how's it going today everybody and welcome back to my channel shannon's mechanic life so i'm doing a bunch of work on this isuzu 7.8 liter air compressor exhaust manifold and a few other things and when i was pulling the manifold apart and remove the turbo i noticed that there's a bunch of oil on the intake there's a bunch of oil going into the intercooler the pipe going from the turbo to the intercooler outlet of the turbo as well as the inlet now natural instinct is to say this thing needs a turbo but that might not be the case you can go and buy a brand new turbo bolt it on and run it and have the same exact problem you may have issues outside the turbo that are causing it to leak oil whether it's the intake or the exhaust i'm going to show you what to look for and hopefully these little tips will save someone a lot of money and stop them from buying a turbo and having the same problem happen to them here we go [Music] [Applause] [Music] now basically your turbo is lubricated under pressure by your engine oil which is fed through the top circulated through the body and returns out the bottom through a hose or a pipe like this to the crank case any time you [Music] get a situation where too much oil pressure develops in the center housing it's going to find the path of least resistance and be you know out the exhaust side or the intake side or maybe even both so first thing you want going to want to check is your oil level you want to make sure it's not over full because if it's over full it could be feeding back up that drain tube causing a restriction and therefore causing the pressure to build up in that center section pushing oil out and also what you want to check is your oil pressure itself with the engine running look at your gauge and if that pressure is sky high you may have some other mechanical problem causing oil pressure to be too high which could push out through the turbo seals next thing you want to check is a return line some trucks like this one it's a metal return line other ones may be a just a hose so what you want to do is check it for damage you know kinks any restrictions and also look at the gasket surface when you take it off if there's a gasket and someone's piled a whole bunch of silicone on there or tv we all know what happens when you tighten it you know it squeezes out same thing could happen as it also squeezes in making this hole smaller which would also cause a restriction causing pressure to build up in your center section and causing a leak so check both ends of the return line whether it's a pipe or a hose and also uh if it's a hose you may have a blockage internally that you might not see so try uh you know flowing some oil through there or blowing through it see if there's a restriction as well check where the return line goes into the block for any build up of rtv or blockages now another thing that could be causing it to leak is too much blow-by or crankcase pressure if you got too much pressure in your crankcase by blow-by gases or stuff like that that may be enough restriction to cause the oil not to drain back properly so if you start it up and you've got a bunch of crankcase gases blowing through the oil cap or something like that that excess pressure will push oil out any gasket or seal like i said the path of least resistance so on these diesel engines there's a road draft tube or a pipe that comes out usually the valve cover and runs down to the bottom of the truck if you see a lot of fumes getting pushed out there that may be a sign that you've got too much crankcase pressure or also on the newer trucks there's a crankcase ventilation filter if that's clogged up that could also be causing too much pressure so here's a vent tube i was talking about it comes out the valve cover and runs down the side of the engine out to the bottom of the engine and vents out here what i've actually seen in the past is you know it's normal to get a little bit of oil drip i've actually seen trucks come in with bolts and stuff like that plugged in that hole because it was dripping or they think it's a leak and also another thing you need to check is that there's no kinks you know everybody's been working on something and it's in the way so you just kind of undo it tuck it out of the way or zip tie it to something and it could be kinked and that would cause your crankcase pressure to go sky high now it doesn't matter if your engine is gasoline powered or diesel all these tips are the same and i guide you in the right direction on what's causing your oil consumption or leak in the turbo now one of the easiest things you could probably check is your air filter if your air filter is restricted or very dirty your engine is going to be running and it's going to be starving for air and it's going to put a lot of vacuum on the system and that will suck oil right from that center section into the intake part of the turbo so check or replace your air filter and on a lot of the big trucks and diesel engines you've got an air restriction gauge now it should be down in the blue there's too much restriction that'll suck this up into the red now there's a button on this side you press that and it resets and that's where it should be so if your air restriction gauge is up into the red or even you know halfway definitely check your air filter so if you checked everything i've showed you and everything checks out okay then yeah you can be pretty comfortable in knowing that the it actually might just be the the seals themselves in the turbo that are leaking so at that point you can either order a new one or send it out for repair there are places around that will rebuild them for you might do it at a fraction of the cost of a new one so i hope the information in this video is helpful for you guys and i hope it definitely saved someone the cost of a new turbo just want to end the video with thanking one of my new subscribers javi lsu thanks for subscribing i really appreciate it let me know what you think in the comments section guys hit that like button and subscribe i got more videos coming anyway have a good night everybody in thanks for watching
