what's going on YouTube while many brands have been afraid to take on the American Rivals when it comes to pickup trucks Toyota has been taking them on head-to-head for years Toyota actually very recently redesigned the tundra and an allnew midsize Tacoma is heading to dealerships very soon the Tacoma is bigger more luxurious and pricier than ever before so it begs the question should you pick it or consider going for the full size Tundra instead that's what this comparison is designed to figure out so let's go ahead and get to [Music] it now obviously this is a sibling rivalry so we did pick the same trims to make it fair with our feature comparison beginning with the allnew Tacoma we opted for the fully loaded version called The Limited it has every luxury feature included so we just added the paint and destination charge to get a total price of $54,600 moving to its Big Brother the tundra limited it actually gets a similar starting price tag the difference though is that the limited is only a midlevel trim for this truck meaning we needed another $6,500 of options to get feature parody with Tacoma all told we're setting at a little over 65 Grand now obviously that creates a bit of a gap between these two models but rest assured we will be circling back to this at the end of the comparison for a value assessment this comparison will be scored objectively and we have done our best to weigh the points awarded throughout in major and minor categories by the way if you want to get the best price from local dealerships and access to invoice pricing info for these two models or any vehicle we have a a tool on our website to do just that check the link in the description for more information but let's get started with the exteriors so jumping in with the outsides of these trucks obviously they will be similar in many ways Twitter definitely went with a baby tundra look for the new Tacoma and it translates to a handsome and tough look on both of them up front the Tacoma has more Chrome but as far as the lighting both trucks have premium full LED lighting that even has sequential turn signals and fog lamps moving to the side both trucks have the crew cab configuration with the Tacoma having a 5T bed and the tundra a 5 1/2t bed even though they proportionately look the same the wheels are 2 in larger on the tundra than the 18in Alloys on the taco rear design wise this is where they look the most similar since they have the same Design Elements the LED tail lights have the same shap shape we have some Chrome accents and then exhaust Outlets that come out on the left hand side and the back is where we will start to move into all the individual features beginning with the tailgates themselves both have dampened opening and new side release buttons in the tail light the interesting thing about going the opposite direction is it's actually the Tacoma that has the fully powered gate that will close itself after you KNE it upright now in terms of bed features both have LED lighting and numerous tie downs and they both have power outlets moving past the beds to the mirrors we have heated mirrors with blind spot monitoring and as far as the other four main active safety features TOA always includes them standard across all trim levels of both trucks finally as you'd expect if Towing is important to you then choosing the full siiz truck will have big advantages the tundra limited can handle about twice the weight of the Tacoma and payload numbers are also going to be higher as well we're of course going to extensively test out the powert trains as well as everything else later in this video but before that if you're new here we're brothers and we've been reviewing cars since we were 12 and 16 we may be young but we love cars and we'd love for you to subscribe to be a part of our car Confections family let's learn a lot have some fun with all the latest cars all righty let's move on to the Interiors but first I do want to mention that both of them have the expected smart entry systems and subscription based remote start now once you open up the doors you will see that the Tacoma's mini Tundra design is certainly present on the inside but there are plenty of differences as well one of which you can see immediately the power running boards a higher-end tundra would be required for that feature as far as the seats are concerned we have 8 in 10 ways of power adjustment since Tundra doesn't have four-way Lumbar and both of them cover their seats in soft teex leatherette until recently it's been rare for a midsize truck to have both Heating and ventilation but both of these trucks do and only the tundra has memory seats let's completely get inside and evaluate the major category of overall materials this xgen Tacoma took a major step up here and now matches its Big Brother both of them have lots of leather red and soft materials where you usually touch although only Tundra PS the center console and only Tacoma pass the faux wood Decor now after start up you'll see that the new Tacoma has switch to digital gauges measuring in at 12.3 in the tundra would require moving up the trim structure to upgrade the gauges and the same goes for the head-up display checking out the steering wheels they have the same Toyota truck wheel which is manually adjusting and heated now the next area to evaluate is interior storage where surprisingly it goes back and forth while Tacoma is great for a midsizer the tundra con is a lot wider front storage and phone chargers are the same and only the Tacoma has a passenger storage shelf moving on to the shifters they are the same traditional ones and once you go into reverse you will see high resolution 360° camera systems with lots of views this is quite helpful when lining up trailers and speaking of trailers these trucks have trailer backup assist and trailer brake controllers both also have dual zone automatic climate controls and now that we're at the volume knobs let's give the audio systems a [Music] sample toyos uplevel audio systems are JBL on all their vehicles and while the tundra does have more speakers they pretty much sound equal additionally Tacoma has a removable and rechargeable speaker that you can take with you on the go now for the main infot tment systems the tundra was way ahead of Tacoma for the last couple years but no more now they both have the huge 14in screens with the newest Toyota software that means Dynamic navigation and Wireless Apple carplay and Android auto are included finally ending the front areas both have Smart camera mirrors but we otherwise have only differences the tundra has exclusive power rear glass where the entire panel opens and closes but it doesn't have any glass on the roof unlike the Tacoma now let's move on to the rear seats in in the back both of them are crew caps but that's obviously not the whole story Tundra delivers over 20% more like room which is certainly better for taller people headro is almost exactly the same and good for people of all sizes for amenities the tundra scores credit for having rear Vents and a fold down sensor armrest but both of them have USB and household power outlets the seats can fold out of the way to reveal hidden in storage but there's still one critical area left to cover and that's the drive so let's take this fight to the streets now when it comes to these two trucks Toyota lost two of the cylinders when they redesigned both of them meaning we now have four and six cylinders in the Tacoma and Tundra respectively in both cases though power increased over the old models and they feel a lot quicker on the street compared to each other the tundra has a pretty sizable horsepower and torque advantage and even though it is bigger it does still translate to faster 0 to 60 times wow nice very nice very nice so that was a little above 60 MPH with this all new tundra so we've got the I force a brand new motor for this vehicle of course that's kind of the big news the V8 is gone you're no longer going to be able to get a V8 in the tundra and instead you're switching to a twin turbo V6 so this is 3 and 1/2 L twin turbo V6 we've got 389 horsepower 379 lb feet of torque so obviously a lot of power it's actually more power than the previous 5.7 L V8 all right so first acceleration with the limited Tacoma this is the I force power train that's going to be the standard power train across all of the trim levels um until we get that hybrid power train that's going to be a little bit later availability we can talk about that in just a second but in terms of this one it's a 2.4 L tur turbocharged 4 cylinder engine 278 horsepower 317 LBT of torque as far as the Transmissions are concerned both have upgraded here as well the Tacoma now has an 8-speed automatic while the tundra has a 10-speed Auto more gears don't necessarily mean better and they both seem to do a great job here one advantage though is that the Tacoma still offers a six-speed manual transmission on most trims for the those who are interested I like it yeah for sure and let's go and talk about the transmission as well so previously on the last generation you had that six-speed automatic that was a little bit old school now we're fully modernized we've got a 10-speed automatic transmission on board really nice transmission of course you got a lot of Gears to get through um but you know this does a really good job it doesn't seem confused or anything you put your foot down you do get that extra power delivery pretty quickly the other thing that I think is a big Improvement is the 8-speed automatic transmission over the previous sixspeed so much more sure of itself you have the extra gears to make sure the power band is in the best possible spot as you go up hills or whatever you need to do before we get into on-road performance I do want to mention that both these two trucks will perform quite well off-road these aren't the ideal trim selections for that kind of comparison but we do hope to do this again with TRD Pros for those of you who like to get off the beaten path on road both trucks have good manners and we have to commend the Tacoma in particular for adding new adaptive dampers to The Limited trim this helps smooth out a lot of those small vibrations and bounces that the tundra will still have since it can't get adaptive dampers until you get to the Platinum grade otherwise both of them handle the big bumps and potholes with ease um but you know going along with that I also want to talk about your ride quality now that we're just cruising down a highway stretch we do have really good ride quality as you would expect out of a truck um this one is the TRD off-road so we do have these special off-road shocks and it soaks up the bumps really really well let's not wait any longer before talking about one of the things that really defines the drive experience with the limited version specifically and that's the fact that we have adaptive dampers on this model so that allows you to have some variability in the way it rides now we've been taking this drive so far in the normal mode and compared to the other Tacomas we've been driving today I do think it makes a pretty noticeable difference in terms of the ride um as you go over bumps and stuff you're going to notice there's just a lot less vibrations coming into the cabin also compared to the previous generation which we've driven numerous times in The Limited form you still always have that constant vibration that was being transferred into the cabin this really Smooths things out so that only the big stuff kind of penetrates in here at car Confections we measure how quiet all the vehicles are that we test so at 55 mph the Tacoma achieves 57 DB and 54.9 DB for the tundra anything greater than a 1 dbel difference is noticeable to most adults so Tundra wins here we'll go ahead and get a sound level reading going 55 milph official car infection sound level reading coming in at 54.9 DB officially we've settled in at 57 before we started slowing down there so finally when it comes to fuel economy the smaller trucks get better fuel economy by 10% both also have hybrid versions that are already available or will be offered soon before we wrap up we definitely need to revisit the price discrepancy while this is the most expensive limited Tacoma ever the tundra limited still exceeds it by $1,658 to represent that we will award the Tacoma a half Point per $1,000 of difference or 5 and a half points obviously this isn't a perfect adjustment and keep in mind that if money doesn't matter as much to you then feel free to disregard this part so that's the end of this Toyota truck comparison they both have distinct advantage and it was a very tight race before correcting for that price difference with those advantages in mind let's talk about who should be your winner now the tundra should be your winner if you need full-size truck towing capabilities as discussed it has almost double the towing capacity of the Tacoma this is also a good choice for power hungry people because it does have a faster 0 to 60 time and it also has a larger and wider interior now the Tacoma on the flip side should be your choice for a variety of reasons first of all you get more luxury features on The Limited trim level that is the highest version of the Tacoma whereas The Limited trim level in the tundra is not quite the highest version so you're going to get a few extra bougie touches on that you do also spend less money overall it's quite a bit cheaper than the tundra additionally it does have adaptive dampers which improves your ride quality and it is a little bit smaller and more maneuverable so if you're not someone that needs that full-size truck ability you'll probably enjoy driving the Tacoma a little bit more but we want to know your all's thoughts down below
