This is always the most awkward thing about orchestra. 1- The conductor asks you to do something. 2- You think it's an idiotic thing to ask for. 3- After some unsuccessful attempts at playing what he asks for, he gives up and tells you it sounds much better 4- You try not to roll your eyes or say something rude
I don't like Bernstein's request here. He asks for woah insteah of waah - waah being the characteristic sound of the trumpet. If Elgar had wanted that tone, he'd've written for cornet.
Trumpets are brassy instruments. Asking them to be otherwise is like asking a contrabassoon to not be reedy.
