these are the top 10 good and bad things about the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor in my opinion let's get stuck into the good number 10 it looks tough obviously design is a subjective thing but I think everyone will agree this looks very tough and muscular which seems to be very important for Utes you can't have a fancy looking Ute or an elegant Ute it has to be tough and Macho and this certainly is it's got pumped wheel arches with these nice lines here in the body workor just to accentuate the fact that it's got bulging wheel archers and then at the front very sturdy with Ford written prominently across the grill proper bash plates as well underneath yeah it looks very tough I think it's one of the best looking Utes on the market I think it looks very consistent as well like the front matches the back and the sides everything looks very consistent number nine the engine yeah so this features a bespoke twin turbo V6 petrol engine it's actually one of the only petrol options in this class excluding the big American pickup trucks which I don't think fairly stack up against these smaller sort of Utes that we know in Australia like the hux the dmax and the bt50 and and so on at 292 KW it is one of the most powerful Utes in this specific class as well but the torque the maximum torque 583 new M isn't all that impressive compared with the power so even the standard Ranger with the V6 diesel produces 600 newon M however when it comes to Performance this engine is a beauty it can also run on 91 Ron fuel as well and that's that's pretty good considering this thing does like a drink which we'll get to a bit later on number eight attention to detail yeah so Ford has really focused on what buyers want in this segment with the new ranger not just with the Raptor so you can option up for all sorts of accessories from ARB and they're part of the official sort of Ford range and covered by the official Ford warranty but Ford knows that a lot of buyers do enhance and modify their Utes so even just in building it it it's pre-drilled some of the holes for bull bars and so on pre-wired some of the system so you can easily put a LED light bar on this thing without having to you know modify the vehicle too much it's like Ford yeah it knows that a lot of buyers do modify the vehicle for the my 23.5 and above Ford also offers a power roller shutter like what this vehicle features so you just hit the button there and it will roll back automatically which is very handy because you can go on family road trips and put things in the back and actually use it as a bit of a boot rather than a sort of loading space for only heavyduty gear it is fully sealed as well although I wouldn't trust it in a complete torrential rain sort of situation but I've driven these in the rain before and no water comes through so it is it is good but I just wouldn't put super valuable or precious items in the back number seven cabin comfort and refinement yeah so despite its racy red highlights along the seats and the steering wheel and around the air vents this is actually a pretty refined and comfortable place these seats were apparently inspired by jet fighter seats but they're actually very comfortable the cushioning is soft and the side bolsters hold you in but they're not too aggressive that it makes it uncomfortable it's surprisingly good for a big family road trip including in the back you've got similar sculptured seats in the back with these little Alcantara bits on the sides there and then the red highlights as well number six lots of Drive modes and settings to play around with yeah so we'll get in and I'll start it up for this basically this features a part-time four-wheel drive system which means it's rear wheeel drive most of the time it's not until you fiddle with the settings to change that around so down here you've got 2H 4H 4 L low range and 4 a 4 a means you can put it into uh 4A on the road on the tarmac and it will sort itself out it won't wind up the deer for the axles or anything like that it'll sort itself out but still give you the the Safety and Security of four-wheel drive and then down here you've got another drive mode switch you just push this and it will give you access to various settings like the diff locks and the hill descent control so then back on this switch you actually rotate this Outer Circle and it will come up with the main driving modes so we've got normal sport slippery mud and ruts that's just shifted into four-wheel drive when I went into mud and ruts sand let's turn the stability control off or the traction control off Bara mode which is pretty much the most hardcore mode you can you can have full diff locks front and rear and then you've also got a rock crawl mode which is basically low range so it's automatically switching into low range so basically you've got every mode that you need to conquer Australia number five I'm just going to stay in the car because it is a very hot day today 36° C outside I'll just leave the airon running the GoPro also overheats quite easily when you're running in 4k as well it's already overheated once and I've had to swap the battery so I'll just stay in here for these ones onroad performance yeah so I've timed 0 to 100 in the High 5 Seconds range on the old Channel I did try to uh repeat the time in in this exact vehicle I couldn't quite match it but I think the warmer conditions is probably not helping also it's a different model it's a different car so it's it's option L it's I don't know what fuel it's got in it when I pick it up so there's there's a number of different factors could be a bit of a Tailwind or headwind and so on but still a very quick time [Music] [Music] nonetheless it is the quickest accelerating newed in this specific class keeping in mind I'm excluding the big American pickup trucks the TRX X Ram is about a second quicker N2 100 or even a bit more than that [Music] actually but that does feature a 700 Horsepower Supercharged V8 number four off-road performance yeah so on-road performance is very good but off-road performance is probably even better I've taken these off Road in pretty serious conditions and it just goes anywhere it'll do whatever you want it to do it can rock crawl it can go you know through boggy sand boggy mud or just just straight up rallying and doing jumps and so on it'll do everything that you want it to [Music] do [Applause] got and perhaps best of all it's lots of fun to drive it's not just about conquering the different types of terrain it's a lot of fun and enjoyment when you're driving it number three ride Comfort yeah so a lot of UTS on the market they're not designed for ride Comfort they're designed for carrying and towing things that's why there's a big tub on the back so the sacrifice of that is ride Comfort is usually at the lower part of the priority list and it is they are they can be a bit bumpy to drive uh because they usually have leaf springs at the back but that's so they can carry heavy things and still be relatively stable and safe to drive if you try and load up a normal wagon or something like that with the amount of gear that you can get into the back of a conventional Ute then you you your ass is going to be scraping the ground and it's not going to be very stable to drive at all it'll be illegal in fact models like this though are a bit different there aren't many there's only this and the TRX basically but they're designed for racing and rallying off-road so this features Fox Racing suspension with live valve technology it basically means it's able to be proactive in its damping control rather than just reactive and it can monitor inputs at up to 500 times per second that all sounds very exciting and racist and Technical but what it means for you is that it is quite comfortable it's actually the most comfortable in my opinion the most comfortable Ute in this specific class there are a lot of consumers in this segment that are buying these dual cab style Utes for family and recreational purposes rather than just a Workhorse and I think they're kind of missing the point of what these are traditionally meant for whereas this the Raptor I think it's actually best suited for that type of Duty better than any of the other Utes on the market really because it is more comfortable it is a little bit safer in terms of handling it's got coil springs at the back and yeah a more comfortable experience and this actually handles really well so you can drive this as a pretty much like an SUV and it will still turn around corners and so on it doesn't feel unstable it feels very solid on the road again I think that's better suited to family type of Lifestyle recreational style buyers number two the price I know it's pretty steep it starts from about $87,900 in Australia at the time of this video recording which is pretty steep compared with all of the other dual cab Utes in this specific class again excluding the big American pickup trucks but at 8799 I actually think it's a pretty good price considering the extra extra engineering that has gone into this it's got completely different suspension than any other Ranger it's got a completely different engine than other Ranger different brakes and it's just got so many come on man I think that's worth the extra you know 20 or $15,000 more than the otherwise Flagship Ranger I also think it's a decent price because Ford could have easily presented this for about $1 120 Grand and people would still buy it they'd still s snap it up and then the number one good thing about the ranger raptor is that it's a troublemaker you can actually lock the rear diff in this without being in four-wheel drive which I think is just it's just pure being a troublemaker that means you can do burnouts and drifting and all that sort of thing on the dirt or on the tarmac uh with the rear diff locked which is just crazy but it's also got a barking exhaust it's marketed doing jumps and things and there even a bar hard driving mode which is just pure rallying basically and no other Ute on the market at the moment offers that sort of attitude and character except for that TRX but that's priced about three times higher than this now for the bad things about the Raptor in my opinion number 10 there is no Corner step so with the normal Rapter uh Ranger you've got a little step that's embedded into the rear bumper bar here but because of the exhaust system on the Raptor that step wasn't possible the there are these little tow hooks you can use which is what I used just before to step up into the back you can use those to step up in but other than that you do have to use the tire or just heave yourself over the tailgate there number nine the exhaust sounds like a fart yeah it's it's got a good exhaust note compared with the other vehicles in this specific class but if you have a good listen to it it doesn't sound that appealing I've heard better sounding six-cylinder engines petrol engines an inline 6 does sound better in my my personal opinion V6 is I don't know it's hard to come across a good sounding V6 but there are some out there the Alpha Romeo Julia Top Model sounds really nice McLaren arura that sounds nice obviously that's a superc car but I think they could have done a bit better with this exhaust system there are a number of exhaust modes you can go through as well but I couldn't find I couldn't hear a big difference between I think there's four different modes there's not a big difference especially on the spot once you get up and going it does seem a little bit louder in the Bara mode but not that different it's actually quite loud in the standard default normal mode I think it's just called normal have it listen anyway and tell me what you think [Music] oh [Music] number eight not dignified yeah so this is as I was saying it's a bit of a troublemaker and I think that it'll be difficult to take your grandmother to church in this with you know with a straight face or go to a funeral especially in this color because you're going to stand out like a sore thumb number seven fuel economy yes obviously this isn't designed for fuel economy but I did a bit of a trip with the family uh up the coast on the weekend lots of highway driving pretty much all highway driving actually and the computer returned an Aver an average of 12.7 L per 100 kmers that's pretty high so just it's just something to consider for the performance you get in return I think it's okay I've driven quicker vehicles that use less fuel excluding hybrids and electric vehicles I've driven quicker vehicles that use less fuel fuel but nothing in this class so you got to keep in mind this is a big heavy vehicle it can tow it can carry things in the back not as much as the regular Ranger which I'll get to in a minute but it can do all those things so compared with anything else in this market well there's nothing to compare it to again except for that TRX V8 the official average consumption is 11.5 and it has an 80 L fuel tank which means the theoretical range uh average range is about 700 km it's not the best and that that's on paper so if you use that 12.7 as a calculation you you'll get about 600 km out of it I'm just going to stay in here for the next one because the camera is overheated now three times number six breaking performance now I think this is a quite serious one I think it's it's pretty interesting as well this will stop from 100 km hour in a v-box verified 46 to 47 m which is pretty it's a fair bit more than a regular Ranger which takes around 42 to 43 M on the same piece of timac a normal hatchback or SUV takes about 37 38 or maybe 39 M if it's doesn't have the best tires European Vehicles 35 36 M so for this to require 10 m extra that's you know that's that last bit before the impact or that that that impact in other words if you're using the Raptor just to take the kids to school every day and that's it and never hit the dirt I think it's yeah definitely worth considering that if on the other hand you are planning to utilize this for what it's built for then absolutely there is a sacrifice that you need to make in some areas and that's one of them this is all down to the BF Goodridge allterrain tires not just BF Goodridge most allterrain tires will require long longer stopping distances because there's less tread on the road as in less G less rubber on the road those big grooves in the tires they don't provide any grip they're just there to disperse mud disperse water but they don't help the car come to a complete stop number five Towing and load ratings the ranger Raptor has a Brak towing capacity of 2.5 tons which is 1 ton less than a normal Ranger that's that's a pretty decent chunk the payload in the back is also quite a bit less a Ranger Wild track is rated at about 951 kg for the payload whereas this is just 655 kg you will have to keep that in mind if you're planning to use the Raptor as a daily Workhorse compared with a regular Ranger or even the other dual cab diesel 4x4 Utes on the market number four engine looks yuck yeah so check out the engine some gas struts would have been nice forward for a performance model one that you're probably going to show off to your mates and you're going to pop the Bonnet to have a look I don't know I think you want something nicer to look at than that don't you think just to highlight some of the parts that you're looking at here that's the intake so that's where mud and sand go straight in over the front there uh and then goes through the air filter and then into the turbochargers and into the engine you've got a turbo down here on the side there a Garrett and there's another one on the other side and these pipes go through to the intercooler at the front before going into the engine intake here sorry I just had to change the battery yet again I think that's four Cycles I've gone through I've got a little lineup of batteries there so if you're watching GoPro please work on your battery temperature or your camera temperature that's the endurance batteries as well or apparently endurance batteries in my opinion they make no difference whatsoever so so the standard blue GoPro batteries are just the same these overheating just the same some other bits and pieces there you've got power steering uh and the air conditioning pipes but yeah I think they could have made that look a bit neater even if they put like a half or partial plate over the engine with you know twin turbo Ford performance or something written on it it'll just look a bit better than that which looks like someone has sneezed out a bunch of miscellaneous Automotive Parts number three ride is choppier than before this features a 2.5 version of Fox Racing suspension it does feel a bit choppier on the road compared with the previous or the first generation Ranger Raptor in my opinion anyway just on corrugations and little bumps like around you know normal streets and things just you can feel those little bits of little imperfections in the road more so than the previous generation I think that this would perform much better off the road though so I think that's what probably what Ford is aimed for here and the technology there the technology breadth is much better than before so this is more capable more Dynamic than before I'm simply referring to the ride on the road on particularly on country roads just feels a little bit more a little bit choppier than the first generation Raptor in saying that it still is more comfortable than probably any other dual cab used on the market in this specific class number two scattered touchcreen yes I'll have to go inside to show you this it is a nice big touch screen I'll give it that but some of the menu layouts and the functions and so on are just a bit scattered in my opinion you've got a home button up up here but it doesn't provide any of the vehicle settings if you're X out of that I've got it on sort of the radio menu down below you've got Radio phone satnav uh media which I don't know that button's kind of seems like it should be next to the radio button and then a trailer mode or trailer settings they could have arranged that in a more intuitive sequence with the different menus and so on and then again you've got these buttons down here for the drive modes and then the air conditioning that sort of swipes up and gives you options for all the air conditioning and you sort of got to swipe it down to get back to where you were but even that's not a sort of central screen I I guess that's my main issue there's no Central Hub I always feel like I'm you know I've got 50 tabs open on on on the computer or something like that there's there's just lots of pages here but no Central Hub except for that which which is even a drop down itself just out of Interest the new amarok which shares the same platform as this it's got its own Volkswagen system which I think is much better than the Ford system just in the menu layout the intuitiveness of of the different functions and then the number one bad thing about the ranger Raptor in my opinion is it's a troublemaker so yeah it's it's just not very dignified I can definitely see a lot of enjoyment out of this thing if I had a farm or something like that but as a day-to-day vehicle I was trying to drift this thing the other day and you know you wouldn't normally do that in a ute it just seems to be encouraging the fact that it's got a rear diff lock without being in four-wheel drive is also you know encouraging sort of bad behavior or fun Behavior depending on where your stand on that the engine is is loud it's uh yeah it's got crazy racing suspension it wants to do jumps and so on obviously you don't have to do any of these things you don't have to do burnouts you don't have to do jumps you don't have to engage baraha mode but you kind of feel like you're missing out on what the vehicle has been engineered for if you don't play around with some of those systems obviously that's not not going to appeal to everybody but I am glad that Ford at least offers something like this bit of enthusiasm in the market so there we have it guys the top 10 good and bad things about the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor what do you think have I miss something please let me know in the comments and please like And subscribe if you enjoyed this video I will have the full written review up on the website
