[Music] what happens on youtube stays on youtube no it doesn't dummy i repost all your videos on facebook okay well dude it was supposed to be a joke you know like what happens in vegas stays in vegas speaking of which it looks like things really do stay in las vegas considering so many new residents have moved here in recent years in fact the gambling capital of the world was the most searched city for new home buyers in 2020 and over 75 percent of nevadans weren't even born in the state vegas is right here on a map and it's also by far the largest city in nevada with a population of 667 000 and metro population of nearly 2.35 million that continues to grow by nearly two percent each year if you're wondering why so many people want to call this artificial tourist trap in the middle of the desert home well it's because sin city has grown into much more than just a place where you can fall into gambling debt or get married and divorced in the same weekend every year the real city that never sleeps turns into more of a real city an all-around great place to live with some of the best suburbs in the country a world-class food scene gorgeous surrounding nature no state income tax nearly perfect weather with 310 sunny days a year and endless entertainment options including so many festivals shows conventions and new pro sports teams vegas really has something for everyone especially since it's the most affordable western u.s city but like most places it isn't perfect so before you snatch up one of those snazzy new track homes make sure you smash the like button and watch my top 10 reasons not to move to las vegas nevada number 10 it's very suburban las vegas is growing very fast but since it's a city in the middle of a fairly flat desert valley rather than build up vegas did the cheaper thing and built out this of course has resulted in a ton of sprawl with the metro area covering nearly 8 000 square miles and while other cities with sprawl such as los angeles have cool neighborhoods and cute many cities spread throughout nothing about las vegas is aesthetically pleasing other than maybe downtown in the strip the vast majority of the city is a bunch of beige walls strip malls golf courses and gated subdivisions separated by incredibly wide unwalkable streets now the good news is that since vegas is so spread out and non-pedestrian friendly there are enough freeways and main roads that you never run into too much traffic and can get most places within a 20-30 minute drive but considering that las vegas might also be the ugliest city in america with like 98 of the neighborhoods here looking exactly identical those 20 or 30 minutes are gonna feel a lot longer number nine it's a desert buildings aren't the only bland things in las vegas in fact the landscape might even be more bland but what can i say besides for the golf courses whose existence defy all known laws of science greenery just doesn't do well here of course that's to be expected though in the middle of a desert that receives less than four inches of annual rainfall and you know what else you should expect heat sure the weather is pretty decent for eight months out of the year but the summer temperatures can literally kill you no like literally over 100 people die of heat related causes here each year be prepared for temperatures in the triple digits fahrenheit pretty much every day between late may and early october and most days in july and august are over a hundred ten but hey at least mount charleston and lake mead are only a day trip away if you need to cool off and to be fair it is a dry heat so it doesn't feel quite as hot as some places in the deep south or texas but still be prepared to spend a lot of money on chapstick lotion sunscreen humidifiers and of course air conditioning number eight it's isolated if you ever get bored of the city and surrounding nature which trust me you will you can't exactly drive an hour or two to the next city over la is the closest major city and that's a 270 mile or 4 hour drive with no traffic but i've done the drive many times and unless you're leaving at 2 am it could easily take you 6 to 8 hours and don't even get me started on the holiday weekend madness there isn't exactly any jaw-dropping scenery along the way either unless prim baker and barstow are your idea of picturesque and the next closest major cities phoenix san diego and salt lake city are even farther away but keep in mind sin city's roots the mafia wanted a town in the middle of nowhere so they wouldn't have to worry about other cities butting into their business it's just desert desert and more desert until boom the good ol las vegas light pollution number seven tourists okay so yeah vegas is isolated but it obviously isn't isolated enough considering it was the seventh most visited u.s city in 2019 with nearly 43 million visitors making their way to a place that by all logic shouldn't even exist but despite being in a desert with little access to resources thanks to all the tourism revenue this growing metropolis makes it work so it should come as no surprise that the city seems to care more about appealing to the tourists than the actual locals while most locals absolutely hate the tourists and try to live as far away from the strip as possible but can you blame them i mean who wouldn't be annoyed by some drunk slob you picked up through uber barfing in the back of your car and if you're thinking so what if there aren't many locals only activities i'll just party it up on the strip baby keep in mind that those hand billers bachelorette parties and self-proclaimed party animals get old real fast number six it's hard to make friends whether it's because of the tourists how spread out everything is or the giant concrete walls separating each gated subdivision vegas isn't just isolated from other cities the people here are extremely isolated from each other now i'm not saying that they're mean or anything they just really keep to themselves sure vegas's population is very diverse but most of the residents also have one thing in common they never walk drive everywhere and love the suburban lifestyle where they get to spend the majority of their time at their air-conditioned home or job so if you didn't grow up here it'll prove pretty difficult to find an in with the community most residents don't even really do small talk with their neighbors of course this also means dating is extremely hard there just aren't many places to meet locals as most of the areas that do have people walking around like downtown or the strip are mostly tourists and sure dating apps are always an option but since so many singles come here for only a few days most people on them are just looking to hook up number five traffic and construction speaking of those tourists and everyone driving everywhere did i mention that the traffic here can get pretty gnarly especially on the strip in tropicana avenue now thankfully outside of those areas in the interstates during rush hour the traffic as a whole here isn't all that bad and before you locals go off on me and say what are you talking about you're stupid i've been to new york boston nla and the traffic here is by far way way way way worse it's like the worst ever statistically it really isn't in fact the average las vegas commuter spends just 21.6 hours per year stuck in traffic which puts it as only the 52nd most congested u.s city so yeah while the incredibly wide roads aren't the most pleasant on the eyes and definitely not pedestrian friendly they're also what keep a lot of the congestion issues at bay but since so many people are moving to vegas those already wide roads need to be expanded even more as i'm sure you can guess this means las vegas is one of the most traffic-coned u.s cities not that that's like an official statistic but i've driven across this country in every direction multiple times and i've yet to find a city with even close to the amount of road construction in vegas you seriously can't drive on any main road without seeing construction barrels number four the schools suck while state income tax doesn't usually go to schools states with no income tax usually have awful schools nevada and las vegas are no exception although that's also probably because clark county where vegas sits has an extremely low property tax rate of just point six five percent and property taxes usually do most of the school funding the average teacher salary of just fifty four thousand two hundred eighty dollars is one of the lowest in the nation and also probably why there aren't many teachers here and those who do exist are overworked with a student-to-teacher ratio of 25.3 in elementary school and 34.5 in high school it's no wonder average student test scores are 25 below the national average but it's not only the schools vegas as a whole just isn't a great place for kids that shouldn't come as a shock though for a city where like 60 of things to do require you to be 21. number three expensive and rising cost of living okay so las vegas is the cheapest major western u.s city but that isn't really saying much as it's still really expensive and the cost of housing is going up fast if for some reason you weren't aware there's been a wave of californians with their california paychecks moving here and snatching up properties in recent years which means the cost of housing is going up way faster than the local jobs can accommodate the median home value within the metro area rose 8 percent over the past year to 316 000 and renting isn't much better at nearly 1500 bucks a month on average now the positive to vegas being really spread out with so much empty land available is that housing prices haven't risen even more like they have in boise or salt lake city but once they eventually do run out of space for new construction you can bet those prices are gonna skyrocket fast also thanks to being in a vast desert landscape with few natural resources everything from food to gas to internet and utility bills are very expensive as well number two limited job market since vegas is one of the fastest growing cities and tons of people from all over the world with all sorts of backgrounds move here you'd think there'd be a thriving economy and job market but while most other aspects of a big city have come to town a diversified economy has not many of the new residents moving here are able to still work their out-of-state jobs online while the city itself still heavily relies on the tourism and service industries needless to say this created a disparaging wage gap even before the pandemic but vegas's economy might have actually been hit the hardest from all the lockdowns and closures while most of the country has gotten its unemployment rate down to around six percent vegas's is still at 10.5 now to be fair other parts of the economy are growing and there are some good jobs in the startup space as more entrepreneurs and young professionals based new companies here but for now the median household income of 63 250 is still 2 500 less than the national average and not enough to be able to afford most homes all things considered it's no wonder there are nearly 35 000 homeless people living in the las vegas metro now before we get to number one make sure you leave a like and subscribe and let me know which city you want me to cover next but without further ado number one it's still sin city don't be fooled by the families and suburbs there is still 24 7 temptation here everywhere you go whether it's gambling addiction alcohol and drugs or insomnia from working weird hours and messing up your sleep schedule for years this is not a city for anyone who has an addictive personality sure there are plenty of people who make their living off the unique business opportunities only found in vegas but there are also plenty more who lose it all and fall into heavy depression basically if you struggle with self-discipline you're gonna struggle here and while most people who live here for a while start visiting the casinos and bars less and less seven percent of las vegas residents still struggle with gambling addiction and 25.6 struggle with alcoholism but if you love great weather and having easy access to world-class food and entertainment while still living a nice quiet suburban life what are you waiting for las vegas is the perfect place for you
