okay hi everyone Anthony fantano here internet's busiest music nerd I hope you are doing well I'm popping in here to do a bit of an interesting update on something uh one of the bastions on the internet of Music nerdum rateyourmusic.com which if you guys are unaware of and you watch this channel I'm kind of surprised but uh this is a website where uh people kind of collectivize on the internet to rate albums give their opinions on albums write little you know fan reviews so on and so forth and while it's not a perfect site I think it has its issues uh certainly it's toxicity in the comments and the review section here and there more often than not the site is a pretty decent gauge of some good and interesting music dropping every year and uh you know what what counts for some of the best music released in all of popular music history we have had a significant change over here uh happen on the top top albums of all time list which for years and years and years and years and years and years and years it's been topped by radiohead's Okay computer yes radiohead's okay computer has sit at the top of the top albums of all time list uh for a long time really for as long as I've been using the site been aware of the site maybe there have been some shifts that I've been unaware of but radiohead's okay computer has been the record at the top of the top albums of all time chart and I mean while I love the album I personally think it is radiohead's best greatest album of all time I would disagree honestly the only reason I think the album has sat in that position for that long is because of how agreeable it is and how just easy it is for anybody with sort of a somewhat alternative taste to enjoy and listen to and get into don't get me wrong it has highlights and I do think you know it is a Cutting Edge record for its time and it's worthy of much of the praise it receives but uh greatest album of all time I think is a bit of an overreach but results like these are something I think you can expect when you are asking people to log on to the internet and uh collectively all decide via you know an average of scores what's good and what's not uh you are going to get records that uh kind of rise to the top that are not necessarily the boldest but the most agreeable even if you are making that decision among many a music nerd with very strong opinions because while the scores of this album do tend to average high I wonder how many people who are on the site would name this record uh as their favorite album of all time regardless the album has been dethroned it is no longer at number one it has been replaced with a record that is not even 10 years old at this point that would be Kendrick Lamar's two pimp a butterfly would I name tpab as the greatest album of all time I don't know if I would but uh it's certainly a more interesting and ambitious undertaking than uh okay computer and my view and and certainly a bolder Choice overall in terms of uh the themes and Concepts it brings to the table uh the narrative told across the album the various genre fusions on the record and Kendrick Lamar I just find to be a a very bold rapper Lyricist and vocalist overall and in times that I have Revisited this record since I reviewed it originally it has only grown on me more I think plus as the years have drawn on I think the record is really becoming the Undisputed king of uh hip-hop concept albums which is really so well produced so good and multi-layered that it is a threat to concept albums even outside of that genre like would I put this out album up against uh you know a Pink Floyd Animals or a Pink Floyd The Wall yes absolutely I would while I do think this is a very awesome and exciting development over here it leaves me with a lot of questions as to what exactly this means what does this mean for how Kendrick's music over the years is being viewed perceived consumed now that the record is gaining more and more classic status as the years have drawn on uh how are people you know looking at the album as they're going into it how is that painting the view of new listeners as they try the album also consider the very white audience of listeners consuming this album on a regular basis and the themes of racism and um you know self-appreciation and ownership and black power that are expressed throughout the record and what exactly that means for perspectives on those topics uh broadly throughout Society especially really from the view of people who this album wasn't necessarily you know made to appeal to or speak to just audiences of people like me who aren't necessarily meant to uh identify directly with the record as much as I love the record and I think it's uh it's amazing um you know I am uh like with most albums truly and honestly um consuming it as an outsider while there's no one album I can truly put myself in the mindset of because each person is an individual who is dealing with and working through experiences that are uh totally unlike my own there are a lot of problems in systematic injustices that I personally will never have a direct connection to and I wonder you know what that is going to mean uh for people who have not put in the effort to sort of understand what Kendrick is going on about on this record uh when they are you know sort of like hit with the opinions and the views and the passion and the emotions behind this album for the first time while just not really being all that in the know I mean I I can't imagine it would necessarily be a net negative in the long run these days when people are you know listening to or consuming once again an album like uh Pink Floyd's Animals um while that record is beloved and is deserving of all the praise it gets do a lot of new listeners just kind of listen to it or get into it because of its classic status and just appreciate it for its Aesthetics or are they appreciating the political statements made on that record as well one could only hope I suppose one could only hope but yes you know I think that this album uh climbing this high on a chart like this is a fantastic thing seeing this get to number one is a a sign of a good sea change I think one that has been gradually happening for years and years and years and years and years uh but you know I I think a levy has broken here a little bit with this reaching number one and uh you know it's an interesting thing to Fitness so yeah those are my thoughts on that let me know yours if you have any down in the comments you're the best love you over here next to my head is another video that you can check out hit that up or the link to subscribe to the channel Anthony fantano tpab number one forever
