okay what is going on everyone welcome back to the world according to briggs a channel with an older than average youtube audience yeah really here's proof for my analytics most youtube channels have a chart very similar to this one it's just reversed this is probably why one of the most common requests is about places to retire people always want me to make videos about that some of my other video requests are cheapest and safest place to buy a home haunted places missing persons lists and where to find the best looking women i get that one all the time not sure how you rank that one everyone's tastes are different i think i know why i get that one look at this chart my channel is a sausage fest it would appear today's video is about the best major cities to retire not everyone can retire to the country to fish and garden in their golden years some people will retire in cities for a number of reasons one of the most common reasons is to be near good healthcare living out in the country you got great doctors and all that but probably not the facilities you need and not everyone can afford to retire at the belair country club a couple of miles from the ucla medical center retiring on a tight budget is unfortunately more common than not a bureau of labor and statistics survey found that about 42 percent of americans have less than 10 thousand dollars saved up for retirement if that's your situation looking for a cheap place to live is important but only 22 percent of americans choose where to move based on the potential to save money another survey found today's video is about the best cities to live based on the annual retirement income needed to cover basic costs including housing groceries transportation and utilities and also cities that have decent health care that was a really long intro i apologize let's get started [Music] number 10 tulsa oklahoma tulsa oklahoma is probably one of the better cities in the country it has its challenges which i pointed out in a previous video but it's not terrible one of the city's nicknames is the oil capital of the world this city has a long history pulling oil out of the ground sort of built the place it's a good size city but not terribly populated the entire metro area has just under a million people like 9.95 so it's almost a million it might be by the end of the next census all right so let's say it's time to retire from someplace expensive like los angeles or new york city you could sell that modest 750 thousand dollar middle class home in los angeles and live like a king in tulsa or a queen if you're part of that 23 percent of my audience the weather is decent with the hottest months being july and august with temperatures averaging around 93.1 fahrenheit 33.9 celsius the winter months stay between 50 and 30 degrees not terrible they have got some really really cold times on record but normally it stays between 50 and 30. the cost of living in oklahoma the whole state is one of the lowest in the country and tulsa being one of the major cities in the state still maintains a really low average retirees looking for affordable housing find it in tulsa a decent livable home in a nice neighborhood will cost you about two hundred and twenty thousand dollars that's it if you wanna get a really nice home you're looking around three hundred and fifty thousand the rich people stay in homes over 500 000 that's the pool property everything now when it comes to health care tulsa has a handful of really good hospitals and a bunch of specialty places like spine and heart centers a couple of the best would be the oklahoma state university medical center and the hillcrest hospital solid places to get your healthcare needs and for those of you that are 20 and not understanding why i bring that up as you get older you'll understand why i bring that up the percent of senior citizens living in tulsa right now is 13.4 percent but maybe that's not your crowd you're a little bit younger 21.5 of the population of tulsa is 45 to 64. so that's kind of nice now they figure to live here comfortably your total annual expenditure will be about forty four thousand five hundred and eighty eight dollars that's not a terrible amount it's kind of cheap to live in tulsa compared to other cities at size number nine mobile alabama you could do a lot worse in retirement than mobile alabama you have the bay right there and the gulf's not too far away so that's a plus a handful of decent golf courses sure some of them are country clubs which you know kind of sucks if you're retired on a budget the weather is decent in mobile summers get humid but nothing compared to other inland southern cities trust me i've been to a lot of them and mobile's not that bad summers get into the 90s but rarely get into the triple digits that's not something you got to worry about winters can dip into the 40s but normally we'll stay around the mid to low 50s so basically buy some windbreakers sandals live there no speedos this isn't florida nobody wants to see that mobile is a really nice city compared to some of the other cities in the south like i'd said it has a truckload of problems it should really work on but it's better than the freightliner of problems other cities in the south have like baton rouge jackson mississippi and new orleans mobile is so much better than those places you can buy a livable home here for under a hundred and fifty thousand dollars that is a home that wasn't a crack house three weeks ago well-maintained front yard backyard homes built probably in the 60s or 70s for under 150 000 that's a good price 250 you can get a nicer home in a nice neighborhood built maybe the last 20 years and you'll probably never have to see anyone raiding your cans on garbage day looking for recyclables they have a bunch of hospitals from what i've read about half of them are decent the other half not so much do your research if you're moving here i don't want to get into which hospitals suck i get a phone call from the director of the hospital and that's never good mobile also has the highest percentage of seniors on this list 15.5 percent of the residents of mobile alabama are senior citizens 65 and above 21.1 percent are between 45 and 64 so more people to hang out with what you're gonna need to live here is 43 597 that's what they expect you to need to live in mobile alabama comfortably in retirement [Music] number eight winston-salem north carolina winston-salem has become a very popular city in the last decade but it has still maintained some of the benefits of not being that popular here's some quick facts the cost of living here is four percent lower than the north carolina average and it's 13 lower than the national average winston-salem's real estate prices are 10 lower than north carolina's average and the rental prices are 12 lower than north carolina's average those are all stats that belong to a city that people are flocking out of winston-salem is one of the best places to retire on a budget thanks to the cost of living being 13 lower than the national average that is the thing that draws people to this city it's dirt cheap to live here and it's not a bad city they have the lowest transportation costs on this list that includes the price of public transportation car insurance car repairs fuel anything transportation related it's dirt cheap in this city now here's the downside they have a lower than average income for retirees winston-salem is another city where working retirees are struggling to find decent paying jobs now if you don't have to work in your retirement this is a perfect place for you despite that many people still live here and that brings me to the main reason they do live here and they do move here the high quality of healthcare they have some of the best in the country in winston-salem and stop typing i'm sorry you had a bad experience at the hospital whenever i bring up a place has great healthcare i always have a couple people that want to tell me about how bad it really is because they had a bad experience when i don't know they went to the emergency room because they accidentally sat on a dyson vacuum hose while it was on and the nurse laughed at them when they limped into the emergency room in a robe holding a dyson vacuum the weather here is nice summer months stay in the 80s with a rare trip into the triple digits not that bad winters can get into the 30s but once in a blue moon may go lower not much but they go lower the percent of retirees 65 and older in winston-salem is 13.7 percent and the 45 to 64 crowd that's about 25 24.7 so it's a solid place to move if you're retired [Music] number seven el paso texas the sun city makes it onto this list for a number of statistical reasons if you were going off my opinion it would be much higher on this list like number one or two el paso is a strange city in a few respects the thing i noticed when i first visited was how small it is i thought it would be bigger we've all heard about el paso so right away you assume that it's a big city it's not the city itself has about 650 000 residents which isn't a lot the metro area has almost 850 000 which again is not a lot for a city that everyone knows about it's no dallas or houston which in my opinion is really good thing the estimate for the 2020 census is el paso grew by over 40 000 people and that should bring them up to almost 700 000 they are growing again that's kind of a good thing now about el paso the city's crime rate is 32 percent lower than the texas average real estate prices are about 16 percent lower than the state average the cost of living is about 6 percent lower than the state average and 10 percent lower than the national average so you could save some money just by moving here if you watch too much political theater on television you probably thought being so close to the border el paso would be a war zone run by drug cartels the stats will show you that is total bs el paso has some crime like every place else but nothing near what you might think this is a city with good people good families that will invite you to a barbecue at any given moment if you're retired military you have fort bliss right there so you can shop at the commissary and px anytime you want they also have you know medical and everything else there when it comes to housing you can get a nice livable home in el paso for somewhere between 150 000 and 200 000 that's like just a house front yard backyard no frills no pool nothing like that if you want something really nice it's between 250 and 300 000. if you're retiring rich those houses go for about five to six hundred thousand it is hard if i couldn't really find any that were above seven hundred thousand here the really really nice ones with the circular driveway and all that stuff in between five and six hundred thousand now one thing to be warned about el paso which you could probably imagine if you know anything about texas the summers get hot here by sunblock buy a lot of sunblock and hats now would they figure to live comfortably in el paso you're gonna need forty two thousand nine hundred dollars a year that's their estimate to live comfortably the percent of seniors in el paso is twelve point two percent that's 65 and above the percent of people between 45 and 64 that's almost a quarter of the population 24.5 percent so if you're retiring i'd give el paso a good look if you don't mind the heat [Music] number six wichita kansas well it's in kansas so right off the bat you know the cost of living is going to be low kansas is known for two things being a cheap place to live and boredom if you're in your 20s but as you get into your 40s 50s and 60s that boredom becomes a welcome escape so it's all good i've only been to wichita a few times for a day or two not much so i'm not the best judge of the night life but my friend gary on the other hand has lived there since birth he's lived there so long he remembers the original pizza hut building i think he said his dad worked there in the 60s or worked near there i forget but he said they've never been known as a great place for people in their 20s it's usually people in their 20s are moving out and they come back when they're in their 40s 13.9 percent of the population here is over 65. that 45 to 64 age range it's 25 of the population the cost of living in wichita kansas is nine percent lower than the national average and the housing is dirt cheap real estate prices in wichita are 11 percent lower than the kansas average and 23 percent lower than the national average that's where this place shines i looked at zillow and found livable homes with no chalk outlines in the driveway for under a hundred thousand dollars they had some that needed work and that really weren't the best part of town for under fifty thousand you could afford a monthly house payment working part-time at pizza hut for that price sure you may have to patch a few bullet holes and get the carpets replaced but you're getting a house for under fifty thousand dollars have your family pray for you if you find a house for over five hundred thousand it borderlines on being called an estate i saw some 600 700 000 homes in wichita and they're crazy nice if those were in los angeles they'd be worth three million dollars two and a half something like that i'm not even kidding they figure the average annual income you need to live comfortably in wichita is 42 600 wichita has some great hospitals and that's good news for the older crowd definitely give wichita look [Music] number five lubbock texas lubbock texas is home to the late great buddy hawley texas tech university and a really low cost of living the cost of living in this northwestern texas city is about 15 percent lower than the national average and it's one of the cheapest places to retire in the country if you're looking to buy or rent i have good news for you lubbock real estate prices are 17 lower than the texas average rental prices in lubbock are about eight percent lower than the state average you can get a livable house around 150 to 180 000 these are nice houses that are well maintained not run down and nice houses nice neighborhoods really nice newer homes go between 250 and 300 000. so yeah definitely doable on a retirement income on top of all the financial good news you have healthcare that gets outstanding grades university hospital is one of the best in the state according to a travel nurse i know i looked it up and the reviews tend to agree with her that's all the good news here's some of the bad news they have some crime not detroit or east st louis crime but they have their fair share it can get hotter than hell i think at least i've never been to hell unless you count that time i took my kids to see the wiggles years ago that was hell it wasn't very hot but it was hell the summer temperatures can get into the 90s and stay there for most of the summer and occasionally climb into the triple digits the last negative thing is it's ugly it really is in miami you have the art deco look new england you have the colonial look in lubbock texas it looks like someone settled with the dirt and dead grass look really it's the weirdest place lot of dirt but from the financial and healthcare standpoint this is one of the best places to live the annual income that you'll need to retire here is 42 100 a year that's what they predict now the percentage of seniors in lubbock texas is pretty good 13 are 65 and above 23.9 are that 45 to 64 range so a lot of friends to make there if you're retired you could all get together and yell at kids to get off your dead lawn hey you kids get off my dirt [Music] number four greensboro north carolina look at that north carolina made the list twice greensboro and winston-salem are kind of close to each other but they both had some stats that were different and both belong on this list why not it's a great state greensboro cost of living is 12 percent lower than the national average and that's the first reason it made this list it is also a more affordable option than the state's other big cities like charlotte durham and winston-salem like i'd said it has the most affordable groceries and healthcare of any place on this list greensboro is one of those places that's big enough to have everything you need in a big city but small enough for you to know like your neighbors and run into people that you know when you get into bigger cities it always seems like the people tend to not know their neighbors even the ones that like live directly across street mute you just don't know them people who live here love it and say they have no reason to leave those who do leave often return to greensboro to raise a family and retire when it comes to housing the real estate prices are about five percent lower than the north carolina average north carolina's already pretty low the rental prices in greensboro are four percent lower than the state average so you could save money there too the city is a little different though when it comes to real estate most the cities on this list stayed within a certain price range i guess like 200 000 to 400 000 and you know just with a few above or below greensboro has a bunch of everything for as low as 125 000 for a nice house that you know may need a little work two million dollar homes and a bunch of things in between one thing i did notice is they have a bunch of duplexes it's like that was a big trend in the 80s or 90s and they have plenty of those to go around they have a lot of real estate there for sale i was kind of shocked at the amount that they had but they figure you need to live every year here is forty one thousand eight hundred and twenty dollars that's it now this is the other reason you might wanna live here if you're retired 15.1 percent are 65 and above 27 are between the age of 45 and 64. so there's a lot of people in your age group to get to know in greensboro north carolina definitely a solid choice especially the the healthcare here is a phenomenal and at a good price apparently number three buffalo new york okay so buffalo would normally not be a place i would advise moving to but they have all the right stats in all the right places let's talk about the bad first it is cold buffalo is one of the coldest snowiest big cities in the united states cold normally doesn't mesh well with older folks i don't mind it some do that's why so many move to florida and arizona and they have some crime they actually have more crime than any other city on this list that doesn't mean the whole place is bad like chicago they have some areas that bring the whole city down here's the first trick to buffalo don't live in the city stay in the metro area in one of the many suburbs around the actual city of buffalo so you could still take advantage of the low housing costs and great health care let's get on to the good news about buffalo the cost of living in buffalo is 19 lower than the national average that includes most of the burbs health costs are especially low actually ranked as one of the lowest health care costs in the united states for a city and most medical facilities are highly rated here's the second trick you are right next to the canadian border you are one bridge a border checkpoint and a passport from getting some tim hortons and half price or better prescriptions housing in the city isn't the best but the suburbs are great kenmore williamsville harris hill the list goes on in any of these areas you can get a decent house in the neighborhood of two hundred to four hundred thousand things in the hundred fifty thousand area are going to need some trips to home depot and patience what they figure you need to live in buffalo comfortably is 41 324 that's pretty cheap the percentage of senior citizens living in buffalo is 15.2 percent and 25.1 percent are between the ages of 45 and 64. so that's all really good news buffalo's not the best place but like i said it's got all the right stats in all the right places and it's right next to canada for your meds [Music] number two fort wayne indiana fort wayne really should be number one on this list the only thing holding them back from the number one spot is the affordability number and the percentage of retirement age residents only one city beat them by the only two stats this list was based on so many things not calculated on this list are far better stats in fort wayne than any other entry on part one or two of this list crime traffic great place for families parks rivers schools they got it all but fort wayne's low-cost living makes it one of the best cities for retirement this city in northeastern indiana has a cost of living about 21 percent lower than the national average it has the third lowest utility cost of all the cities on this list in fort wayne you have access to all the things you'd expect to find in a larger city great entertainment great hospitals and a respectable art scene you also get some of the benefits that come with living in a small town like buskerfest this is a festival devoted to street performers and the annual three river festival those are like total small town things but they're happening in a relatively big city the quality of homes you get for the price will make you rethink your past life choices i encourage you to check out zillow or redfin whichever one you like to look at and look at the quality of homes and neighborhoods you can get for 150 000 i'm not even kidding i was shocked if you live in san francisco new york city or la you might start to cry when you see the homes and the prices in a budgeted retirement you can afford to own a home in fort wayne indiana fort wayne's real estate prices are 18 lower than the indiana average indiana's average is already lower than the national average rental prices in fort wayne are 10 lower than indiana's average what they figure you need to live in fort wayne yearly in retirement is 40 two dollars that's it that's not a lot of money when all things are considered the percentage of seniors in fort wayne is 13.4 percent now that's not the highest on this list but it's still respectable and the age of people 45 to 64 is 21 fort wayne would be my choice [Music] and number one cleveland ohio yes you heard me right i said cleveland ohio stop typing let me explain this city on the banks of lake erie is experiencing growth and revitalization it's getting better and if you don't mind harsh winters this is a great place to live in retirement and it's only getting better sure there are areas you should avoid like i avoid baked goods from my cousin's ex-wife both are very scary and very dangerous like so many other cities around this part of the country cleveland has been in bad shape for a lot of years but in the past six or seven years they have been turning the corner and they're getting better the good news is the cost of living and the housing costs haven't realized it's getting better yet and that is why cleveland is on this list stats alone cleveland is sort of broken into two parts the east and the west they are divided by the cuyahoga river the west side is home to gordon square art districts and the great lakes brewing company while the east side houses the trendy flat east banks waterfront district and progressive field where the indians play the downtown area has been transformed for the most part and some of the bad neighborhoods are in that process a lot of older homes are being restored and sold for next to nothing again look at zillow and you'll find nice homes for around a hundred thousand dollars they won't be on the best blocks but they're not in a war zone like people want you to believe my advice is look for neighborhoods that don't have a bunch of houses with boarded up windows those are either abandoned or homes to serial killers but like i said stats alone get cleveland on this list what they figure you need to live in cleveland is 37 000 a year now keep in mind number two on this list the second lowest was forty thousand you had a three thousand dollar drop just by moving to cleveland the percent of seniors living in cleveland is fourteen point three percent now here's where the other bonus is almost thirty percent of the population is that 45 to 64 range so there's a lot of people in your age demographic if you're retiring that live in cleveland like i said stats alone get cleveland on this list in the number one spot sure it's not the best place it's got a lot of other problems but it's getting better and it's definitely worth a look then you look at the healthcare cleveland ohio has some of the best hospitals in the country hands down ask anyone they'll tell you sure you're gonna get the people that were stabbed a bunch of times that said they had to wait like 20 minutes but you know those things happen when you're getting stabbed all right so that is the end of this list i hope you guys enjoyed it hope you got some information out of it i know that cleveland one was kind of a curveball but we were going by stats pretty much alone on this one and they fit the bill so yeah i personally would choose fort wayne over all of these anyway if you like what we're doing here feel free to subscribe give the video a big thumbs up if you enjoyed it everybody have a great day be nice to each other
