what's happening hot stuff welcome to ms mojo and today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 movie characters that wouldn't work today i meant with you sir oh captain ring it's ing oh it's like ring but without the r the eye it's just it's short short short's good you guys are pathetic i'm gonna find myself a little hottie it was in the 70s everything was different i was well known for my parties for this list we'll be looking at big screen characters whose behavior and purpose in their respective films are problematic offensive and or culturally insensitive we're excluding cartoon characters plot details will be discussed so this is your spoiler alert times are changing for the better but which of these characters still baffle you the most let us know in the comments number 10 saka katara and general iro the last airbender avatar the last airbender was originally a popular animated television series in the 2000s before it was made into a 2010 movie with grand plans for a trilogy what would you do if they try to take me away that kills them all we know today that the trilogy plans didn't come to fruition part of the reason was that many of the film's leads were played by caucasian actors despite the world of avatar being populated by characters influenced by inuit and east asian people i don't think that's a good idea we started a rebellion try to talk him out of it played by jackson rathbone and nicola peltz saka and katara triggered widespread negative fan reactions i knew you were real i always knew you returned though general ira was played by the iranian-american actor sean tube it couldn't be ignored that his role like most of the speaking parts played by darker skinned people was a member of the fire nation who served as the series antagonists then there's still a chance you can give your life back for the spirits the movie's casting mishaps even triggered a letter writing campaign and various protests number nine ben jabateuya short circuit he had me with a fork sword number five left at the briefing station and then it just disappeared back in the 80s the comic science fiction flick short circuit was generally well received by moviegoers centering around an experimental military robot the movie even had a sequel two years later today the east indian character of ben jabituya as played by white actor fisher stevens would not fly it's bad enough to have a white actor play a non-white character with a stereotypical put on accent and have both his hair and skin darkened but short circuit also makes a joke about jabbatoya's background when he's asked where his family hails from jabbatoya replies that they are from the us where are you from anyway bakersfield originally no i mean your ancestors oh damn it pittsburgh if he was born and raised in the u.s why did he have an accent go figure number eight captain allison ing aloha hollywood seems to be slowly moving in the right direction when it comes to casting these days but it still has some ways to go this place has a lot of mana that's hawaiian i know what it means captain's power spirit it's still baffling to realize that as recently as 2015 emma stone played captain allison ing who was supposed to be one-quarter chinese and one-quarter hawaiian descent stone has come out and expressed her regret for playing the character if i may however it's still cringy to watch her play someone written to be a proud hawaiian but looking nothing like one though her character was based on a real-life person who also didn't resemble their hawaiian heritage the point being made here is that they were still of that background i'm at a crossroads where i can't mess up and i don't want to wind up a decal on your laptop one of the movie's hardest scenes to watch was allison correcting bradley cooper's character brian gilcrest about how to pronounce her last name i'm a peppermint tea girl well you have a good time i meant with you sir oh captain ring it's ing oh it's like ring but without the r the i it's just it's short progress might still take some time number seven holden mcneil chasing amy back in 1997 chasing amy was an indie darling winning two independent spirit awards and was a big step in the career of comedian and filmmaker kevin smith i want us to be something that we can't be and what's that a normal couple today chasing amy is problematic in so many ways one of them is its protagonist holden mcneil played by ben affleck and i would risk this friendship for the chance to take it to the next plateau because it is there between you and me you can't deny that in the comedy drama mcneil knows his love interest alyssa jones played by joey lauren adams is gay but he still pursues her anyway when he reveals his love for her and she rebukes him he tells her she might need a period of adjustment listen that's every relationship there's always gonna be a period of adjustment a period of adjustment there's no period of a desmond hold and i am gay jones naturally gets mad at mcneil but a few beats later runs into his arms and they start making out in the rain how convenient for mcneil and what happened to all of jones's objections number six john milton scream three in the light of the harvey weinstein scandal the character of john milton played by lance henriksen certainly has creepy parallels with the real life film producer it was in the 70s everything was different i was well known for my parties the weinstein company produced multiple movies in the scream franchise and in the third installment transactional sex happens to be a key plot point it was for girls like her to meet men men who could get them parts if they made the right impression in arguably the most uncomfortable scene of scream 3 studio president john milton defends deplorable behavior by hollywood power players when he's confronted with evidence that he was involved in an assault years before just like weinstein milton claimed that the woman involved was fully complicit when she attended one of his notorious parties no charges were brought and the bottom line is rainer reynolds wouldn't play by the rules you want to get ahead in hollywood you gotta play the game or go home wow just too creepily close to reality number five long duck dawn 16 candles the asian foreign exchange student long duck dong from 16 candles unfortunately became an asian american cliche for that generation before long duck dong asian characters in hollywood movies were more often than not portrayed as socially and or sexually [Music] very incompetent dinner appetizing food fits neatly into interesting round pie played by getty watanabe the donger as he's referred to became a cultural boogeyman to many asian americans who grew up in the late 80s his cringy introduction is met with the sound of a gong an effect that follows him throughout the film and he's also continually depicted as weird and weak while taking almost all stereotypical characters of asians at the time where is my automobile automobile number four louis skolnick and gilbert lowe revenge of the nerds many teen sex comedies from the 20th century have not aged well i know what we're gonna do the same goes for their characters lewis and gilbert from revenge of the nerds were two nerds seeking revenge against jocks while also trying to have some good old college fun that fun unfortunately involved the seduction of women through misogynistic behavior sexist jokes and the objectification of women one particularly troubling scene was when lewis while pretending to be stan tricks the jock's girlfriend who also happens to be lewis's crush into being physically intimate with him today we call that sex by deception let's keep that kind of behavior and those kinds of characters in the past and out of comedies they're all nerds as good as you yes number three steve stiffler the american pie franchise the 80s had revenge of the nerds the 90s and 2000s had the american pie franchise and the misogynistic character of stiffler you guys are pathetic i'm going to find myself a little hottie or as he likes to call himself the stiffmeister played by sean william scott stiffler portrayed behavior that encapsulated toxic masculinity throughout the franchise all you gotta do is set up some sort of private link or whatever on the net and tell me the address where to begin he convinces jim to set up a camera to spy on a female foreign exchange student and he invades the privacy of two women whom he suspects are lesbians check it out potential lesbians leaving the building and these are only some of his antics in the first two movies the franchise took a somewhat positive turn in the later films though and thankfully stiffler has become a dated misogynistic relic from a different time number two mammy gone with the wind hattie mcdaniel may have become the first african-american woman to win an academy award for her role in gone with the wind but today that win has proven to be bittersweet the character of mammy was a racial caricature of african-american women in america and hollywood at the time she was portrayed as happy and content with her position as a slave oh now miss scarlett you come on and be good and he just lit unfortunately mcdaniel's portrayal helped solidify and restrict black actors at the time to playing servant roles fortunately we are making strides in the struggle towards racial equality and can take soulless in the fact that we have come a long way from characters like mammy today what trouble are you talking about you know what trouble i was talking about i was talking about mr ashton wilkes he'll be coming to atlanta when he gets his leave and you sitting there waiting for him just like a spider he belongs to miss melanie you go pack my things like mother said before we continue be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest breakfast at tiffany's speaking of coming a long way remember the time when hollywood legend and white actor mickey rooney played an asian character in the 1961 hit movie breakfast at tiffany's mythical rivalry i broke this oh darling i am sorry but i lost my key the crew applied makeup and gave the actor a prosthetic mouthpiece to wear for his caricature of a japanese man over the years critics have described rooney's portrayal as an uncomfortable stereotype overtly racist and misguided so much so that in 1993's dragon the bruce lee story the rom-com is used as an illustration of hollywood's racism towards asian people when bruce lee and his future wife linda are watching the film in 30 seconds let's get out of here though breakfast at tiffany's is undeniably a classic it isn't perfect and it's hopefully one film that we have and will continue to learn from do you agree with our picks check out this other recent clip from ms mojo and be sure to subscribe and ring the
