Trick to remove a rounded spark plug in a deep hole

hi this is adam with small town machine shop with a little different video for you doing a repair job on the truck it's the forward with the triton three valve so you know it's broken spark plugs has happened here is down in that hole is a spark plug that the uh customer has stripped not broke it yet well they broke the tip off it but they have rounded the edges of the spark plug by putting the wrong size on it and then they heard it was good to put a impact on the extension to break these freeze so they don't break well what that did is it completely rounded the plug these plugs take a 9 16 socket and the 9 16 almost doesn't fit on it right now so it doesn't even almost catch it but a 13 millimeter normally on a strict bolt you go down one and you can usually catch it but even a 13 millimeter is too large so i'm going to show you a trick i have learned that will has a pretty good success rate of getting stripped spark plugs out and you can use it for other applications as well so i'll get it set up and i'll bring you back okay so what i'm going to do i got this 13 millimeter socket on there and it's good to keep extra cheap sockets around just for this and it's a 12 point it won't fit over the spark plug let me grab one here grab these ones one hand over here and the right way that won't fit in and it won't fit over the rounded one that's in the engine so i'm going to do is i'm going to take that map gas torch and you can use a cutting torch too i'm going to heat this socket pretty much so it's you don't have to quite get it glowing red but i'm going to get it softer and hot and it'll expand a bit then i'm going to take a copper hammer i'm going to tap it onto the spark plug so kind of you know i'll turn it a bit it'll kind of conform to these threads or the socket will conform to the spark plug and then i'll let it cool and then usually i'd say 90 percent of time i'll be able to screw it out now it's not saying this spark plug is going to break it is a ford three valve so spark plugs are a terrible terrible thing in them so this is kind of like the sum of all fears of the spark plugs not only is the threads damage but i still gotta get the known issues with these spark plugs you know get them out so i will heat this up and tap it on there and i'll bring you back you see it's starting to turn the color there and of course use an extension to put the socket on the spark plug do not touch the socket starting to get some good color on there also be careful that there's no flammable you know oil spills you don't touch the wiring looms or anything with this just drop it right down in there okay so it's up to temperature and drop it down into the spark plug hole get a little twisty and you can kind of feel it go over there let me get a ratchet real quick see if it's got a good bite straightening out just a bit there okay now let that sit for a while that's just the wobble extension in there and see how we did and we got it out that took uh two heat cycles to get it awesome we got the spark plug here three heat cycles sorry see here's what they did to the plug some of that was caused by of course what we just did i don't know where the end of it went but so we got the rounded plug out as you can see why you don't want to do this with a good socket okay you actually kind of see it's taking this was a 12-point socket you can see it's kind of taking on a hexagonal shape there i know you won't be able to see really but yeah the splines are kind of depressed yeah and then another thing this does is the heat transfers from the socket to the spark plug so you get a little bit of heat difference there for breaking stuff loose so yeah very cool very glad i got that out seven more to go this is adam from small town machine shop oh also before this won't work on all engines make sure there's nothing that a really hot socket could damage down there so just keep that in mind yeah this is adam small town machine shop please comment like and subscribe and thanks for watching
