okay i'm looking at the boat and she's uh wow this thing is huge it's going to take forever to clean oh my god this is so much like next level from zingaro oh my god this thing is freaking cool man my name is james evanson i'm a mechanic a musician and around the world sailor four years ago i'd sold everything and made some interesting life choices i bought a catamaran built a hard top sailed to cuba painted sharks teeth on the front of the cat met a girl lost a rudder build a rudder in a shed lost the other rudder built a rudder on the beach dressed in drag made coffee in a sock dressed in drag again sailed to easter island sank the dinghy sailed to pitcairn sank the dinghy again sailed to french polynesia sank the dinghy one more time got a new dinghy i meant to do that sailed to hawaii shipwrecked in hawaii rode the catamaran down the street at three o'clock in the morning wrote some magazine articles started a kickstarter campaign broke up with the girl flew to curacao and now i'm finally grinding my way back to life on the water and my next adventure what's up everyone so i thought it pertinent to make a custom introduction to this video just for you guys this is a really amazing day let's go through what boat it is and then go through why i made that decision and then why i haven't posted anything and why this is not a live stream so it's a 1993 oyster 485 it is a beautiful boat the inside and out built by oyster in great britain to lloyd's standards it's full fiberglass no core in the hull it's probably one of the better boats built ever in the world um there's you know ammo swan oyster that's pretty much all of them that come to mind there's a couple more that make super super good stout world cruising boats out of fiberglass and this is one of them why did i pick it well two reasons really one i was traumatized by zingaro and i didn't want to get a subpar cat two didn't want to take a loan i think you guys can all agree that now is not a good time to take a 200 000 loan uh one kim's leaving two the new boat is not a cat three i don't know what's going to happen with coronavirus where am i going to be able to go for you know the whole world might implode tomorrow because 2020 has been just insane and the last reason is because i'm gonna go back to the first statement it is a strong boat i want to go some crazy cool places and i don't want to have to worry about dying or flipping the boat or you know hitting something and like ripping a hole in the boat this film is the film i filmed the first day when i got to the boat untouched uncut it is trashed so that was a long intro to tell you what i'm thinking and what was going on but i think it was necessary so without further ado here's the walkthrough of the oyster 485 our new project together i hope you like it what's up guys this is the video that you guys been waiting for for a long long time kimmy and i tried the internet here and a live stream is just not possible so i'm going to make a walkthrough of the oyster 485 and there's a shipping container right in the way so i can't really uh show you a really good picture but let's go check it out [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] okay here we are this is the new boat i'm just going to kind of start from the back and move forward on the top and then we'll go inside okay cue voiceover okay starting from the back this boat is equipped with a sugar scoop transom moving forward on the port and starboard aft deck there's double seating which is super nice no matter what tack you're on definitely putting cushions there there's big half lazarettes two hatches in the aft stateroom and a big center cockpit the gangway looks a little rough but all that you see there is sacrificial i've got new slats downstairs that are made out of beautiful teak and that piece of plywood is only to protect the gel coat on top of the slider there's 10 winches on this boat count them 10 and the two forward outer winches are electric they do all need servicing though the edson wheel steering is in good shape and all of the running rigging bimini dodger and sails are down in the v-berth moving forward we've got tracks for the genoa and stacil antique surrounding everything this is actually the worst part of the boat some of this take is gonna have to be replaced all of the caulking is gonna have to be dealt with the boat is set up as a cutter which means it's got two furling hedzels one stacil and then in front of that the working genoa or jib as these furlers have been sitting for three years they definitely need to be greased but as i've said before i really really like this setup looking aft there's big cleats there's a sail locker in front and you get that beautiful oyster look from the front of the boat one thing about sitting on the hard for three years is everything plastic or rubber is definitely gonna have to be replaced so these lumar track stops are toast luckily they're cheap the blocks attached to those tracks though are absolutely not cheap but overall she looks very comfortable and safe and i'm loving the visibility of the center carpet [Music] okay now that you guys have seen uh an okay version of the deck and exterior of the boat it's hot out here so i'm gonna go inside okay we're in the boat this is it it's got a lot of head room it's got opening windows it's got windows that go all the way around a half of them are shut right now just because it's so hot and so sunny that it is super hot in here um i'm so happy that i have these opening windows i need to get myself a fan but let me take you on a little tour you are looking at me from the gangway i've got the camera like outside of the gangway so you can see here what it would look like if you were coming in what you would see so cue voice over again so please remember during this walkthrough that i am showing the boat exactly how i found it i didn't clean up anything because i wanted you guys to see exactly what i purchased after sitting for three years the galley is trashed but if you can look past the clutter you can see that the joinery work and craftsmanship of this boat is phenomenal the galley is very large and has its own fridge and separate freezer this teak table is for the cockpit and provides a very comfortable seating area for four to six the salon itself seats eight with an additional love seat on the starboard side that you can't see right now because it's covered in crap the real draw of this boat and any oyster is the deck saloon design with the wrap around windows that let an enormous amount of light in on this particular boat the outer two open up and ventilation is fantastic there's seven of these lumar opening ports and all of them need new seals and new acrylic not a horrible job though the last owner was in the middle of refit when he left and there are spare parts everywhere i don't even know what this is the fabric of the saloon is going to need some work maybe replacement maybe covers and the wood you see sitting on there is the top of the battery box all of the interior wood is handmade on this boat and absolutely beautiful [Music] here's a better look at the little love seat on the starboard side which actually turns into a single bed all you have to do is remove this cover and slip your feet inside this space moving forward to the front end of the boat on the right side we have two single bunks which we call pilot berths each with lee cloths [Music] again just full of clutter so you can't get a really good look at it in future versions of oysters they made this into a single on top and a double on bottom or just another full-size bunk moving into the v-berth we see a cacophony of spares this is all the sails running rigging canvas seat covers exterior cushions and extra hatches there's probably 25 000 worth of boat parts in here looks like this seat cover also needs to be replaced this is a ceiling panel that fell down that's going to need new velcro turning left to the port side we have a big bathroom with its own stand-up shower there's a mystery box in here that will open up later who knows what's in that the top of the shower is six foot four and there's plenty of room for the crew to use up the 150 gallons of water the boat holds also interesting to note there's two doors for this head both from the v-berth and the pilot berth allowing some semblance of privacy moving aft again we have a little step up into the salon and you can see the entranceway stairs look fantastic from afar now here's one of my favorite spots the navigation station it's big comfortable and a great place to edit videos right across from the navigation station is the access to the engine room which has three doors that open up and provide full access to the perkins m-90 this perkins was fresh water flushed before put away so it still looks very good and now the coup de gras the off stateroom here we've got a walk around queen bed with a small sitting couch next to it plenty of storage for two people to take their entire apartment put it into a boat and go cruising there's a hanging closet on the right a locker and bedside table just aft of that plenty of locker space on the starboard side an ensuite head and a vanity in front on this boat under this forward vanity we have the generator which obviously needs a valve gasket the generator is not looking too good but according to my notes and receipts it's been rebuilt in 2012. so it should run okay with a little tune-up moving into the head we see a slightly smaller head than the forward compartment but it's got its own shower and plenty of room for two it's a bit odd that they didn't put a stand-up shower in the master stateroom but with beds for seven i kind of understand why it's in the forward end it also would have made into the galley space so i get it i'd much rather have a fridge and freezer than two stand-up showers overall the interior work on this boat is fantastic i'm very impressed every time i look into locker everything's built very very well and i think this will be a great boat for the next chapter okay let's talk about likes dislikes loves dis loves hates what's the opposite of love dis love so first of all the opening windows in the front absolutely love those that is one of the best parts of the boat uh it provides so much ventilation through the boat it makes it feel like it's not a monohull makes it feel like it's a cat but a really really strongly built cat speaking of strongly built i love how everything is built on this boat it just feels so strong everything is big and heavy and solid and i love that uh when i'm out to see i am going to love this i also love the rear cabin the master cabin is so awesome i can do yoga back there have a party do whatever the hell i want and it's comfortable as hell i mean like night and day difference from zing i love how there are so many hand holds and they're all kind of hidden so this is a handhold this is a hand hold this is actually a hand hold too you can you can grab this it really is nice also in the galley there is a bar that you can tie onto you can tie yourself off to and you can tie off a line so you don't fly out of the galley while you're cooking i love love love the navigation station it works perfectly it's really really nice ergonomically and it's perfect it's perfect for an editing suite digging that a lot i think the boat is just a little big for just me but what i want to do in the future is have like four to six people on board at all times in like kind of a revolving crew situation so it'll work really well for that what i don't like about the boat is it needs a lot of work everything rubber needs replaced all the window seals every single seal every single piece of rubber the heat exchanger for the generator is going to have to be taken out and cleaned with muratic acid the engine was flush with fresh water and looks really nice so i think i'm just going to hope that that's good i'll take the injectors out and pour some lubricating oil in the cylinders and then just start her up the water maker is totally done i i'm not sure if that's even going to work anymore we'll see it's going to be hard to get parts for it i have the spectra water maker that i'm going to install the difference is this one runs on the generator and makes like 15 gallons an hour or something like that the spectrum makes six so it would be nice to have two there's a lot of things that are a little bit disappointing like the weims and plath clock is completely broken uh the battery inside it got all nasty also there's a lot of really old electronics on this boat so i'm gonna just rip out all the old stuff that i don't need um there's like phones and stuff i'm not really sure what all that stuff is i'm gonna rip out the microwave and i'm gonna rip out the uh there's a 13 inch tv on this boat so that's gonna go i mean it's cool to be nostalgic but there's actually vcr tapes uh vhs tapes i mean i can't even remember what they're called it's been so long since i used that nomenclature uh but overall wow wow wow this is a freaking cool boat thank you thank you thank you for helping me get this uh this is your boat too and i want to bring some people down so we're gonna do the giveaway for a free week on the boat right now okay there's 309 of you that entered yes for the raffle of winning a week on zingaro i've exported that all into an excel spreadsheet i'm gonna use a random number generator by google generate a number go to the spreadsheet see who won okay let's check it out okay so here's the excel spreadsheet showing all of your stuff um there's 310 here because the first line is an information line so whatever the number is that i get i'm gonna add one two okay here's the random number generator between 1 and 309 but you know what i should do is just do it between 2 and 3 10. how about that 2 and 3 10. that way nobody's like oh man i almost got it okay so there we go we're ready let's go generate 37. let's see who 37 is lucky number 37 scott sheen scott sheen of alabama oh no i'm sorry it looks like california oh it might be alabama i think you're from alabama buddy oh wait a minute i think this is um scott is from great britain i'm gonna have to see where scott's from cool well scott congratulations you are now the proud owner of a week on this boat uh thank you patrons thank you kicksharder thank you everyone that's helped me okay so this concludes the tour thank you for joining me and i will have more information out and look forward to sharing with you the videos of the refit there's a lot to do on the boat and i haven't even written it all down but i know that water was dripping on my head last night so i've got to start re-bedding these windows and getting new gaskets and you know getting all those things so let's do it you
