured that like all the people that do this
stuff on the internet, they had to start somewhere, right? So this is my start. I'm gonna build this thing by myself. With a bit of advice from my grandpa, but you gotta learn, right? You just gotta risk it. You gotta do it. (upbeat music) Oh, let's do this. Before I can get started on the build, I first need to paint the plywood with a protective coat, i.e.impregnated. That just made me laugh so much the first time I heard it. (laughs) This is the last piece. I'm so excited. You know, I feel like, I'm
feeling really chuffed. It's like one of those
things where you know, you're attempting to
do something difficult, like a difficult project, and you start with the
thing that's the easiest that you know really well
to give yourself, like, you know, a bit of a competitive edge. That's exactly what I'm doing with this. This has been so smooth. (Eva grunts) All right, mission complete. And now we wait 16 hours
for all of this to dry. That should give me
enough time to plan what I'm actually going to
do with the whole thing. (gentle music) (Eva blowing) Day two, the reality check. (hands tapping) Oop, (laughs) that wasn't planned. You ready? You ready to get to work? All right.
(gentle music) Okay, but before I get started, I'm just gonna go say hi
to grandma and grandpa. Oh my God, strawberries! (gentle music) Yeah, I think the time has
come to actually show you what it is that I want to build inside, because I've kind of
had an image in my mind, but I haven't put it down on paper. So this is also important
for the next stage of this process, which
is gonna be, you know, cutting out all the bits in the plywood and making sure that it all fits together. So let's take a look at the vision. (Eva speaks foreign language) All I wanna do is create like two drawers in the back that I can pull out. So this is like the view from the back, and this is the view from the top. (Grandpa speaks foreign language) (Eva speaks foreign language) (Grandpa speaks foreign language) (Eva speaks foreign language) (Grandpa speaks foreign language) (Eva speaks foreign language) (Grandpa speaks foreign language) - Mm hm. (Grandpa speaks foreign language) (Eva speaks foreign language) (gentle music) (indistinct chatter) 102 centimeters long. So this here is my grandpa's workshop. He actually constructs
roofs, that's his business. And so I'm very lucky to have access to all of his tools today, which he seems a little bit skeptical, but (laughs) we'll make it work. (Eva speaks foreign language) (Grandpa speaks foreign language) (Eva speaks foreign language) (Grandpa speaks foreign language) (Eva speaks foreign language) (saw whirring)
(instrumental music) This is the base. I don't remember which
way it was supposed to go. (instrumental music) (upbeat instrumental music) (saw whirring) (tool scraping) I feel so, so lucky to have one of my grandpas left still. And just reminds me that
like never for a second. Should we take our grandparents
for granted. Never. (tool scraping) (upbeat instrumental music) (air spraying) Okay, so I just brought in the base. Okay, so I actually have
no idea how to use this. So grandpa's gonna show me. Here's a quick story
about tough beginnings. Six and a half years ago, I had exactly zero filmmaking skills. I mean, I didn't know how
to edit, how to shoot, how to tell stories with video. And still for whatever reason I decided to launch a YouTube channel. Okay, so the next step is
installing the like the runners, like the sliders that
my drawers will slide, you know, in and out on. Ta da! This is the kind of skeleton
of the entire construction. Now all we need to do
is build the drawers. So two drawers and then like the top and that will be it. So armed with a $200 secondhand camera, I started traveling
and filming my travels. I honestly had no idea what I was doing. Today though, today I
live and breathe video. It's my full-time job. And I like to think that
my skills have improved somewhat since the early days. Sure, it was super scary
to take that first step, and I felt like a total idiot
on more than one occasion. But if I hadn't taken the first step, then I wouldn't be here
today doing what I love. So that's how I try to
approach most things now. Yeah, you'll definitely suck at first, but every day as you practice your craft, you'll get marginally better. And over time these tiny
marginal improvements will add up to a visible and
serious trajectory of growth. Eventually you'll get there. Okay, now I have to figure out
where to attach the sliders. I don't do math. (chuckles) I've never been good at math. You know what, before I take
on that beast of a mission, I'm gonna attach my cute
little handles to my drawers. Actually, they're not that
little, they're not that... I don't know, is this too big? This might be too big. (laughs) Oh no. Ooh, well it's not too big, but it's very, very maximalist. I mean, it makes a
statement, I don't know. Should I do it? (drill whirring)
(upbeat music) It's getting a little bit late. It's like 5:30 PM, so I
think grandpa is trying to speed up the work a little bit for me. (upbeat music) Whoa! (drill whirring) (upbeat music) (drill whirring) (upbeat music) (sighs) Hi, hi, ooh, I think it fits. One other big test is to see
whether this hatch closes. Yes, it does. Thank God. So as you can probably
tell, we still need to like fit these on top so they
kind of slot in nicely. I need to cover everything with carpet. We need to make some openings for like the middle drawer system. So we're not done yet. We're not done yet, but I think we're both kind of tired. So I think we're gonna
go home, Vilk and I. Hey buddy, you want to go home? I still needed to buy some
things to complete the build, and since I never do my online
shopping without my VPN on, this is the perfect segue into
the sponsor of today's video, Surfshark VPN. In case you're not sure what a VPN does, imagine it as a kind of
shield that protects you, your online identity, and all of the data that you share online from threats on the internet. For example, I always use a VPN whenever I'm online shopping, whenever I make transactions
with my online banking. In fact, in any situation
where I'm sharing any kind of sensitive personal data
with any website online, Surfshark VPN has accompanied
me on all of my travels. I've used it in public
wifi all around the world, but I also use it at home. They now offer Surfshark One, which is comprised of
three different features, alert, search, and antivirus. Let me show you the antivirus real quick. So here I get to perform a
really quick scan of my laptop just to see whether there's any threats or any bad things hiding on it right now. And as you can see, it's real quick. It takes just under a minute. All right, it looks like I'm in the clear. In a world where online
threats are becoming more and more sophisticated and
more and more ubiquitous, I think it's really
important that we have tools to protect our personal sensitive data and our online identities. And Surfshark VPN does just that. If you wanna give it a try,
you can get a special offer. If you use my code right here, all the details are in
the description box below. All right, safe surfing and
let's get back to the build. Let's finish this thing off. Okay, so here is the plan for today. We need to cut down these
big pieces at the top just to make sure that they
fit and slot in perfectly. Then we need to create some kind of compartment system inside the drawers. And then I need to cover
everything in a nice soft carpet. And then I think the build will be done. I think, I think? (gentle music) Ah, I pulled something
in my back last night when I was sleeping. I woke up with this raging pain. (Grandpa speaks foreign language) (Eva speaks foreign language) (Grandpa speaks foreign language) - Ah, okay.
(tool whirring) Ah. (Grandpa speaks foreign language) (tool whirring)
(gentle music) (tool scraping) - Okay, now we're gonna
try it on, see if it fits. It is so empowering to be able to even just try using a tool like that 'cause it makes you realize
that you could do like anything. You could do literally anything. (Eva speaks foreign language) Oh! (Eva speaks foreign language) (Grandpa speaks foreign language) - Ah, I got too excited too quickly. It doesn't fit yet. (gentle upbeat music)
(tools whirring) Ooh! (gentle upbeat music)
(tools whirring) You know, my way of
doing things is quickly. I definitely rush through life and through most things that I do. I just can't go slow and working with my grandpa, he is always constantly reminding me, slow down, (laughs) take it
easy, steady does the job. You know what he's so right. At the end of the day, we could probably all slow down a little bit. So, I'm really happy to have grandpa here, not just for the build, but to remind me that sometimes life is better in the slow lane. I broke it. Ugh. (drill whirring) Aha! No, it went through. It went through to the other side. Ugh.
(drill whirring) Aha, yes. (gentle music)
(drill whirring) (drill whirring) Okay, we're getting to the end. So next up, I need to cut out
little bits of this carpet, so that I can kind of
like insulate the drawers on the inside so that things
don't move around as much. Here are my measurements. Let's get cutting. (gentle music) Oh my God, I'm pretty
sure that these scissors are about a hundred years old. Very cool. (gentle music) It's time to glue. All right, here we go,
the moment of truth. Gentle. It worked. I feel like I've just added so much glue. I guess that's not a bad thing. Like too much glue, can't hurt. Too little glue, on the other
hand, that could be a problem. (gentle music) Look, I know I'm doing this all wrong. Probably making my life
a lot more difficult than it needs to be, but it works. This is the last piece. Oh yes, you fit so well, you fit so snug. Okay, the last bit that I
need to do is finalize the top and finalizing the top
includes screwing on these little doors so that I have a way to reach inside the middle compartment. I've got some latches here that I'm gonna screw on right now. As you can probably
tell, I did not do a very good (laughs) job at cutting these out. These are like so wonky. But you know what? That's fine. I'll always remember how
much fun I had making these. (gentle music)
(drill whirring) Look at that, I feel
like such a pro. (laughs) (gentle music)
(drill whirring) Ah ha! (hand bangs) Oh, shoot. (hand bangs) (hand bangs) Damn it. (chuckles) No way. (sighs) I guess we better get these out. So the problem was that
I left too big of a gap between like the edge of
this big piece of plywood and the little hatch.
(drill whirring) And so it won't close from
the other side. (chuckles) Well, I can fix this. Here we go. And it'll just fit real nice and snug. (drill whirring) Ha ha! Yes! (hands clapping)
High Five. Okay, I think grandma's
calling me over for lunch, so I'm gonna leave this piece be for now and go grab some food, and I'll come back to keep
working in a few minutes. Mm. (Eva speaks foreign language) (indistinct talking in distance) - Wow. I think we've got potato cakes today. (Eva speaks foreign language) (sniffs) Ah. Yes, that's exactly
what we're having today. (gentle upbeat music) (indistinct chatter in distance) - No. (gentle upbeat music) (Eva speaks foreign language) Huh. Mm. (upbeat music) (Eva laughs) (drill whirring) (drill whirring) (upbeat music) Almost done. I ended up asking grandpa
about these scissors and he said that my great-grandpa used to have them in his workshop. So they may not be a hundred, but they're definitely at
least half a century old. You know, the last pair of scissors that I bought broke after five uses. It's done. You wanna see? (laughs) All right, here is my new build. ♪ Da, Da, Da ♪ (hatch clatters) ♪ Da, Da ♪ I know it doesn't look
like much right now, but let me show you the vision. (laughs) (gentle upbeat music) Do, and two. (gentle upbeat music) And check this out so. I can sleep here. I can sleep here. I think we should bring
Vilk in for a little test. Okay, come on. Yes, good boy. (laughs) Do you like it? Do you like it? Oh my God, you like it. No, I'm being squished to death. Yeah, I think he likes
it, I think he approves. Okay, Bubba, can you down. Thank you. So I really love the fact that with a very simple conversion, I've increased the space
in the boot so much. There's so much storage right now. So there's all the storage in here, and then there's all the storage here. I think I didn't mount this properly, so this could be an issue. This little drawer kind of
gets a little bit sticky. That's fine. And then there's storage
underneath here as well. It's actually not finished yet, so I'm gonna be adding in a fridge. I'm gonna be adding in a
roof rack, some solar panels, and some other cool gadgets. But that's all coming
in a short little while. For now, I reckon we
should pack some food, pack some camping gear, a mattress, and some other stuff,
and then test her out, you know, out in the wild. So that's what I'm gonna
do in the next episode. But in the meantime, let's get
grandma and grandpa over here and see what they think. (laughs) I'm worried. (laughs) (Eva speaks foreign language) (Grandma speaks foreign language) (Grandpa speaks foreign language) (Eva laughs) Apparently I can go build a house. Well, I'm not sure about that, but yeah. (Eva speaks foreign language) (gentle music) (Grandpa speaks foreign language) (Eva laughs) - Well, mission complete, and in very good company. See you in the next episode. (gentle music)
