hey guys welcome back so on the way home found this on the side of the road in a free pile it seems to have compression but there are a few things definitely wrong with it the most obvious one is it's missing this door here probably not a big deal but for safety it would be good to have something there there is oil it looks good and I was going to try to start it but before doing that I took a quick look at the blade and unfortunately there is an issue here so it wasn't readily obvious at first but this little piece of metal right here sticking up is kind of the sign of what's going on here this is a supposed to lock this top cap onto the bottom one and keep everything nicely secured in there but you can see it's kind of twisted out and you know I'm gonna try to straighten that out but I have a feeling that could be something bent or not right down here so let me get you set up and we'll take a closer look at that okay so this is my mower and this is the free one let's see what this one looks like okay so I can tell you it has the same type of connection here for the blade the one big thing I'm noticing here is this blade here is kind of curved which is probably needed to get it to fit properly this blade does not have a curve in it so most likely this is the wrong blade installed which is why this isn't tightening down and locking the way it should so for the purposes of testing I am just going to pull the blade off of here and put it on the free one and try starting it yeah so with the wrong blade on here it was tightened down and actually bent this a little bit so I'm going to try typing this out real quick to get a better fit on this blade all right so I gave this a few good whacks right here with the sledgehammer and now it fits on there real nice so I'm just going to try it again and see if it will lock into place yeah that's gonna work okay what do you think the odds are of this just starting okay so the blade issue probably is not why this thing died as far as I can tell there's no spark the spark plug in here looks brand new so I think that's what someone was troubleshooting and they gave up on it and tossed it to the curb so two things I want to check I did not see any spark this has a switch on it so when you pull that handle it either kill spark or allow spark and this doesn't feel like it's pulling back all the way so I do want to pop this cover off just get a better look at that switch and maybe disconnect it and see if we get spark back okay so this is the Magneto and this is the kill wire which goes somewhere can't really see where it's terminating but it looks like it terminates under the flywheel so I'm just gonna pull this wire off and check for spark again okay even with the kill wire off still no spark so there's two things I noticed that I'm gonna try out here to get spark back first is the magneto is rubbing here on the magnet that potentially could be causing the issue so I'm going to recap it try it again if that doesn't work I'm just going to take this coil off and do an ohms test on it and see what I get okay still no spark so I'm just going to test this for ohms it looks like we have to order a new Magneto so the way you test this is you put it on ohms you put one here where the spark plug goes and the other one on the metal on the body and I don't know the exact reading for this but for Briggs generators it's around four or five thousand ohms so I'm expecting something similar to that [Music] and as you can see there's nothing so this is open circuit magneto is definitely bad yep so how order a new one of these turn you back on when it comes okay so less than 24 hours later and 12 dollars later got this shipped to the house so we got a new magneto let's get that on and see what this thing will do [Music] okay good I don't know if you saw that but we have spark so I'm just gonna put the cooling tin back on you know connect the wire put the spark plug in on the plastics bring it outside and see what it does alright so unfortunately the carburetor is flooding over a little bit so I'm probably have to dig into that carb regardless of what happens now but I'm going to try to start it and at least make sure we got a good engine before taking that karma part [Music] [Music] all right so pretty smoky carb is definitely an issue could be more than just the carb I do see a lot of oil in the exhaust so I want to try running it a little bit longer like that to see if the smoke clears up okay so now we know the the engines good and the carburetor is not very good it would only run if I covered the intake to kind of force more fuel into it so that carburetor needs to be cleaned and to get it off unfortunately it's a little more involved than it really should be this year is pretty easy to get at just the nut and a bolt but there's another one on the back side and in order to get that you really need to puff this off again and get the exhaust out of the way so I'm going to set you up in a stand and get those two things off of there and that will allow me to pull that carb this is just a breather hose and for the fuel line I'm going to distill fuel in here someone's gonna pull that off and put a shutoff valve on there temporarily yeah so you can kind of see these holes here look a little bit clogged up this is the what feeds the main jet it looks like there's a little bit of water in there but otherwise it doesn't look terrible in here all right so that's just about it there is a pilot jet I believe in here that needs to come out and the emotion tube I think can also come out okay and you probably can't see it but there is a hole right there which commonly gets clogged so I'm gonna take a wire and click make sure that that's clear and then the emotion tube should be able to just push right out okay and you can see here this little o-ring it's supposed to be another one right there so I'm guessing it got stuck inside it's hard to tell but I think it's down there so I only work at this a little bit and see if I can get that out all right so I've been able to work that or ring up a little bit I should be able to grab it now get that out of there and that does it so this is ready for a bath the ultrasonic as well as a few of these other parts before I do that though I usually like to run a wire through these levels I mean the ultrasonic that I have is not very powerful so it's best to make sure these holes are clear and then the ultrasonic just cleans it up real nice but clogged holes it doesn't necessarily free them up without a little bit of help yeah and it's hard to tell here but if you shine a light through sideways you should be able to see a little bit of light coming through that hole there and I see absolutely nothing so I think any fuel that it was getting was just through that pilot jet and not through the main jet so what I like to do is just use this wire gauge bit set just kind of work my way up about trying to make the hole bigger I just want to get the really the biggest one that will fit in there which is in this case a 71 let's try a 72 yeah that's too big so 71 is the is the one that fits so I think you can see that now but the light is shining through the hole so that means ed is clear okay I almost forgot there is a little hole I believe right here which is clogged so I'm just going to try to free that up and you can see now it's clear [Music] alright overall I'd say this came out pretty good there is a little rough spot here on the bottom which was due to the water in the bowl no amount of cleaning is gonna get that off but this should be a perfectly viable carburetor at this point I was gonna put it back on and I noticed a couple things which leads me to believe there is a problem down here first off is this governor spring this controls the engine speed and as you can probably tell here it is all stretched out on this side and that's gonna cause the engine to run slow and I'm pretty sure that is a problem with this machine and the reason I say that is because you know as I was cleaning this I did take a look at this set screw and someone sent it way way too far in in fact it's so far and the screws supposed to be hitting the back of that plate instead it's hitting the side of the plate so someone was trying to speed up the engine by using this screw and that's not a good idea because you're setting the minimum speed with this screw and the governor cannot adjust it below that speed and if you adjust the engine to run it you know 3200 or 3600 rpm with this screw it'll never run slower and in fact at times when I started it the other day I thought it was running a little fast and this is probably why you know that throttle plate could not close enough to kind of you know balance out the the engine speed so yeah I'm gonna back this screw all the way out gonna get a new spring put it on and bolt everything back up and see what we get okay so while I'm waiting for the spring I'm going to continue on with this and try to get everything else fixed so I'm just going to start by reassembling the carb okay and I have some new o-rings here so the ones that came out of it don't look terrible but since I have a bag of about 25 of them I will use a new one okay that more or less does it I am going to remove this screw I I don't know if this was the same thread as the original one so the threads might be all the goo burped up but I have this carburetor here which is also it too comes it comes off a bigger engine but you can see here throttle set screw how it's supposed to look so I'm going to take this one off and see if it'll fit in here worst case I'll just take it off and not put anything in but let me at least try to put the correct bolt in there okay so that bolt sorry the screw does fit in there pretty well throttle plate is hanging up though so I want to try loosening this right in the center here and repositioning this plate a little bit okay so it looks like it's working pretty well now there is a line you can kind of see it there on the top and I believe that is supposed to be pointing up which it pretty much is now I did have to use the set screw because without it this would close too tight and kind of get wedged in there so with the set screw it's keeping it from getting too far closed if that makes any sense you know now it basically does closed all the way and it opens and closes just the way it should all right so I'm going to pull this plastic cover off in order to do that you got to turn the mower up on its side and there's two bolts on the deck side holding that on all right I'm actually kind of surprised to not see anything broken under here you know this cable has a lot of slack in it so maybe it's broken internally was not expecting to see this still connected so yep need a new cable unfortunately so glad I took a look now so I'll just order that part too and then when I get that in the spring I can get this thing done but I guess before I do that I want to try putting a drill on this nut and just turning it to see if the wheels actually move you know if the drive system doesn't work there really isn't much point in putting a new cable on yep I'd call that a win still the other thing here when I took off the cover unfortunately that support broke off so now there's only going to be one screw holding it on so I want to get this out of here and just try securing the cover with one screw just to make sure that that's enough okay so I just bolted this cover back on with the one remaining bolt hole I'm sorry stud and it's actually on there pretty good so I don't think it's going to be a problem so I'm going to try running it like that worst case I can always come back and either drill into what's left of that plastic stud or potentially just drill right through and just get a long bolt to kind of tighten that down there but I think this will be fine okay and I also picked up a new door used of course to match the mower in order to get it on you know I cannot get a bolt down through here cuz this Springs in the way so unfortunately I think I got to pull this pin and put this bracket on first and then reinstall the pin so I am wearing some safety glasses this is spring-loaded so I really don't want to get this in my face okay that wasn't too bad [Music] good okay so the parts did come a little bit early so I want to get them installed and go cut the lawn okay and just for comparison you can kind of see the difference here and I did cut off the loop at the end so it was about a quarter inch too long [Music] okay so you can see if cable is too loose so in order to tighten that up you just need to slide this sleeve down until you get the tension that you want that feels pretty good okay so you can see now when I pull the handle you get the spring stretching just a little bit to keep the tension on that belt so that's adjustable you don't want it too loose you get it too tight and you might break something down there so it just barely starts to get tight like within the last inch so that's it all the parts are fixed I'm just gonna put the covers back on and go cut the grass [Music] you all right so not bad I actually think this one starts much easier than my newer Toro and it actually fits under the trampoline the handles a bit lower so overall not a bad machine when there's no load on it it does kind of skip a beat but when you're cutting it runs strong so I think I'm done here I hope this helps someone thanks for watching
