hey everybody before we start this episode i just want to take a second to say first of all if you watch that asmr video thank you you don't need to watch that anymore i have to say thank you to everybody who reached out since starting my new channel i was just overwhelmed i got like hundreds of emails and messages if you sent me a message i didn't reply i'm really sorry there were a lot and it's hard for me to reply to all of them but just know that i'm really grateful a few people recommended that i started a patreon account so i did that so if you'd like to support my work and try to you know help enable me to go make traveling videos like this then i'll put a link in the description of this video if you could go to my patreon i'd be super uh grateful if you did that this video is the longest video that i've ever made but i didn't really know if i could really cut much more out because we did so many cool trees if this video is just like way too long for your interest let me know in the comments maybe i can do like parts or something i don't want to bore you but if you don't have time to watch the whole thing i'll put i'll put time stamps in the description too so you can skip forward to the parts are interesting because we did a bunch of trees in this video and it was a lot of fun so once again thank you so much for reaching out check out my patreon i'd be really appreciative and i hope you enjoy this video [Music] all right everybody we're headed out for our first our first tree adventure i'm just talking to my phone we're off on our first tree adventure so first stop on our world tour uh peter from seattle tree care was kind enough to reach out inviting me to go along with him we're going to go to the san juan islands here in washington state so starting local washington state's really big there's a lot to see and i've actually never really even been to these uh islands before there are a whole bunch of them so we're headed out to one of the san juan islands i'm just waiting on the rest of the crew to show up we're going to load we're going to load the chip truck on this here at barge and we're going to head out for the island life got a couple of my saws ready to go and yeah it should be uh should be a little adventure doing tree work on these islands pretty pretty remote out here in washington state right by the canadian border so we're just about to take off and see what it's like doing tree work on these remote islands and uh i haven't i haven't met the the boys in seattle tree care they should be here in a minute and it should be it should be a pretty cool first stop on our world tour this whole there's a whole world of trees out there that i want to show you that i want to see so yeah let's get right to it yeah this grade was too steep here so we had to add a couple thingies there to make it more gradual he keeps backing that truck up i think he's doing that for weight distribution reasons but i'm not totally sure that's the barge operator dante [Music] so i just met him that is adam and that's dante he didn't even correct he just just backed that truck straight onto the barge that was crazy like very easily back to that trailer up there that's pretty narrow [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] i don't know how to the job sites is going to work here either because we [Music] apparently people just leave cars here and then like when they get here like oh there's my car cars you just sort of grab whatever really how many people live here i don't know how many people live here year round um i know there's a lot of like kind of seasonal type deals wild that's cool you got a screen so you can hook up your chipper yeah um yeah sometimes you gotta go jump on your own and jeremy was like no the dirt road let's see this is like the main road isn't it the dirt bike movie yeah yeah that seems more like what this road is suited for it's oh man i got crazy dude where are we going this is you had eggs back there man you got scrambled though this is starting to feel like a horror movie leaving the trip on the road backing up to the house all right this is our home for the weekend well this is just pretty much the most amazing doug fur i've ever seen and uh what's so unusual about it is it literally it fell over during the windstorm you can see the old decayed top and one of the lower branches turned into an upright stem and it's now this incredible thriving doug fur crazy man this is really i've never seen i've never seen anything like this this is out here so on the island so these trees just get beat up by the wind and they're all stunted and dwarfed and they're all gnarly you'll see trees on the coast are more prone to be like that just because they get hit with such harder winds if they have you know really low taper and they're really tall they're a lot more likely to fall over so you know the trees kind of grow in the way that they so they have the best chance of not falling over and it looks like this thing actually fell over and just kept growing so yeah a typical coast tree it's really crazy you wouldn't see this inland bike furs are really amazing they can look totally different if they're standing by themselves or if they're in a forest or if they're on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean really really cool trees out here our first task they're bringing the chipper in our first task on the island life so we're taking down this fur right here um i don't know there's some project going on here and this thing has to come out and this thing leans crazy crazy hard we thought about felling it but we've got like septic systems and electrical systems and it leans so hard that we're just uh it's probably safest if we just climb it i'm gonna climb up it will speed line the limbs down look at it like overlooks the water and stuff this is so pretty out here on one of these uh san juan islands and yeah it's gorgeous uh peter says this tree is probably a lot older than you think because they just they're just kind of stunted their growth right on right on the ledge of this cliff here so yeah i'm gonna get geared up and start headed up this speed line it down and man that is a narrow spot to put that chipper oh he's got the the dingo i don't know how they got that out of the back of the chip truck how'd you get it out of the truck you know uh we backed it right up to uh kind of a hill we were looking at over there yeah and then two ramps and a little bit of luck nice all right i've got some slings you got okay i'll take those they're all locking so no way cool will you send down for this if you want to know i'm sorry what'd you say i'm just wondering do you want to trail this up or yeah i'll take that now okay yeah thank you all right wow well whenever y'all are ready i got one on that's crazy this thing's like growing over this this cliffhanger yeah okay that should be a little more a little more okay that's good i think that's good okay ready [Music] all right awesome all right i got another one whenever you're ready hmm one this one's pretty small i just leave it slack because i gotta throw it over my head wow dude that holds on like crazy wow rings are tiny [Music] this tree is wild yeah i got one one [Applause] okay i got one on probably good [Music] i'm out of those slings i need a i need all those clips in my rope please wow [Applause] i got one one uh [Music] [Music] oh man hold on see i i usually like to cut all my stubs flush so that that stuff doesn't happen but this is so funky that i left this stub so that i'm probably going to want to stand on it in a minute because this is so awkward but usually i like to just cut everything flush as i go up unless i plan on using whatever i'm not cutting this is really awkward okay uh probably just that's probably good just like that [Music] you know and at first i was gonna leave this but i'm actually gonna cut it because that if i slip this one could actually injure me so i'd like to keep it to stand on but it's not worth the risk i don't know which way this waited probably that way there's a little nerve-wracking though like just looking down right here like there's nothing underneath me i got one on whenever you're ready [Music] all right yeah so see the winch line is directly under me so i'm trying to zipline it but it's like it's just so awkward it's going to be easiest if i just these are small enough now i think i can just chuck them um because the trees like this you can't really teach in a textbook because they're just so funky you know you get up here and it's like kind of gotta throw some stuff out the window like conventional knowledge because it's when they grow so crazy and you're over a cliff it's all i don't know it's crazy those limbs are like twice as heavy as i yeah i can't chuck those okay i'm gonna have to try to i can't check those maybe i can make this work i'm gonna speed line down two more limbs and then i'm just gonna top it i really should have cut that stub okay i can't throw them that far they're super heavy yeah i mean maybe i'm just getting weaker i don't know it's really hard to throw him backwards leaning like this okay headache on the line [Music] i'll just leave the winch line on this thing and i'll top it um yeah let me think for a second though cause if if it's a greater distance to the bottom of the cliff than to here it's gonna tug on that machine how how much winch line is left in there can you like put it in neutral or something so it free spins if that distance is greater than this well if i go down 10 feet it's just gonna fall into that tree right there yeah well it's gonna fall and get stuck in that tree i think if i try doing it any lower i'm just going to end up with it like stuck in that tree i think so okay yeah i can go down more i can take a bigger top yeah just leave the winch line where it is what a gnarly tree [Music] dude they're so different like [Music] yeah that's really nice so you can tie into really small stuff with these old funky trees and it's so the wood's so strong there's been getting battered by the wind for probably a hundred years you know it's like so strong and i do not have a comfortable spot to stand though okay this is so beautiful though up here yeah look up it's so pretty some nice medronas right there this is such a funky tree [Music] here [Music] oh [Music] all right these trees like this are crazy because you know it looks like you're twice as high well i guess actually you are twice as high because you're over a cliff that's cool oh man oh come on it's you know it's kinked in there dang it sucks just gonna have to go fish that out and i'll just have to climb back up all right that's quite the angle okay i'm gonna move my rope to the other side so it doesn't catch this uh piece yeah i was just gonna let that trunk fall that's it's pretty fat [Music] water [Applause] all right ah man rope [Music] my line is so tangled up what the heck how'd i even do this this thing is so knuckley man it just grabs your rope i gotta cut a couple twigs [Music] that was painful but [Music] so [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] yeah the limbs are holding on like crazy up there it's like look at like wow that's amazing beautiful old fur tree so do you want to you want uh to tie how do you want to do this you want to i could drop logs and we could winch the logs up or we just pull the whole thing over but you know this was almost uh it's crazy so i need to tie the dingo off if we're gonna do any kind of heavy dealing or like you know winching yeah and just pull it over i'm just really seeing the shot so yeah so you you got to go back up there but we would um tie this on we'd probably take the carabiner out so yeah impact you know when it hits okay but um and then i just i can't wait to see that face cut like a big open hinge and then yeah i think it'll go fine pull it over yeah i'll go set that back up [Music] [Music] [Music] so yeah that top got stuck in that tree which is kind of lame but it is where it is nature of the beast so i had to climb back up here because we're going to put that winch line on we're going to follow it directly opposite if it's lean yeah and then we'll be pretty much done with this tree i took the carabiner off because i don't want to smash it running bowling uh i'm going to do the same thing with my rope i don't want to smash my carabiner either i've got two ropes here because this is my climbing line and this is a winch line you know i don't want to tie any sort of machinery or do any winching or anything on on my lifeline because you know you're putting an unknown amount of force onto it you know my body weight is like not a lot of force but getting machinery involved you just never really know what you're putting your rope through so i'm gonna use it to repel down but i'm not gonna use it to pull oh yeah i'm tied on i gotta be careful repelling down because if i slip i'm gonna swing like crazy because this thing's at such an acute angle it was weird when i was up there i couldn't even really look at you guys because it's so uncomfortable i have to turn so far because i'm like laying down so i like i i hear like i can like hear tires slipping and stuff but i can't see what's going on well done man nice climbing thanks all right we've got that thing tied off we're gonna fall it just we'll talk real quick about you know falling leaners like this you know you really can do a lot to pull a tree over when you're pulling it exactly opposite of the lean you know it obviously wants to go that way but you can use force to pull it this way what you cannot do what you really cannot do see it leans like this you can't fall over there because if you tie it to a rope once this thing starts to pull what you're doing is you're putting all that sideways torsion on that strip of holding wood and that's just going to break and it's going to go sideways it can be done if you have it guide off to something and have it tensioned but it usually it's best just to try to avoid that practice you know it leans this way you can sort of steer it this way and this way a little bit but you know the oppo like you know 90 degrees perpendicular you just in my experience it's always been better just to not even try it but you know leaning straight out this way you seem to be able to lift it pretty well there are limits of course and that's always i don't know the exact percentage or the exact degrees you know but you know there are limits to how much you can pull this probably wouldn't have probably had enough force to pull that thing over with all that brush on it and you know it was way out there you know it was funky it was crazy so now it's cut back and we're we've got it tied up i'll show you real quick what we got going on over here see we've got this dingo and like we got it rigged up to this tree so that you know so that it has more force so that tree can't pull this dingo if it goes the wrong way and this thing just has this thing isn't going to want to slide forward at all so that was really smart wow that is what is that is that like three quarter inch am steel two inch holy crap that's probably stronger than that tree that's insane yeah that's not going anywhere okay well yes we've got it tied off and we're to put our face cut in the video here you can use that it'd be easier if you use my phone okay maybe one less file to transfer i love those you know you just get those close-ups don't is that what you prefer when you're doing the face cut yeah really getting in there it's kind of the closer the better really flying but this is nice because you can grab right here you probably know this but you can zoom in like that so you can actually get really in there doing that and then this is wide angled so i do a lot of this when i'm filming so i'll be pretty close but dante do you be aware like you know the worst case scenario even though it's got a rope it can go left or right i was just gonna get the face cut and back up is that cool yeah where would be a safe place for dante or yeah um where are you going where am i going yeah i'm probably gonna they say the best way to run is at a 45 degree angle away from your back cut this is kind of like tricky though because it leans the wrong way you know like if it doesn't work so if it's going that way we want to run that way and if it's going that way we want to run that way all right i'm going to talk to the camera do you want it sideways there's a glare on the water right there you could barely see yourself it's probably better oh yeah so with this because it leans so hard that way we're gonna go really shallow we just need a chunk of wood removed basically so that we have a mechanism by which the tree can close you know we don't need to go in very deep at all but what we do need to do is make it as open as possible because if we make a really narrow face cut as soon as it closes this tree is still going to be leaning backwards so we need it as open as possible and i'm going to go pretty shallow i might shave off some bark too just because it's so thick you'll probably grab wedges and stuff a little better if i do that but um yeah i'm just going to put the face cut in i'm going to go as low as possible that's my biggest wood one more [Music] wow wow [Music] okay so we're wide open um you know used our sights we're kind of aimed the right way and how much tension do you got on that peter you know i have a fair bit but uh yeah i was just wondering uh you know yeah maybe tension a little bit now that i got the face out okay that's probably good just hold it there and then i'll i'll just start going really slow on the back and i'll chase it with wedges and then i'll just let you know here and there crazy important you swamp all this stuff out so you don't you're not tripping over oh [Music] oh uh okay hold on one sec so we're just trying to hold the tree in place we're not putting too much force on it yet i'm gonna chase it with wedges now that i'm in sufficiently deeper i'm not gonna hit my bar just trying to hold this in place so i can get my hinge wood cut up enough where he can just yard this thing over i'm gonna cut a little more okay hold on [Music] [Music] okay good hold it okay so how how much are you struggling or do you still have a lot of pull you gotta okay so i'm gonna cut a little more wood and then i'm just gonna get out of the way and then hopefully we'll have cut enough by then that peter can just yard this over [Applause] okay hold on one sec peter can you get out of the way so okay so i'm cut anymore if i cut any more i risk cutting my hinge and then it just falls side to side if i don't cut enough he's going to pull and potentially break the uh the winch line and then this thing's going to jar and if it jars it's definitely going to go backwards so i've got a couple wedges in it i've cut up to probably what i think is 10 holding wood i really can't cut anymore without risking it going sideways on me so all you can do at this point is now we're committed so yeah you ready peter all right so he's going to commit to pulling and yeah go ahead just guard it over and hopefully i've cut enough [Music] it's going like it's standing up and look the face cut has a lot of room to close because it's so wide open if i did a shallow face it'd be closed by now it's almost upright look at the trees just about up right now as soon as it gets upright we're really in the home stretch all right it'll be coming your way in just a minute and look at that totally controlled because that big wide open face cut it's actually leaning the right way now man that wood is so strong that's insane that's just insane it's a old fur really strong that's incredible look at that thing still holding on that worked great oh it's all good it just goes it just goes black after a minute yeah it's all good i'll turn that off look at this that's insane that is just a beautiful beautiful line yeah and you said you made the winch on this thing yeah check it out you turn it off for a second it's really loud yeah so it's super cool uh on a lot of these mini skids you got a couple quick disconnects right here so you can swap between different attachments but this attachment i haven't seen anybody selling it so we fab this up and it's got 250 feet of amp steel line we can go way out pull things uh yeah it's a 15 000 pound winch and uh just a great back saver cool so you so now you so they don't sell just a winch that you can quickly attach that's right so you got to build this mount throw the fairlead on and uh other than that it is pretty simple yeah well that'd be a good that'd be a good invention well nice job making that that's cool that you did that you fabricated that nice job sweet winch thanks man yeah that went great nice job on the camera dante [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] ah [Music] uh [Applause] [Music] wow study so [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah so here you can see you've just got that nice consistent strip of holding wood in the middle so i'm glad i didn't cut anymore if you cut any more you know you risk it going sideways on you if you cut your corners it's just it's just going to go wherever you don't know where it's going to go it's going to go wherever it wants to so i cut up i said you know what i think i'm done there was a sufficient amount of wood and tension to hold the tree in place stepped away and just let the winch do the work it's kind of tricky timing it you know you definitely want to make sure that you've got enough last thing you want to do is snap that winch line you know and so this all worked really well these growth rings are insane they're so dense this is an old tree growth has just stunned it from its location you know i wish you could smell this sap on the camera it's really cool how thick that bark is so yeah that went great and that's how you pull over a leaning tree all right well after doing that last tree now we are back we are staying this place belongs to somebody here there it's like a vacation home they're letting us stay here so we're just getting cozy for the night this is pretty sweet it's pretty wood stove we've all got jeez that's loud we've all got our own rooms it's pretty nice sun's going down so yeah i think we're just going to relax now and get ready we'll have a big day of work tomorrow but man this is just really really beautiful out here [Music] how long have you been doing tree work peter oh man well i'm 42 and i grew up with my dad working for my dad he was a forester with the forest service in the skycomish river district and uh yeah it was the coolest thing we'd go out and cruise timber sales and then we'd also do spotted owl surveys which are one of the neatest things because what you're trying to do is find the spotted owls and so you use a microphone and you uh you call their call out into the forest and then you know they're there if they call back well i'd just like to see how many there are yeah it's a survey and so you're trying to either prove their spotted owls on the property or not that was kind of all after the big uh you know timber shut down i think that was in the yeah kind of like uh the early 90s that was what was going on and uh yeah so not necessarily a lot of tree climbing early on but um just definitely out there working in the woods and just learning a lot of respect for the trees and you know the the forest ecology how it all grows together and it's just amazing yeah that's cool what what's your favorite part about your job oh what's your favorite thing about working with trees that's that's a hard one you know deep down i just love helping customers i just i there's something about you know they they need something done and we can be the people in the company that can help them and there's something that just goes way back that you know cutting the unsafe tree down for somebody who they they can't sleep at night or you know it's it it's not something they can do and we can show up and make short work of it that's probably one of the best things i really like about it and then yeah you can't beat the view that's for sure yeah where would you like to see seattle tree care go in the future or some do you have any what are your goals super exciting you know looking into the future i just i can't say enough good things about the amazing team that i get to work with every day and uh yeah where we're going i just i think we're going to be helping more people with more trees and i can't wait to see it really it's it's pretty cool yeah well this is cool this is cool that you're the guy out here in this like crazy remote island you know they call you out to do this you see you bid that you like drive your boat over here and bid the jobs yeah yeah at least like once a year we'll come up here and scout the work there's a lot of strong winds during the winter here so they get a lot of trees that are either tipping over or compromised in some way and because uh there's a lot of homes in you know steep areas really heavily forested there's just a real need for arborists who can work with the trees and not cause damage to the properties and uh the trees here are just amazing i mean the leaning the drones like that old growth fur we got to work on today and then uh yeah really cool this is just such a cool adventure out here so yeah thanks for bringing me along well thanks for being here man and uh it was really fun working on that treaty together today so yeah cool well we'll look forward to tomorrow [Music] look at this beautiful morning um i crashed my drone i was gonna i was gonna try to get the sunrise i know my drone's in the ocean so that's uh so no more drone footage but it is really pretty so yeah we're just gonna head out and do some more tree work all right so we're back at it we've got this it looks like it's starting to tip over they say it's leaning more and more and more [Music] huge fur it's gotta be 150 is at least 150 foot we're gonna take that down there's a dying cedar over there we're gonna take down and some other leaning and failed and dead trees just kind of going around this island and taking down the hazardous stuff that tree is crazy it's crazy cool and it's a beautiful morning the sun is shining and peter's going to go up it and he says he's gonna top it up there just let like a hundred foot top fly and make habitat snags you know habitat snags are when you leave a stick standing and it'll just kind of decompose and you know the birds and the squirrels can munch on it or do whatever they do and it kind of gives the sort of illusion of having more trees than you do and these conifers when you cut all the green off they just die the sticks you know decompose if it were like a maple or something and you left a snag they might sprout leaves and stuff but it's just a good way of you know leaving you know taking the tree out but leaving something for nature and that the habitat snags are very safe that's the petzl aveo yeah you know uh it doesn't have the rope bridge but i kind of like that central tie-in it used to be even cheaper like bailey's was you know selling them for like 169 and they didn't even change the design but they shot up in price but they're still cheaper than like the really expensive styles oh cool man i think it's got a wicked lean yeah big old fur it's caught a lot of weather over the years you can see you know like the kind of the root uplift the coal oh yeah i'm sure if you came out with on a day of south wind you could probably see it even flexing it's okay with you i might just send down for the saw once i get there oh hey let me turn on your gopro oh yeah sorry all right cool almost need a longer flip line for this guy yeah that's a big tree [Applause] [Music] yeah i'm just looking for a spot try to find a kind of a clear section trunk oh yeah this is going to be good and then yeah i'm just gonna tie in twice it's always a good idea right yeah it'll be interesting there's this big branch kind of nested in that cedar but uh i'll be on the lookout for that thing coming down oh [Music] [Music] all right oh that was awesome that was awesome that was really cool it felt good too you know i was a little worried of that root pull so i tried to cut cut my hinge up so we got the top safely down uh i'm just gonna start carving it in kind of a natural way the saw is not cutting super well so i'm not gonna spend too much time on it but [Music] you know i like the longer bar i'll i'll try cutting it and then uh that was impressive that was an awkward cut to make with that lean and everything that was nice yeah maybe i'm lazy but it was easier than climbing up higher so it's all about efficiency right he has to see now he's going to carve the top of that thing make it look a little more natural i gotta go bucket off the road [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] um [Music] so [Music] then [Music] [Applause] [Music] um [Music] sweet check out these woodpecker holes [Music] it's crazy how deep they can go yeah you see how peter carves those try to make him look jagged like it naturally broke out makes it a lot prettier than just a flat top he's like he's just onto one thing after the other guy's a machine all right we've got this dead dead fur oh man this bark is thick we're just gonna fell it peter really wants me to use the long bar because apparently that's apparently i got a reputation for running the long bars so we got a 42 inch bar and it's gonna be fun we're just gonna we're just gonna drop it right there it's a cool tree [Music] ah [Music] ah [Music] [Music] wow [Music] man this thing is sharp this thing's cutting nice you got a nice nice grind on that peter right on be able to zoom in on that let's see get a shot of that that's a nice square grin that's nice square tooth you just tap the screen yeah yeah that's nice all right [Music] wow [Music] ah [Music] oh [Music] i don't want to cut too much so hopefully hopefully we've cut enough we can just tip it over i might cut a little more wood but at least when i try to get it to stand up a little more before i cut any more wood off trees are so tough here i know but see i i sunk this single taper wedge in and then i went to double stack and i had a single taper and a double taper wedge and they don't stack together that well so i stuck the double taper in pounded that so i could pop out the single taper so i could put these two together to double stack it if you try doing a double taper wedge you know they're a bit fatter and they just don't stack as well so usually i like to start with the double taper short one because that gives you as much lift as you can get with one wedge then i'll start stacking single taper wedges so so i could have saved myself some energy and uh cut a little more wood here but uh you know this is pretty this is pretty thick hinge wood right here and i could have saved myself some energy cutting a little more but it's one of those things where it's like you can't really see the inside of the tree so you know it's always better to leave yourself enough room like if it wasn't going over i knew i could fire up the saw and cut a little more to get to go over um you can't put the wood back after you cut it so yeah that went pretty well oh just got to buck it up what a beautiful location this is crazy you want this stump lower peter you want it flat yeah that'd be great there it goes cool all right coming in towards the end of the second day we've got this fur we're gonna take out right here it's just a good old-fashioned conventional removal it's kind of leaning out over this house so um yeah we're just gonna go up there and take it down in small pieces yeah i like how light it is i like a lot of petzl stuff me too man they make nice products [Music] so [Applause] and this barclays [Music] wow [Music] hey [Applause] oh man [Music] oh man this is awkward so setting a block a pulley and having a ground guy run it from the ground is usually more efficient than running the rope yourself i mean not more efficient but you have more options you know you can more easily lift and control it and everything in this scenario i'm choosing to rig myself because it's a very steep grade and i've only got two guys down there and they're already they're already very busy just dealing with this awkward hill and everything so by running the rope myself i basically get an extra ground guy out of the deal by doing it it's just a little it's just kind of courteous if i run the rope myself in this scenario if i had another guy i might have somebody else on the rope for me or if it were more complicated rigging but this is just lowering stuff straight down you know and it's just kind of lightens the load for everybody if i run the rope in this scenario so i like running it myself sometimes sometimes i let other people run it just depends how many guys i have allocated towards processing the brush you know so look how busy they are they gotta throw it all in the back of the truck we can't get a tripper down here the house is so close speed lining if i cut the branches they'd probably get hung up in that or brush the house or they'd have to stay on that hill that'd be awkward too so it's kind of [Applause] [Music] don't know if i can go on wow rope would that help hey this one is kind of heavy i got it oh you got it yeah that way i can try to fish it over here thanks yeah this is awkward man there are no limbs on the back side to rig off of you want me on hey do you want me to just piece it make a little smaller you know you uh actually uh just plant your next cut will we dante will be able to hook it okay so i got it yeah i think maybe if i hang the rope on this limb it'll be a little better for you yeah it's a gnarly little spot yeah it's awkward like everything wants to lower over the roof and you know this little fur like boy if you hook a branch on it's just it's so tough like yeah how's the view oh i hadn't even looked until wow it's amazing yeah it's really amazing there's a lot of decay up here that is pretty nasty it's pretty nasty up here this would scare me more if this were a tree like in the city but because i know those things get bashed by the wind all the time that decay right there i bet this tree is still strong enough to hold me just because it's used to getting pummeled all the time yeah they're nice when you're lowering maybe if i hang it here maybe this will be better yeah you know lowering yourself usually like if i'm training a new guy i'm usually you know having him set a block and you know somebody's running the rope from the you have more control that way you know if somebody else is running the rigging you got two hands on the saw you got more control so it's definitely safer we're kind of but you know this is just uh sometimes you end up in really tricky situations look at they gotta like chop it all up and throw in the back of the truck it'd be really hard for one guy to handle all this so this is you know you just have to use caution be careful that this this is how you know the old timers do it and it works fine [Music] i think that's probably a little better that branch dude that fur grabs everything man yeah look at that yeah sorry guys i know how awkward that is yeah yeah give it a little gutter protection and i'll pull it away just another foot lower yeah it's a little better of a rigging spot that's about as good as it gets so see i got the rope hung in there because that i'm trying to get in this window if i hung the rope over one of those branches it'd be even more so on the roof [Applause] this is such a narrow drop zone for all these bushy branches dude this wood is crazy yeah nice yeah thank you yeah tree work is a constant balance of trying to be efficient and safe at the same time all sorts of little things like this would be objectively a little safer with a steel carabiner it's not that big of limbs and is you know what we had at the time you know it's like objectively even safer if i had 10 ropes in here it's always a balance of trying to be efficient but also being mindful of what you're doing and trying to be as safe as reasonably possible you know so this one's gonna want to lower uh yeah whatever it's gonna go wherever it goes hey how much rope is on the ground is there a lot on the ground yeah there it is i might just do this it might be easier for it hold on i'm just gonna do something i'm gonna do something that probably so i want them to have make this a little easier what i can do here is i can use one of these these here slings because i want them to be able to get this stuff down very easily you can do alpine butterfly clip it what this will do is this will give them something to grab to help fish it through because now the drop zone is even narrower than that hole so this will give them something to grab gotta make sure your rope is long enough though okay [Music] okay you see that rope read my mind see so now he's pulling he's basically got a tagline and i'm lowering it that actually that actually worked pretty well i'll probably just do that with the rest of them okay that's uh that little trick is a really good way to you know instead of getting a whole other rope which is like far we're in the middle of nowhere so having to go grab another rope or instead of having to have a bunch of ropes to get tangled up that little trick can save you a lot of headaches ah okay can you reach that rope that actually works really well that's great sweet okay i've got this top here wow this is gorgeous it doesn't get any better than this well actually this tree could not have so much rod that would be a little better okay now that i got this little stub what i can do for a little to make this a little better i can wrap this just a bunch of times just add friction that's why i cut this earlier you know and i don't know the like proper way to do this i don't know if there's like a i just wrap it a bunch i i you know it's gonna hold and this kind of frees me up a little bit to position myself over here a little better [Applause] see that was awkward positioning so now i can swing back over here i can slowly start taking wraps off and i'll feel it start to kind of engage once i've relieved enough pressure see starting to go i want to have a little more control so i'll do another wrap i actually want to have a lot of controls i'll do that this one's kind of hot it's kind of heavy i thought gloves like a speed oh it's disgusting look at as this tree decays all the branch collars last longer the inside of the branch because you got the wood grows on the trunk and then it grows on the branch simultaneously and the layers overlap all these knots are lasting so long it's the strongest densest part of the so strong [Music] it doesn't hurt my hands [Music] ah [Applause] [Applause] all right we're brushed out all right i'm gonna drop the rope rope out what's that oh just dropping the rope look how pretty that is adam's over there doing some view clearance for the deck this is just gorgeous yeah so objectively there are things you know that could have been done to do this more safely if i want to be totally safe as possible when all the way the top set of block had a tagline had a rigging line had the guys doing the lowering you know two hands on the saw the whole time we've been using like a steel carabiner and you know maybe this isn't like totally ideal or not like there are all these little things that you know there's always a safer way to do this but if i did everything kind of by textbook this tree would take two or three times as long you know and so i could have done it much more dangerous you know and probably not saved much of any time so it's kind of always a balancing act you know you got to get work done if you wanted to be totally safe if you're really putting safety first and want to be like as safe as humanly possible then you probably wouldn't be climbing trees this is just a dangerous gig so you know always take safety really seriously but you got to get work done at the same time so it's it's a it's a tough balancing act you know wow that's pretty okay let's start bringing this down so this drop sounds horrible i don't have a lot of guys on the ground um to deal with lowering wood it just takes a long time so we're going to leave a habitat snag so i'm just going to cut this in the smallest pieces as i can just chuck it as far as i can so it doesn't hurt or hit the house if i drop anything at the base it's going to roll into the house if i rig the wood off it's going to be just kind of a nightmare we're going to be here forever this tree is not super tall so i don't have to chunk it down that far but it's just going to be a lot of cuts now yeah it'll be tedious but you know it's whatever [Music] sorry i don't think it hurt anything it's just totally dead like jeez i just sliced through it it's so punky that was crazy [Applause] [Music] good does that seem like a good spot that's working really well okay dude it's it's really heavy for the what is so deceptive it's so deceptive okay look i think this will be my uh my last cut with my 200 and then i'll want my uh my screaming eagle okay [Music] [Applause] okay [Music] hmm [Music] wow wow good you know you might notice you know when i'm holding this when i'm cutting through you know you might think like hey that's super dangerous and you know you're right this is all dangerous but you know a lot of times bringing the wood down these are just you're weighing different you know different degrees of danger you know if i rigged this with like blocks and pulleys and everything i'm in danger of hurting the house i'm in danger of hurting the ground guys i'm in danger of hurting myself with the rigging putting a lot of stress on this tree you know so this yeah there's a chance i could cut myself but at least i'm the only thing that can get hurt in this scenario it's probably not going to hurt the house if it hits that the ground guys aren't anywhere near me so they're totally safe i'm able to just work by myself they're doing other items they don't have to deal with that steep hillside and everything so you know yeah this it'd be safer if i had two hands on the saw all the time but also this would fly off if i had two hands on the saw at the end of the cut and you know you just have to wear your options you know maybe you're so ideological that you're like i'm gonna totally do you know everything by the books and so maybe that involves a bunch of rigging and maybe you're putting the ground guys in danger you know because they're underneath you while you're rigging so i like to find ways to do things where i can just kind of be by myself and take everybody out of the equation i'm the only thing that's in danger of being hurt in this scenario and i'm double tied off in case i cut myself i can very quickly get to the ground so just something to think about there are a lot of variables variables at play including your own safety the safety of ground guys the safety of the property and everything here is going really great [Music] uh [Music] [Music] wow [Music] yeah it tapers significantly at this point on you know i mean it really depending on your guys's feelings but our plan is to carve it so it looks like it's gonna break off yeah it's not gonna fall over yeah all the weights out of it it's just gonna it's not going anywhere it's got no weight in the top there's no lever to push it you know but yeah what is the client's gonna just talk to his wife okay how do you make them look so good lots of cutting you might need to gas up and bigger cuts than you think yeah like a big v and then just ragged ragged topping okay like long term it'll slowly decay and maybe kind of crumble a little over time but it's never gonna fall over right right you know have all that weight yeah it's it's it's not gonna fall over yeah the birds will like it yeah jacob that was great oh thank you he was way up there hopefully i can do this as good as these guys do mine usually look like crap throw this in the same spot [Music] good yeah so my finest work so grade a chainsaw carving huh yeah five more minutes it would have looked like a dragon but uh if you want me to stop i'll stop this bark is brutal it's hard it's hard to see yeah it's just like you know my spur has a long way to travel before it hits solid wood it's hard to stand on this we gotta like look for the cracks in the bark to step these trees are so deceptive like i honestly thought that tree was gonna take like two or three hours yeah it's good teamwork makes it go smoother yeah for sure yeah my battery's at one percent so yeah you might think that was really time consuming cutting them six inches at a time but i can see on my gopro on the back of the screen from the time i started putting on my gear to right now hour and 15 minutes so even with all those tiny little cuts it's still actually relatively quick so you know quicker than setting up all the crazy pulleys and rigging and everything yeah worked worked great this one's done all right just a little bit of brush to chip and then i think we're out of here i think we're done for this project [Music] [Music] so so [Music] i was thinking a dante could get in there yeah you drop it yeah yeah that'd be cool yeah i'm gonna move my truck yeah i've actually got one more thing to do before we take off dante's gonna fall this tree that man's a giant he's like six foot eight [Music] um [Music] [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] one [Music] nice shot nice headed down to the ship man this is so beautiful [Applause] [Applause] so [Music] it's a pretty cool pretty cool boat you got yeah what a fun project thanks for bringing me along thank you yeah that was really great climb some trees together learn a little bit about uh technique and trees it's really cool thanks man yeah thanks thank you yeah and i i forgot to ask are you uh you got anything you want to plug are you hiring or anything heck yeah man all the time we're just looking for uh guys or it's positive and would uh love to work with trees how do people get a hold of you you know uh probably uh info at seattletreecare.org is the best way and uh yeah or hit us up on instagram uh dm us there well cool i'll probably stop recording here so it was a pleasure it was pleasure working with you man good work with you yes really good getting to know you guys yeah thanks thanks a ton peter super awesome guilty yeah thanks man yeah it was a real pleasure working with you guys you you really know you guys are really good so thanks man you too hi good good good cutting yeah thanks man i appreciate it so all right cool all right so i'm just driving home now that was kind of a cool way to kick off my world tour i started with the job you know that i'd never worked in the san juan islands before it's the state that i live in but you know washington state is huge there's a lot to see it even the trees that were a lot different like the furs were they were they were smaller but they were also really mature and the wood was denser it was just it was a really interesting really really cool experience you know it was nice of peter to reach out to me but anyways thanks for watching hopefully you like and subscribe that's probably going to be a pretty long video um so if you made it this far thanks thanks for watching i got a lot of really cool footage so yeah it was just a really awesome experience and i hope you have a good day i appreciate your time thanks for watching and we'll see you later
