feel the need for it's a big one good [Music] [Music] top gun flew onto the big screen in may of 1986 in the usa and made its way to the uk nearly six months later in late october directed by tony scott and produced on a modest budget for the time of 50 million it would go on to gross over 350 million dollars worldwide making it the most successful film of 1986 thanks in part to the popularity of tom cruise and the music videos that would run continuously on mtv its soundtrack played a large part in the movie's success and worked as a great advertising tool to capture the public's interest despite its success it did not fare well with the critics roger ebert and gene siskel on their show at the movies gave it a mixed review with roger giving it the thumbs down filling the love story was weak the plot was predictable but loved the action sequences gene gave it a thumbs up though agreed with roger but gave it a recommendation anyway because he loved the action barry norman on film 86 for the bbc said the storyline drags its feet painfully on the ground but is quite magnificent in the air praising tony scott's direction he also commented on the weak love story that kelly mcgillis seems far too sensible and grown up to have fallen in love with tom cruise's character the famous film critic pauline kale gave a pretty spot-on review of the movie by saying when kylie mcgillis is off screen the movie is a shiny homo erotic commercial the pilots strut around the locker room towers hanging precariously from their waists it's as if masculinity had been redefined as how a young man looks with his clothes half off and as if narcissism is what being a warrior is all about top gun ended up being a recruitment video for the navy the navy had recruitment booths in some theaters to attract enthusiastic patrons after the film's release the us navy stated that the number of young men who joined wanting to be naval aviators went up by 500 per cent this was also seen as a problem for the critics who felt the film was used as a propaganda tool top gun would have a bunch of video games produced which i will discuss later in the video come 1991 top gun would be heavily spoofed in the comedy hotshot which the executive producer of top gun bill batalato would work on with charlie sheen in the lead which plays on its story and makes fun of all the moments in the film and also spoofs other features to fill out its plot for me hotshots is all about lloyd bridges who steals every scene he is in many of you wondering what's wrong with my pants well they started running short of material right before they got to the knees so they don't give me any [ __ ] after 36 years they finally made a sequel called top gun maverick with tom cruise returning to the role that made him a superstar worldwide he now has to teach a new bunch of pilots the film would get critical acclaim on release and was a massive hit at the box office if you want to know my thoughts on the long-awaited sequel you can find it on my channel in 1983 producer jerry brockheimer was reading an article called top guns in california magazine the article detailed the life of fighter pilots at the naval air station miramar in san diego jerry said he showed co-producer don simpson the article and said this was star wars on earth we gotta make this they had no idea this flight school existed and purchased a right to the article jeffrey katzenberg and michael eisner of paramount pictures liked the idea and katzenberg suggested some writers to expand the article enlisting the help of jim cash and jack epps jr to write the first draft the research methods by epps included attending several declassified top gun classes at miramar and gained experience by being flown in an f-14 upon seeing these pilots in action and seeing how athletic they were he wanted the script to take on the direction of a sports movie brockheimer was adamant about getting the navy involved as he knew they would need the assistance of the us navy to gain access to the fighter jets but the navy would need to approve the script and offer their own input and clear a lot of the legal issues surrounding filming the aircraft the script had cuba at the center of the dogfights but it was moved to international waters and a couple of the more explosive stunts removing a mid-air collision was swapped for a jet wash which took out the engines and causes a flat spin they submitted the script of paramount pictures but they didn't like it and the production was eventually stalled a new management came in a year later or so and asked jerry and don what they were working on they again pitched top gun all the studio wanted to know was to cost jerry suggested 15 million dollars and the heads up paramount said go make it in 1985 the producers approached tony scott to direct top gun having been impressed by the hunger and a commercial he had done for swedish automaker saab in 1983 called nothing on earth comes close featuring a saab 900 turbo racing a saab fighter jet scott thought top gun should be like apocalypse now dark and unforgiving he admitted he didn't quite get the producer's concept for top gun he was not sure if he wanted to make it he finally envisioned what they wanted it had to be a popcorn movie jet fighter pilots with rock and roll music director tony scott said he found inspiration for the visual style of the film in a book of black and white photographs by photographer bruce weber scott was taken by the haircuts and style of weber's models and showed the book to paramount executives to give them an indication of his inspired aesthetic tony said everyone was scared because it was infamous in terms of the gay community weber's work became the look of the movie and of the actors as top gun has such a large cast i'm only going to focus on the actors who have the most screen time we have tom cruise sort of the success of risky business and all the right moves playing as pete mitchell aka maverick tom took a while to commit to the project having just finished working on ridley scott's legend ridley encouraged him to work with his brother tony on top gun jerry brockhammer got tom to ride in an f14 which made him instantly jump on the project tom would be handsomely paid one million dollars for taking the part kelly mcgillis plays charlotte blackwood aka charlie an instructor of top gun and maverick's love interest kelly's character was originally an enlisted member of the navy but changed to a civilian contractor due to the us military's disapproval of fraternisation between officers and enlisted personnel kellya just starred in the witness alongside harrison ford and during the course of filming top gun kenny mcgillis and barry tubb aka wolfman found romance doing filming and according to kilmer stayed together for a while after the production had wrapped val kimmel plays tom kuzanski aka iceman maverick's rival val studied at juilliard acting school with kelly but admitted they hardly ever spoke to each other at the time but became close friends on top gun kilmer originally didn't want to make the film saying the script was silly and disliked the war mongering but tony scott managed to persuade him and val was also under contract with paramount so he didn't really have a choice either way but felt good about the project thanks to tony's vision he took the part and it made him a superstar if you watch his documentary val it shows off a lot of behind the scenes footage of top gun which val captured on set and throughout many of his movies as he documented a lot of his own work anthony edwards plays nick broadshaw aka goose maverick's radar intercept officer and best friend anthony made the leap to the big screen in fast times at richmond high and revenge of the nerds and top gun would boost his career on the big screen and he would later move into tv appearing in er and law and order meg ryan plays carol goose's wife megan already kickstarted her career on tv with the show as the world turns and appeared in amityville 3d after top gun she appeared in inner space when harry met sally and like val her career on the big screen took off in the 90s appearing in a number of romantic comedies tom skerrick plays mike metcalf aka viper a commanding officer and instructor of top gun a veteran of the vietnam war who served with duke mitchell maverick's father some rumors suggested that the producers were thinking of casting christopher reeve in this role as he was a trained pilot but it seemed a sort of an in-joke that superman was training these pilots how to fly around this time critics were commenting that tom looked a lot like christopher and perhaps they chose not to cast him due to their likeness and reeve was probably too young tim robbins plays sam wells aka merlin cougar's radar intercept officer and would later join maverick tim like meg ryan had started his career on tv and he would become a big star on the big screen appearing in what critics called one of the best films ever made the shawshank redemption though the same year of top gun he appeared in the massive turkey how with the duck the legend that is michael ironside plays rick heatherly aka jester a naval aviator and top gun instructor we all know michael he's appeared in classics like scanners total recall and starship troopers and of course one of the worst sequels ever made highlander 2. rick rosovich plays slider iceman's right-hand man it's matt from the terminator he also appeared in streets of fire and later starred in roxanne navy seals and the tv show er and apparently he stinks slider you stink whip hubbly plays hollywood and becomes iceman's wingman during the climax whip would later appear in species executive decision and tv shows such as flipper and last but not least we have james tolkien as stinger a familiar face during the 80s often playing shouty short-tempered characters appearing in the back to the future trilogy and masters of the universe they would commence shooting in late june of 1985 and production wrapped after christmas the navy made several aircraft from the f-14 fighter squadron to vf51s available for the film the studio paid as much as eight thousand dollars per hour the equivalent to around eighteen thousand dollars today for fuel and other operating costs whenever aircraft were flown outside their normal duties tony had wanted to shoot with anamorphic lenses but they were too large to fit inside the cockpits of the fighter jets and also the cameras would fall off their mounts when the fighter jets turned on their sides so they went with super 35 cameras most of the sequences of the aircraft maneuvering over land were shot at the naval air station valiant in nevada using ground mounted cameras air-to-air shots were filmed using a learjet piloted by astrovision inventor and pilot clay lacy future nasa astronaut scott altman piloted f-14 aircraft for many of the film's stunt sequences such as the flipping the bird in the film's well-known opening sequence as well as busting the tower the film is dedicated to pilot arch goal who was hired to do in-flight camera work for the film art was to perform a flat spin the aircraft was observed to spin through its recovery altitude at which time art radioed i have a problem i have a real problem tragically he was unable to recover from the spin and crashed his special biplane in the specific ocean off the southern california coast on september 16th 1985. neither arts body noise aircraft were recovered leaving the official cause of his accident unknown seeing the jets take off from the carrier deck was of normal aircraft operations and the film crew could make requests to do occasional flybys during filming tony scott wanted to film the aircraft landing and taking off backlit by the sun for a particular sequence and requested the ship's commander if they could continue on their previous course and speed he was informed that it would cost around seventy thousand dollars in today's money so the ship could be turned he quickly wrote them a check that would later bounce the cast had to take on a lot of training such as how to operate the console in the cockpit using the ejector seat simulator how to use their oxygen masks and going into water with full flight suits after they finished filming tony scott had a rough cut assembled and had a test screening the feedback was positive but the audience were annoyed that there was no love scene the producers took note and they summoned tom cruise and kelly mcgillis to chicago to film the elevator and the sex scene as they had wrapped filming mods before mcgillis had lost weight and cruz was filming the colour of money so his hair was much longer in those two scenes mcgillis hair was also much darker so they hid her hair under a baseball cap the sex scene was filmed during one day of shooting with limited lighting and was cut together with the song take my breath away which tony and the producers fell in love with and the song would be utilized as the main love theme for the movie with the film story we find hotshot pilot maverick and his co-pilot goose getting promoted to attend top gun at the naval air station in miramar due to their expertise in the sky and showing they can handle pressure in a hostile situation as they begin their training they are introduced to viper who sets out the rules and what the school is about mavic is already known to the other pilots and they see him as a risk and competition they later attend a bar and maverick attempts to chat up a woman and start singing on the karaoke which is difficult to watch it's very embarrassing i always have to fast forward this scene it's total cringe maverick doesn't realize this woman is his flight instructor at top gun while attending training the following day charlotte later becomes interested in maverick upon learning of his inverted maneuver with the mig-28 which disproves u.s intelligence on the enemy's aircraft performance during maverick's first training session he defeats instructor jester through reckless flying and breaks a major rule of engagement immediately followed by a second breaking of the rules flying past the control tower and buzzing it privately jester admits that he admires maverick's skills but does not know if he would trust him as a teammate in combat iceman is fed up with maverick's reckless and dangerous methods making him unsafe to fly with in class charlie also objects to maverick's aggressive tactics but privately admits to him that she admires his flying and admitted it from her reports to hide her feelings for him the two start a relationship oh la la maverick and iceman's training continues and their competitive nature is getting more obvious as he tries to maintain a higher total score than mavericks maverick pressures iceman to break off his engagement with the a4 in their next bout of training so he can shoot it down himself but mavericks f-14 flies through the jet wash of iceman's aircraft knocking at his engines resulting in an unrecoverable flat spin putting his and goose's lives in serious danger [Music] the visual effects for top gun would be handled by usfx who had provided the effects on the right stuff and would later work on the running man director tony scott loved their work on the right stuff and felt they would be perfect for top gun tony would storyboard a number of sequences he needed for them to complete to plug in the holes of aerial sequences they couldn't film with the us navy the fx team had to create believable model shots to match the real aerial photography there was no digital solution they couldn't go with blue screen and motion control as it would result in the travelling mat lines it needed a documentary feel so they built a selection of 22-inch models and made use of model kit sport from hobby shops some were radio controlled hobbyist planes which had to be modified to match the f-14s to capture that documentary style of shooting they couldn't shoot in a studio so they made use of the outdoors to give it real lighting if it got cloudy they erected a blue sky backdrop to avoid stopping the production the team had a tight schedule and budget so they had to shoot quickly tony scott only managed to visit the team once while they were filming and said he wanted them to shoot the planes with tight shots and back lit this advice was key as it would help them match the aerial photography by tony's team the us navy would allow the filmmakers to film one missile being fired for real so it was shot for many angles and reused a number of times the fx team had the responsibility of filming additional miniature sequences of the missiles firing from the jets to spice up the action they tried to film tracer bullets firing past the model planes but they couldn't get it to work right so they optically added the tracers over the footage top gun has the benefit of using miniatures and little optical work so it's dated very well many of the shots you don't realize they're using models and that creates a seamless blending of the material the copic sequences make use of rear projection to cut to the actors who obviously weren't flying the planes but it manages to get away with it and sells the illusion to keep you engaged [Music] [Applause] the score at the top gun would be composed by harold faltermeyer hot of the success of fletch and beverly hills cop his modern approach with the use of synthesizers made him a popular choice during the eighties forte meyer started out as an arranger working for giorgio maroda harold went out on his own to compose his own material having previously worked with both jerry brockhamer and don simpson on thief of hearts and beverly hills cop he was sent the script of top gun by brockhammer before filming even begun faltermire only had the building blocks of the theme in his head the producers were desperate to hear it he quickly put together a demo and they loved it it would get fine-tuned later on during the production faltermire knew this film needed a heavy dose of rock and roll and that pushed the direction of the music that would accompany the score howard faltermeier found it tough to get his score to mix with the sound effects as the engine sound from the jets would destroy the music in the mix so a careful blending of layering the music was needed to create a fine balance it would be a difficult road to get the right songs many artists were approached to commit to the movie some felt it would be a flop and others felt the film glorified war they showed the film to a packed theater of musicians and songwriters over 100 cassette tapes containing songs were submitted the producers would pass on a song after five seconds if it didn't work instantly after all the tapes they weren't satisfied so they contacted giorgio moroda moroda composed two songs which the producers didn't like which disappointed him his assistant tom whitlock came to the rescue coming up with the lyrics for danger zone take my breath away lead on me through the fire and radar radio the band toto was originally meant to record danger zone however there was a dispute between the band and the producers aryo speedwagon was also approached to perform the song but the group declined due to not being allowed to contribute any of their own compositions to the soundtrack which opened the door for kenny loggins he saw one sequence that no one had written a song for which was the volleyball scene so he came up with a song playing with the boys that pleased the producers and giorgio moroda kenny would then be asked to perform danger zone the top gun soundtrack hit lp cd and tape in 1986 and became a huge hit and is today one of the most popular soundtracks ever produced there was three music videos accompanying the film's promotion one for danger zone the academy award-winning take my breath away performed by berlin and harold faltermeier's themed top gun with steve stevens come 1999 the album would get remastered and include five more tracks with sitting on the dock of the bay great balls of fire you've lost that loving feeling a dance remix of playing with the boys and an extra track of faltermire's score this album is always on my playlist though i don't listen to most of the tracks it's all about taking my breath away danger zone mighty wings god this song is so good and the top gun anthem with steve stevens amazing guitar work it's a shame that didn't really include much of falter my score though with only one track on the original album hopefully they will remaster it in the future it took forever for his work on beverly hills cop to get a proper release so fingers crossed his work on top gun is just around the corner ocean software would handle the top gun video game that arrived on the c64 spectrum amstrad and atari st in time for the movie the game is a basic combat flight simulator the game is viewed with two vertical split screens one for the player's fighter plane and one for the enemy on each level the player faces off against three enemy fighter jets that appear one at a time you have the option to use a machine gun or missiles but a machine gun is prone to overheating the game received mixed reviews most complained it didn't make it as a jet simulator and not as an arcade game either the majority claimed it was pretty dull all round and the graphics were fairly non-existent but it was a commercial hit selling over half a million copies by 1989 the following year top gun would arrive on the nintendo produced by konami this again would follow a similar premise to the ocean micro home computer versions but had better graphics and was easier to play despite frustrating moments of attempting to land your fighter jet on the carrier which i managed to do on my second attempt so not too hard as some may claim just match the speed and altitude at the bottom it even has an 8-bit rendition of the top gun theme the nes game was a commercial hit as well it was a top selling game in the usa for two weeks by 1989 with sales reaching 2 million copies the reviews fared better than the 8-bit micro versions with critics saying it focused on playability rather than graphical presentation some magazines describe the graphics as little more than a detailed cockpit and fast moving enemies but stated that the game succeeded in playability with its levels though nowadays most gamers tend to ignore this game due to its frustrating elements and uninspired visuals due to the success of the nes game konami followed up with a sequel called second mission in 1990 which would add cut scenes and the graphics would get a new lick of paint and the gameplay would take on more of an arcade feel giving you the ability to spin your jet and with more freedom in the sky to dodge missiles the game was given good reviews for its graphics but the gameplay again didn't really strike a chord with the critics for the pc it would get a game in 1991 called danger zone which again follows the flight simulator theme and received low scores by the gaming critics and finally the game boy would get a game in 1993 called guts and glory which was very similar to the nes game and was slapped with low scores as the gameplay felt tired a top gun license would get reused later on for the newer consoles for the playstation nintendo ds wii and pc but this is years later after the film had come out the problem with all these games when they were released in the late 80s and into the early 90s they were trying to create a believable flight simulation experience on limited hardware the atari st and pc could have done something interesting but the games didn't really work what top gun should have been was in the style of afterburner to capture the action and excitement of the movie if sega got the license and switched the name after burner to top gun it would have been the perfect tie-in when it comes to the movies from the 1980s there are a handful that spring to mind that are the standout ones that represent that decade for example back to the future et ghostbusters rocky and top gun with 80s nostalgia in full swing the past 10 years the imagery of top gun and its music is always used to represent people's love for pop culture which makes its ip really strong still after 35 years or so i saw the film when it hit tv in the early 90s it must have been the itv movie premiere i was only four years old when top gun came out in cinemas once i was like maybe 10 years old top gun was the film many were desperate to watch because the music was always on the radio i recall quite enjoying top gun when i first saw it but being a kid you were more taken in by the visual side of things and i didn't take much notice of the plot i recall my older sister being very upset when goose dies i didn't really return to the movie until my late teens when i got it on laserdisc it's great seeing tom cruise chat about the format with jimmy kimmel from a few years ago the quality of it is great oh picture i mean but yeah that's what i thought too but i'm watching on a crappy television and i'd have to flip the side over in when the first time the movie was done yeah that's exactly what i would i didn't mind doing it to be honest with you i tried to get into top gun over the years grabbing on the later video formats such as dvd the blu-ray and then the 4k disc in the back of my mind i always wanted to give it another go it's not to say i disliked the film but i really struggled to fully invest in it and never had this urge to re-watch it on a frequent basis because the story is not really deep or compelling it's pretty thin once they take to disguise and that's where the entertainment strikes hardest as many critics at the time pointed out they felt the story really dragged and didn't do much once the pilots were on land and it's kind of true it's structurally a bit weird and you could argue a bit messy and seems like a series of sequences loosely strung together this may be true or not but i get the impression that they didn't really know where they were going with it you also have to remember they didn't film a love scene which would be really obvious at the time and shot it later so i get the impression they saved the movie in the edit and worked in the pop songs around it to structure it like an extended music video which seemed to be what brock carmo and simpson were doing with their future films at the time with flash dance being a prime example with many tom cruise films after top gun they did appear to take on familiar plot beats comedian rich hall pointed out these obvious similarities seen a tom cruise film i couldn't figure out the plot in about 18 seconds oh christ he's a cocktail maker he's a pretty good cocktail maker too until he has a crisis of confidence and can't make cocktails anymore he meets a good-looking woman who talks him into being a better cocktail maker a riveting piece of cinema that was then he's a race car driver pretty good race car driver too so he has a crisis of confidence can't raise cars anymore then he meets a good looking woman who talks him into being about a race car driver somebody's starting to see a pattern emerge here data thunder would retain tony scott on tom cruise and that was pointed out for being top gun on wheels all these movies were pushed with big soundtrack deals as well it seemed like the new way to market the film and brockham and simpson were very successful at doing that warner brothers with batman would follow suit along with disney with warren beatty's dick tracy despite my criticism of the story once they take to disguise you have the amazing music from faltermeyer and kenny loggins the opening montage for example of the jets preparing to take off is amazing with these incredible visuals it gets you really excited and it just lifts your spirits once they start training and if you are watching on your tv with its regular speakers or even if you have a sound bar it does not compare to the full surround sound experience which this movie takes full advantage of it is glorious maverick from the offset is shown to be breaking the rules but does care about his fellow pilots so he is willing to take major risks to protect his team and follow the strict rules of his superiors which causes a major concern for iceman and the others so for most of the movie maverick is kind of disliked by his fellow students but does have the respect of the more seasoned pilots maverick's best friend goose becomes the voice of reason as goose has a family and doesn't want to fail with their training at top gun and wants maverick to focus on the rules and play it safe goose is the most likable of the cast of characters funny and charming and isn't out to show off so once he dies the emotional impact does really work also thanks to faltermeier's music that underscores the whole scene with the emotional breakdown of maverick and goose's wife tony scott's visual style really helps keep you engaged when the plot isn't really doing its job the film does look breathtaking throughout like his brother ridley their experiencing commercials made them both strong visualists so it does end up looking like an expensive advert for the navy it's full of iconic imagery though tony does like to shoot a lot of it in close-ups making the use of the wide frame a bit redundant if it's all going to be shot in the actors faces so it does end up with everything on land feeling very small and tight and less like they are on a big set or location now over the years top gun has become this gay classic you can find so many articles written about it and its homoerotic undertones and it's very easy to see why the famous volleyball scene the constant looks maverick and iceman give each other and just the overdose of male testosterone is through the roof also everyone is very sweaty in this film it's like there's no air corn at the base so everyone either has their top off or is just dripping buckets of sweat as the camera cuts in for a close-up it is a male dominated movie that only has one woman who is single well of course and gets the affections of maverick for the film to have its romantic angle which doesn't really work due to their lack of chemistry tarantino cleverly analyzed this movie years ago in the film sleep with me saying it's not about a bunch of fighter pilots it's about a story about a man's struggle with his own homosexuality this all stems from the work of bruce weber's photography that influenced the style of the film the volleyball scene is a straight-up interpretation of weber's work also the script is full of obvious innuendos gives me a heart on by the end of vietnam that ratio is back up to 12 to 1. don't tease me when they made this film there wasn't really any sort of big wars taking place for the top gun pilots to take part in this was before the gulf war but the soviet union were up to no good out in the middle east and north korea were being naughty as usual so these two countries could be seen as the enemy who are causing issues so the combat evolves into the enemy invading their territory by air but with this faceless enemy it makes the final battle a bit underwhelming you have a bunch of jets going up against the enemy jets with maverick having a crisis of confidence thanks rich hall but switches around and shoots down three planes with iceman destroying one and the remaining pilot just buggers off that's about it it's an okay sequence and as the extra added suspense of the threat of them being killed but it felt like another one of those training missions so by the third or fourth time seeing this aerial photography it felt all a bit too samey now i don't think people really return to top gun for its story they go back to it for its visuals and music and quotable lines and that is perfectly fine there are many movies that fall into that bracket and you can love it for those reasons due to its lack of optical effects and relying heavily on in-camera photography it's hardly dated in that respect and many of the songs featured are timeless so it's not managed to succumb to that sort of discussion of old movies you remember but barely talk about top gun is still relevant and enjoyed a lot to this day it is a good film and has many enjoyable aspects but it trips up a lot with its story tony scott clearly learned a lot from his experience making this film and i think improved as a director on his next features and became the go-to guy for action and thrillers and worked with jerry brockhammer many times creating a strong partnership top gun was a starting off point for many talented people behind and in front of the camera and it kick-started a new wave of filmmaking and demonstrated the power of marketing and music to sell a movie to a whole generation of moviegoers
