I remember being sick when I first watched this video. I had to turn it off because I thought I was having another fever dream. When I picked it up again, I realized it was true and the editing was specially weird.

Undeniably one of the greatest videos to ever grace this earth. I am always amazed at the intertwining of basketball and mythology. It is so goddamn good and I am glad to have been alive to experience it.

the dry University used to have basketball team yes that divided DeVry University one scored 141 points in a single college basketball game which most schools have never done in that same game Troy state devised opponent scored 253 points which shatters every record at every level of the sport it's a record that has gone down in the record books with the wrong score nobody has realizes but me and the burden is now on me to prove it this is the strangest most beautiful basketball game I have ever seen [Music] I have always worked for example and pick yours over living sacrifices research about the VMI I had a choice but a traditional college just wasn't for me that's all to survive points got about you learn hands-on using today's business communication technology takes teamwork and that's what I learned to write at DeVry you learn hands-on well you work with others others you take charge only on the team here because I was cars premature bride I was hardly cream it to dry I was partying al-azhar our pilot Iraqis are really not a driving force department is Isis ability anything spices available day and evening classes available in two broad Rock we're serious about success except abroad I have already been throwing mysteries about success thank you all for giving your sponsor constant surprise potential agree for what they have done to me [Music] 1989 Donbass trees and his six year of coaching at Troy State his teams are as conventional as they come they take the ball up the floor set up a play and try to score then go back and play good defense you know normal basketball one night Maestri and his assistant coach flip on ESPN and crack open a few beers Loyola Marymount is playing there so fast they're always running always shooting a year from now they'll go on to average 122 points a game an NCAA record good Lord Maestri says look at this here this is the exact opposite of the last 20 years of Don Maestri basketball it's known as the fun and gun players just run up court and shuck it as soon as they can as Maestri himself would later say it almost looks like no-one's coaching out of nowhere he announces we should play like this so he gets some blank VHS tapes backs them up and mailed them to Paul Westhead the coach at Loyola West's head fills them up a game tape and sends them back and made three devours some of the most radioactive mutated basketball the world has ever seen Loyola Marymount lived by the fast break all five guys ran onto the floor and were encouraged to shoot as soon as they wanted preferably within seven seconds if you missed it that's fine because you're playing fast and nothing is worse than not playing fast on defense you're just as impatient you go for the steal and failing that you let your opponent shoot as open as they want as long as they do with fast the idea is that you always keep everything moving you never stop you never let your opponent get set it's delicious the more mates we implemented the fun and John's the more team scored by the 1991 season Troy State averaged a staggering 111 points every game that average was helped by a 187 point showing against the rock [Music] learning the DeVry had a basketball team is like finding out H&R Block sells hamburgers I just never would have guessed DeVry is a university that specializes in Computer Sciences and accounting with a website that estimates roughly how many campuses they have right before listing the exact number of campuses they have the answer is 60 so the question is does debry have a basketball team and the answer is kinda to elaborate some of these campuses sometimes have some level of basketball teams evidence of their existence is very hard to come by there's a record of one of their Florida campuses losing a game 97 to 39 a few years ago they've got a Houston campus that apparently did play in some kind of college conference that now displays rec league ball and there's some evidence that there was a women's team in Philadelphia at some point DeVry basketball is like Bigfoot search it on YouTube and the first modern-day footage you'll find titled DeVry got a basketball ball team looks like it's filmed in secret I'd like to think this young man is crawled to an air conditioning duct to bring us this rare footage of DeVry in the wild I mean it's pretty funny when I was a kid I associated to bribe with the commercials there on TV every 20 minutes abroad they typically featured actual DeVry graduates speaking from the heart not actor you can apply definitely not actors the knowledge and training I got from DeVry gave me the skills and confidence I needed to succeed call 1-800 247 7 800 day and evening classes available gibran we're serious about suspect [Music] the year this commercial aired was the year two brides the cater basketball team took their three and 15 record to Troy Alabama they didn't have much of an origin story they were just kind of there the season prior they played a game in which they only suited up five players and one of them got in foul trouble so they put him on the bench and played the rest of the half with four guys then their coach George Trawick was thrown out of the game so they were four dudes with no coach they just kept on playing like that this is what I love about a de Vries Decatur basketball team you could annihilate him by 50 points but you could not slow him down they were going to play hard every minute of every game they played really hard the time and Troy sapien by a score of 187 to whatever this is a recurring theme this is a little confusing so let me back up in 1991 DeVry played tri-state and the final score was either 187 to 116 or 187 to 117 so which one is well Troy state 1991 yearbook has a photo that shows 117 points on the scoreboard and the next day the LA Times agrees 117 but a year later the same LA Times said it was 116 years later in 98 another newspaper story says the same thing did they change the score I don't know Troy 2012 media guide puts it back at 117 a granted this is a one point difference and a total blowout is this a big deal not really but in 1992 DeVry played Troy state again and they lost either 258 141 or 253 141 for decades everyone agreed that the final score was 258 141 225 years later we have a dissenting opinion everyone but John accepts that score so who's missing from that group you guessed it your old buddy John so where exactly do I get off watching this defense well my credentials include a high school diploma and a lot of time so there are two games that happen a quarter century ago with scores that are slightly wrong who really cares right except for this the two goons in question are recognized at the second highest scoring game in NCAA history and the highest scoring game in n-c-double-a history these games are famous for their scores and yet we don't know what the scores are do we know how to count here you know what let's just call it an area of opportunity at any rate we know Troy state and de Vries a ton of points this was possible because both teams love to run super up tempo offenses when DeVry went down to Troy for the 92 remants they knew the Trojans were planning on scoring 200 points on they weren't insulted they were fine with it to them it sounded like fun supply brothers got smiles all over their faces how about to tell us from the driver you talking to mom here whenever good track yesterday was you know they they wanted us to get the record you know so we got it meeting those sessions for the glory [Music] this game is not a story that needs to be told in any particular order there's no narrative arc there's no climax or anticlimax there are only a thousand sledgehammers falling out of a thundercloud that isn't a story I have to start somewhere so I'll start with this what you're seeing is a supercut of all the times of all spent in the process of being shot by either the bride or Troy state in other words it was out of the shooters hand and it was either on the way to the rim on the way out or bouncing off we need to speed this up because if I were to show you the entire film at normal speed it would be seven minutes and three seconds long seven minutes out of 40 the ball spent almost twenty percent of this game in the process of being shot moving independently an element of nature free from the Dominion of man and earth on its face this cut is not that interesting to look at and I know that it exists for my own benefit I put it together to prove to myself that this is true that a ball being shot took up 17.6% of a basketball game originally this cut was only six minutes and 15 seconds long but then I realized that I also needed account dunks now for all I long as the player isn't on the ground the ball is technically in the air and shooting mode right that added almost another minute because there were 44 dunks or attempted dunks in this game what that means is that a dunk was midair during about 2% of this game [Applause] Oh I'm Oh [Music] if you score an average of one point eight points per minute you end up with 73 which is a perfectly normal score to have in a college basketball game if you want the highest Division one score of the 21st century you need to almost double your pace by scoring one hundred and forty four points or three points six points for a minute that is unbelievably difficult because basketball is an engine that was not designed to go that fast it's like trying to drive a hundred and forty-four miles per hour in a Honda Civic if you're going that fast you did something to the engine that was the case in 1991 when Troy State hung 180 seven points on DeVry DeVry sort of provided a turbo boost by matching the Trojans high temple offense but in 92 they wanted just a little bit more if they can improve their scoring rate just a tiny bit from four point seven points per minute to five points per minute they could achieve an incomprehensible 200 points but to do that you have to completely burn the conventions of the sport to the ground so let's try it to achieve this pace we need to score five points in one minute so let's run up court and chuck at three as soon as we can five seconds off the board your opponent gets set up to end down the ball from baseline but the clock is still running five more seconds let's hope they play best and use ten seconds of the shot clock before they shoot either you get the rebound or they hit it and you inbound whatever we're 22 seconds you run up and shoot again you miss because nobody's 100 percent 27 seconds they rebound 29 seconds they keep playing fast just like their last trip up the court they hit a bucket sure whatever 39 seconds you win bound 42 seconds you run up quarters fast as you can you hit a two-point bucket congratulations you scored five points and only 47 seconds but you're not done yet you have to have the ball when the next minute starts they walk back and end down at 52 seconds they keep playing fast for some reason and you're ready to end down at 1 minute 2 seconds you're a couple seconds over think you can find a way to shave those off maybe you get the occasional steal or something good that's really good do that 40 times in a row don't mess up even once don't slow down even once and tell the opponent that you're decimating to keep up this is the taste Troy state was trying to achieve they did they spent the first quarter of the game slightly behind schedule this is when they launched into orbit with 837 left in the first half Terry mccord buries at three debris and bounds quickly McCord seals it dumps it off and they have another three six points and eight seconds all of a sudden they were ahead of schedule and they never look back Troy State scored a 100 point was three and a half minutes left in the first half last season a college team had about a two percent chance of putting up a hundred in an entire game with about 11 minutes left in the game Troy state reached 186 equaling the best effort of Loyola Marymount the team that taught him to style play seconds later they beat their own record of 187 to become the highest scoring team in the history of the game there was no one left to compare them to they kept climbing I want to show you the same chart again only this time it squeezed in to normalize the average seventy three point game see here's a nice normal 45-degree angle progression they say that nice is a good counselor tonight let us bring the Greeks some advice Sojin advice written in blood abandoned the land apply so many things happen in this game by my measure of what a thing is a shot rebound turnover or a foul 492 things happen in this game contrast this with a quote-unquote normal game about 25 years later Troy won a game 8277 it was a good game with a lot of excitement and only 254 things happened about half as many but there's also this the 2017 game took about two hours to play the 1992 game whistle the whistle including the halftime break took just 70 minutes 49 seconds so on a second-by-second basis things happened about three times as often watching troy state DeVry is kind of like turning on an exciting game and then playing it at triple speed the shot clock was reset 305 times in this game back then the NCAA use a 45 second shot clock Troy State and DeVry on average use 3.9 seconds of those 305 shot clocks only one ran as long as 10 seconds 80% of them ran 5 seconds or fewer sometimes you'll see this happen in basketball for literally one minute or two minutes but this pace was sustained for 40 minutes from whistle to whistle I have never ever seen anything else like it the areas in black represent all the shot clock that went on used there were only 40 minutes of actual game time of course but the unused time adds up to 209 minutes if they had used each shot clock until it went to zero they would have played more than five times as long as more than four hours including standard commercial breaks and everything else that goes along with the TV broadcast you're probably talking about a 12 hour game [Music] if you're trying for the quickest pace possible turnovers are really nice to have and by my account Troy state finished with 30 steals including four in the 33 second span you're seeing here DeVry isn't exactly throwing this game I mean was that as a horrible idea of course it's a horrible idea but it's also consistent with a bass break offense de Vries trying to run and they scored 141 points so that offense was highly effective this is collusion but it's sneaky collusion that you can't really call out it's really smart but even when there was no chaos with toward state to capitalize on they invented chaos of their own let's look again at that game from 2017 this is a play on cherry pick because it looks to me like a perfectly typical trip of the floor let's count up everything that happens here keyboards Sam board - it's a totally normal possession right and when we add it all up not counting the inbounds pass we've got 24 combined passes and dribble against the right choice Tate had 61 possessions like this one and began with an inbound from their own baseline and ended with a shot and that looked like this on these trips Troy State averaged about two dribbles and one pass on more than a third of them the guy who took the inbound pass shot without passing on almost a third of them the entire team combined for one dribble how do you cover 94 feet with one durable this is a dribble pass shoot dribble dribble shoot dribble shoot dribble shoot dribble shoot throughout this game Troy state was blowing out to dry by historical proportions and yet they played every single second like the shirts were on fire [Music] do you say that train [Music] you will die there please.thank quickly with after that agony find the signs as long as is in 40 minutes of play strictly in terms of up and down distance Troy state in the Vries basketball traveled nearly 24,000 feet about four and a half miles if DeVry had maintained this pace over the course of about one season their ball would have enough mileage on it to make it from Troy Alabama back to their campus in Decatur keep in mind that the 1992 game didn't have commercial timeouts they barely had time outs at all our fouls to break up the action this was almost non-stop if the camera operators knew the ball was going to go back and forth so quickly like this they might have tried to shoot it vertically like they do with tennis matches would have saved them a lot of trouble based on a couple samples I studied an average basketball game as an up and down cruising speed of about 2.3 miles per hour this games up and down average speed was six point seven miles per hour nearly triple that the majority of this game is played about five miles per hour which might have broken the speed limit in the parking lot outside more than a third was played above eight miles per hour and 15% in other words six minutes was played above ten miles per hour and this is how we learn who our heroes are when the Trojans had the ball they moved up court at 7.1 miles per hour which is really fast but what's interesting is that debry was almost as fast despite trailing by 50 75 100 points they never let up they continued to sprint headlong into their certain destruction DeVry has no historical analog there are no ancient frescoes painted with computer-aided design you can't call the gods on toll-free numbers to those of us who grew up watching countless debry commercials sandwiched between episodes and Muppet Babies there's perhaps nothing on earth less romantic than DeVry DeVry was a great choice surpri was a great investment homer never made mention of DeVry at least not as far as I can find but I can tell you this this is from the 1962 film the fury of Achilles when Hector the hero of Troy is dragged away by Achilles his corpse only moved at about 8 feet per second when DeVry had the ball they pushed it forward at a little over 9 feet per second they didn't freeload on some Greek heroes chariot they didn't ask to DeVry played to the point of exhaustion it's even more remarkable when we know that unlike Troy state which had 11 players suited up DeVry only had seven Oh [Music] you might think this game is a meaningless farce which I get you might think I'm a total goofus for thinking it's so important which again I get what I would argue to you is that this transcends American sports you can't judge this by that standard this game is American chin line chin loan is the national sport of Myanmar it's non-competitive there's only one team six people taste around and kick a ball to keep it in the air as long as they can that's it not try to beat some other teams record they're doing it just to do it and pull all kinds of different tricks along the way playing is everything and there is no winning all around my mr people gather around to watch this spectacle and the sweltering heat from 9:00 a.m. to midnight it's art Troy state DeVry is art - as you'd imagine not everyone follow it that way and again that's okay I love normal basketball - with two teams trying to beat each other with solid defense and set plays but we have all the normal basketball we could ever want surely once every 100,000 games or so you can find room for one point with silly juvenile farce just leave us alone with this waste of time leave us alone with this one chance to wander into the unknown we did wander into the unknown [Music] 25 years after this game I reviewed it and I scored it myself not because I doubted anyone but because I wanted to deconstruct the wonders of this game instead I stumbled upon a terrible secret as far as I understand I am the only one to discover it and once I tell you the burden will be yours as well one little problem kind of leads to another problem it's connected to another problem tuna fish potted meat use this toilet if a child is not old enough to help you or understand why it's okay then don't tell them years before the global panic of y2k Troy state the bride should have served as our warning like any other basketball scoreboard the scoreboard and Sartain hall could not count above 199 the hundreds digit only had room 401 not a - after all no basketball team I was able to find before were sent to score 200 points look at the numbers flickering on and off the score was desperately trying to improvise some way of displaying a number over 200 in this miniature y2k the nightmare had actually come to pass electronics failed these people and they had to resort to scoring the game with their bare hands and this is when it all went to hell [Music] the Datsun white represent the actual correct scores of this game this is the final score of Troy state 253 DeVry 141 and this is 200 to 105 the last moment at which I agree with the score shortly thereafter they depart from reality at no point with the score 209 111 it was never 209 113 by this point every single score and now it's on the broadcast is wrong we were experiencing the terror of reading the diaries of the last days of a doomed expedition they were so so far off course they didn't even know it for this study I'm relying on what I have titled the Kip Smithers Phil it's invaluable because apart from a brick at half time it is a single continuous take of the entire basketball game no cutaways to the booth no commercials nothing and because of this we can score it and no we haven't missed a thing it's called the kiss Smithers film because it was uploaded by a YouTube user named Kip Smithers this is clearly a pseudonym in reference to Kip Smithers the alter-ego Will Smith's character and The Fresh Prince of bel-air in other words every record of this game is a lie except for a video furnished by a person with a fake name stolen from a fictional character invented by another fictional character three nested departures from reality this is appropriate we are wandering the streets the absurd if we can't make one right turn three left turns will send us in the same direction I checked this footage and rechecked it and checked it again and again I scored three times on paper I scored another four times in spreadsheets I watched it with trusted associates it's proved extremely valuable guys go back with everyone that there's no wipe and sweat off is for it come on oh no oh my god we found the first down with the first dad during the production of this video in recognition of her landmark discovery Elena was promoted to editor in chief if there again of me to think I know something everyone else doesn't that I can overturn an entire quarter century of basketball history by myself I know this the absolute least I can do is try to understand how they got five more points and I did within this window of the game and I think I know where they got tripped up there are two and only two points when they could have conceivably messed this up the first is right here by my count Troy state leads 206 to 114 [Music] they inbound and horn blows it seems to be accidental but the play is dead the shot clock is frozen DeVry stops playing despite all this when Terry McCord rips off a spectacular 360 dunk I think the score accounted it but the referee doesn't signal anything except the stoppage in play and when play resumes the refs give Troy state the ball again Troy stated really scored they wouldn't have done that this was counted it was a scoring error that would account for to make-believe points my guess is that the other three came from right here near the very end of the game the ball is tucked up for now you but then the footage is too fuzzy to visually confirm whether the ball went to the net but the announcer who I believed to be Mac McCarroll says the ball got wedged between the rim in the backboard the referee seems to call it dead ball then call for an inbound pass for DeVry which is what he would do if the ball got stuck I think it's safe to conclude that there was no score here my concern is that the score looked away saw a guy chuck it from beyond arc saw two Ryan down and assumed it was a three-pointer and I cannot blame them at all I myself had to pause this game and rewind it and watch it a half-dozen times in order to fully understand and record what had happened they didn't get to do that they had to scramble for paper and pencils and record the most fast-paced 40 minutes and a history of sports to even get this close to the real score is an historic achievement on their part [Music] this is the little tower of babel by dutch painter PA toroidal it's a brilliant achievement tower boys will imagine is massive it stands far above the cloud but the painting itself is massive - by virtual Broyles stunning attention to detail you have to squint hard to catch the little people standing on the third deck of the tower and the razor-thin scaffolding up top look at the care taken into painting there's a little galley and look at how easy it would be to miss it completely but then months later Roybal painted it again even larger and more staggering in detail behind its story stretch into the horizon hundreds of people can be seen milling about and living their lives the building itself is blue printed with the eerily steady hand of a mad architect it is almost too much to behold the biblical Tower of Babel was built so high as to defy understanding those who built it began to tell us nonsense the tower could no longer be comprehended it was simply too much of it I hope people understand what they've seen here today well I'll tell you what it was I'm not sure I understand what I saw here today but [Music] [Music] [Music] I'm sure you must have come to realize even in your short life how all men want to interpret their destiny with a simple explanation under our confusion is the incomprehensible master days of the God who pursue their own fancies with men and public as you like then see me as a servant of the avenging fury [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] 7:17 temperature I am using five students about yourself [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] you [Music]
