[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] it has been more than 700 days but we are back in madison wisconsin it is the 2021 noble crossfit games from the alliant energy center alongside the 2009 crossfit games champion tonya wagner amanda krenz is down on the field my name is joel cadet so glad to have you along with us in north park today already underway here at the 2021 crossfit games this is event number two for the first time ever tanya on the competition floor adaptive athletes we have three divisions in the adaptive group here and all three divisions will be doing a variation of this event which will be five rounds for time one rope climb and then five weighted pulls from the ground our lower extremity division will be doing a deadlift at 3 15 for the men our upper extremity division will be doing power snatches with a 100 pound dumbbell and the neuromuscular division will be doing deadlifts at 275 pounds all three divisions are going to be on the field of play in this first heat take a look at the lower extremity lane assignments to start things off only anton victorious in event one that was the run for these competitors this morning he also won the open for the men lower extremity division comes to the upper extremity casey acree was the victor in event one this morning he also qualified for the elite division quarterfinals this year despite being an upper extremity athlete here at the games and then sylvania herrera us army veteran in lane number 19. mikhail pedrini is the lone competitor from uruguay at the crossfit games any division here in 2021 we are so excited to welcome the adaptive division and these athletes to the formal competition this year for the first year you're going to see just a variety of abilities out on the floor some visible some not in our neuromuscular divisions so we'll talk through that as the as the competition unfolds we are underway here on event two this starts with this one legless rope climb and what's incredible is that down the course of zeus here you're going to watch athletes competing in the upper extremity division climb rope potentially with one hand and there they are on the dumbbell this is a 100 pound dumbbell power snatch and these athletes will need to determine some of them with both of our extremities will have to designate one arm that they are going to use for the full duration of the event you know joel a lot of consideration went into these events and coordinating and planning for fairness for a lot of these athletes and that is one of those considerations making the athletes choose one side it was fairness and also competition how do we make this as difficult as challenging and as clean a test as possible while also making it a level playing field considering the conditions for all of these athletes in each of these divisions barbell advancing through each of these rounds here so on to round three on the far side of the field for the athletes working through on the lower extremity division and there is casey acree climbing rope with one arm we told you though he qualified for the elite division quarterfinals that means he was able to do wall walks and you know i think joel to that point i love that this division is now competitive with uh showing it these athletes who've been to the games and we've seen these incredible adaptive athletes just showcase their abilities and it's a really neat way for the community and for everyone to see what's going and happening at the affiliate level the athletes that are not just participatory they are competitive here and i love that they can showcase their competitive abilities and we're seeing that on the floor continuing to work through these deadlifts in lane three ali kristen antonson who again was victorious in event number one logan aldridge who is one of the leaders in adaptive training for coaches across both the country and the world logan aldridge competing at the crossfit games for the first time here this year actually co-founded what's called the adaptive training academy where instructors can go to learn how to work with adaptive athletes when they walk into your gym see aldridge in the middle of your screen there walking that dumbbell forward he's currently in second place chasing casey acree important to note out here there are three different divisions competing in this heat so you're looking actually at three separate competitions all on the floor here upper extremity lower extremity and neuromuscular there's a hundred points on the line in each of those divisions in this particular heat that's why these athletes really just need to be aware of those other athletes in their division and with an event that's so taxing on the grip here it is important to make sure when you're going to commit to that rope that you're ready this is a six minute time capped event casey acree just smoked it three minutes and six seconds unofficially for casey acree the 28 year old just dominant and he'll be followed in the neuromuscular category by brett horcher that of crossfit cmx athletics in gibsonia pennsylvania so those are your first two now here comes aldridge as well he'll finish in the upper extremity division his snatch is 150 pounds pr so that was 50 pounds below that that was with a barbell too so think about that for a hot second 100 pounds on those dumbbell snatches for logan aldridge as we take you back to only christian anton in the lower extremity division 30 year old he's competing out of norway [Applause] and anne thompson with the fist pump he was victorious in the open in this division and he is done in just over four minutes [Music] time cap is just over 90 seconds away and there we talked about some of these athletes do have use of both of their arms however range of motion issues could be a reason that you compete in the upper extremity division that is indeed the case for maldonado he had to choose one arm to execute this entire event with and he finishes in 4 44. so about a minute left to go here in this opening heath also consider these deadlift weights tanya talking about 315 pound deadlifts for the lower extremity division when we look at those loads you know and that's so impressive to see the athletes out there with lower extremity uh being able to pull on those loads you know we said about consideration for the competition and uh his consideration given to some of the athletes what they're doing but this just shows what they're capable of doing giving this a second event and they're already pulling on that heavy load out of ecuador victor castro finishes in the upper extremity division 30 seconds left here until the time cap back in the lower extremity division this is felipe maturana infante out of koriko in chile actually found crossfit because of his condition when his leg was injured in a motorcycle accident that's what brought him to crossfit and now that has brought him to the crossfit games as we get a finish just under the cap here the final couple of seconds for sabi osamendez and that brings our second event of the day for the men's adaptive division to its conclusion [Applause] second of three events for both the men's and women's adaptive athletes here on day one of the 2021 noble crossfit games it's so exciting for these athletes to be able to be in the inaugural competition and getting to put name out there and you know be get to show other athletes out there that you know they have a place to be competitive here at the crossfit games pretty dominating first day two event wins for kca cree he is down with amanda casey i want to hear first about the rope climbs and how you train those well as someone with one hand that was a movement that really took a long time to develop i'm just lucky that it's just been a long process that i've been patient with and i train them frequently i try to just do a lot of high volume work with them mix them in with aerobic work and just make sure my shoulders and my and my hand is staying healthy so that i can um you know really grip the rope and and use my legs a lot on those to you know make those fast and efficient so far you've had two tests here at the crossfit games i know it's early on but how are you feeling about the competition so far um i feel really good i'm definitely getting a push from the other guys i was lucky enough also to win um event one this morning uh it's it's been good so far and i'm just kind of taking it one one event at a time once i get done with one just trying to focus on the next one thanks casey thank you amanda thank you casey akery thank you as well two event victories first two events ever for the adaptive athletes here at the crossfit games for casey a creek three minutes and four almost three minutes and five seconds for acree then aldridge right behind him it's gonna be a really fun race between those two i love that he you know said he's getting the push that's really exciting in the heat of five you know five in your division to know that you're gonna have that competition we're gonna see that race and see that push throughout the weekend is awesome so acree first aldridge comes in second for the men's upper extremity the women's division coming up now here for event number two and again three divisions here there are eight divisions total in the open when it came to the adaptive divisions three of them here competing for you at the crossfit games here in 2021 back to the event description we have changed the weights a little bit here for the ladies 205 pounds for the lower 55 pounds on the upper extremity and then 175 pounds for the neuromuscular tanya at the end of the day though it's still a lot of work and it fun uh it depends on your perspective this is good this little sprint couplet really is a lot all about pulling and just testing the capacity of their pulling ability that strength and that endurance that they have lane assignments here in event number two for the women start with the women's lower extremity amy breme in the middle is a kickboxer she has one leg found crossfit actually because of the adaptive divisions just started crossfit in january she is now here upper extremity elizabeth bride was the event one winner played field hockey at hamilton college in new york and rebecca shingledecker here for the women in neuromuscular is a marathon runner she has run 14 more than me 10 seconds five seconds until the beginning of event number two here for the women in the adaptive division and we are underway for this sprint couplet here at the 2021 nobel crossfit games for these rope climbs the ladies will be climbing up to that 20-foot height i apologize up to the 15-foot height there for these athletes 20 feet to the top of zeus you'll see a tape mark as these athletes climb the rope that's the 15 foot mark but they have to climb up to hit here now 30 seconds in two different strategies in the barbell going on broken on the left and then there was breaking up you know it's a smart move to break up early if you know that fatigue will set in and these athletes have to attack it the way they are best able to and there's a lot of pulling you want to make sure you get back to that rope and when you commit to it that your grip is going to be there and you don't have too much fatigue that's why i was just going to take you is this a grippy workout 100 you know and that's the thing if you can get caught up in those nerves being side by side you're on the competition floor the main floor so it's really easy to forget that you need to break that up and in any five round event or workout that you do at the gym you know round three is the test did you hold on too much did you push too hard early so i think it's smart when you see athletes um that have that wherewithal to pause and drop the barbell early they you know they know their abilities they know what they have to to do to be successful on the road valerie cullen was the winner of event number one for the lower extremity athletes here spent three years as a collegiate gymnast tore her achilles for the second time at the end of her career and a post-operation infection actually led to an emergency surgery it kept her from walking for two years here she is with an event win and a heat lead right now a minute and 45 seconds in and we have it in the adaptive divisions you're going to have athletes that were born with some limitations and then you have other athletes that have had injury and for someone you know that has been in on the competitive floor and then an injury happens it's awesome to know you can get back out there and there is a place for you to compete again at a high level and be able to show showcase all that you're still able to do that's the thing that so many of these athletes have talked about is being able to push through that initial roadblock you know in valerie's case in particular you're a captain of your college gymnastics team competing at such a high level and being able to push through and say i can still do everything i've ever done before and now do it on the stage that we're all so used to looking at here at the crossfit games elizabeth bride is on the left she won event number one for the upper extremity athletes also a collegiate athlete played field hockey at hamilton college in clinton new york now hell's from just outside boston that midway through this workout that is a 55 pound single arm no alternating dumbbell snatch that's a heavy weight under any circumstances it sure is and you know under the fatigue of that just being able to use that one arm especially if you have the capacity to use them both typically you probably would be practicing that alternating so it is a lot of demand constantly and that will be it obviously will affect when you get to that road your grip and that tax on that one side it is valerie cohen from the lower extremity division who has to go just a little bit further she crossed the first line and now the finish line so valerie cohen is victorious in under three minutes and 30 seconds her second event win and as many tries so there's your leader right now with 200 points the points table goes from 100 down to 15 for a first through fifth place finish these are three separate competitions that you're looking at all happening at the same time between the upper lower and neuromuscular divisions and back to the zeus here for another rope climb as bride was finishing with her snatches we talked about you know these lanes being tight we talked off air about you know they're side by side so it is awesome when you're competing right next to someone and they're staying with you it really does give you the push and that competitive feel of uh you know the pressure to move on especially after the year that many of us have had that's true and for i mean quite literally in this division you haven't competed in a live setting before everything has been online in terms of qualifications so the chance to come out here on the competition floor and throw down this is sabrina lopez on these single arm 55 pound dumbbell snatches and as this event continues to wear on tanya you saw athletes go unbroken in round one it gets grippy and the fatigue you know it sets in you'll see some rounding here of her back she's not loading the legs as much as she could but you know last reps it's about speed and just getting the dumbbell overhead finishing your reps you can sprint through all the way from burn switzerland sabrina lopez has finished event two with a minute to go [Applause] abby isbill out of new bruns texas and shannon ogar now finishing down in the neuromuscular division from englewood colorado with 5 20 left to go there's your marathoner we touched on beforehand rebecca shingledecker [Music] inside 30 seconds left to go here in the event and we still have three athletes out on the floor currently engaged in dead lifting keep in mind you're dead lifting on the turf so you don't necessarily have that firm surface below you a little bit different but you know i i love that we're seeing the athletes on the field in years past we saw age group divisions be in their own separate locations so just the energy and the crowd and the fans behind them out in the main stands uh it's a really cool energy for everyone to be out here event number two in the books for the adaptive athletes here at north park and another successful round for elizabeth bride not only has she come out and performed well at 44 years old this is the adaptive division it spans all ages she's the oldest out here and she's crushing it and that's something we didn't touch upon you know being the first year it there is just so much potential for the adaptive division for where it can go with other abilities and then also other ages and so that's what's really neat to get to see but again it reminds me of what you see at the affiliate at your affiliates every single day of who's competing in all abilities and ages valerie cohen has the greatest win percentage in crossfit games history she's down with amanda krenz valerie and i were just talking about the impact that event one had on you coming into event two tell me about that yeah so the first workout was like all lats and so then you come here and you added rope climbs there's like more or less so i definitely felt like fatigued from the first workout but um it was so fun i enjoyed it the commentators were talking about the grippiness of this workout was that something you thought about coming into it i didn't think about that actually but yeah that was huge still a great performance valerie good job thank you amanda thank you valerie cohen another event win here at the crossfit games you know it's interesting to hear the perspective of how these athletes approach each event and for her to say hey in hindsight yeah that actually that was a big deal actually it was that was tax and those athletes for the lower extremity division did a ski or for their first event so that was a little different so um you know the taxing of the lats absolutely something that was going to be taxed but their grip for short on that ski arc as well we'll move on to the age groups next men's 60 to 64 is coming up that used to be the highest end of the age groups here at the crossfit games it is now the penultimate division with the addition of 65 plus that's a new change here in 2021 it's a new change it's a competitive division because those athletes have been competing for a long time and so i think it was appropriate to bump that age group up the event will be the same it is this sprint couplet of the deadlifts and the rope climb that is coming your way next from north park here in madison uh [Music] [Music] so so so [Music] so [Music] you're looking at north park here in madison wisconsin the alliant energy center it is event two of the age groups men's 60 to 64 division at the 2021 noble crossfit games alongside amanda krenz and tanya wagner joel gadette we have one crossfit games championship between the three of us getting set for event number two after the run this morning for these individuals this is a sprint coupling spring couplet of rope climbs to a 20-foot rope and then five deadlifts and the deadlift weight for these gentlemen is gonna be 255 pounds they have four rounds for their age division not five as we'll see in the other heats uh but these athletes it's all about pooling is the name of the game for this event it's pulling on the rope it's pulling on the deadlift as we take a look at the lane assignments michael wall is part of a couple here his wife rose is also competing at these crossfit games carl jafre qualified last year finally able to compete here this year touch on will powell in the middle here in just a second page number two cal charington is a football coaching legend back home rolando gonzalez one of a couple chileans competing in the masters divisions on both the men's and women's sides here in 2021 will powell he is as consistent as matt fraser tia toomey and rich frohning at these crossfit games he is definitely the veteran in this field of competition this is his eighth master's appearance and three of the times he was here he took first place in his divisions it's the first time we're seeing him in the 60 to 64 division he was second out of the age group online qualifier he was uh is first of the rankings of the athletes that are competing here at the crossfit games underway for event two it starts with the rope climb these athletes are allowed to use those legs in this division [Music] affiliate owners be sure to check out your affiliate portal to get access to affiliate exclusive opportunities that includes access to join the waitlist for round tables programming and the affiliate playbook crossfit affiliates what i love you know about seeing all of the athletes in your division on the field of play you know exactly where you are in this event you know other times when you have multiple eats you always are wondering what people are going to do after you you get to watch before but here you know exactly where you are so as much as you need to stay in your lane and sprint this one out you also need to have the wherewithal to peak and just kind of know where you are in the competition well powell leading the front of the pack here competing in his eighth consecutive crossfit games he's already shown a lot of confidence a lot of that sprint in between the ropes straight to the bar [Music] with one rope climb it you know it's great if you have that that confidence and that ability to jump right up now joel this is the first time we're seeing a 20-foot rope climb um and that is exciting for these athletes at this age to be tested and to still get that surprise element like we are used to seeing in the crossfit games that they are still getting a surprise element also it may be just one more pull for some of them two more but if you're not used to practicing that over the course of that five rounds and all these deadlifts it can play a factor in your grip and the fatigue that's what i was going to ask if you're so used to the sense of relief at 15 feet of saying i'm there what happens when you add those five more feet into the rope climb forgot to advance the bar so move that thing down for alan boyce and john crow they are on the fringes here that's john crow in lane two alan boyce is in lane 18. one of the interesting things of day one you can get attacked from anywhere usually your leaders are in the middle of the field but that still has to sort itself out they did not reseed the heat for event too so know where these athletes are on the field of play has nothing to do with the first event it actually has to do with where they placed and we're in their qualifying time in the online qualifier well will powell needed like no time at all to do this i laugh in the face of your six minute time cap will powell if he wanted to could have been done in two minutes and 10 seconds 2 30 for him to finish we've got a race down though at the bottom of your screen john crowe in lane two in lane three randy lane this thing is like the marathon finish everyone's coming through carl jeffrey in under 2 45. [Applause] i think we've got a time to beat idea for all these athletes going forward somewhere between 230 and 255 the flood gates opened and that shows you just the abilities how close everyone is but i really think for will powell it was just you know it came down for him to the experience that he has most of these athletes first second a few a handful of them with three uh games graham's appearances but eighth time here he knows the go time what that feeling is what it feels like to have the nerves to have everybody side by side [Music] he just dominated that randy lane back from rotator cuff surgery so a pulling assignment especially with the rope climbs that's sometimes difficult to do but a couple of surgeries later he is back at the crossfit games from tucson arizona and done in a more than respectable three minutes and 45 seconds because tanya i'd still be on round two it's just it's so impressive to watch these guys just move and you know the capacity that they can move how they can sprint through you know we didn't know what the 20-foot rope plan was going to be like for him no problem we got that checking off the list so uh you know and i'm sure that's all the programmers are taking notes there too and they just make the adjustments each year um and it's awesome to see what these guys are capable of doing the georgian bobby slayton crosses and with that we clear the field in four minutes and 17 seconds it took two thirds of the event for everyone to finish it was really willpower from the start showing that confidence he was very quick in all of his transitions uh smooth to the bar and he held on for all of them he really treated this spring couplet exactly as it needed to be no uh bobbles or you know errors in his execution the speed he needed to be was ahead of everyone he was well ahead of everyone else but it did look like he taxed himself you know and went beyond what he needed to in this event so really great start for will showing his experience that he's had here at the games for the first of many times this year will powell is with amanda will you said coming into this you knew it would be a sprint yes how did it feel once you were actually out there on the competition like i envisioned it i knew that the 255 wasn't enough to be a separator on the deadlift especially with five uh reps so i knew that to get ahead it would be a dash between the deadlift and the rope so the transition was was uh was key how does your experience play into this and and make you better as a competitor well you know one of the things that i'm able to do after done after doing this so much is to be able to estimate how much time it's going to take for each movement didn't estimate the transition time then i can tell you know what energy systems am i going to use am i going to go anaerobic or am i going to you know slow it down and move so i knew that this was going to be totally anaerobic just go all out and be be safe your experience is paying off well yeah have you done this a couple tasks thank you thank you congrats to will powell and thanks to amanda we got all sciencey there we're talking aerobic anaerobic breaking down the body will powell in two minutes and 29 seconds beats out christian gayley who comes in second pinpointed rolando gonzalez before we started he comes in fourth saw john crow have to go back and advance that barbell that may have cost him at the end of it you're looking at i mean 10 seconds would have vaulted him all the way up into fifth ahead of carl jeffrey so sometimes like will just talked about it's timing out your transitions and doing little things top 10 of 20 and event number two for the men 60 to 64. men's 65 plus is our next event here at north park [Music] do [Music] for the first time ever we have a 65 plus division here with the age groups at the 2021 noble crossfit games this is event number two tonya wagner it is a rope climb it is deadlifts and then it's run to the finish for this division the athletes are going to actually do four rounds of one rope climb to the 20-foot target and then their five deadlifts at 255 pounds for the men's 60 65 plus division there's a six minute time cap just as there are for all the other divisions in this event such a great opportunity to expand the field and create some opportunities with this 65 plus division it keeps people around the game longer it also gives people an opportunity to break in though we have nine of these 20 competitors making their crossfit games debut here today some athletes that are not making their debut though and have been here for a while is that name in lane 9 david hippensteil no here for his eighth appearance i mean he stood up top the podium in the 60-plus division three three years in a row so another alley that has a ton of experience out here in the master's division even though this is a new division with 65 plus george koch and ken ogden who both competed at the masters fitness collective championships last year which kind of took the place of an age groups at the crossfit games ken ogden was victorious in a 65-plus division at that competition a year ago so a chance now to do it on this stage the grandest of them all in fitness there is david hippensteil who aged up into the 65 plus division this year he did and it's exciting you get to have the other competitors that you've competed with but then you also get to see a new field of athletes too um to kind of join and know that there's a place for them so um i'm anxious to watch you know it's been a few years these athletes when they're at their age they don't know how many more years they're gonna have left before injury you're just wanting to stay in the in the game i love that we're still seeing david after all these years he's the number two seed but with his history the prohibitive favorite here in 2021 and to the ropes for these athletes [Music] our coverage today is brought to you in part by cbd md it's the cbd you can trust visit cbdmd.com crossfit and use the promo code crossfit to get 30 off of your order today that's cbd md and right to the deadlifts and tanya as well powell talked about after the first event it's the transitions we just see that little hiccup for david hip and steel but also the deadlifts not being heavy enough to be a separator and you can see david hiffenstein just easily move through them the devils aren't a separator but joel you know i also want to note these 20-foot rope climbs that you know we're seeing the first time for any masters division and right away even though in the 65 plus we're seeing you do see you will see some other adjustments or we see that it's four rounds instead of five we're not seeing a change there you know with their height hip and steel right back to the deadlifts here on round two you can see the way that he descended the rope there is no requirement other than a controlled descent and time he looked like a firefighter on a 3 a.m call just let go the hands a little bit and slide down to the bottom that is a veteran move right there that is how all of the athletes here who are competitive with rope climbs descend the rope it is still under control but you know he has to make up some time on that first hiccup because he forgot to advance the bar that's a very unusual mistake for someone who is such a veteran but sometimes when you are first in your heat you're you're the one setting up the next move everybody's watching you advance the bar he wasn't watching anyone ahead of them hip and steel is towards the front of the pack he is not at the front of the pack however there's your leader right now john perry out of green fire crossfit in indiana pennsylvania he has a piano restoration aficionado i'm not sure if that comes into play on this field but i do appreciate the skill john perry is the leader george koch in lane 12 right behind and then david hippensteil in lane three there is george koch the collegiate professor out at northern arizona utilizing that same slide technique [Music] 66 years of age george makes his crossfit games debut here this year we touched on it with the adaptive athletes what is the fact you don't have a lifting platform do for you here pushing off of the cushy turns yeah it's a little bit different you just don't have that same footing but i'm actually you know i'm also thinking through that first event with the run and just that their legs are under some fatigue we did see the athletes cross the finish line under some duress so yeah i'm sure that played a factor too george cook got off of the bar first but we've got a race and he may be beat to the finish line no george cook had a little bit left [Applause] trying to chase down an event win i actually think he got edged out at the end that may have been john perry who comes up with the victory down in lane four but it was perry and then cook here at the finish line and trying to eke out a cross at the end every second matters here around the 3 30 mark it doesn't matter what division you're in there still is the sprint to the finish line that's what you love to see when the competition is so close oh the compete gene doesn't fade sure doesn't lewis finishes marshall delk is done out of santa cruz california take a look at marv willard out of winterhaven florida still working on those deadlifts and we still have time here about a minute 45 left until the cap as these athletes try to work in underneath of that cap brett wilson has drawn the i can't imagine favorite crossfit games number of 666 this week get the number you're given um but you know i was going to mention you know as he finishes without anyone around you the feeling that this event um the toll it takes on your legs is much different if you stroll across the line rather than that sprint that finish of all out [Applause] ted ledger out of elizabethtown tennessee he didn't have to push that hard but he still did there was nobody there by him but that's just the way he wanted to finish up strong and willard now able to come across [Music] mar villard out of winter haven florida retired chemical engineer and it looks like the deadlifts have taken their toll here on donald bring back [Music] and you can see where the deadlifts start to stack up where these athletes are pulling fives early and then you just go start to pull ones here trying to work their way through and it's clearly not an issue of capacity because he's on round four it's a matter of volume the fatigue is just set in his legs he just looks like he's not able to recruit the legs the muscles the muscles in his legs there that he wants to and it's just hitting all of that in his back [Music] made one more valiant effort to finish another deadlift but we hit the six minute time cap and we have a handful of athletes capped in this 65 plus division 6064 we did not it'll be interesting to see and it's always curious to see what goes through the mind of dave castro and team in terms of where they set caps and what their intent is on whether not they want people to be able to finish or whether or not they want people to get capped and be doing the work i don't know whether the word is once but you know you do you you want a good competition and an event that you're seeing majority of your athletes finish but you're also testing at the same time so you will inevitably have that especially when you're bringing in new movements it started with david hippensteil in the lead off chair he does finish near the front of the pack in the top three but he was pushed early on by some other athletes in john perry but this is where that was where hipaa steel forgot to advance the bar costly seconds but perry had a clean move with his rope climbs he was fast in his transitions fast on the way down in the rope was smart here with his singles toward the end of the end of the event just to preserve the legs in his low back had that sprint to the finish and a really nice race even from the other athletes but well executed john perry is able to hold off george koch and oh that little brief head turn second coke thought the first line he got to it midfield was the line to beat and that is what allows john perry to come across we missed that in the live action but uh seeing that on replay those little costly uh errors that oh that that's that explains the sprint transitions all about everything else down to amanda john that was close did you have any idea how close it was at the end just running i was just running get the end and you said you've already done so much running this morning and now here you go well it was it was a good run at the end let me tell you i like grill climbs and i like deadlifts so i was i was happy as i could be tell me about that because that is you're pulling up the rope you're pulling the barbell up for deadlifts was that something you planned out in your head and how that would feel yeah like i said i'm fairly successful at road climbs and uh just it's just a matter of technique and doing it for a number of years and the deadlifts are just currently working i love it a great job out there thank you so much thank you thanks john amanda thank you have a good day john he calls this adult recess recess is in order john perry an event victory in the men's 65 plus division coming up we'll move it down to the teenagers get our first look today at the 14 and 15 year olds here in madison [Music] we are underway here for the boys 14 and 15 year olds their first rather second competition here at the north park today working on their first rope climb and then out to the deadlift bar tanya we saw four rounds with the 65 plus men we've upped the difficulty now to a fifth and final round for the teams five rounds but they're doing the exact same loading on the barbell at 255 pounds they also are doing that 20-foot rope but this time it's legless so these boys cannot use their legs and most of them having no problem at all with that you know the name of the game here is all speed and energy for these guys there's just a lot of energy they've been waiting to get out on the field that's the second push brother to compete at the crossfit games you saw gustavo his brother lucas was here in 2018. now through sunday august 1st redeem a free pair of noble performance socks with your purchase over 99 head to nobleproject.com crossfit and use the code games at checkout to redeem those socks today uh you know an experience so i expect to see some of those little bottles little errors of the small things joel it's not gonna be the movement it's gonna be the transitions it's gonna be where to take the equipment sometimes the energy the excitement you can miss those small details that can be really costly it was interesting to see push go with the double kip at the top of the rope there the alessandra pacelli because it used to be one kip to get you to the top he had to use a second there with the additional height and that's the thing if you're not practicing that or your gym doesn't have the height to go that distance it's maybe something these guys haven't practiced before doesn't seem to be giving a much of an issue at all he is through four rounds here in just over two minutes gustavo push trying to pick up an event win here at the noble crossfit games and this is a smart hot second before he goes for this final legless rope one of the keys to the event is commit to your climb when you're ready and that's just what he's doing here not rushing it he knows that the only person behind him is isaiah weapon so look in your peripherals then start climbing he's still in the lead as long as he doesn't fail and because that rope climb previous where he had to use that kit you know you know where your fatigue level is at going to pull out he's trying now he's getting the crown behind him he's pumped he's here to play [Applause] and this is easy five touch and go reps for gustavo push touch and go and go he wants some noise here at the north park that's an event winning just over three minutes all the way from sao paulo brazil that's a competitor right there he's not shy isaiah webber is right behind him the second one to these deadlifts he's had a crossfit kinesis the protege of kyle casper bauer former crossfit games elite podium finisher masters champion isaiah webber will come in in a distant second not to the leader but to the rest of the field those two guys have smoked everyone else and he just looks he looks very disciplined very composed he looks like his coach like dead straight face i'm here to win here and there's nobody else deadlifting yet in the fifth and final round and you've got two guys done what does that tell you you know i mean here's one of those things for those two it gives you a lot of confidence it gives you a lot of all right we know where our place is and that's exciting for them for the rest of the field we get to see now at their ages mentally what do they do because physically you're your own box you're training you're competing online this is live who can bring their game day face who can bring that mental capacity and it's exhausting before you even get here all the nerves all the anticipation and so sometimes this right here could be the wake-up call for some of them they go too hot did they push the first event a little too hard or do they just need to find a different speed and a different tempo well and you get no points for winning by more there's no other heats this is it so there are still points to be had there's still a third place finish out there and kaden myers says give it to me regardless of the gap he's going to get the third place points and caden myers all the way from the electric factory in south carolina is done inside five minutes got 50 seconds left until the cap here and now our fourth athlete makes his way out to round five here on these deadlifts nice setup real strong midline using these legs [Music] but that loading is heavy one of the two brothers as he races to the finish line he'll get in under the cap his younger brother is competing in the 14-15 age group excuse me older brothers in the 16-17 age group this week 15 seconds left to the cap a chance to sprint across but you've got to run we're going to get some athletes to finish here and with five seconds to spare we're gonna get about half the field in inside the cap that is nathan quant by the way younger brother of sam gustavo push it was all his show the spotlight was on him from the beginning he came out like a firecracker right up that rope he showed you know his wisdom already at such a young age to take a breather before his final rope climb knowing that the fatigue was setting in on his fourth rope climb but when he went back to the bar for the fifth time it was all he could do he wanted to play the crowd he knew this was his event no pressure on him he's going to eat this up he hammed it up on the field let's see if gustavo hams it up down with amanda i mean you liked that celebration right like you were really enjoying that moment and good for you you talked to me just a moment ago about the rope clients tell me about what technique you studied before today yeah so about yesterday i learned from my coach bernardo no way to go down like a firefighter so i couldn't practice this now it was really good i i think i won this workout because of it because the deadlift it was heavy but heavy for everyone so the rope climb was the difference for me yeah looking ahead to the rest of the competition and just being here at the crossfit games what is this like for you it's it's crazy it's crazy being the crossfit games winning workouts is crazy more crazy than that you know so i'm really happy i'm really proud of me because i trained a lot to come here so that's it thank you family thank you thank you so much thank you amanda gustavo push i like that he trains it to go down the rope like a firefighter that's the mentality they have it's the path of least resistance to get back down to the ground safely it's a victory for gustavo push here in event number two women 60 to 64. they're coming up next here at north park in madison [Music] [Music] the toys [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the 2021 noble crossfit games are presented by crossfit the world's leading platform for health happiness and performance wit have you got whatever it takes ram trucks the only truck ran to win motor trend truck of the year three years in a row and by a rusty remote recovery empowering crossfit athletes to eliminate pain and get back in the box fast it's event two here at the north park madison wisconsin for the women age group 60 to 64 here at the 2021 noble crossfit games amanda krenz is down on the field joel cadet first there was julie gentry then katie henniger and tonya wagner in the crossfit games championship annals on the women's side tanya this is a sprint couplet as we've said throughout the afternoon it's the rope climb it's the deadlifts but the transitions are big too positions are huge for this it's going to be four rounds actually for this division of women they're going to do one rope climb it still is a 20-foot target and then they have the five deadlifts at 175 pounds there are 20 lanes although not necessarily 20 competitors across each of the age groups patricia claro was 23rd out of the age group online qualifier but she makes her crossfit games debut with her husband who competes on the men's side susan clark has been oh so dominant throughout her crossfit games career she has a handful of championships under her belt donna bruce was victorious at the masters fitness collective championships last year which sort of took the place with no age groups at the crossfit games then lynn napman has been to each of the 73 crossfit games that have existed for masters all 11. of them she's been to she's been too and in dominant fashion you know she started out in that 50 year old division and so she's one of those athletes that we're seeing who has just crossed the age divisions five years you get in each division you move yourself up she knows there's a division waiting for her in the 65 plus to come to so all those years of experience and getting to see the growth of this sport in the masters divisions is very exciting so i'm anxious to see what lynn is going to do here today in this event stand by and this is event two underway for the women's 60 to 64. unlock yourself with personalized sleep recovery and strain insights from who head to whoop.com crossfit and receive 30 off of your membership that's whoop.com [Music] crossfit some of these ladies showing a nice fast transition running right off the platform or right off the crash pad straight to the barbell that is exactly what you have to do many of them taking a little slower speed on the way down the rope we've got just some absolutely incredible speed by susan clark in lane nine we talked about transitions look at her get back to the barbell already this is not a spring couplet of the movements this is just a sprint for her [Music] and the confidence that she's showing here on the barbell i mean 175 is not that heavy she's looking very confident not even a sniff of breaking there and she only knows how to win you can do the math there four championships this is her fifth crossfit game's appearance she has never been beaten 20 14 15 17 and 19. told us she swore she retired actually told the morning chalk up that she swore she retired and then kobet happened she had nothing else to do so she got back into crossfit plan was to travel the world instead she traveled back to madison wisconsin and when you're training with the title there years in a row there's an expectation there's a level that you just want to bring and she is she's bringing it so clark is in first place just heading back to the rig on the left of your screen is second place and it's a distant second place patricia mcgill out of crossfit lindsay is in third place and then she'll head back in lane six here's we have the two minute mark clark's urgency to the bar even you know if there's not a lot of pressure i'd love to see that urgency staying within your window that is as fast four rounds flies by susan clark just smoked event two that's an event victory for the native of fort vancouver she moved so well so efficient [Music] and she finished in what's on your 2 2 10 ish bianca williams [Applause] in lane seven racing to the finish line and that's gonna be a 25 32nd win for susan clark here at event two you get no bonus points for the gap of your victory you just get jaws you have to pick up off the floor inside three minutes for patricia mcgill to finish this is sue lawson now [Applause] and we've got a foot race [Applause] in lanes 14 and 15 corwin and olsen and it's litza olsen out of crossfit marysville that finishes you don't get points for the gap you beat somebody by but you do get points if you can leg them out and you've seen some people trying to earn some points on some races down the finish and christine long out of ajax ontario and crossfit living the dream that is an apt name for her week saunters across still inside four minutes we saw all of the men finish in this age group inside the six minute time cap the women are doing their best to mimic that here [Applause] [Music] and elizabeth cole here in lane 19. will cross singles on the barbell a smart move when there's no pressure around you to avoid any injury she had her belt locked in tight she knows it's a long week of competition many events ahead and you know preserving your body here at the end is part of being able to last through any competition especially at the crossfit games there's a lot coming your way the athletes know about they don't know about and so you know you have to be smart and know that even if you're gonna blow one event and you're not gonna be the best you gotta be smart you don't wanna damage your chances of any of the other events this is one of my favorite women here patricia claro her husband is rodrigo dominguez competes at the crossfit games this year and before she is the only woman who competed in the open over the age of 50. she wanted the opportunity to compete amongst her peers where did she have to go to do that she had to get to madison wisconsin and a chance for patricia claro she finishes here in event number two that's exciting that's that's super cool literally the fittest woman in chile because she's the only one willing to take on the test exactly and she gets to now feel you know this is only going to elevate her game going back getting a chance to compete with other athletes seeing the capacity that they have and that they're capable of she will take that back and no doubt be even better when she goes back to train yeah hopefully bring along some friends with you as well and grow the masters division as we take a look at how event two broke down and uh this was breakdown's not the right word 62-year-old susan clark she was just in a league of her own here in this event she just cruised right up the road um really just smart through her transitions strong on the barbell she wasted no time really was aggressive and just saw some tenacity from her and just you know showing her dominance in years past through this just a classic little couplet um but just moved so well just getting that confirmation but even spread it right across she's just soaking it in i didn't think i was gonna be here but i am i thought i retired thought i was done we will say this many times this week amanda has susan clark this probably won't surprise you guys that susan loves rope climbs before we talk about that though congratulations on your 19th masters event win here at the crossfit games were you keeping track of that whatsoever no you were the one who told me that that's awesome yeah amazing so lucky so tell me about the rope climbs you you love them why because my very first crossfit games which was i think 2014 i couldn't rope climb i literally skidded from the top took all my fingertips off and it was just driven that i that was an improvement and worked really hard and now i love them so take a bad experience and make it into something good and kind of how it worked out it was a tough lesson learned on the competition floor at the end as you're spreading to the finish you look from side to side there's nobody around you did you have any idea how far ahead you were no like that play into your into your strategy at all not really because i think that all of us you just give it everything you have so you know if you really are giving it everything you have it doesn't matter where everybody else is because you're full out and i think that happens more and more the run for example this morning i didn't even know where the run was and then when they took us back to the pavilion i realized we were crossing you know the path we always walk i think you're really in the in the moment yeah great job out there thank you so much thank you great thank you now when you win a lot of crossfit games you win a lot of crossfit events 19 of them now for susan clark she does it in 22 seconds difference [Music] okay that's remarkable difference between first and second was the difference between second and third no second and fifth yeah crushed it 65 plus for the women is the next age bracket heading out onto the north park field here in madison [Music] first time we have ever had the 65 plus division for the women here at the crossfit games and this is actually a grouping that does have all 20 slots filled here this week full competition with four rounds on this particular age group for time one rope clan they're allowed to use their legs and then five deadlifts at 175 pounds the ladies there's a six minute time cap they just got a chance to watch the younger age group go and so they got a little bit of an idea of what that's going to feel like and look like for them but it's going to all be all about their own strategies and how they kind of transition through the two movements lane assignments for the women 65 plus zadia popolink who made some interesting headlines this week when she met her idol coming to madison mary schwing said she was a volunteer mary schwing is this year in lane nine said i saw you many years ago at the games and decided i was going to do this here they are on the same heat sheet for event number two lydia beer in lane 11 is a name to keep an eye on betty hardin was victorious at the masters fitness collective with no crossfit games for the masters a year ago about 20 seconds until the start time here as these women attempt the first rope climb talk about rope climbs in just a second with what susan clark told us following her victory in the last heat we are underway here for what is a legged rope climb in this age division working her way up in lane number one eight is the official recovery beverage of the crossfit games for twenty percent off plus free shipping during the games visit fitaid2020.com free shipping is valid for the us canada europe and australia moving these dead lift bars forward you head back to the rope here tanya when you talk about masters athletes sometimes and susan clark told us hey i didn't have climbs even when i got to the games how difficult a movement can this be to pick up and learn especially when you're in these ages you know the pull on the rope is so different than the barbell there's just a different position for your hands for your grip there's a lot more involved and so if these athletes haven't been doing these road climbs it's something you do need to work on at the 20 foot height being able to hold on and just that time under tension for your grip and for your arms if you're not used to it it's something that you need to practice you can't get that movement anywhere else no matter how strong you are on the barbell it just seems to be one of those moves that people have to practice and they do but it's something that we've seen for many years and so if you think you're going to get to the crossfit game and not see it or have one of your weaknesses and it not kind of be exposed then you're fooled and uh but a lot of these athletes using the traditional leg um the leg wrap or the j hook but the combination that i see with the deadlift bar and just having this be the first time we're seeing these ladies with a couplet with traditional movements and just showing that i think is an awesome test or just representation of what these ladies are capable of doing and oh man just the descent there anyone out there that does not crosstalk you are capable of doing so much more and these ladies are showing it right here this is your leader right now in lane two her name is spelled rhonda dessert it is unfortunately pronounced just had a no wrap and we'll advance the bar just behind the desert and look at that bauer nose that's one of the things when you're trailing you can see all right this is what i have to make up i'm gonna run and they actually get back to the rope at the first time although desert does jump up on it first desert has that strong descent or that fast descent and that speed there i think is what bauer knows she needed to run if she's gonna try to make up any ground on that descent you know there's one thing being able to climb a rope and there's one thing being able to compete on the rope and knowing how to descend knowing how to quickly get yourself up there you have to do both well and deserts uh doing just that well desert is four reps ahead of balor now she's gonna finish so desert will win the event here in about three minutes and 30 seconds event number two goes to ronda desert lanes 11 and 12 are neck and neck carrie and bower all the way from washington state just had a little extra speed burst at the end and then another speed burst at the top of your screen dig down deep at the end of an event [Music] a lot of races here [Music] got multiple athletes in each of these lanes as they work through this 20-person heat here on the zeus rig and in the north park field and just trying to make her way across at the end is pia gund and hopefully she's okay favoring she just grabbed the back of her right leg [Music] out of chili new york rochester area these athletes are crushing this time cap a six [Music] we've got finishes across the board but we do also still have a host of athletes still working through the end of the deadlifts on their fourth round while this event is all grippy and we talked about being a pulling event the compound effects of the run that they did earlier this morning is what we're seeing here at the end for a lot of these athletes who are not as limber running across the finish line being able to push that sprint i really think it is the effects and we are going to see that you see that in any competition at the crossfit games but specifically here in the masters division just what aches and pains what nags are these athletes dealing with you know and they do get exposed over the compounding of all the events talk about the grippiness pull singles here on this final round for teresa clement crossfit glenn bridge arden north carolina she was 10th out of the online qualifier sylvana volpe is right next to her from sacramento california mother of a regionals athlete [Music] and with 10 seconds left to go if your teresa clement hit the speed burst four seconds it'll come down to the line to try to beat the cap and just over it but a valiant effort as volpe worked her way through the deadlifts here in event two for the women ages 60 to 64. or excuse me 65 plus and this group of women here they got after it you know early on we had bauer just cruising her sprints in between the two movements here with the barbell and deadlift she was fast she was fast at the end but she got a costly no rep on the deadlift bar by not standing all the way up and that is what opened up for desert even though you know desert wasn't as fast in the transition she didn't need to be because her speed on the way down on those ropes broke descents really what made her that gave her that room as she crossed the finish line and bauer was quick behind her but that costly error on the deadlift bar for her was what set her back into that second place and at this level anybody can win came in 18th out of the online qualifier rhonda desert is down on the field as an event winner with amanda rhonda you said this event was pretty much made for you why is that really because i love rope climbs and i love dead lifts so this was perfect did you go out here with the idea that this was a sprint oh of course six minutes is a sprint for sure we have been talking about the transition so it's just not how fast you climb the rope it's not how fast you lift the deadlift but it's the back and forth between the rope and the bar yeah the plan was for me to run but when i got done doing everything i figured a fast-paced walk would be good so i like a little jog instead of a run well i think that worked out pretty well for you yeah it did great job out there thank you thank you thank you very much thank you so rhonda desert picks up an event win here in event number two her second appearance at the crossfit games she was 16th back in 2018 at 67 years of age still going strong such a great dichotomy you have the 65 plus athletes juxtaposed against the youngest ones here in the heat to follow girls ages 14 and 15 a little bit of adjustments but they're doing the same work five rounds for time and some of these ladies have been waiting two years to get out here on the competition floor since there was no team division last year but they will do one legless rope climb to that 20-foot target and then their five deadlifts will be 175 pounds for the 14 and 15 age division girls there were no crossfit games for the ladies of this age a year ago but olivia kerstetter in lane 10 did win the elite team throwdown which kind of served as the substitute up uh the pit fitness ranch in michigan so she comes in as the presumptive favorite here at her crossfit games debut as a 15 year old they're in lane 10. lanes 11 through 20 for these athletes couple other interesting names to watch we'll get to in a moment because we only have 10 athletes in this heat i got ahead of myself 30 seconds for these athletes you know at this age of getting to compete side by side um we really you get to see in the live competition the mental capacity for some of these younger athletes and it's impressive to see how some of them compete but they're training with athletes who have prior games experience and there's a lot of wisdom that you can glean from athletes that have been on the competition floor and that confidence of knowing you have people that support you in your ring and you know i think for some of these ladies to know that you have a team behind you they feel confident with their abilities here going out for a legless rope climb at their age is just so impressive to me being in this sport a really long time and just knowing what how far this sport has grown and to see some of these girls this is the only sport that they've known growing up live television speaking extemporaneously for like four hours there are 19 athletes here on the floor in event number two for the girls 14 to 15 here and this event is brought to us in part by wit visit fitness.com crossfit to shop all the training brands you love that's whit.fitness.com with fitness.com crossfit [Music] about a minute into a six minute time capped event and your leader in lane nine is trista smith [Music] you can see olivia kerstetter was in lane 10 just behind her bianca miller is in the gray on the left side of your screen also near the front miller's taking a very casual pace back to the rope and that could be smart to make sure her grip is ready quick hands is the name of the game if you can avoid going to that kip but now we're there and this is those extra five feet it's taxing the last thing you want to do is get there and have a no rep ah she got it we haven't seen too much failure yet on the legless rope we haven't seen it become an issue for athletes where they've just run out well it's smart joel they're introducing this move here at the age group legless 20 foot and they did one rep so we're not if you had multiple reps more than that one i think we would see the fail but one is smart hannah martinez the mexican right now is your leader having a little issue there there are two athletes per lane assignment here um they have to share that lane so you can't get your barbell in another athlete's way sharing is caring i'm gonna take all the space but when you're by yourself and you know this is new and you don't have those lane markers that's costly but the judge good on the judge to keep her in her lane the leaders at this juncture are on their fourth round here of these rope climbs there are five in this event six minute time cap the more experience you have in competition you know the more composed you can feel in situations like this where you're literally hanging and you're like what the heck do i do you don't want to freak out you want to get there but there's a time when can i that that use of like can i do it can i hang on and that could be the first devastating failure there for kiara silva you saw her hanging and then the clamp of her thighs that begins the no rep any use of anything other than your hands you know how it feels you're up that high you're looking right there and just that extra kick here now bianca miller trying to make her way up this is olivia kerstetter needing to have a really good event not that you want to say that two events in but the run was not her strength she knew that she is more of a strength athlete and here she is this is a deadlift workout she is at the front of the pack right now in sec she's coached by jacob hepner who is a veteran to the games you know he i'm sure instilled any of that confidence uh and just knowing it's a long competition one event you know you have to put it behind you and you have to play your game and know your abilities he is a smart coach and i'm sure they spoke she's a smart athlete as well she looks like she has a plan here of how to attack this riley bibi here out of lexington park maryland the 14 year old so on the younger end of this division making her crossfit games debut right now she is the leader and olivia kerstetter is well behind her as is the rest of the field riley bibi is crushing this and i think the time cap may also become a factor here so this is an impressive and massive event win in event number two for riley baby she wins in 4 30 unofficially kerstetter right behind her out of cobra command and again your presumptive favorite first in the online qualifier coming in and the second kerstetter to compete at the crossfit games behind her sister ellie she finishes in second but almost 20 seconds off that initial pace and now there is no one else in the rearview mirror and so here's what we're seeing you know if you come out hot and we see some names really fast to the bar fasten their first rope climb on their legless but it's the compounding effect of all the pulling and that you can't use your legs here at this height and all you can do is stand and wait until you get some energy back so you get some of that capacity back in the pool tanya we may not have another finisher if you're bb or kerstetter right now what's the mental advantage that you gain even just in your own mind looking back at this field and saying i just crushed it the confidence that that gives you in your abilities in in staying in your lane neither one of them were first but knowing that that can happen in any other event going forward you know to play your game go with what you know your abilities are to the best you can because this is absolutely possible in any other event as well this is emily meyer on your screen out of terre haute indiana and she was getting there and then just had to clamp down it looked like she was about to edge in front of in front of the pack and maybe get through the rope climb that did not happen so you have two young ladies absolutely demolish this and then stand like thanos admire the destruction on the flip side joel with all those athletes not finishing as well you know like the damage is kind of minimal because if you're the only one out there who can't do the rope climb that feels even so much worse knowing that many of them struggled there to finish with that last with those movements or with that movement for them it doesn't feel as detrimental so um but man for cursetter and bibi that is that's that's a feather in their cap so kerstetter and bibi are the two to finish here for the girls 14 and 15 age bracket it's all good but it's also i mean you talked about it throughout it's the introduction of the legless rope climb and it's the evolution of the sport and doing new things in new age divisions and then kind of seeing how it plays out and that's what these athletes are here to be tested they they know what they signed up for they came here um you know wanting to get that test too and anytime we hear of an athlete that goes through some adversity or a movement that they struggle with especially in competition it will be something they will perfect they will nail down and they will come back that much stronger because of it and this field will do just the same so for riley bibi she came in ninth at the age group online qualifier and she winds up first in event number two trista smith though started it off real well she did she came out like this event was meant to be a sprint couplet but she got held up on the rope and there was that time she was just hanging there for a long time and that was your i got it either it's do or die time and she had to come down off of that one and that just kind of was her stopping points but set her back but it was bibi who chose the smart speed to her ability level and she really just stayed consistent four or five rounds with those smooth one one road climbs and uh took the event with kerstetter right behind her not too far back they didn't let speed or any of the nerves get in the way of needing to be first they knew what their you know tempo needed to be to be successful riley is with amanda so many athletes have described this as being a fun event riley you were no different so why was this particular event fun for you um i'm pretty good at logos rope climbs i work on them a lot and it was a short event so sprinting through it that was fun yeah the legless road climbs are an evolution of our sport right we've seen those come about more recently so how much time are you spending training on those specifically i used to be a gymnast so every practice we worked on them and i work on them in my home gym whenever i can so yeah got a lot of work overall how's your experience been so far here at the games oh it's so fun it's way better than i thought it would be yeah well you're doing great so far riley thank you thank you all right congratulations to riley crossfit packs rise up all the way out of maryland making her way to madison wisconsin event two we will switch back to the men age group 50 to 54 is coming your way next [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] uh [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] the 2021 noble crossing games are presented by noble just the horns the official footwear and apparel brand of crossfit ramon unleash your call cbd md the cbd you can trust beast gooder shades that stay put no matter how sloppy your burpees get and crossfit affiliates first this is event two here at the north park in madison wisconsin of the 2021 noble crossfit games it's the masters men ages 50 to 54. had the run workout this morning here around north park now this sprint couplet with amanda krenz down on the fields and tonya wagner by my side joel cadet glad to have you along with us here at the alliant energy center we're talking about a sprint couplet what does that mean tanya means a short time cap in which to do two movements specifically six minutes to do this couple it's gonna be five rounds now for this age division it's one rope climb traditional rope climb the men can use their legs for their 20-foot rope and then their five deadlifts the weight is going up to 315 pounds it's time to mention the six-minute time cap here as we take a look at our lane assignments bob ruano bernard lucy brent meyer all veteran names we've seen here at the crossfit games kevin kester crossfit champion in his time and 18 filled lanes here for the 50-54 age group division the story is going to be no different for this event for these men just their chance to get out there we're going to see you know now with that fifth round does it tax anybody any more 315 it's a heavier barbell but something all of these men should be able to tackle for just the five reps one rope climb shouldn't be any problem so it's going to be those transitions and just you know no errors no you know trip ups move that barbell after every round and make sure that you just have a clean race i showed you kevin kester at the start of all of those athlete profiles he comes in as the number three seed out of the age group online qualifier he said on the invictus mindset podcast he is coming in with the intent to win he is driven this is not a show up and be here happy to be here a moment for the two-time champion you know after the first time you're like let's do that again and then he comes back to 19. cbd md is the cbd you can trust visit cbdmd.com crossfit and use promo code crossfit to get 30 off your order today [Music] [Music] although i say that because i was looking in the middle lanes they're probably thankful they're not though fred meyer is your leader in lane number seven he was 10th out of the age group online qualifier he has been second at these crossfit games twice in 2016 and 2017. three career event wins under his bell [Music] he is an invictus athlete at 49 years of age get to know rep there you need to stand up with that full extension at the knee and hip jeffrey tincher from crossfit fairfax has taken over the lead i said 49 for brent meyer this is the 50 to 54 age group he was 49 at the start of the year he is now 50 years old so he has just aged into this group and it's always interesting to see how that plays between the younger end of the five-year age window and the older end jeffrey tincher is on the younger end too at just 52. jeff tincher i competed with him back in 2009 jeff pincher's been around forever and jeff buddy you were old when we started so you've just gotten better than with age he just the confidence in his capacity what he's able to do i love still seeing him throw down and compete with these guys out here two-time champion kevin kester he is an outdoorsman he looks he looks like he's about to go chop down a tree somewhere kevin kester is a professional iron worker he became one at 19 years of age and talks about crossfit he goes iron working is crossfit for 10 hours a day so this is light one when that is your profession is the full capacity body fatigue and then this is your fun you have to be fit brent meyer is still your leader on the right he's being chased by tincher on the left look at tincher's form he's just so tight through his midline on that barbell meyer starting to fall apart there and it paid off jeff tincher he's victorious in his return to the crossfit games after five years out jeff tincher wins event two kevin kester coming up behind he'll be in third place following brent meyer all doing it in three minutes and 15 seconds or less three of the names you would have expected to see at the top of the leaderboard here for this age bracket craig murcak christian biaggi number 511 there hunting murkhack down from behind darius buchholz that 51 the younger end of this age bracket crosses the finish line as well and getting that no rep again sometimes when you're rushing the deadlift it's easy not to have that hip just hit full extension your knee gets there and you feel like your legs are straight and you're at full extension you're just not that's lon allen with the arm tattoo at the top of your screen was supposed to be here last year had worked so hard he makes his debut here in 2021 instead [Music] randy lowe forget just trying to be here for the first time this is his first ever crossfit competition he picked a good one i'd say so talk about being a rookie your debut on the grandest stage you know looking around and just i there's a lot to learn here with this technique you can see as his back is rounding they're just not as efficient on that barbell would love to see him use a little more leg just for the sheer fact that it is a long week there's a lot ahead of him but he's peeking around seeing where he's at and with still a minute left to go here inside the time cap we've got one athlete still hanging out here with the rope climbs matt chia a two-time games veteran the rope climbs just bested him today so with 25 seconds left to go matt chia is going to wait out the time cap here in event number two and actually looking at it i don't know if he started or not that may have been a conscious decision for matt i don't know ruling on that with you know what they need to show uh you know did he did he show an attempt there or not it's hard to say with everything else that was going on but the front end we got a good one we were paying attention over here the race really at the end was between tinter and myers myrie actually turned out that mike got to the bar first but it was just tincher's movement his technique his efficiency that's really what paid off here even though meyer picks up that bar and gets a couple reps under his belt he's not able to keep the form and the technique here to drop there even where jeff is just cruising through unbroken for his five deadlifts and that technique is what paid off jeff's years of experience and movement being so clean amanda can you just let jeff know that uh tanya said he's old [Laughter] jeff i am supposed to let you know that tanya wagner said you're old can you respond tanya look in the mirror let's let's talk about your experience a little bit and the fact that this is you said the first time you've won an event in all your experience tell me about that yeah so uh twice as an individual three times the master once as a team it's the first time i've ever won an event so i'm i'm pretty happy about that yeah that was actually one of my goals for this year but just to win an event so i'm so happy to be standing here with you and doing your your interview what did you think coming into this event a lot of the athletes have said it's fun it's fast you just put your head down and you go it's a sprint it's a couplet same thing for you or different strategy no it was it was put your head down grip it and rip it you did awesome out there thank you so much and great job on your first interview and your first event win thank you amanda and tanya i love you congrats to jeff tincher we've got the hepner uh uh boxing matchup with josh bridges coming up we could set up an undercard if you'd like listen i love jeff what i meant to say is he was so impressive when i was competing with him back in the day looking at an older gentleman that actually my husband always wants this he always says i hope i can be as fit as jeff hincher so i need to clarify that jeff i don't know where to go from there event two for the men 55 to 59. this is five rounds for time and with the 55 to 59 age group it is 315 pounds still on that bar that's a lot it is i mean but it's a good test it's only five reps and these athletes are capable of doing it and um i mean the four it really does come down to your form and i think seeing what we just saw there with tincher and meyer just having your form being able to have the good technique through years and all your practice it pays off here in any competition take a look at the lane assignments patrick sprague has been to the crossfit games many times of course you might know his son as well jen sprague competed in the teen level and made his elite debut at the west coast classic this year ron ortiz is in lane 11 he is the dean not of this age group he's newer in this age group but he's the dean of the masters here at the crossfit games 55 to 59 he is 55 years old he makes his ninth appearance this year event number one though tonya wagner ron ortiz was kind of limping to the finish line and it didn't look comfortable but he's set to go a little concerning when we saw that we were hoping that everything was okay and i'm anxious to see you know are there any effects from that first event but his name and ron you see his face he is just anonymous with the masters division and just uh the athletes that still already they still are ready to compete and they still have that drive and uh and i'm anxious if there's anybody that's gonna you know come back from the finish like that it's gonna be him no one has ever won a championship in three different masters divisions he is one of several people this week that could do that we talked about the boxing match let's talk about it more because you can watch for the first time ever two crossfit legends josh bridges and jacob hepner enter a trial by combat it's september 18th for 14.99 on pay-per-view and get your pay-per-view ticket now coresports.world and use the code crossfit at checkout for 10 percent off henner bridges it's the under card to sum it's the main event to us 30 seconds in and there is your early leader in lane three out of crossfit i set myself up for that crossfit rope as he jumped up had just a missed i guess grip but really fast on that barbell or on that from that rope climb ron ortiz really fast on the barbell he is back to the rope although deep house is back to the barbell he makes his crossfit games debut here [Music] he is a box owner he and his wife over in the and just not as efficient they're even moving the bar as ron so really this is going to be who can keep up you know their strength and not have the slower movement fall apart too much ortiz though is quite a bit behind and you could see him turn his head before he started the deadlift he'll roll this bar forward he's in second place but deep house is already running back to the bar so he is a full almost six reps so to speak ahead as patrick sprague works his way back to the zeus rig i mean you've got people rolling the bar up to the final round here [Music] and deep house is like i'm good i'm looking at you guys all chasing me he'll head back for his final rope climb two minutes and 20 seconds in this is a five round event he gets those legs up so high and really able to use that height to his advantage and maximize that height by leaning back there we haven't talked about that a lot with the people that can use their legs on the rope climbs versus the legless it's not necessarily a pulling movement you're getting your feet up and standing yourself up absolutely that's the proper way to lift the most efficient when you can use your legs you're uh using your height being able to get that but it's hard to do that isn't it yeah you have to just train it it's one of those techniques that you just need to train um and when you can do it well that's so much easier deep house has enough time to wave to the crowd cruising in accepts the applause he gave it to himself yeah well well deserved there that was yeah really clean run right there ron ortiz is on his heels he'll head up to his final five deadlifts here at 315 pounds ron had been such a staple missed 2019 because of a thumb injury of course there was no 2020 so first time in three years that ron ortiz is able to get back here to madison and i'll drop the bar knowing who's around him very aware while patrick sprague crept up behind that break costs ron ortiz and patrick sprague the veteran will himself ahead of ortiz and finish second and look at gem spread that's a proud son screaming at the finish line and it is ortiz that will come in third [Music] so ron was looking around but he did need to break that barbell and that final but then you know i think this is the weight that we're talking about they're able to do it but if you can't go unbroken there you need to put that down or held on a little too early you know the fatigue of your grip with the rope as well it's just so much time for your grip or for your legs too with the weight on that bar four and a half minutes into this six minute event and in the air for cook coming across and the cartwheel well if you have no one right behind you you may as well no one's going to catch him make it interesting [Applause] minute left to go on the time cap we do have one athlete who is stuck on the first round of deadlifts one athlete on the round of four everyone else is at least on the round of five jody clements the former school superintendent showing that anybody they put their mind and their work ethic to it jody clements that's the cool part about the masters divisions you're looking at regular everyday people who get to this level you're just you're seeing just so much other experience life experience and and knowing that they can come to a competition and they can be competitive in something like this is so cool to me because it represents like i said before the affiliate it represents every day who goes to the gym and who inspires other people all around the world they're everyday people that they didn't think of them this wasn't their life's goal they had so many other goals that they've already accomplished this is icing on the cake this is so much fun for them i really feel like that keeps just the um you know that raw feel of crossfit the early days it kind of keeps that alive in the game because it's gotten so professional and i love that it's a professional sport but i love it there's also this element of these guys in there still throwing down crazy fit tom famiry just working through those final deadlifts kimbrough was working on that final rope climb when the sound hit six minute time cap has elapsed but it is deep house who is your winner take a look at how he got there he was just cruising from the start his speed in the barbell his speed up and down the rope he used the legs so efficient on the rope climbs uh getting the feet as high up as he can then just standing on that rope using his length and he was really all by himself didn't slow down his technique wasn't the strongest on that bar we see some rounding of the back but he was still able to keep the tempo up never broke on the barbell spread through the finish line all on his own so vincent deephouse just able to jog through and jog right down to amanda krebs we've talked about the rope climbs with so many other athletes who've been competing today let's talk about your deadlifts how did those go i think uh pretty pretty well they were awesome i could do them unbroken and actually uh yeah trained uh on these situations getting your rope climbs done and doing heavy heavier deadlifts so uh yeah 315 was okay for me and uh i'm not like the big guns but this is something i can do with a lot of leverage having my legs and my long arms so i need to take my advantage now because i know these guys will be chasing me for the rest of the week the days i noticed that there's a lot of camaraderie with you guys is it almost like i know you're competing against each other but it is almost like having teammates out here because you're cheering for each other yeah i mean this is my first time i've got guys being out here for three times it's incredible so i look up to these guys because i've never been here this is my first time and i'm so enjoying and they they take me in the group and they just you know socially before i won they're great guys so yeah well great job an event too thank you again yeah thank you i like how he said that before i won they were great guys that is an event win for vincent deephouse here in his crossfit games debut he does it in convincing fashion beating out patrick sprague and ron ortiz by almost quite literally almost a full minute for vincent deephouse patrick sprague then 350 edges out loud ortiz who had to take a break on his final set of deadlifts by 14 seconds perry sipland came in fourth i like the the mentality too for deep house he said i knew i had to take my shot because this was my wheelhouse i have to put some space because i know the other big guns are coming coming up next women 50 to 54 here in madison the 2021 noble crossing games are presented by boop unlock yourself with 24 7 recovery sleep and strain insights from woof storm personalized scientific wellness trifecta fitting the official recovery beverage of the crossfit games and by crossfit training improve as an athlete and a coach explore crossfit's training courses [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] the north park stadium here at the alliant energy center in madison wisconsin is the host of the crossfit games here on day number one event number two for the masters women ages 50 to 54. first time in 700 some odd days we've been able to have the crossfit games here in madison wisconsin amanda krenz is down on the field alongside tanya wagner my name is joel godette event number two is a speed couplet here rope climbs and dead lifts and six minutes with which to work we've already seen the older divisions tackle this event but now the ladies in the 50 to 54 division will have an extra round they're gonna do all five rounds and their weight on the barbell goes up 20 pounds so now they're gonna deadlift 195 pounds they still have that one rope climb where there are able to use their legs two pages of lane assignments here with 17 women competing in this event number two t.d hoffman and tia vess are in lanes 10 and 11 went back and forth last year and we've talked about the masters fitness collective they held a championship when the age groups did not happen because of covet 19 last year so once again they are the two to jockey here in the middle lanes once they make it to the crossfit games here in 2021 carrie sandoval on lane 13 is a crossfit games veteran as well 30 seconds to start like you said you know some of these athletes qualifying for last year's games and then having to wait you know it's been the story for so many people but when you've waited that long to get on the floor and you know they've had other competitions okay it's not what you train for all year so getting to get out here and just be here with the crowd and be side by side with the other athletes is just it's exciting for these athletes and they really get to showcase what they've done for the past two years of work [Music] underway age group 50 to 54 for these women our broadcast today is brought to you in part by beast gooder squawk beast gooder sunglasses is hooking you up with 21 off they're already affordable no slip no bounce all polarized chains with the code beast gooder crossfit 21. head to gooder.com crossfit and get ready to finally have a pair of shades that stay put no matter how sloppy your burpees get it's beast gooder sunglasses i'm telling you i can personally attest to that by the way they don't move they're good that's good right next to one another 45 seconds in here to event number two elena kulick trying to make up some ground she was on the back half of the standings after event number one this more in her wheelhouse movement wise veteran this her third appearance on the right of your screen there in the gray and advancing that bar next to the leader joy ann cooper those two going back and forth here they can use your legs there's a little more urgency on these divisions because they can rely on the leg you don't have that you know not the weight for the grip but the descent there that was good shaking your head yeah i see that too that speed on the way down really that has been the difference maker is the descent on the rope for these athletes and being that high every extra half second quarter second matters and then advancing the bar to round number four she'll head back to the rope climb here joy and cooper talked about waiting for some of these athletes after not having a games last year joanne told the morning chalk up i consider myself a four and a half time games [Music] and sprinting right back to the bar five deadlifts in round four here for joy and cooper [Music] hailing from new market ontario crossfit new market central and canada 52 years of age so still [Music] setting it down so during the transition chalking up [Music] it's the little things joel that's an advantage i can't have in the world [Music] cooper right now still leading elena cooley those are the front two and you can see the distance between them i mean that's first and second place on your screen right now and now kulik is going to run in behind cooper who will run ahead to the finish line and an event win the second of joy and cooper's crossfit games career joy and cooper unofficially in 317 executed it like it was meant to be nice little sprint and after a tough start in event number one elena kulick all the way from nova severe nova savers she's from siberia elena coolant is done tia vesser who we talked about off the top one of the names to watch coming in she is done [Applause] sprint to the finish right next to her dede hoffman who was the top ranked seed coming out of the age group qualifier she has finished in under four minutes points to be had here is barbells drop [Music] looks like the cap may be no inhibitants here for these ladies [Music] [Applause] as all but one have now completed their work there's just one rope climb left here on round four look at the utter destruction for the finishers and that's what you expect in a sprint so they didn't push themselves just like expected it's hot out there also joel the sun is a pulley out the first event they had today cloudy it was raining then we had no delay but now it is full sun it gets really hot out my turn christy brown may have just hit the wall here on these rope climbs had a good showing on event one today you would expect that a marathon runner in her younger days [Music] 17 years as a deputy in the pierce county sheriff's department to the games here break down her form here yeah so look at her legs she's not getting her her feet up really any higher than just a slight knee bend so there's so much fatigue on her upper body and her arms and she's just unable to hold on because it's all about her grip it's so much time under tension it's just it it's compounds all the upper body where if she could get those that leg length or that leg higher and stand on it using all of her legs then it would take some that relief off of her arm that's what we talked about a couple of divisions ago where it's less of a pull sometimes than it is a stand yeah but you know what using the the deadlifts and her legs are probably tired from earlier this morning sometimes it's hard if your legs are fatigued to also use that technique that dave castro is dastardly how he taxes things in a certain order it's the build up of the games and how you're able to handle that it is what it's the test though that they are being tested on and that's you know that's expected um but some you know and if it's just not your movement either that you're proficient at then you sometimes there's just movements you don't want to see together and that could be for her who knows um but many of these athletes did get through that just fine smiling already really though for this heat this 50 to 54 year old women's division it was cool looking cooper they were at the head in the same lane sharing the lane but cooper was the one who was just moving on the barbell she was really fast she got those feet up really high on the rope every single time she uses her length to her advantage just get the uh the feet as high as she can to stand up on that rope was unbroken all the way through even that final barbell was able to stay ahead just edge [Music] because her transitions were fast no hiccups on any of the movements they were both strong for her she was able to execute this one just as a sprint second event win in the career of joyanne cooper who was with amanda let's talk about the little things in this sprint style of a workout there's not a lot of room to make a lot of mistakes so what were some of those little things that you took into consideration uh putting the chalk inside my bra i mean i tried to find room and pants but decided on the bra and i've never done that before but thought that that would just save that time in transition because there's runs between the two movements um another important one is don't get any no wraps on the deadlifts they would be costly so just really take an extra second and really open up at the top make sure your judge could see that i was standing tall no room for error in an event like this what are your expectations for yourself as we carry on through the competition this year yeah so this is my fifth games but and i probably this year have the least amount of expectations that i have had in coming to the game so i'm i'm loving day one it's awesome um the games is actually the reward the qualifying is is the hard work for me being at crossfit games is always like the reward the rainbow at the end and uh so just being here is the reward so we look forward to watching you thank you thank you thank you amanda congrats to joy anne that's a win 21 seconds it's been interesting to see in each division the winds have been pretty large in scope yeah really for that for the first place it really has been um you know and it like she said the little things that made the big differences though for them and they're the the costly errors for the rest of them chalk in the bra that's the key that's the key find the room coming up next is 55 to 59 for the women here at north park the event description is as we just witnessed 195 pounds with those five rounds per time it's the exact same thing so now you know in these masters they don't always get a chance to to see what it's going to look like but they did there and a lot of those athletes with um in the last heat you know they have a similar capacity to these ladies so it's a really good test if they were watching and paying attention to those little things seeing how that event was going to feel for them that was that good on them if they were paying attention because we expect to see more of the scene for this 50 to 55 to 59 division in lane number 10 lori mcchisnick is a games veteran you may know that name this is her ninth appearance at the crossfit games karen lundgren is in lane nine joanne mccullough in lane 11. those are the three that flank the middle the top three seeds coming out of the age group online qualifier it's interesting to see so many women move almost in sync through those deadlifts but there is a separation where you might expect it at the middle of the field i'm already watching some chalking going on dropping chalk and picking it back up so when you have such a fast sprint and they're people so close to you you have to make the consideration am i gonna keep with that do i need to chalk do i is there a place where i can kind of edge out that i don't need to that it won't cost me a no rep that you just saw there also a push from robbie moyles in lane 2. [Music] moyles was 18th coming out of the age group online qualifier and again we've talked about it a few times it just goes to show once you get here throw all the names in a yahtzee cup especially on day one you could get challenged from the outside lanes until things really start to sort themselves out a push can come from anywhere it's easy to go out too hot in a five-round event in movements that these ladies are capable of but it's can you keep that speed can you keep that though a tempo block of chalk there for lori that she brought with her shayna bunts she also works from the middle of the field here a third of the way through this event we have three barbells now four barbells moved up to round four robbie moyles right now is your leader then shanna bunts then karen lundgren as you get a look at bunts full-time pediatrician out of crossfit in springfield oregon younger end of this division at just 55 years of age and she went to run to the finish line but she still had a round to go so she advances that bar into the round five square and back to the rope climbs meanwhile in lane two robbie moyles still goes to work the rope climbs no object and buns goes for the firefighter method i like her composure even with that little mishap on the barbell she kept her head in it and there's no fatigue at this rate at this point no you can see her speed barbell is moving fast some of the other ladies even started much slower but man really strong off the ground and that'll be a finish unofficially in 322 and this may actually be one of the closer heats that we've seen in this event [Applause] so lori will come in behind and will be in second place by about 15 or so seconds robbie moyle's down in lane two making her way toward the finish line and now the floodgates start to open a little bit [Applause] done in lane 13 for lasara magnani crossfit silver fern four minutes into a six minute time capped event won by miss bunts here's rose wall she and her husband are competing here at the games this weekend or this week [Music] [Applause] all but two athletes are on to round five here karen lundgren comes across [Applause] got a minute and 15 seconds left tanya this is kind of where you have to run your own race if you're still out on the field points matter so beat who's behind you and don't get lost in the fact that you're seeing people in front yeah you have to just stay composed in this part you know it's easy to get yourself a little disheveled when you're watching everybody run right by you but keep your wits about you and just make sure that your reps are clean and that you can get in with whatever whatever reps you can you know and squeak in there for the placing and not have an error or an injury or something foolish we saw linda elston for a podium athlete finish [Music] it's hard to gauge other people's fatigue too so when you're watching other people's struggle you really don't know where they're at and at that point you have to really listen to yourself and kind of listen to your own body that's charlotte quan in the foreground mint hill north carolina product [Music] with 10 seconds left to go here this is the final round for quan having to pull singles just trying to get through the deadlifts here with two seconds left and juan at least gets her way through the deadlifts [Applause] before having to run to the finish line it is bunks though who comes away with the victory a little bit from behind well really started out fast she was really fast on the barbell she was cruising the first couple rounds that we saw but it was buns her speed and her transitions and the tempo that she started was really the same tempo she finished really fast up the ground with her deadlifts even when she had this costly bobble that we thought was costly she had given herself enough room with her tempo she was able to run back to the rope and finish up ahead of moyles just couldn't keep up the speed [Applause] if she remembers what round she's on she wins by 30 seconds she really does she blows it out of the water using some extra time now to get down there though and talk to a man we were just talking about well she said she can't count we know that's not true but we can talk about what that does to you mentally when you're out there on the competition floor so just explain what happens well like i was going so fast i had no idea where it was and you know the co the judge is doing this and i'm like oh it must be done so i thought i'd start running she's so i looked over the bar and thought i was going to finish and know i had another round so i had to scamper back as fast as i could to that rope to get the last the last rope climb in and the last set of deadlifts and hopefully not lose it you know on that so you still did fantastic obviously what's it like to be out here on the competition floor right next to these amazing that's absolutely amazing this is my first time at the games i've been working for five years to get here and i've followed these ladies a lot of these ladies and in the older age group and the age group beneath me and i've dreamt of this for a long time and worked really hard to get here and finally i'm here so congratulations thanks [Music] picks up the event victory here at her crossfit games debut a little bit different than other hobbies gardening knitting and hiking see crossfit is for everyone it's good to have a broad portfolio i also wish i kind of wish i knew how to knit i could use a blanket now and then she she wins and she wins in 15 seconds and again like that's one of the closest gaps we've seen like the the separation between one two in the field throughout all of these age groups when it happens once or twice that's one thing it has interestingly become a story how one or two people have separated themselves in the combination of rope climb and dead lift still to come we'll move our way back to the boys 16 and 17 to the younger age groups when we return here to madison the 2021 noble crossfit games are presented by rogue fitness don't weaken u.s army what's your warrior monster energy ultra the official energy drink of the crossfit games bear complex the official grip of the crossfit games and crossfit games the sport of fitness visit games.crossfit.com to learn more [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] wow [Music] [Music] um [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] event number two here at the north park for the boys ages 16 and 17. here at the 2021 noble crossfit games amanda krenz is down on the field she is tanya wagner my name is joel godette first day of a week of competition here in madison wisconsin and it all starts off with the age groups and the adaptive athletes this is their second event it is five rounds for time these athletes are going to do one road climate legless for this 16 to 17 year old boys division and then the barbell weight for them is going to be 345 pounds so 30 pounds higher than what we saw for the younger age division at the 14 and 15 division to see how that weight plays at this level as well and where that is based on some of these athletes one rm with the amount of reps they're going to have to do over the course of this event it's a much different element the legless than it is when you head when you can use your legs especially with deadlifts the compounding effect of your grip you know you have to go when your grip is ready and the extra five feet in the reviews too we're used to seeing the 15 foot line lane assignments to keep an eye on nate ackerman is the number one overall seed coming out of the age group online qualifier roxy gunderson is from crossfit reykjavik and thor's daughter's gym over in iceland david bradley the champ is here from the 14 and 15 age bracket at the 2019 crossfit games there is nate ackerman he's the son of julie ackerman former crossfit games athlete in her own right second appearance for these athletes here at north park already today after the run this morning sunny skies for event two after their first event was delayed a little bit by rain and look at the way they attack the rope climb before we get to the deadlifts you can put your meal prep on autopilot with trifecta chef made macro balanced meals delivered straight to your door visit trifecta nutrition.com and use code crossfit to get 40 off meal prep today they are aggressive speed is the name of the game for these guys but these are young bucks this is what they do this is what they can do this is the way they train they have the capacity to just push so hard and in a shorter event like this this is this is easy for them i mean in some in some right this is the older of the young division so with some of them having some experience under their belt a few years and the weight of just wanting to get on the floor and showcase this the volume that the younger athletes of the crossfit games have been training is just so high that seeing one legless rope climb for them is probably like ah i know what i can do i have confidence in that one i know i can just rip through that that's the only athlete at the crossfit games from austria on your screen right there elias simrugger [Music] making his second appearance at the games he was seventh in 2019 he's your current leader here in event number two although he is being pushed from behind in lane 17 chase peck i mean centimeters behind him rolling his barbell forward jace peck on his home turf he's out of fort atkinson wisconsin not too far from here in madison younger end of the division at just 16 years of age and it's actually jace peck that touches first he needed only three kids there for those last three pools and you can see each one took a look down the lane and peck gets right on the barbell and goes so he is now three reps ahead and will move the barbell forward to his fifth and final round the toe of the barbell has taken so much that just moving it forward is a joy 2 30 left to go and you can see the difference between the first row climb and the fifth round a lot more kicks here [Music] ah the final one he was able to hold on and make it nice well done there we go told us he was a good gymnast now coming behind but jace pack had to have seen the rope climbs and felt really confident about this three more deadlifts here this may wind up being one of the closest finishes we've seen from any of the age groups peck looks to his right and he has a lead that i think will hold it's getting closer but peck will edge out an event win in event number two [Music] so jace peck from down in lane 17 picks up the victory simburger winds up in third nate ackerman was able to come in in second place your number one overall seed out of the age group online qualifier [Music] one of two brothers competing actually two pairs of brothers competing in the teenage divisions two minutes left to go until the cap [Music] [Music] we have five barbells still on round four everyone else is either finished or on round five here as we get a finish line across from the aforementioned david bradley off the top gabriel greb with the stumble across and blazo as well is done with a minute and change maybe my favorite name miguel buzaru out of sao paulo brazil the 16 year old he will finish here all the way from brazil tanya his first ever crossfit competition was the granite games several years ago came all the way stateside to compete that's exciting i mean you want to see where you stand you want to be in a legit competition come on over check it out let's joke with you like maybe like the dark bulls like throw down back in brazil just had a tumble from the top of the rope for evan baker that is a still considered a controlled descent for the 17 year old out of three kings in indianapolis with 30 seconds left to go back to the rope evan baker tip your cap to this young man he's on his fourth round of dead lifts this 345 pound weight is 10 pounds off his one rep max he has now lifted him 16 times i mean that shows you just how impressive these boys are at their age different you know stages of development for some of these guys like there's still a lot of growth to happen for some of these in the 14 to 15 and 16 to 17 age division and when you put it that way with near their max it's so impressive his form was able to hold up even that strong but really when it comes down to this division they were shot out of the cannon and it was silver with this early lead he was just so aggressive but round four was where that speed kind of caught up to him as he slowed down peck was still just keeping his cruise he was feisty on that rope for all these legless he was able to hold on even though he had to change his technique there for the final pulls they were all the kip it was that speed he was very aggressive keeping his uh kind of it his eyeballs open seeing where he was in the pack and then just edged out ackerman who was right behind him on that final sprint jace peck is with amanda i'm talking to the local boy this is jace he's from right down the street basically let's talk about the event first of all and you had a competitor right on your tail were you aware of that i was very aware of that yeah how did that push you during the event uh honestly i was just trying to keep my pace stay consistent throughout the rounds and just kind of push it at the end there so that was good you've got to have a pretty good crowd here friends and family since you're from just a few miles away really what's that like for you to be able to have that kind of support here oh man it's amazing it means everything to me having friends family from out of town from town and everything supporting me from back home it means so much you put on a good show today good job thank you thanks jason jace peck from just down the road it was a fun chance to compete at home beats out nate ackerman that is the first time we've seen anything remotely close between first and second a one second difference we've been looking at 20 and 25 second gaps throughout all of these age groups from first to second place we got a race this time peck and ackerman and then simberger who was there for so long winds up 11 seconds off pace to finish in third from the boys 16 and 17 we go up to the men 35 to 39 this is the youngest of the men's masters athletes the event description for them includes the heavy barbell 345 pounds more of the same so we just saw the 16 to 17 year old take it on and now the 35 to 39 year old men will do the legless road climb followed by the five deadlifts at 345 pounds uh you know a lot of these guys they're rookies to the masters but not rookies to the games or to competition now we're going to show you these lane assignments and you're going to look at some of these names and go oh my this is a lot of name and you can see it on your screen right there with hobart kyle casper bauer is a former elite level podium athlete nick block was at the 2019 crossfit games adrian conway if you've ever been to a level one seminar you may have had him as your instructor 35 to 39 is stacked the one name you do not see is dan bailey he has withdrawn because of covet 19 protocols it's been very much talked about over the last couple of days unfortunately for dan we will not get to see dan bailey compete this weekend and we will be down to just the 18 athletes in this field he will be missed but these other athletes out there uh you know with prior games experience they you know coming to the masters you don't really know what to expect you know and so i'm excited for them to get a chance to see just how aggressive the competition is pal casper is is his third year at the masters he has the experience knowing what it feels like to be on this floor so i'm really anxious to see them as we get more of these games athletes into the division um just how it elevates the whole competition not only does he have experience but he's been a master thrice he's won twice kyle casper right in the front of your screen there just touched on his first legless rope climbing out of these deadlifts and these guys are just going to rip through 345 pounds 20 ish seconds for these athletes to knock out that first round it'll be interesting to see how does that split maintain as we go are we looking at 20-ish second rounds as these athletes continue to move dustin mcwilliams right now is your leader he is cruising grand forks north dakota from crossfit soul fire he was slated to make an appearance at the games last year in 2020 lane two james howell as well near the front [Music] but still speedy up that rope and you know i think you'll see that speed change in the transition so that he can keep the speed up on the rope and not go to the kit leader on the right by one half rep he's crushing that barbell just the down half nick williams and howell at the front third place is dusty sullivan [Music] williams though continues to be the leader he is the only man lifting here on round four matt fraser is going to shake his fist at us but tanya he's five foot seven so his range of motion is shorter [Music] he's just using that speed on the way down and he's able to you know there's a their standard of not bouncing you can't go faster than what gravity's gonna take it down but there is a way to use that descent to your advantage and in competition it's important to keep your arms straight be able to do that you don't really you cannot bend your elbows he wasn't so he's doing he's just at that line where he's using it to the full advantage that's what i was just gonna say how do you strategize you can't use the bounce and drop the bar so to speak but how do you take most advantage of gravity yeah you take that feet but you just have to know keep your hamstrings engaged and know when to when that contacts made when you're pulling stand right back up [Applause] two rep lead here for mc williams this could come down to a foot race depending on how well howell can get off the bar and he's got too much ground to make up mick williams puts a finger in the sky that's an event win so dustin mcwilliams victorious sulad is able to finish as well owl came in second adrian conway sprinting across three minutes and 20 seconds unofficially casper bauer jogs toward the finish mcmaster is done this may be the closest range of finishes i think we've seen across the age groups from you know first to 15. yeah there was a lot there coming right in but this is the division as close to the two you know the individual men and so this is where you do see the speed you see a difference in the way that they can sprint and attack these events that's also why you're seeing the loading that you see and they're the differences as opposed to the higher age divisions just on nick block finish of course talk about the elite level division nick flock was there in 2019 [Music] couple athletes still working and the rope climbs look like they have potentially gotten the best of brandon nolan he is doing his dorn desk gomez what goes through your mind here like when you know your forearms are shot like how do you recruit them to say like we're here let's let's do this you know it really is it's a test of knowing like you only know when you jump up there did i wait long enough really i mean without if he's watching the clock and you kind of know what what level of fatigue you're in but if it's not something you've timed out and practice it really is a hard gauge especially when you have another you know with another grip movement um you know other movements are easier to kind of time out but legless is very difficult brandon nolan gave it a go had to stop that voice in your head when you did i wait long enough and then you go and you go up no i didn't the clock restarts and i think that's the most devastating thing oh it is and the fatigue of even just the attempt then and you're like i set myself back even more but you know these guys are competitors you don't want to stand there either uh you don't want to wait too long and you're like man if i can get one then i can make it make one more attempt and get that rep to count well if you're gonna go you gotta go ten seconds left nolan is done with five seconds remaining no one else will make an attempt so the cap for a couple of athletes here in the 35 to 39 age bracket you had to keep your speed through all five rounds that's what mcwilliams did on the barbell on the ropes but uh you know that speed that he came back to every single round looked similar to the first the only time we saw a speed change was in the transition but when it came to the movement it was offspring that's what earned him the hundred points in event number two and dustin mcwilliams is down on the field with amanda friends dustin you had some time to think about event two the one you just finished after you had completed event one this morning so what did you focus on uh i just tried to get up the rope as fast as i could because i knew i'm pretty good at those and then try and stay unbroken on the deadlifts and make the transitions fast no not lovely get around this is only event two there's a lot of competition left what are you going to focus on as far as strategy and maybe even what your expectations are for yourself i think i'll take every workout a little bit differently i think you'll play to my strengths played my weaknesses and uh i'm excited for the snatch workout next i'm not going to do super great in it but it's just a fun event to do one right max so yep look forward to watching you good luck thank you thank you win for dustin mcwilliams to cap off the second of three events here on the first day for the 35 to 39 year old man we'll age it up a bracket 40 to 44 that comes your way from north park in just a moment so [Music] so this is event two here at north park in madison wisconsin of the noble crossfit games 2021 it's the age groups men 40 to 44. event 2 includes five rounds for time telling you which part of this is harder it's going to be the rope climb i know i would say for this age group i am going to say we're going to see a little bit of slowing but i still think it may be the rope climb the legless rope climb at that 20-foot mark for the guys it's something new to the masters it's new to actually any games division to see a legless at 20 feet so i think we're gonna see some slowing there but they still have that heavy bar about 345 pounds which is quite heavy yeah 345. four h groups lifting that heavy here as you take a look at your lane assignments nunu costa has been around for a very long time david johnston as well in lane 10 alexander jole has been a podium finisher in his time tony kurz is a member of the us army warrior fitness team he's in lane 12. and of course everyone knows watapalooza it's now one of the semi or one of the the big events in crossfit guido trinidad in lane 16 invented the thing and he has been competing for a long time in the individuals as well as now here at the masters we love seeing him over here um he's just been around for so long and he has you know watapalooza is what people know him for and it's a fantastic event and excited to see him out here sanctioned event by crossfit a year ago as we begin event two for the 40-44 masters visit fitness.com crossfit to shop all the training brands you love that's with fitness.com everyone in their first round of five deadlifts here again at 345 pounds and it is the middle of the field that advances the barbell first of course your highest ranked athletes coming out of the age group online qualifier in those middle lanes alexander joel just tapped at the top of the zeus rig there on your screen and he sprints right back transition time is non-existent here these athletes are moving it is you know the name of the game is speed but only if you can keep it joel you don't want to go too so fast early that it damages your grip for going back to round three four and five because the costly i mean well no rep is so costly especially if it is on the rope if you're confident go for it but as soon as you start to see some slowing like we did right there at the final you know that the final two three pulls there that's and that'll be interesting to watch on joel ave's next rope climb was that tiring or was that measuring to know if he could go for it or if he had to take another baby step and and the deadlifts were easy as pie for him so joe levay now back to his fourth legless rope climb here this may tell the tale for the way the rest of this workout goes for him nunu costa the invictus athlete 10 crossfit games appearances is a lot and joel ave [Music] i may have been fatigued here tanya and that's his third now so we went from you know a little bit more so we'll see expect to see a little bit more slowing the barbell is not the issue [Music] well he and david johnston both arrive at that barbell at the exact same time so johnston now starting to put on some pressure here fourth back in 2018 and johnston is actually done with the deadlifts first two guys that are absolute forces to be reckoned with and again when you're side by side with them there's the extra pressure it's not even like we've got a buffer laying there and joel ave look at the confidence johnston stopped to chalk and joel ave just went david johnston is able to hit the zeus rig and now has a pretty substantial lead as joel ave times out he does tap the rig that is a good rep for joel but it may have opened up enough of a lead [Applause] david johnston out of georgia [Applause] david johnston checks the rear-view mirror he knows david johnston an event win here on the middle of day one at the 2021 noble crossfit games smart athlete right there he didn't fall trapped to the race it's always a race even if you're the only one in it just making sure nathan beveridge nunu costa now finishes in third you don't have to check the rearview mirror if you just run you know trinidad [Music] good to see guido trinidad back at the games by the way first appearance since 2017. how about good to see that guy back at the games first appearance for fink since 2011. him [Music] with a minute and a half remaining there are four barbells five barbells still not on the fifth round there are two men here finishing out their fifth round that's robbie mccord and the native of st louis missouri will fall in missouri to be specific we'll finish here and maxime out of france in just under five minutes is done but it looks like we've got a couple of athletes that have just run into a rope climb of despair he's on his fourth round and his biceps just gave up [Music] eamon coyne is right next to him damon coyne from ithaca new york he and tim paulson own a gym together a couple of hockey players so aiming coin here with 10 seconds and this is having coin knowing he had the deadlifts in the bag it was the rope climbs that bother him because he got to that bar and made absolute quick work of it and unfortunately for him he is capped but he does do the work he just couldn't finish across the line david johnston did it though and he did it faster than anybody else that's an event win for the veteran had the early lead he was super aggressive on that rope he had no issues on the barbell but it was a battle with johnston when they came up to that final rope johnson took the time to chalk up and he went when he was ready wanted the race he wanted to win that he got on the rope first but it was before his body could handle that speed and it was johnson that got to the top first [Applause] so david johnston picks up an event victory for him his first in his crossfit games career and for that he gets to speak with amanda krentz david i was talking to you about this competition and the lane next to you and how aware are you of what's happening next to you very aware you just can't you can't play on it you stay in your lane run your race that's what i did how do you do that how do you focus on that in the midst of an intense competition by not doing it in previous competitions hard way experience is coming into play for sure exactly where do you see yourself at the end of this obviously we know where you'd like to see yourself but um yeah i just want to finish well i want to go away and or leave here and know that everything i did was the best i could do so where that lands me is where it lands me but hopefully it's on the top well event two sure worked out well for you it did great job out there thank you david johnston picks up the victory three minutes and 20 seconds beverage in 329 and then nunu costa is at the end of your top three level up an age 45 to 49 coming your way as we come toward the back end just five more age groups remain here in event number two you've been with us all afternoon this will look familiar for you this is the final men's division that we have and that is the 45 to 49 division five rounds fourth time one row climb they will be legless and the five deadlifts will still be at 345 pounds still the six minutes matt detman out of blue city athletics he is the other half of taylor stride who you'll see on the team competition former member of mayhem independence justin lasalla veteran games athlete giulio silvino very veteran games athlete but still looking to break through onto a podium he'll be in lane 10 and then uh it's all all the americans are in 11 through 19. tim demo has been here several times mike kern over from the east coast outside new york city is a games veteran as well you asked me in the previous heat what did i expect to slow these athletes down i said it was a legless rope climb and i'm gonna actually take it now to some of the barbell with this legless rope climb we have a lot of lats going on and that also is what you're gonna use when you go to that barbell at 345 pounds for these guys it is a heavier load they their legs are fatigued more from what they've done earlier and with the deadlift so it takes a lot on your back when your legs are fatigued it's going to put even more in your lats i saw a few athletes in the last division kind of doing that little shift in their back to kind of squeak things out you do not want to pull back muscle and throw your back out on any deadlift so i do expect to see possibly some slowing on that barbell [Music] underway here it's all about form as well when things start to get heavy it's very easy to break your form and then it just makes your life all that more or less fun [Music] see a lot of belts and that's smart too you know use the proper equipment this early competition if you can that they know they have that transition from the road to the bar the rope or that bar will roll forward so you always have a little longer between the transition so it is a good time to tighten up that belt you can unlock yourself with personalized sleep recovery and strain insights from whoop goodwoof.com crossfit for thirty dollars off of your membership that is at whoop.com [Music] closing in here on the first minute here as these athletes make their way out to the barbell for round number two and as you would expect in the middle of the field that's where your leaders come from right now jason grubb mike kern 45 years old he's on the younger end of the division [Music] springs in colorado so basically if you're from colorado you're in great shape right now a little different tempo than the previous heat they're keeping up with their capacity and really i like what we're seeing on the barbell nice technique they may have learned from watching that previous heat go so fast in the first round second round it's gonna blow up your backs and your legs and you it's really all about how you finish up this event how round four and five looks from a coach's perspective you're seeing the same weights that 49 year old is lifting and that a 16 year old is lifting in this competition what's different working with athletes in that broad of an age scope that a 16 year old might have to worry about with 345 or a 49 year old might worry about uh all the years what your body has been through and just knowing your limits really at this age in the masters it can be when you know your form starts to break down like you said younger athletes can bounce back a little bit more but one little pull one little thing in your back a shoulder a hip it really is that much takes that much more to get back from and you can't do that in an event or in a competition like this [Music] just move their barbells forward at almost the exact same time they're still both in second and third place right now the recovery will be the interesting thing for all these athletes after a heavy day one snatch still to come today for the final time three minutes into a six minute time capped event so it's going to be all about how fast these guys can pick up that bar side to side quite literally and slight hesitation opened the door and jason grubb used that to open a big lead so jason grubb edges out mike kern in just over three minutes and 30 seconds [Music] still plenty of points to be had here justin lasalla he and mike kern are kind of two peas in a pod both from garden city new york so justin lazala is gonna finish in third place and if you're from garden city new york now this is your event those two guys have worked together for a very long time as jeremiah head will come in fourth we just showed you lucan though who is still going back to the rope he has hit a wall [Music] head just went to take off his belt and realized taking off his shirt was easier [Music] julio silvino number one overall seed coming out of the age group online qualifier he's still looking for a podium finish in this his fourth games he's always been there but this week has been the tough breakthrough for him jason right now is kind of going through those same experiences just trying to dig down deep with this couplet with these two specific moves it was absolutely the possibility for this kind of trap and that wall to be hit and he did he really did fall into it it was early that he was cruising but if you're not aware of your pacing you're not aware of just kind of grip management this can easily happen inside a minute here until the cap and still half the field is still out there competing andrew kettleson in lane 14 [Music] he'll be able to finish [Music] former ohio university bobcat and member of the united states navy kennelson is able to finish so now more than half of the field will get in underneath the time cap but it looks like the rope climb is tim dimmel gonna be able to beat the six minutes looks like the rope climbs have eaten up the 45 to 49 year olds well you know we mentioned it earlier with a few other divisions that this is the first time competing live for a lot of these athletes and just seeing that feeling the other people's adrenaline other athletes connect to sometimes it is hard to contain that energy we're not used to it that's what david johnston said in the last heat how did you run your race he said experience i used to run other people's races sometimes you have to do that though winds up with the event win he beats kern and lasalla the new york guys luke and i was our early leader but really grub and kern put on the show later on for us when lucana kind of hit that wall the show then became all about who could get to the deadlift bar first grab her kern they raced back kern got there to make sure it was that we'll stand up getting that confirmation that it was a good rep but grub was speedy off the final deadlift bar and jason grubb with the victory is down with amanda jason this event is obviously very different from the first event of the day but you're kind of liking how these crossfit games are working out so far so far so good um first event a long run like it reminded me of the rock run two years ago really really hard work on day one and i like i like workouts that crush our souls completely and for me generally if you give me long enough i'll catch you so six laps was perfect for me to just push and push and push and then hang on with a little more at the end and then come into a sprint workout like this it was hard i'd rather run again than do this again this was really something about hanging on just enough that you don't fail so like short workouts for me hanging on hanging on hanging on and gambling a little bit on that fifth rope climb i had one more pull to hit that medal if i would have missed it game over game over well great job out there your strategy works thank you ang is great sometimes you take a chance and you win sometimes you take a chance and you lose jason grubb big winner an event two victory by two seconds over mike kern it's the name of the game dania is it not it is what's the big win controlled controlled uh gambling physical event two for the ladies 16-17 that's coming up next [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] we have made it to madison wisconsin north park to be specific it has event two of the noble crossfit games here in 2021 for the girls 16 and 17 year old division she's the 2009 women's crossfit games champion tanya wagner amanda krenz is down on the floor joel go death the rest of our crew event two is a couplet and it's a sprint six minutes with which to work tanya the rope and the deadlift which one is the more dastardly of the movement it depends on what division we're talking about what say you hear so we have a 16 to 17 year old girls division here they're going to do the one road climb legless and then they're going to do their five deadlifts this will be 215 pounds we only had two athletes in the 14 and 15 year old girls divisions to complete this event so i expect to see more with more proficiency on the rope so i hope you see that lane simon's here chad zia owner phillips from crossfit maven that's the kind of teenage breeding grounds of great crossfit athletes over the years in southeast michigan molly chacon is a scott panchik disciple in lane six from crossfit mentality in northeast ohio emma lawson in lane 10 is your top seed coming out of the age group online qualifier it is interesting to note that the number one overall seed in the girls 16 to 17 year old age bracket is not in this competition she is in the competition though that is mal o'brien who has qualified as an elite individual woman olivia sulek who we just saw in lane number 11 she was also had an opportunity to do that she competed at the mid-atlantic crossfit championships in the semifinals did very well she is here as a teenager i think with those showings it shows it just tells you the capacity and the ability level of these ladies [Music] underway here for the 16 and 17 year old girls this event and our broadcast brought to us in part by cbd md it's the cbd you can trust visit cbdmd.com crossfit and use the promo code crossfit to get 30 percent off of your order today tanya let's start there with this particular age group because of the fact that mal o'brien was number one overall she goes elite emma carey is also supposedly in this division she even do the qualifier she put all her eggs in the elite basket she's competing over there as well you've seen hayley adams you saw what sulekh and emma lawson did at the semifinal level what to you has changed in recent years that this group particularly on the women's side more so than the men they've been able to push to compete not as age groups but as the real deal you know i really think uh girls development a little bit earlier than some of the men in comparison just and the confidence that they have seen other ladies kind of go get into the main division uh the individuals has given them that hope and that you know that they can do it as well and the training consistency that they are able to do and just kind of get there i i still think developmentally like the fact that haley adams stayed where she did um was important to those team divisions but she's just breaking through even now but if you can get to the individuals and train among the best women it really the sooner you can get there it just elevates your game so it really depends do you want to dominate the teams or do you want to go advance yourself because your plans are to be in the individual and maybe dominate over there as well it all depends emma lawson you know we don't say that to discount the ones that are here because i don't know emma lawson competed at the semifinal round she was 24th out of the individual quarterfinal rounds like you are looking quite literally at the future of this sport right now well yeah it really does depend on you you have to know what your mental capacity is and your ability what your your commitment to the sport at that age also what are you willing to give up and what are you willing to do at this point in your life claire truax in lane 19. is currently in fourth place the fourth to advance the bar onto the fourth round of this event [Music] i think it's important you know this is such an important age division but having fun is really important as well you don't want to burn out in this sport too early i've seen it many times through the years the athletes that just can't go beyond you know they hit their number of years like i'm just so done and you know what i don't want that video for these girls first time we've seen sophie shaft she is towards the front of the pack in lane 13. the american ninja warrior competed on that television show a couple of times once as a youth athlete wants us as an elite as we make that distinction throughout this event so this the legless rope climb you figure for sophie chef this is right in her wheelhouse but you'll notice the tape on her right shoulder she actually got hurt on american ninja warrior so she's still coming back from that and still throwing down at a real high level right now [Applause] lawson is your leader though on the right making sure to get that leg lock she's scary good [Music] emma lawson's going to finish in three minutes and 30 seconds sophie shaft is gonna be right on her heels so these are the top two young ladies in the 16 and 17 year old division [Applause] truax got out early [Music] she's on round five one of four young ladies currently on round five with two minutes left to go here in event number two [Applause] maria jose vargas on the right elias telis on the left of your screen with the pink hair so they now join the class of six that are on their final rope climb this fifth rope climb and now you know it's not so much of a race between the two of them when you look around the field and you know you've only had two athletes to complete it's more important that you finish you take a look at that time on the clock and you just play just finishing is where is really fine so no need to race get ahead of yourself even for that one placement if you're not ready jazz owner phillips here so she'll finish in the top five inside five minutes and the cap will become an issue here so this now becomes and you have to be smart about it but tanya this becomes how many reps can i get i've got to get in front of everybody and you have to become uber conscious of what's around you finishing this rope climb is going to be massive on the leaderboard ah it is that is devastating to get near the top some of these lasers looking at the ropes that's a huge rope climb telise just finished she is now back to the deadlifts the 16 year old out of eto crossfit down in brazil great training ground in one of the fastest growing countries for this sport it's submitted a team to the games this year for mix brazil so telis is done 10 seconds under the cap limited number of athletes able to finish here in event two for the 16 and 17 year old girls but it makes the performances just all that more impressive at the top emma lawson she comes in as the favorite out of the age group online qualifier out of her performance in the semifinals and she backs it up here on day one she was at the crossfit games in 2019 stood on the podium on the third place position missed out last year put a lot of time in her training she dominated this event from beginning to end and it's going to be all lost in here she was just very strong with that barbell not an issue at all she was really efficient on her rope climbed 20 foot legless seemed to be you no issue for her the way she timed that out grip wasn't a factor to make sure she had clean reps through she's a very smart athlete she looks like she knows what she's doing very aware and i'm anxious to see her throughout the rest of this competition i know that emma lawson did her first ever podcast interview leading up to the games so let's go down to amanda she does her first interview at the 2021 crossfit games emma i'm curious about what the first rope climb in this competition was like compared to the final rope climb you did um it was definitely a lot harder than i thought it would be the last rope climb i could definitely feel my pull starting to go but yeah first one felt really good because it was fresh but do you have to change technique or what do you do um on the first one just to start a little bit quicker i was just doing smaller pulls um just a little faster and then by the end i was just using my whole body to help keep me up so yeah as a teenager in this sport competing at this level a lot of people may be curious about what kind of time you're spending training yeah i definitely dedicate a lot of time to my training um but i also try to have a balanced life you know with everything else too so so far so good with all of that thanks emma thank you it's good to be a kid like this is fun it's gonna be a kid that's super cool dominique and then go tell your friends that's the best thing about it emma lawson beats sophie's shaft by five seconds jazz owner phillips gets in inside of five minutes but again like the domination between who finishes first and second and then the rest of the field in every age bracket has been incredible to see move along here on event two for the women 35-39 age group this is the youngest side of the masters athletes just like on the men's side you're going to see a lot of names here that you know and are very familiar with the weight it's heavy the weight stays the same for these ladies they are still going to have that 215 pound barbell they have the legless rope climb five rounds per time we have a six minute time cap but we are we're gonna see a lot of ladies that we have seen in the past take a look at your lane assignments i was stuck on standings and leaderboard like they knew those weren't right uh take a look at your late assignments whitney galen former individual games athlete at the elite level annetta tucker lives in the uk competes under the czech republic flag free gaipa qualified last year finally able to make her debut here this season in 2021 second page april payne was the winner in this age group at the masters fitness collective championships that crossfit sanctioned masters event that happened last year without the games corinne lemieux has been here many times and chelsea hughes actually good for her to be able to compete because at 2017 at the games was injured never got to kelly jackson out of st louis and april payne mentioned free guy as [Music] ladies and well starts with a legless rope in no time the youngest division and we really we only have three returning athletes in this division the rest are young bucks making their way in here with everything that happened last year they're either masters this year so they're in and so it's great to see some of these names you know you don't hear for a few years but that doesn't mean they stop training they absolutely don't they've just gotten better as well so here's their time to kind of show what they've been doing and you know there's always a lot of hype with the 35 to 39 division because it is you're like really a master these ladies are masters but they are competing uh just as as much as any other individual athlete putting the time in because it is such a competitive division somebody's happy speaking about you know the hours of training two or three sessions two hours a day being in the younger division they're still capable of putting in that volume this is christelle l devs i don't know this for a fact i just know it's true she is from guadalupe an island in the caribbean france the only one we've had here at the crossfit games these athletes know that they don't want that sticky point that they were just watching some of the younger division hit on the legless so the name of the game is commit when you're ready aggressive short pulls here what's the difference for you between the the slower bigger pull and that real quick slow or real quick small bite time under tension if you have the capacity to be that quick and the strength in your grip and your arms to hold on your arms are bent like that just a lot your biceps your back has to stay tight but if you can be quick it's so much less time under tension that's what you want kelly jackson now just ripping out these deadlifts her fourth crossfit games here this year she was team in 2016. twice as an individual most recently in 2015. member of the crossfit seminar staff if you sign up to take your l1 your l2 you might run into here currently in second place and again you see those quick stabs but then as you get to the top it comes down to what's left in the tank and watch other arms length and then you it's hard to hold that that uh l position in your arm that bent elbow and that's what happens as soon as that you kind of let go there you have to rely on the kip from your hips because you no longer have that pull in your arms and that you know what's happening right around that 15 foot range where we kind of wanted to see what was going to happen with these legos with that extra height yeah what's the difference in the test we know what a 15-foot road climb looks like let's add five feet in the qualifiers they weren't tested with legless but they were tested with quite a few rope climbs after those ghbs which were a big effect on the legs you know might as well have been about like this that was the when your legs were trashed kelly jackson in lane 16 still moving toward the front of the pack the most recent of now three athletes to have rolled their barbells forward on to round five christelle l devs right now just trying to buy some time before climbing the rope here trying to maintain this lead more than halfway through this event running out of gas [Music] massive and it opens up the door here for lauren gravatt to just cruise through for a potential event win although she gets beat down on the outside kelly jackson who had been watching in third place took the opportunity with those two going head-to-head to sneak up behind annetta tucker finishes as well and that's a spread on the field where you're that far away not being able to you know not seeing what else is going on and i said it earlier seems like i think it was hours ago that when they're all out here everybody in your division you know exactly what the standings are going to be for your event or for this event when you're looking around so way to sneak in there kelly jackson well sometimes if you've got a competitor right next to you hey i'm head to head with you i'm head to head with you you're worried about yourselves somebody down eight nine lanes slides right in [Music] not the first time joel and it won't be the latest has hit a wall after just crushing the beginning of this event and that's the shame like that is it it's it's not just a no rep and you just pick the barbell back up again you wait and it's costly it's so costly done in lane 17 so chelsea hughes will finish yeah whitney glenn also done i know she's a good deadlifter because gave me a couple tips when i dropped in once but did you listen to her sometimes you're a good athlete carrying me finishes 15 seconds left to go here the legless rope climb and particularly specifically the 20-foot legless rope line that's been the separator this is a legless this is a 20-foot legless rope climb event that's what it is what it boils down to the dead lifts are a foil kelly jackson found a way to conquer them both it is an event win for the woman from gambit here we go ladies and gentlemen kelly jackson early on was just aggressive on the barbell el dibs it was who we were watching though here with the rope climbs she got back to the bar looked to be your early leader but that tempo was not enough for her because kelly jackson she had a little bobble there on that fall looks like she had a little limb not sure she had to walk off that ankle but it didn't do too much because she was able to keep up look strong with those legs on her deadlift that was something we missed they're off the road and even with the bobble she was able to squeak in under l dibs and gravel we were watching their little race there kelly jackson is with amanda krenz so often throughout the day kelly we've been talking about athletes who just put their head down and they go during this workout but you admittedly said slow and steady was the key for you so why is that uh the deadlift was a comfortable weight but it can tax your grip uh 20-foot rope climbs are something that i'm not super familiar with so i just needed to be smart on the rope and so i broke up the deadlifts which probably put me back of the heat early on um but i was able to maintain my speed throughout and so it came down to like who's willing to get on the rope a little faster you talked about having to be smart in an event like this and quite frankly probably every event you need to be smart which comes with age uh yeah i think i've competed at the games before as an individual and every year i go into it and i'm like i'm so fit and ready and then three two one go starts and i play other people's games and i think in my 35 to 39 age group uh as i've mastered up i've gotten smarter wiser and i know my limit so i know that like i can't go hot out of the gate and i trust that and it took took a couple years we look forward to watching you this week thank you always play scrabble never play chess play your own game not what they brought kelly jackson picks up the event win 40 to 44 for the ladies coming up next [Music] event two for the women here 40 to 44. still that 215 pound barbell tanya i i mean we've seen it so many times through so many different age groups now what changes for this particular bracket for this age group it's going to be even more of the rope climb the legless being at that height that we're at you know uh the barbell 215 pounds these ladies are used to seeing heavier loading like that but as their age goes up and the deadlift is usually something for inner masters athletes that we are more careful with that we need to be more careful and so i think we're going to see some tempo changes out of the gate with this age division so you were going to recognize some names from the previous bracket if you don't recognize the name in lane 7. where have you been becca voigt miller she's back her 13th appearance at the crossfit games ball state university alum sarah blunk in lane six shout out to her real quick uh and stephanie wah is back at the games after an injury in 2019 in lane 12 multi-time champion in this bracket but becca voigt miller would it be the games without her no like no like literally like literally it's not like she's just one of those people you always have to see so we are thrilled to see her here i'm so excited to get to talk about her again and see her in competition you want to talk about experience and just knowing your limits knowing capacity knowing being through so many tests over your lifetime playing your game that's her well this is a couplet we will have a chipper hopefully you'd think by the end of the weekend and while we wait for that you can join the chipper it's noble's loyalty program members of the chipper get free shipping and early access to new products and restocks right now members of the chipper will earn double points with a purchase from the noble crossfit games collection visit nobleproject.com the chipper and become a member today athletes are all currently on their second round hey look who's in first becca voight miller right back to the deadlift three event wins in the career of becca boyd she was third as a master in 2019 and as an elite individual in twenty great job eleven last dance [Music] room rebecca miller she's making her way back to the world of very determined here to this six minute time capped event becca voigt continues to be up front sonia mcmillan kelly marshall also near the front of the pack here laura nielsen names we've seen a lot leading the way here in event number two and these deadlifts look like child's play of rebecca being used to the loading she has been seeing over the years in the individual competition you know that she's been lifting 205 forever at high volume you know uh 10 years so that load is no big deal for her what i'd like to see is how these ladies have the pants on uh something we didn't speak about was kind of the knee sleeves down the ankle you know some people could say why they're legless but because of the descent it's so important when you hit that top bar you want to quick get that wrap and get everything off your hands as soon as possible to preserve your grip and you need the pants and that to do so becca voigt right now is in second she's chasing kelly marshall on the left kelly marshall out of crossfit nottingham and nottingham england 40 years old her first year in this division [Music] just for perspective for you kelly marshall's listed deadlift pr 162 kilos so something north of 350 pounds so then lifting this about half of that you execute where you you know in when you're given those events that are in your wheelhouse and you have the capacity just had a real time failure there for virginia those can start to add up and we're about the time in this event where they really start to matter kelly marshall is all alone back to the deadlift bar kelly marshall an event win in the 40 to 44 age bracket for kelly marshall now the question is who will come in behind her it is going to be becca boyd so they were neck and neck the entire way and becca voigt who has been so good and so strong for so long but still eluding her is that gold medal looking for potentially here in 2021 she looked happy about that finish though stephanie in the white able to finish in lane 12. so those are your first three not in the slightest unexpected sonia mcmillan all right we've got a minute and 15 seconds left this comes down to the question we've asked so many times who is going to be able to get that final rope climb because tanya so many times we've seen people struggle nail it and then just go crank out five deadlifts well yeah it's because they've also had that much time to rest that they're if they're if there even was any leg fatigue we're good there it's really just about the grip so we're seeing a lot of different techniques here on the road and it's you know they're getting to that 15-foot mark kelly friel here she's got time as she goes again you hang it on for dear life on the final rope climb then you get to the deadlift bar five piece of cake and done kelly friel will finish gonna be hunted down though kelly friel is done maria grotom was right behind her unable to catch her but both do come across the line inside the six-minute cap and it looks like those will be the final athletes to do so [Music] so we hit the cap here for the 40 to 44 year old women in our penultimate heat of event number two we were watching becca voigt commenting on her technique on the deadlift bar on the road climbs she was aggressive she was staying real tight really nice rebecca voigt nothing that she did wrong but really it was marshall kelly marshall that had the speed she was able to keep her speed and the rope climbs her transitions were very fast she ran to every single barbell she was able to just get ahead in those final rounds just over becca voigt and over stephanie wah speed paid off for her in this sprint couplet games debut for kelly marshall she picks up event win number one in her crossfit games career and she's down with amanda krentz kelly you said rope climbing is one of your favorite movements but this is higher than what you're used to so how did that affect you out here today yeah i think a little bit of a surprise when used to 15 foot and it's 20 but it was just really about trying to judge my own fatigue for that extra range um in terms of when to go again for my for my climbs but i love a legless rope clam your events so far and there have only been two of them but they've been very different how are you feeling about the crossfit games so far this year oh it's mind-blowing i've never been here before and it's absolutely brilliant it's just yeah this is a dream come true so we're happy to have you here good job today thank you i just like the vocabulary when you come from the uk because i never would have said it's absolutely mind-blowingly brilliant brilliant but it's great it is it's great she was brilliant kelly marshall mind-blowingly brilliant here in event number two she wins by 15 seconds over becca voigt miller and stephanie wah an interesting trio of names to watch here as the week progresses you know it we've said it it would become interesting to see who could finish the rope climb a whole minute went by until kelly friel was able to finish that becomes a massive one rep gateway to get you to those final five deadlifts and a finisher's mark on the leaderboard [Music] 45-49 is the final of our heats out here for event number two [Music] the event description still 215 pounds tanya still one legless rope climb i don't think i mean we've touched on it a lot but i don't think we've necessarily paid the credence to how different the extra five feet really truly is today for these women absolutely it is when it's a legless rope climb and that's what we've been watching the past how many heats and for these ladies in 45 to 49 division it's so impressive for everybody out there listening and watching and you think about your rope your own rope climbs this is super impressive that we're testing that at this ladies division and even testing the loading at that 215 pound bar but many of these athletes we have seen for uh years i can't wait to watch annie sakamoto i was just gonna say sorry i stole it from you we will see her on the second page here on our lane assignments jen dieter janet black names we've seen for a very long time as well here in the masters divisions and there is one of the original nasty girls in lane 11 annie sakamoto kelly edelman we'll see in lane 14 as well any sakamoto if you've ever done the workout annie that's who it is and you know there are so many people who are inspired by master's athlete but my first inspiration was annie sakamoto doing a pull-up when she was pregnant that inspired me in 2007 to get my first pull-up and to to say if this woman pregnant can do pull-ups there is no reason me in my 20s i shouldn't be able to and that she's my inspiration so i am thrilled to see her out here um as always competing as so many people are in our community and the thing people forget about that original nasty girls video they did strict ring muscle ups [Music] very quickly to the top of the zeus rig and on to these deadlifts five at a time for five rounds [Music] annie's form is brilliant she is um just he moves so well she always does all of her movements she no wasted energy nobody said effort she's a great competitor she's a fun competitor to be out there with i got a chance to be with her at the rogue invitational few years back and she literally is what she is she's happy and she's a fun competitor she's so fun to be around she enjoys being out there and like she literally loves just dominating and pushing herself the 47 year old greek woman is our current leader in lane three tracy o'connell just behind her so there is sean tadaki out of the core force crossfit in athens [Music] karen mcadam currently on the outside is in second place right now there are now three barbells though you can see on your screen having advanced into the round three section each one of those white lines on the screen of course designating a new round it really it's around three just like any other workout you know it's round three and this event is where you kind of see some separation and who did what they you know what their bodies could handle who went at this appropriate speed for their capacity saw just have to clamp down so no rep on that rope climb as any sakamoto just cruises through one [Music] clamp and then they can come back down but they can't touch their legs to the rope until they're hand touched so that's on me that may have been on the way down for chanting she works her way back to the world annie sakamoto now though right on her heels so annie is currently in second place karen mcadam with this roll forward of the barbell will be in third [Music] karen is competing with her sixth crossfit games she was second to the legendary helen harding back in 2017. so talk about names you'll recognize there's no shortage of them short pulls keeping our hips there tight two yeah and this is where it's hard to keep with bent elbows she was able to make that andy though right behind her then goes with the spanish wrap on the way down you talked about wearing the pants save your legs from some rope burn [Music] now interesting imagine to see do these ladies stay unbroken or to save the grip do they forgo a few seconds ah there it is annie this could be what makes a difference although she's not giving up a ton of time she's not and it's close enough [Music] but you can't ungrip those unbroken reps to get that back even if we walk back even if you make up the time there's still the fatigue factor so it's not always the clock it's how the muscles feel and now he takes a second so just waiting right now although same goes for annie sakamoto and you can see them going to the deadlift bar shaking out their forearms so you know the fatigue is there sean thudaki goes leg movement's always been interesting in this you saw becca boyd and ago and andy's doing it a little bit too kind of that bicycle climb to give a little bit of just a moment of weightlessness and annie sakamoto oh there it is takes advantage annie sakamoto jumps in front after the no rep for sean thudaki slow and steady wins the race annie sakamoto is five deadlifts away from an event win in event number two annie sakamoto in five minutes are you nasty event win [Applause] [Music] so smart she absolutely could have held on but it was the right thing to do karen mcadam now will jump from third into second with sean thudaki still waiting back there at the rope climbs and there are some other finishers now coming across so that one failure on a legless row prime just opens not a door tanya but like a french door a castle drop draw bridge door i like the drawbridge sure did that's exciting you know and to have that when that when a move like that pays off for one and doesn't for the other ah it's just so big frustrating italian effort by tsudaki there was and she went for it it's good it was gutsy she she did she she was right there and if you're gonna get the push just didn't pay off the way she was hoping but for annie sakamoto it did years of experience more than anyone else out here doing crossfit longer than any of us annie sakamoto making her fifth appearance here at the crossfit games chance to really shine here since she's gone to the masters route of course a team athlete as well an individual elite athlete as well but putting her fitness on display i like it you don't go for the water you go for the monster no no it's monster water don't be confused these are monster waters they are um they are they are monster waters all smiles oh she always is the thing with the name annie you smile a lot um how fun you know i often wonder what goes through her head knowing how many people she's inspired in just the fact that she's out here and where this sport has come when it wasn't even a sport when it was just this thing in a little gym uh you know it's just i know what i think and she was so many years before me her second ever workout had a pommel horse like can you imagine let's talk about today back to event to what we just saw it was really shot the donkey came out feisty she was aggressive on that barbell she was aggressive and very confident on the rope she had the early lead just ahead and didn't look out of control she really was strong it was the fourth row plan where she had lupus flowing and then she started to race with annie i think this is here where we see the race the battle was here when they got to their fourth barbell and the difference in strategy annie took them as singles shantadaki held on and she did end up breaking them to roll but it just was too taxing on a grit they both came to the rope and they were shaking out but the fact that annie had that a little bit more left in her grip because of what she did on the barbell was the key for annie winning event number two down amanda credence find out a little bit about annie's strategy down the back stretch annie the last rope climb you took a moment what are you doing in that moment before you ascend the ropes i'm making sure my grip is totally ready because i don't want to have any missed reps it's you know obviously with a legless rope climb it's so costly uh so i really wanted to kind of be patient make sure my grip was ready to execute obviously it worked very well for you great job on that thank you what motivates you to keep training at this level year after year i just love it i really do truly enjoy training i'm an affiliate owner i'm an athlete i'm a mother i'm a coach and i just feel so grateful that i get to be all of those things and i really enjoy being all of those things and so it's it's just pure enjoyment of all of it we enjoy watching you great job so much thank you congrats to annie sakamoto she picks up an event victory here at the 2021 noble crossfit games and that wraps event number two for all of the age groups and the adaptive athletes here on a tuesday afternoon in wisconsin legless rope climbs laggy rope climbs dumbbell snatches at 100 pounds deadlifts which direction do i go make some noise for me that might have been a mustache we saw the gamut here this afternoon in madison wisconsin at the end of the day it just felt good to be back again to be here in madison to have the 2021 crossfit games much more to come our coverage resumes tomorrow for the age groups for tonya wagner for amanda krenz the rest of our crew my name is joel gadette so long from madison in the 2021 noble frosted games [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you
