the situation sucks you can't get anything for new for new unless you spend a lot which we think is stupid that's why we went ahead and took the advice that people have been asking me now forever jay do a video about old hardware because you can still buy some of that stuff so that's why we have an eight-year-old platform with a seven-year-old graphics card and we're gonna see how well it actually performed today the all-new 5000 d mid tower airflow case from corsair features an optimized front panel for maximum ventilation while the integrated cable management and tempered glass side panel means you can show off more of your components and not your cable mess to see the full list of specs and to learn more about the 5000ds flexible fan mounting options perfect for both air cooling and water cooling enthusiasts follow the sponsored link in the description below all right let's talk about the platform here like i said the platform is eight years old uh it's going to be going on nine years old pretty soon now here's the thing things have started moving along pretty quickly in terms of like core count scaling just took off and now you've got amazing amounts of cores uh sitting on your mainstream cpus um vram inside of graphics cards has really taken off you can get you know 16 gigs of vram in amd cards or up to 24 gigs and an nvidia card with the 30 90. this is a z97 this is a 4770k albeit not the highest cpu you could have put in there because the devil's canon 4790k came out after that which was essentially a bin 4770k slight difference of the architecture though i've got on here a be quiet air cooler which is way better than any cooler we would have had back in the era because of vapor chambers and stuff being very prevalent um direct contact copper tubes but this cpu was notoriously hot extremely extremely hot but we got uh 16 gigabytes of hyperx ddr3 here yes ddr3 so you can see it is an older platform as we start talking about that and i've got sitting on here a card that's part of my collection yeah j such first you've got collections of graphics cards i collect kingpin cards and this is one of my kingpin cards this is an evga gtx 980 classified kingpin that's before the kingpin like had its own designation as a separate tiered card it was a kingpin edition classified cards that was before they got rid of the classified but came out with the kingpin but it only has four gigabytes of vram there's more to systems than just core counts and megahertz there's the architecture changes uh obviously this is ddr3 not ddr4 so it's running much slower ram in fact i've not even gone in and done xmp profile or anything on it so it's probably only running out like 1333. haven't even checked i should probably do that but anyway moving on the cpu is a 22 nanometer cpu the funny thing is the very next generations when we went down to 14 and we're still on 14 when it comes to intel that tells you how long it's been and why we make fun of saying 14 plus plus plus plus plus but 4 gigabytes of vram much slower vram than uh what we're used to now it's gddr4 no 5 gddr5 and it didn't have g6x or any of the x error correcting memory and stuff like we see today but it's only got 4 gigabytes of it the core clock is extremely slow versus today's cards today's cards will hit 2000 without even trying this one crashes at 1610 it runs at 12 just over 1200 megahertz out of the box base clock 13 something boost it'll go up to 1410 we pushed it to 1400 or 1574 megahertz because if you're using old hardware and it's still running you've got adequate cooling and you're not overclocking it you really should think about it because when we talk about modern titles now you really are starting to push the limits of hardware that's sold so that's why i took a few pieces of advice and quite a few emails and tweets and stuff with people saying jay do a video about older hardware because here's the thing when i do these giveaways and stuff like we just did our 3080 and 2080 giveaway by the way congratulations to michael v in pennsylvania and ryan i of the united kingdom for winning those cards they're on their way so guys stay tuned for our next giveaway we'll be doing one soon but the reason why i mention that is when i do these giveaways and people like to always say feel bad for me i have a such and such i can't tell you how many people are like feel bad for me i'm still on a 980. do you know what people would love to have your 980 do many people love to have a graphics card period sorry but if you're on a 980 you're not exactly poor people and you're not exactly suffering so stop pretending like you are however when it comes to scalping and graphics card prices and such the 900 series is pretty much unscathed by it the 10 series is a little bit affected by it you start looking like 1080 ti and stuff like that they'll still go for like 500 bucks a piece or more however the 980 non-ti right now looking at ebay we got a gtx 980 windforce uh three-time or 3x ocs the triple fan 113 and 50 cents we've got 166 dollar version of the same card 190 version of the founders edition 107.50 for the msi gaming 4g 200 for the geforce 980 ti acx that's a ti version which has two more gigs of vram 980 ti classified which is higher than this obviously 276 dollars so now we're gonna see whether or not that's even worth considering because you can't play games on it then who cares so we've got three games we're going to kind of try right here we've got kind of a small medium and large for your esports doesn't need a whole lot of processing or graphics power we're going to do some rocket league when it comes to your mid-range we're going to be looking at i guess we'll call doom eternal the mid-range because the vulcan api and id software just being so good at optimizing their engine that's one that fools you into thinking you're getting some crazy high-end graphics out of some crazy hardware but it will run really good on mid-range stuff or even old stuff like this and then we're going to also take a look at dirt rally 2 which is a much more demanding title so we need to see how especially when it comes to cpus we need to see how this eight and seven-year-old product performs today uh okay so let's talk about this the weird thing is some of these games have cloud saves and some of the bugs we might see right now are settings that are trying to apply from other yeah see that just crashed entirely what i want to mention is a lot of titles today will cloud save settings as well and when you go from modern stuff suddenly to not having hardware that can meet those requirements and you start demanding too much vram or etc from your graphics card things like this are gonna happen so we might end up seeing some weird bugs so i'm going to try and differentiate what is just some sort of a weird bug because of the cloud save versus um you know the actual hardware limitations themselves and there are some stuff we can talk about in the settings all right so some of the settings you want to consider um this game this title doesn't tell you how much vram it's using but vram on an old graphics card like this is going to be the number one thing you need to keep in mind you don't want to exceed it uh the four gigabytes on this which i could have swore it had more than that but yeah four gigabytes okay so this is already putting everything basically at high and whatnot but that's fine i have not played rocket league in forever so don't judge me or go ahead and judge me i don't care 250 fps locked oh god his his view is so weird does that stop right there look at that i'm playing on next account right now i don't want to mess mine up these red numbers right these are yeah so these are some crazy spikes in latency there not latency but uh frame pacing and stuff so there are some issues there my only issue with the game right now is me you know it's not anything wrong with the hardware you could definitely play rocket league and anything else you wanted with this comp this particular setup when it comes to esports oh that shot now we're winning well i guess if there was proof that uh you know you can still play and have a good time on old hardware dude the rocket league curse i know right open nets hardest shot so fps was locked at 250 some of the frame pacing was a little bit off and there was a lot of so you would see a major dip in fps and a major spike in frame pacing that on a game like this could actually cause you to have some issues if you've never played it though because you're trying to build your computer and get it up and running you won't necessarily know the difference but if you're sitting there with new stuff and you're waiting on a graphics card 980 and rocket league can clearly get the job done let's go and take a look at doom eternal the nice thing i love id software simply because of the fact that they just when vulcan came out they were like yes we are doubling down on vulcan we are going to utilize the api because it's amazing in terms of headroom or overhead the other thing we have forgot to mention when i was going through the system specs windows 7 and windows 8 windows 8 had just come out around the time this hardware did since then windows 8.1 became a thing and then windows 10 and all of the updates on windows 10 windows 10 was designed to be lightweight and i think that sort of changed over the years because it was designed to be more of a tablet os and now they do have a very heavy desktop version of it however it's supposed to be more lightweight than than like windows 8.1 was so that could be helping with a little bit of our overhead usage here now an important thing to note here is we're only targeting 1080p gaming so you can see right here at least in the overlay we've got our 4770k here's our frame pacing and timing here um hdr is off obviously latest drivers right there vulcan api with a 980. so we're getting 130 fps in the menu remember the menu is rendered but when you want to look at this video settings here at least this will tell you how much the estimated vram usage is going to be for the settings so for instance if we came down here and we were to turn on um overall quality let's make that ultra nightmare look at that see it goes exclamation point because it would estimate using almost 7 gigabytes of vram we only have 4 267 at least that's what it's reading as available so we want to make sure that we go below that so nightmare brings us to 62 54. ultra brings us to 52 high brings us to 4 000. now what we can do there is we can actually start to see the texture pool side is what uses the most we got to leave that high we can't go any higher however shadow quality and we'll go back to high on that some of this other stuff we can move up without affecting the vram usage it doesn't mean it's not going to impact performance but it's not going to impact the amount of vram we have available so we're just about where we can leave it and not have ourselves have any sort of a stuttering mess because here's what's gonna happen if we exceed the vram it's not gonna crash what's gonna happen is the the ram pool is gonna start pulling from system memory that is a much much much slower interface especially on ddr3 uh than just keeping the vram usage underneath what our native vram is on sort of on board of our graphics card first things first it is very smooth it's extremely smooth um as expected what i'm gonna be looking for here are any sort of stutters where we might be exceeding see how we go we're going red right there look at that see that now what when red was our cpu not our gp our gpu stayed green our cpu went red so if we look at the system requirements here um the minimum system requirements just say intel core i5 3.3 or amd ryzen 3 3.1 they don't say which family which generation or anything and that's stupid because the core i5 has been around for a lot longer than the cpu even now if we look at recommended it recommends a core i7 6700k which this is two generations older than or ryzen 7 1800x which is this is just as older than 8 gigabytes of system memory we got 16 gigs so we're good there and then it's recommending an rtx 2060 or a gtx 1080 or a vega 56 or higher so we're under specs all around not on the minimum but if you want nightmare mode now it's like 9900k 16 gigs of vram or 16 gigs of ram and a 2080 ti or higher so we're on ultra in a lot of these settings i think we're in between where we should be and i think we're pushing a little bit farther than we should yeah it's not turning red in the middle of a fight which is awesome yeah the cpu seems to be doing all right actually i feel like maybe they're being a little um reserved or com conservative yeah oh see that stutter right there look at that the gpu stuttered look everything's red out here oh weird why is the fps so low right here it's because of the distance drawn oh you're right now look as i come closer over here and it starts blocking this stuff look at the fps and it shoots back up yeah see out here things are a little bit more i don't want to say troublesome but it's feeling it a little more out here obviously okay so doom eternal clearly is able to run just fine on this hardware still at high settings at 1080p not bad let's go ahead now and take a look at dirt rally 2 2.0 because this one here believe it or not it's going to be a bit more cpu intensive than i think gpu intensive wait what okie dokie i mean it's not it's not zl1 but still okie dokie whatever they say all right so 192 fps i don't think anyone can complain about that so look at that fps fps is doing great whoa there we go i've been in here i've been in here this right here is where we were doing we had to do the they set up the circle cones we had to do like big circles but i'm really sucking at it right now i mean this is a bit more power than i think you would typically run okay now we're on ultra ah too much dude that dirt looks so good it can't be a game called dirt and have the dirt look bad i like the how it's truly causing ruts in the ground can't imagine doing that in an actual camaro oh i mean it's consistent though you know what's funny is the 80 fps doesn't feel any worse than the it doesn't feel worse than 160 did like it feels the same to me is there damage oh yes dude it's getting worse dude the damage models awesome yeah the back left tire is flat all right we'll try this one more time with the s1 quattro oh oh no oh the door oh that's fine you just go faster or close see they have a flat tire though it's pulling all weird oh that's why why buy that right here yeah there's no tire on it at all oh that can happen with older hardware it just crashed well i mean that's possible that can happen and we did move it up to ultra right so obviously we didn't have any problems we were down on high so let's uh let's talk about this real quick whether or not you should even spend any money on old hardware if you're just dying to get in pc gaming you know the real reality here is this entire setup could probably be done for under 500 we've done setups like this in the past where we build an ultra budget gaming pc in 500 before it used to be really hard to get anything done but what's happened now is i feel like the hardware improvements have been a little bit less of an impact of the overall experience versus the developers just getting better at optimizing for lower end hardware and when you optimize for lower end hardware on current specs that's kind of equal to higher end hardware of the past think about it i mean if we could buy the graphics card for 200 bucks then you could probably get a 4770k with motherboard combo for another 100 to 125 bucks looking at craigslist with you know when we were doing stuff like that for like scrapyard wars and whatnot um there's nothing else on here with the exception of a be quiet cooler i would recommend getting that cheap amazon one we showed in the past you don't need a crazy power supply this is only 177 watt gpu when it's overclocked yeah it's 160 watt gpu normally it's 177 watts being pulled in real time with the overclock uh and then we've got our samsung ssd right here so sure we do have an m.2 drive sitting in here with our games on it because you pulled it off another computer however you can get a cheap ssd and have this whole setup for about 500 bucks the problem is when it's something this old you have a hard time knowing what kind of abuse it's been through so i really wouldn't recommend going out and buying old beat up graphics cards like this or old graphics cards like this unless you trust the source that it's coming from we've done a whole video about how to buy used hardware and i'll put a link to that or have it pop out right here or link down below if i can remember because there's things you need to consider when it comes to trusting the the seller on whether or not you're going to get screwed or whether or not you just have something that's lightly used for instance this 980 has been sitting in the box ever since i did the review and it hasn't been used because not long after the 980 the 980 ti came out and that became the latest and greatest and that's what we talked about and then this just sort of sat in the box so this would be a perfect example of a graphics card that you could get because it still has the plastic on it in some spots like i don't want to peel it off but there's still plastic on it in some spots so it's an example of a card that wasn't spending its life doing crazy mining it wasn't doing any sort of like overheating while gaming in long gaming sessions because it was in a crappy case so the thermal paste is all dried out you know these are things you need to consider the cpu the same thing goes for that typically if it works it works if it doesn't it doesn't there's no like it's worn out because everything around the cpu like the cooler and the motherboard and all that is gonna have a bigger impact on the cpu working good or not if the cpu turns on and powers on it works so i mean this is an option if you're like look things just suck right now and we can't get any sort of hardware to finish your systems and you're sit i've seen i don't know how many pictures of towers are completely assembled minus the gpu maybe consider going to ebay or some sort of local uh craigslist and finding a graphics card you can trust around the 980 980 ti era or 1070 is also an equivalent to that and then be up and running and you can see right here actually enjoying playing some games i'll be honest i forgot i was even playing old hardware because i was more concerned with like trying to make the stupid turns at dirt fish that i suck at then going oh i'm going to 980 it's just not any fun you know which is totally you know far from the truth anyway there you go we've been asked to make a video about older hardware and how it still stacks up granted this is not all the modern aaa titles but at least they're titles that you can play if you're still sitting there where the void of where our graphics card should be so there you go guys sound off down below if you're still using old hardware and how it's performing for you and what the hardest game it is for your hardware to run so if you've got a system that's older put on there what your specs are and what game you're like this game is making me have to upgrade what is it so people can kind of know and if you're one of those guys it's like i have a 980 you feel bad for me no no i don't feel bad for you this is this is awesome i feel bad for that attitude
