[Music] hey how you doing today welcome to the joy of editing with Dave Colley on today's episode topaz studio - again going through the stylistic filters today we're looking at something really special inside of topaz studio - and that is the digital frame now every fine art image needs a frame and when you're posting images online or on your website or Facebook or whatever sometimes it's nice just to spruce them up and put a frame around them to make them look really nice and showy so today we're delving into the digital frame and it's really cool there's a lot of features to it so let's get started I've been on this little train kick lately so please forgive me for that but I just got done making this image and I'm and I posted it on the Facebook topaz groups and I thought well I'm just gonna use this to put a frame around it and I thought that would be cool so let's start today by going up to add filter and coming down to the stylistic section and clicking on digital frame this is really cool I'm so glad that topaz added this to their arsenal of wonderful cool filters inside of topaz studio - this one's really special and neat and I'll tell you what there's a lot to it it's not that hard to use but there's a lot of sliders in here so let's just take them one at a time of course we always have the opacity slider I don't know why you would need it on this one but it's there you have the blend modes probably not going to use the blend modes I wouldn't think there might be a special occasion where you could use one with the digital frame but I haven't figured that one out yet so don't worry about the blend modes in the opacity for now the presets are really cool so let's click on the presets let's just go through some of these abstract frame and Matt hmm that looks really cool let's just look at a couple of these because there are some good ones in here that you could just use there's a standard black frame around your image which is nice very classy find blue and white it's kind of the one they default with and let's see green frame gray matt cool and small white matt just if you wanted to put a matter of your image that's nice and here's just a white Matt okay in a think the way it's adjusted here looks like a pan oh not working for this image but there it is I'm sure you could readjust it and wood and white no that one's out there all right so let's come up here to digital frame and click this little reset icon right here very cool and by the way this little icon here is if you come up with a frame you like you can save it as a preset by clicking on this and giving it a name and it'll save it out as a preset if you ever want to get rid of a preset you just click right here in the trash can and after you've clicked on the trash can just go to the frame you want to get rid of and just click it for instance if I wanted to get rid of the small wait mat I would just click this and it's gone it's just that simple all right so let's get started here let's take these sliders one at a time and this is all in different sections let me just go through here so you can just get an idea what we're looking at okay so we got frame size so move the slider to the right and as you can see the size of the frame is getting larger move it to the left the frame is getting smaller if you keep moving to the left the frame will just go away all right so that's that one frame Matt ratio that would be the ratio of frame to Matt so you just adjust it do you find the ratio that you like and just slide around and when you get the ratio just leave it there now the image depth let's click this one and slide it to the right okay this one's interesting when I move it to the right you see we get a drop shadow here now when I move it to the left there's a point here watch it turns into a Matt can you see that I'll zoom in there so you can see it now I'm gonna move the image step to the left more see how the Matt is getting looks like a thicker Matt the further you go to the left so when you move it to the whole way to the left you get a real thick looking Matt move it to the right that gets a little thinner once you hit a certain point it turns into a drop shadow I'm pretty clever isn't that that's really neat I actually like the Matt myself so I'm gonna make a matte about that size now the light position you can choose where it's going to be top left let's click this drop down top left and look up here in the corner you see the drop shadow here around the frame itself so let's go that's top left and you hover over these you'll see there's uh top right bottom right and bottom left I usually like top left so I'm just gonna leave it there by the way if you just want the mat and not the frame all you have to do is come here to frame mat ratio and move this the whole way to the left and the mat or the frame goes away and you just have the mat then you could come down here to shadow string see we still have the shadow here which kind of looks kind of weird so just take this shadow strength that's what our next slider to explain but move it to the left and see it just goes away now you have a nice image that looks like it's not just under a mat which looks really cool let's bring our frame back so we're gonna come up here to frame mat ratio and drag our frame back into the scene here all right and okay so now we're going into this section here now you notice here you have two buttons here one called frame and one called mat we're gonna work in the frame first and then we're gonna move to the mat okay so let's start with a frame so the shadows strength again move this to the right and you watch out here in the left hand corner here see the shadow start to come that's that shadow strength now the next slider is the inner edge width so look at this edge right up in here you can actually look anywhere along here but I'm just pointing this area out up here so let's all look up there now what should I move this to the left it kind of looks like a bevel right like the frame has some contour so if I move it the whole way over it goes away and it just looks flat and doesn't look real really realistic so depending how much of a bevel you want just to just adjust this inner edge width for that now the next one is the inner edge strength so let's move that to the right and it just makes that edge darker so you can make it really dark if you like that look or you can make it lighter so I kind of like it light just like that which looks really nice now the next slider is the outer edge width so let's drag that and see what happens okay and look at the outer edge let's look up here in the right-hand corner here and watch when I move that in again it looks like a bit of a bevel I can make it look flat like that or if I want to put a little bevel on it I can just move it to the right and it looks like there's a bit of a bevel on it I think that's the best way to explain it that's what it looks like to me anyway and now the outer edge strength would be how dark that would be okay so you can make that darker or lighter depending which way you adjust this lighter to the Left darker to the right so there's that the outer edge strength all right and then we can come down to the next section this is the fun section here now you have a frame type that you have a texture and a color let's look at color first right now we have a texture on you can see the texture and maybe you know you don't want an image with a nice big rip out of your frame I don't think I would to be honest with you but there's that one right there and that's this texture right here okay so let's take the frame type and click on color we'll get into the textures in a second here so right now we're on color right now we're on a black frame I don't know if you can see that it might be blending in with the background here so let's change that color so all we have to do is come to frame color here give that a click and of course here's our color wheel so we can take this color wheel this little target look make that frame any color you want it you want it really saturated blue you want to real light blue you want it pink you want it yellow you want to read you know whatever you want it's really cool and you can take the little eyedropper here and sample maybe a color from the image let's maybe take some of this color from the tree here and you know you can harmonize the image with your frame which is kind of neat and then you have this slider here which deals with the luminosity of that particular color so you can make the color lighter or you can make that color darker so that's pretty cool once you get a color that you like just click OK and you're good to go all right so that would be the color all right so now let's come up and go to texture frame type texture so let's click on that and when we do we get our little blocks of texture coming back up now we have all these textures that come pre-loaded with taupe studio 2 so let's click on the big orange bokeh yeah you know let's click on some of these that one's pretty cool big sir but you have all these in here and just experiment this is easy to know to your heart's delight you got tons there's brick whatever you want bridgewater you name it they're in here there's tons of these in here carpet view you want your frame made on a carpet I know I do not really but that doesn't mean let's just take a look at this one okay as I show you some of these other sliders here all right let's just do that carpet view but let's come down here and look at some of these other things we have we have invert frame texture no or yes let's click on yes it just inverts it so now it's light so you can invert your textures frame brightness you can make that brightness lighter you can make that brightness softer my little test for myself is to see if I can make this carpet look good it does look ugly like a carpet okay frame contrasts we can make that more contrast II and that's kind of cool like zebra stripes or less contrast see look I'm making it cool because I'm taking that away when I move that contrast all the way to the left see that kind of goes away which is kind of neat or I might just want a little bit of it in there so let's go to frame detail now here's a good one because watch if you take this to the right you can give tons of texture to that frame or move it to the left and totally take that texture out so that's what I was saying like I can make this carpet look okay so I can just pull this off so I can take any one of these textures all right for instance one that may look kind of weird in ridiculous like this one here if I had the frame detail up you might say I hate this but if you take the frame detail and the frame contrast move them to the left even there I can take it back and make it look you know kind of nice and then I could take this frame detail and move it a little bit to the left they still maintain some of the color in there and so I can come up with a nice frame so again as I always say the key is experimentation you might say this is stupid why would I ever use this well play with these sliders that's what they're here for this is your world and you can do with it whatever you remember Bob Ross used to say that it's your world you can do whatever you would like so that's cool you're the master of your universe here so which it's really nice all right and then we have frame saturation so we could take this move it to the right give us tons of saturation move it to the left make it black and white so look the the possibilities here are really endless now let's take the frame saturation wholly to the left and see here where it says extra color strength let's move it to the right okay this is a color that that we can basically colorize our image with so let me take the strength the whole way to the right and then look extra color hue colorize any color that you want isn't that awesome so we had this ugly texture in here but now look we turned it into any color that we want in here now we can take the extra color strength and pull that back give ourselves a nice like like a minty type green or whatever we would like alright so that's pretty cool now we can come up to the frame detail and pull that frame detail back up of course I got the contrast down right so you're not seeing it but even there that's looking kind of interesting I kind of like it so play with it you know it's really wide open for us we can do pretty much whatever we want and get a really nice realistic looking frame out of all these wild and crazy textures let's click on firestorm all right and let me take off the extra color strength let me turn up to the frame saturation and look at that that looks really cool now I can pull that detail way up or I could take that detail way back I could bring the contrast up and look at all the different looks I can get it's really it's mind-blowing to say the least now let's go ahead and reset this tech or this digital frame so I'm gonna come up here to the little icon here and click that and reset the digital frame so we're back to the default frame now let's say I want to make a frame for this image so I'll show you how I would go through it here so I might come in here and say all right what size of frame do I want maybe something like that let's look at my frame matte ratio and I might say maybe somewhere and there it looks pretty good let's play with my image depth okay I want a mat so I'm gonna pull this to the left and get that mat look and let's go to where do I want my light position top left is good I'm gonna leave it there so we got frame this is my frame and now we're going to shadow strength and said I don't really want much of a shadow there or none let's say I do not want a shadow I'm just gonna pull that back to the left all right so now all right did I okay this is the bevel so the inner edge width I wish they were called that bevel that would make sense inner edge strength how light or dark do we want that to look I don't want to look real dark so I'm gonna pull it to the left inner edge width or I'm sorry outer edge width forgive me for that one okay so do I want a little bevel in there yeah maybe something like that outer edge strength I don't want it yeah maybe I do want a little on the dark side make it look a little rounded on the edges all right so let me come down and say do I want a texture let's play with the texture because that's probably the most interesting thing about digital frames the texture I mean the plane frames are nice too but let's just find one let's say like bronze glitter this guy right here which is kind of kind of cool with my drain here so now I could come too let's hit the invert see if that looks good hmm don't think I like the blue so let me go back and say no on the invert so let's adjust the brightness of the frame and I might make it a little on the lighter side frame contrast I want more contrast probably not less contrast get rid of some of that texture in there but I want a little in there and then the detail let's try moving up to the right moving it to the left I'm gonna move it to the left just I just want to see just a little my new trace of it now frame saturation is right here I can move to the right and give us more saturation I kind of like that that's a little bold but I do like it sometimes I feel like I want to be bold so maybe I'm gonna go right around and hear compromise a little bit now I can still here and I wanted to point this out earlier and hit this extra color strength and move this to the right and now I can add a different color on top of that color so I already had that orange side color so now I can come here and play around and blend a couple colors together and find that perfect color this may or may not work but I'm just gonna play with it and see if I like something in here and maybe something around there and then we take that extra color strength pull it back now pull it up a little bit and just get the right amount and I'm gonna think right there but let me take my frame brightness I'm thinking it's a little too bright and yeah I might want to darken a little bit and I like that little bit of texture is showing through there now I didn't show you the mat yet so let's come up to the mat you were probably saying Dave when are you gonna show us how that mat works we need to know and I know you need to know and I did forget for a second but I remembered it so let's click on mat so now we're on mat now we're dealing with a mat so we can have a color mat okay right now it's default at a white and look we can change it to any mat color we want it's that so cool or I might want to pick a color in my image so let me get the little eyedropper tool and come into maybe one of these lighter yellowish tan colors right here and look I'm harmonizing my image isn't that awesome I love it I'm gonna say okay so I kind of like that one but I might say you know what I want a texture so let me go to click on texture and let's find let's find a really wild texture and see if we can make it work just as a test prairie filled okay if I can make this work I should get a prize what you think all right so here we go let's go with prairie fill let's see if we can make this work so let's come down here let's adjust the brightness of it we want a light or dark I'm typically into like a lighter matte so I'm gonna make it kind of light like this all right let's take its contrast move it up don't like that move it back I'm just want to show a little bit of that texture in there let me take the matte detail bring that up now I don't like that so I'm just gonna pull that back a little bit and that is was pretty much not much color in that particular mat so let's come down here to well first let's take the mat saturation up and see yeah there's a little bit of yellows and things in there so I'm just gonna take this mat saturation take it off now let's click on extra color alright and see if I can do anything with this being that it's light we might not see much color showing through but we'll see it a little bit and I don't think I want pink and do I want some yellow in there I don't know maybe yeah maybe a little bit to the brown side and let's take the extra strength up the whole way you know let me just take it down let me just see a hint of it in there so that's pretty much it that's pretty much everything I know about the digital frame it is really fun but I really have to say please experiment with it pull those sliders around play with those textures when I first started playing with this I thought these textures are kind of stupid why would why would I ever use this bokeh texture here that makes no sense but once I started understanding what I could do with these sliders then I thought oh this is really awesome and that's why I'm showing you all this stuff so you can understand how this stuff can work for you because a lot of times if companies don't explain this stuff we don't know what to do with it so I I've done a lot of experimenting so that's why I'm able to do this and show you guys so I'm happy to share this with you well I hope you all enjoyed this digital frame tutorial I really had a lot of fun making it it is really cool isn't it sorry it took a little bit of time to get through it but there's a lot to it and I want you to really understand it so you know how to use it and take advantage of it if you like this video today please give it a like and share it with your friends if you're not yet a subscriber please click the subscribe button and also click the bell notification icon this way
