vapareso is a must-see city if you're visiting chile today we're sharing the top 10 things you need to do in valparaiso chile in this travel guide we'll cover the top sites foods and hidden gems you won't want to miss number one on our list of top things to do in valparaiso is to check out the street art chances are if you're going to valparaiso one of the main goals of your trip is to admire the amazing art that lines vapedeso's streets we'll cover the areas of the city with the best murals and art to see later in this video so you can make sure you're wandering the most scenic areas regardless of where you walk one of the best things about being in valparaiso is everywhere you turn there is art i feel like you can spend hours just walking up and down these networks of sprawling streets every time it looks like you're getting close to a dead end it seems like there's another little alleyway that have way way more art to explore in fact you'll have a hard time finding a wall that isn't blanketed with a one-of-a-kind mural which really allows you to feel completely immersed no matter where you are in the city you can be going down some of these just random steps they look like nothing on the surface and then when you turn around and you look up you realize that it was a work of art the whole time so given this is a labyrinth of all these little side streets sometimes it's hard to find the actual pieces of art you want to see so if you want to find these rainbow stairs just look up this one cafe which is on the same alleyway and it'll take you right here the second thing you need to do when visiting valparaiso is to ride one of the city's many historical funiculars valparaiso is home to over 42 hills making it exhausting to see everything in this port city without some help luckily valparaiso has over 20 funiculars of which several are typically in working order at any given time among our favorites we recommend taking the ascensor reyna victoria funicular which takes you to the concepcion hill area being built in 1902 this funicular is over 120 years old making this a slightly thrilling experience they used to fall down a lot on the asian times it was so much that they were falling that they had to do a cemetery there above in the hill oh my gosh not to mention there's a metal slide at the top of the station which is pretty fun to see as well we also recommend taking the essence or el perel funicular ii and as scary as it is riding a 121 year old funicular with peril in its name it's a surprisingly fun and affordable ride this one is located near plaza sotomayor which we'll cover later in this video and costs about 100 chilean pesos for a trip up or down which is just 11 cents when's the last time you had this much fun with 11 cents you may notice typically chileans refer to these as a sensors which literally translates to elevator but technically speaking these are actually funiculars as they climb the mountains at an angle and give it you can't spell funicular without fun going on a ride up these historic hills absolutely must do when in valparaiso the next thing you need to do when visiting valparaiso is to explore cerro alegre sera allegre which literally translates to happy hill is an upbeat and vibrant part of valparaiso this area is home to the iconic street of steps with the we are not hippies mural and the walls of this street are flanked with fantastic works of art as well this is located on the temple men street and is another street in the area with some fantastic murals so the way that some of these paintings come to be is one of two ways basically a person who owns the property can commission a painter to come and paint their walls for them or what will happen is some of these street artists will go around and actually knock on doors of certain shop owners and ask if they can paint the walls for free is free advertising for them so the bottom of each of their murals they usually tag their name sometimes they're instagram so people that are actually looking to commission wall art can find them easily this is a fairly lively spot in the city and given its elevation we'll offer you some nice views of the surrounding area one thing that's so interesting about this area in valparaiso as a whole is that the buildings that are canvases for these art installations are actually incredibly unique themselves valparaiso was a booming port city hundreds of years ago and attracted merchants from all over the world and the architecture around cerro allegre tells their stories one of the cool things about valparaiso is all the buildings here have so much history they're hundreds but hundreds of years old and when this is a key port town one of the cool things was all the different cultures brought their architectural style so some of these buildings are very portuguese some look very german french you can really tell almost who lived there and who originally built that building based on those architectural features you see so really really fun to wander and see some of the beautiful old buildings with brand new paint not to mention since this area is on the fault line these houses have been built with unique earthquake proof engineering that has kept them stable for over 100 years behind me it's really cool you can see how actually they built these buildings so that's mud adobe bricks that they stacked up in between wooden joists you can see the ones that diagonally prevent seismic activity because this area is prone to earthquakes this is a couple hundred years old and it's pretty crazy that this mud and those cross beams have supported and prevented displacement shifting to earthquakes for for hundreds of years so i almost feel like it's straight from the movie up the house just dropped right there crazy how everything's built into these hills really quick if this video is helping you out please do us a huge huge huge favor and hit that like button leave us a comment even if it's super short and subscribe to our channel those little actions help our channel out way more than you might realize similarly we'll also have a video walking through step by step how to get to valparaiso from santiago easily and affordably by bus as well as the top things to see in santiago chile so be sure to check those out as well another thing you need to do when visiting valparaiso is to say hi to all the dogs and cats that roam this city streets valparaiso is home to an incredibly loving population of stray dogs and cats which forbes estimates to have over 20 thousand in the city alone and these animals aren't mangy strays most of these cuties are actually being cared for by the local communities you'll see public dog houses lining many of these streets and most of these dogs are well fed and loved by the whole community in fact we noticed several packs of dogs that would follow us around it's such a fun sight to see them playing and running along with these beautiful murals we've got a couple of pups behind us along for the ride yeah we got four of them now they're just following us it's like our own personal i did a ride this is margarita she's the one we started today with walking around she followed us for about half our journey and she's already back we walked by her in the marketplace instantly recognized us to keep following us again we noticed considerably more dogs in the lower part of town and much more cats the higher you climbed in the hills so regardless if you're a cat person or a dog person chances are you'll find a spot with tons of your favorite furry friends cats here are so friendly i might have to take this one home hello be careful we are huge animal lovers ourselves and absolutely fell in love with valparaiso because of the abundance of cute creatures with any animals please use caution and approach at your own risk so if you're like us and see some animals that are as adorable as these guys you won't be able to help yourself from petting and loving them next on our list of top things to do in valparaiso is to visit concepcion hill this area of valparaiso is accessible by the essenzo reyna victoria which we mentioned earlier in this video and is a neighborhood that's known for its vibrant street art this might be one of the most fun areas to wander in the city as there really is something beautiful around every corner you'll have great views overlooking the city as well as fantastic murals to explore as you wander these curvy streets one of the cool things we learned is so the famous beethoven piano steps was actually made as a monument to the guys whose house was next door to the steps his name was beethoven and then when he died they actually painted the steps in honor of him i don't think he was actually a musician the name just lended itself really well to cool artwork so that's kind of the story behind those cool steps this is a really enjoyable area to get lost in as in addition to the art there's some great shops restaurants and cafes to explore as well the consumption hill area is definitely one you won't want to miss valparaiso almost reminds me partly of san francisco i feel like there's all these eclectic up and down streets where it's near vertical but really cool colorful architecture and each street almost has its own character i can totally see yourself getting lost wandering around here the next attraction on our list of top things to do in valparaiso is one of our favorites and a great hidden gem in the city and that is to ride the concrete slide that lines this great stairwell we were looking for the staircase in particular behind us exactly half staircase half slide so we're gonna see if we can watch on down this is actually way more fun than you might realize it had us giggling the whole way down so if you're wearing the right pants and lift your legs up you can get some serious speed coming down this ramp here if you want to find this place it's kind of hard to find a little convoluted going through the alleys if you come over here to crazy papa punch it on your phone it'll take you right here it's an awesome really cool part of the city just be careful since everything around you is made of concrete can be pretty unforgiving if you crash land so use your best judgment before hurling yourself down if you choose to go for a ride and no trip to chile would be complete without trying our next item on the list which is a chilean pisco sour believe it or not the pisco sour is considered the national drink of chile and they are served in just about every alcohol establishment in the country pisco is a unique type of brandy that is made from distilling fermented grapes and given babareza's close proximity to chile's famous wine region vapadezo is the perfect spot to pick one of these up pistol sour oh wow it's really good it's almost like a melted like lollipop and there's actually powdered sugar on the rim i thought it was like a salt base but that's really good i actually haven't had anything like that before we found these pisco sours to be tasty and refreshing so if you are in valparaiso be sure to order one of these while in town next on our list of must-see spots in valparaiso is the plaza sotomayor plaza sotomayor is a grand plaza located near sea level in the heart of the city and believe it or not this part of valparaiso actually used to be underwater in the early days of the city's origin the settlers here actually raised the ground up to make it habitable and you can still see a marker on the ground of where the old sea lion used to be in addition to this early engineering feat plaza sotomayor is home to one of valparaiso's most beautiful buildings the edificio armada de chile being built in the 1830s this blue masterpiece looks almost like an oversized dollhouse and while it was originally intended to be the customs house for the city it is now home to the chilean navy so you can expect to see many military sailors guarding this area as well in addition to the grand architecture plaza sotomayor is one of the largest civic centers in the city which means you'll see grand statues and local markets set up in the square this is a lively area to shop for local art or souvenirs in these independent shops not to mention at the end of the square by the water and the dock you can find many people offering to take you on their boat for a ride of the city we've heard that locals typically charge around two dollars for a 30 minute ride so if you're in valparaiso on a nice day this could be a great outing for you the ninth thing you need to do when visiting vaporezo is to eat some local empanadas you can find empanadas at just about any store that sells food or groceries around the city being cheap and fresh these are fantastic snacks to keep you energized on a day of walking not to mention being so close to the ocean the seafood empanadas will probably be the freshest you can get anywhere we'll link one of our favorite empanada spots in the description below where they stock over 100 kinds of empanadas for you to try so we stopped at delicia express where there's over 100 empanada flavors and we are so excited to try them i kind of forget what we ordered so we're just gonna dive in since arriving in chile we've had several different empanadas and these ones i think have the best shell we've ever had it's almost like a croissant like how flaky it is definitely some oil to it which adds just like a little bit of smoothness to it and the insides i think this one i have right now is goat cheese basil it's kind of like a kill zone but like a thousand times better these are some of the best empanadas i've ever had so good the tenth thing you need to do when visiting valparaiso is to take a walking tour of the city one of the things we quickly learned about valparaiso is with its sprawling labyrinths of streets it's near impossible to see everything signing up for a walking tour of the city is a fun and affordable way to get a local's perspective they can take you to some of the off the beaten path areas and provide you with the history and significance behind some of the city's top landmarks not to mention many of the local dogs have actually memorized the routes and times of these tour guides so expect to have many furry friends waiting to meet you and walk right by your side along the way we use jurassic tours for our walking tour and while free a 10 tip was recommended we were very impressed with this and felt it was absolutely worth the money and lastly as an honorable mention you may want to visit pablo neruda's house while in town which has been turned into a museum honoring the poet napoblo narado's house and unfortunately because it has such a good view not only is up with giant hill it is up this humongous staircase so we're gonna go attempt to climb it so we weren't able to go into pablo norado's house it was under construction actually but we were able to run to him in the park please let us know in the comments below if there are any top attractions we missed in papadeso or if you have any questions we can help answer for you and if you could please consider hitting that like button and subscribe button it's a free and easy way to really help out the channel thank you all so much for watching and we'll see you in the next one [Music] you
