[Music] welcome to ms mojo and today we're counting down our picks for the top 20 moments that made us love timothy chalamet whatever i'm like trying to have a good time but i'm also like am i coming off weird like right now for this list we're looking at the performances and appearances that have made timothy chalamet one of our favorite actors on the scene which moment made you a fan tell us about it in the comments number 20 when he and ansel elgort debated who was the most popular timothy chalamet and ansel elgort are two of the most talented actors of their generation but they have more in common than that both guys are alumni of new york's prestigious fiorello h laguardia high school while on the red carpet for the 2018 golden globes mtv news asked both actors about their school days who was more popular in school timothy timothy was so popular while elgort didn't need to think twice chalamet emphatically did not agree he was just as quick to offer his own argument ansel had a calendar with him in it are you kidding me how could i have possibly been more popular i don't think so elgort continued to say that he wasn't universally beloved while everybody in school liked chalamet however chalamet himself had a uniquely art school barometer to make his final case for guys and dolls auditioned for hairspray these are the musicals we were doing he was the lead i didn't get into them number 19 when he gave a charming acceptance speech nobody seemed more surprised by the success of timothy chalamet than timothy chalamet as he started to rack up nominations and awards for his work he would become a reliable source for sweetly self-deprecating and genuinely humble acceptance speeches all right first up okay please don't be awkward his win for best rising star at the 2017 palm springs international film festival is a perfect example of this chalamet gives glowing shout outs to his fellow nominees his co-star the members of his team and to call me by your name director luca guadagnino and i have often tried to communicate to you how grateful i am for this film and it's difficult for me to put into words but i mean it thank you thank you with all my heart because you are literally making my life right now however his final thank you has a personal touch and speaking directly to his mom chalamet doubles down on his relatability and reminds us that even one of the biggest movie stars in the world is still a pretty normal guy mom i love you thank you for everything and because you texted me about this 20 minutes ago backstage i left the apple tv remote underneath the tv for some reason and i'm sorry about that number 18 when he danced with joe little women after being released in 2019 it was pretty clear that greta gerwig's interpretation of the beloved novel little women was going to become a classic in its own right oh sorry i didn't know anyone was here not at all so stay if you'd like i won't disturb you no i don't know many people here i felt rather strange at first yeah so do i miss march isn't it yes mr lawrence but i'm not miss march i'm only joe and i'm not mr lawrence i'm only lori one of the reasons the movie was so hotly anticipated was that timothy would be playing lori who befriends joe march early in the story joe would you like to dance with me i can't because because of what you won't tell never i scorched my dress see there their relationship is an enviable one and we get to see all the most fun parts of it in this scene where the two outcasts have a dance party of their own outside the more formal party taking place inside we see lori's character clearly from this early scene and it's obvious why he's such a perfect companion for joe number 17 when he fanboyed over emma watson it turns out that dance was as formative for the relationships of the little women cast as it was for their characters as laurie chalamet was in a cast with several extremely well-known actresses and was understandably a little nervous director greta gerwig had a plan to get everyone over that bump though as an ice breaker as a way to you know lose our our masks and our shields of defense of his security greta had us do this dance class in this big room on screen chalamet looked perfectly comfortable taking his partners around the dance floor he revealed to seth meyers though that getting to that point was a process i grew up on harry potter in some way i grew up seeing those movies so that first time seeing him watch this isn't weird for her to see now but uh but that was like definitely a weird moment chalamet had already been nominated for an academy award when he filmed little women he had plenty of his own cred it's sweet to think that he could be so starstruck by finding himself in a room with hermione granger i think you were just splendid really really number 16 when he accepted his independent spirit award on his very first independent spirit nomination chalamet found himself the winner of the best male lead in keeping with the alternative ethos of the event he started off his speech with a quirky non-sequitur gasoline or petrol is a transparent petroleum derived liquid that is used primarily as a fuel and i'm just i'm just kidding i'm just kidding from there he pivoted to a more sincere frame of mind reflecting on the people around him he shared his admiration for independent film and his optimism for its future and again i have faith like the people that are being given the keys i've gotten to know a lot of you now and we're going to do it man we're going to make this change making one last transition chalamet wrapped up the speech with his signature modesty and gratitude no matter where he goes or what he achieves he always gives us the sense that he's just happy to be enjoying the ride this is an amazing thing look at where we are we're in santa monica at an airplane hangar this is amazing number 15 when he had a cornfield chase interstellar we wouldn't be surprised if you didn't remember that timothy chalamet was in the epic 2014 sci-fi movie interstellar whoa get in here let's go what about the flat tire yep he starred alongside matthew mcconaughey playing his teenage son tom with casey affleck playing the grown-up version chalamet doesn't have the biggest of roles here but it is still a significant one considering his character's relation to the protagonist in the scene where coop is racing through a cornfield with his kids timothy has to take the wheel quite literally for a dangerous chase it's an indian air force drone solar cells can power an entire farm luckily he has a good head on his shoulders and knows that sometimes you have to slam on the brakes even if your dad tells you not to yeah don't stop don't stop [Music] [Applause] you told me to keep driving number 14 when he showed us his warrior side dune in his film career so far chalamet has generally been more lover than fighter dune gave him an opportunity to bust out a whole new set of moves put on some muscle i did no as paula tradies his journey in the first film leads him to seek help from the fremen instead he finds himself facing off against jamas in single combat you should welcome my blade this world will kill you quicker this way despite james's dismissive attitude paul instantly proves himself to be a serious opponent lightning quick and laser focused the fight only lasts as long as it does because paul attempts to allow jamas to yield there's no yielding under the until rule only death is the test of it he ultimately does what he must to survive though the taking of a life clearly weighs on him paul knows his bigger fight is not over my road leads into the desert if i can see it if you'll have us we will come and we will follow number 13 when he met lady bird in a parking lot ladybird chalamet has played plenty of likeable parts but his role in 2017's lady bird is not one of them all right sorry i that that was an exaggeration it's okay my dad is cancer so i guess god's doing that for us oh i'm sorry he plays our protagonists love interest for part of the film but it's easy for the audience to see that he's pretentious full of himself and honestly kind of annoying while lady bird tries inexpertly to flirt with him while they're hanging out in a parking lot he spews out conspiracy theories about cell phones and dead pounds about his dad having cancer clearly making lady bird uncomfortable it's my parent's number you know a cell phone nah good girl government didn't have to put tracking devices on us we bought them and put them on ourselves despite the fact that he's meant to be hateable timothy still brings something to this performance that makes us understand why ladybird is so into him it'll be a matter of time but for what before they put him in our brains number 12 when he talked about his dinner with kim and kanye one of the most endearing things about timothy chalamet is how out of place he seems to feel as a celebrity like i feel like i'm in this now a little bit but then i'm like i can't i can't feel like i feel like too much of a fraud or something so one noteworthy example occurred during a birthday dinner for his friend kid cuddy chalamet who points to the musician as one of his personal artistic heroes would have been more than happy to enjoy the meal with him and fellow new yorker pete davidson but then two more unexpected guests arrived kim kardashian and kanye west and then we're hanging out and then it feels like there's an earthquake in the restaurant it was it was it was it was like epic at this point chalamet recounts having a very relatable freak out as a result of all these famous faces he even had to excuse himself for a few minutes you know i went to the bathroom seriously i sent a text to friends like am i worth like does this make sense number 11 when he gave an arthur miller monologue miss stevens the 2016 film miss stevens was released before timothy became the a-lister he is today but it's definitely worth going back and watching if you haven't seen it sam your monologue was really good so far i'm sorry it's christopher durang right i didn't think you knew who christopher guys we were sitting on the side of the road right it was a warning light wasn't it it wasn't the warning the premise of the story is that a high school teacher takes three students to a drama competition chalamet plays billy who is the best actor of the bunch but faces internal struggles in this scene he delivers a show-stopping monologue from death of a salesman you're gonna hear the truth what you are and what i am we never told the truth for 10 minutes in this house the performance is impressive because of how layered it is he has to play an actor who is playing a totally different part suddenly i stopped you hear me in the middle of that office building do you hear this i stopped in the middle of the building and i saw the sky number 10 when he rallied us for england the king you should hurry along then please my lord this is your father he's dying that hook has lost its worm based on william shakespeare's collection of work that is commonly referred to as the henried which focuses on king henry v the king stars chalamet in a role unlike any he had played before he took up the mantle of a dramatic historical piece playing a young ruler in charge of the lives of many in this scene he gives an impassioned speech to his army where he tries to convince them to fight in the name of the english without regard for their lives respective speech i have only one to give and it is the same one i'd give were we not standing on the brim of a battlefield it's just the same one i'd give were we to meet in the street by chumps he does such a good job we would gladly take up a sword after hearing it all men are born to die we know it we carry it with us always if your day be today so be it mine will be tomorrow or mine today and yours tomorrow it matters not number nine when he fell for his crush he may command the screen but that doesn't mean that timothy chalamet is immune to clumsy moments in real life while appearing on the tonight show he told host jimmy fallon about one notable incident at the new york film festival you know this is my hometown i was so happy to be here and there's a q a after the movie it's well received and i'm sitting in the chair for the q a and then a gravitational force comes out of nowhere and knocks me out of the chair and i fall back what happened apparently while rocking back in his chair chalamet lost his balance and toppled over on stage mildly embarrassing sure but wait there's more there's a girl in the audience that night i was super psyched was there and then that happened the story is one everyone can relate to however the real appeal is in chalamet's humorous attitude about the episode besides as he wisely points out dude it's all about the recovery it's all about the recovery number eight when he held his own with steve carell beautiful boy beautiful boy released in 2018 deals with some difficult subject matter all right hey listen i'm gonna give you a call later all right uh i feel like i'm gonna do all right it focuses on a father-son relationship with the lead roles played by steve carell and timothy chalamet chalamet's character is dealing with issues of addiction which of course causes his father plenty of anguish i'm doing great you know just um um just doing what needs to be done what does that mean just being responsible for myself in this scene the two sit in a diner together and nick tells his father he's doing well but needs some money he's entirely unconvincing in his claim that his life is turning around and it's heartbreaking to watch his father realize this i understand why i do things it doesn't make me any different all right i'm attracted to craziness and you're just embarrassed because i was like you know i was like this amazing thing like your special creation or something and you don't like who i am now yeah who are you nick this is me dad here this is who i am number seven when he was just too cool lady bird when lady bird notices kyle sitting outside the cafe she works at she can't help but go and talk to him she tells him how much she loves his band and he responds ever so coolly giving off the vibe of a guy who has girls approaching him all the time i i like your band uh with jonah ruiz len fence new no following uh well i i saw your thanksgiving show my name's lady bird it's weird you shake hands chalamet is clearly playing a caricature of an egocentric teenage boy and the performance is so well done that he is simultaneously convincing and totally hilarious and how perfectly he nails it we guess you could say that his acting job is hella tight i'm friends with jenna and she's always talking about how great your band is so i wanted to check it out yeah gina's hogtie yeah maybe i'll see the deuce or something number six when his alter ego was revealed though he has portrayed a diverse set of personas at this point the one we're most curious about is the one chalamet adopted in high school is this true that whilst you were there you developed a rap persona yes this is true awkward laughter in the audience though he clearly doesn't feel like this is his strongest previous role the actor was good-natured when he was teased by host james corden and fellow guest brian cranston m.c little tv [Applause] he was also candid about his skill level as a rapper saying that he was nowhere close to being like the artists who inspired his attempts still we can't help but want to know more about chalamet's past as little timmy tim he didn't offer up more details in the moment but he was aware that he probably hadn't heard the last of this no way no it's very little timmy too yeah i am never gonna leave this down this is gonna follow me everywhere number five when he shared a first kiss call me by your name i like the way you say things i don't know why you're always putting yourself down though so you won't i guess you really that afraid of what i think 2017 was the year things really began to change for timothy chalamet as he appeared not only in the critically acclaimed lady bird but he also starred in the adaptation of andre asamon's novel call me by her name chalamet plays the young elio who finds himself falling in love with an older scholar who's spending the summer with his family in italy all of his feelings come to a head when he finally makes it very clear to oliver how he feels by engaging him in a passionate kiss number four when he professed his love for joe little women throughout little women lori and joe's relationship progresses and his feelings turn romantic tell me this second has meg perhaps mislead a glove mr brook has it yes how do you know i saw it where in his pocket all this time yeah this isn't a romantic no it's hard i thought you'd be pleased but joe maintains the fact that she doesn't think she wants to marry when laurie confesses his feelings to her and tells her he thinks they should be married she soundly rejects him and breaks his heart no it's no use joe joe we've got to have it out i have loved you ever since i've known you joe i couldn't help it and i tried to show and you wouldn't let me which is fine but i must make you here now and give me an answer because i cannot go on like this any longer it's a difficult scene to watch because as a viewer you can't help but feel for lori as he pours his heart out and is then spurned by the woman he's loved for so long any fan of the book knew this scene would be an emotional one but chalamet's performance brought it to the next level it would be a lie to say i do when i don't i'm so sorry teddy i'm so sorry but i just can't help it i can't love anyone else joe i only love you number three when we saw his rap video chalamet's earlier words to james corden proved to be prophetic when he appeared the next year on the graham norton show and all our dreams came true when we saw little timmy tim himself in his very own rap video the song which was a presentation for his high school statistics class shockingly only earned chalamet a d though by the actor's own admission it may have been the production value that really hurt him i did it with a friend on a green screen in school and i'm pointing to different i was gonna photoshop my teacher's face in but i got too lazy so now they're just kind of weird in the video i'm pointing around and there's there's nothing we can appreciate why chalamet might have preferred this video stay buried deep in the internet but we can't help but love this hilariously awkward piece of his past besides it does get a little stuck in your head number two when he broke our hearts in the best way call me by your name hi how are you i'm good i'm good how are you i'm good you're fine i miss you the final scenes of call me by your name are undeniably devastating for both elio and the audience his summer romance with oliver has come to a close and months later he gets a call letting him know that oliver is actually engaged to be married to a woman might be getting married next spring you never said anything that's wonderful news the film closes with a long shot of chalamet as elio sitting in front of the fireplace and crying as visions of gideon by sufjan stevens plays it's a subtle performance but it's incredibly evocative letting the viewer in on his complex emotions [Music] before we continue you go into your settings and switch on notifications number one when he became bffs with zendaya and we just had so much fun and she brought a great energy and i think we have a similar we can tap into a similar chaos and that's yeah that's important that's important of the many great things to come out of the 2021 dune remake by far one of our favorites is the friendship between timothy chalamet and his co-star zendaya throughout the press tour for the movie we've been treated to several joint interviews showing off the awesome dynamic the pair are clearly comfortable together as they riff effortlessly off one another and are outspoken about being huge admirers of each other's work from a pre-previous interview she said the entire body will work so i'll take that i'll say and he likes you for it i like everything too dune may have been the experience that brought them together but it's clear that it was really just the beginning of a beautiful friendship we hope to see more of these two on and off screen in the future we have many years hopefully if we do more of these movies too really get to know each other yeah good job what a pleasure what a pleasure do you
