Splash signings BigTime contracts and all the Hope in the world free agency can be a thrilling time for NFL fans but there's one big question what if it doesn't work out these are the top 10 free agent fails in NFL history will kick it off with a guy you may have heard of at number 10 11 years into his Hall of Fame career Prime Time wanted more at age 33 the six-time all proo took a 7-year $56 million contract with Washington it wasn't that Dion was particularly bad in the nation's capital 15 starts and four picks in year one Collins down the middle knocked away and picked off by Sanders he came up with the big play at the right time his first interception of the safe it's that this was the only year he played in Washington Sanders announced his retirement from the NFL just before the 2001 season returning a portion of his signing bonus it just wasn't meant to be for Dion in DC although the star cornerback did make a comeback with the Ravens in 2004 let's go west now where the Chargers then in San Diego wanted a bigname receiver to join Drew Brees and leanian Tomlinson but he beat him David Boston he beat him clean Boston takes it in 50yd touchdown pass from plumber to Boston wide out David Boston led the NFL in receiving yards with nearly 1,600 yards in 2001 the former eighth overall pick was set to hit free agency in 2003 that's when the Chargers and Coach Marty Schottenheimer pounced signing the big Target to a 7-year $47 million contract with $12 million guaranteed bag of tricks tomon gets it back for bre looking for it all Boston extending incomplete but it wasn't a fit in San Diego Boston played just one year there and although his numbers weren't bad he quickly fell out of favor with the locker room the charger shipped him off to Miami for a sixth round pick in 2004 let's stay on offense for our first bunch of honorable mentions the defending champ LA Rams needed a replacement for Odell Beckham going into 2022 but Allan Robinson was a dud free agent signing from the four yd line he stands up he throws left and that one just went right past alen Robinson it was like he never saw it Allan Robinson is literally wide open and I think the ball just goes right through his hands he played just 10 games and total 339 yards after signing a three-year 46.5 million deal Robinson was traded to Pittsburgh after one season offensive tackle Jawan James Inked a four-year deal with Denver valued at 51 million bucks in 2019 the free agent bus started just three games in his lone season with the Broncos back it all the way up to 1995 in the third ever free agency period the soon Tobe disbanded Cleveland Browns signed wide receiver Andre ryen to a 5year $17 million contract doesn't sound like a lot now but that was the most lucrative contract for a wide receiver in history at the time Dam feel good be win [Applause] boy ryzen lasted just one year in Cleveland getting cut before the team moved to Baltimore the Chip Kelly era in Philadelphia was marred by brutal roster moves one of his most notable misfires was running back to Marco Murray in 2015 coming off his best year ever Murray signed a 5-year contract worth $40 million first down Bradford gets off to Murray and he's thrown for a loss inside the 10 and there's a penalty F but the former Pro played just a single season with the Eagles failing to do much of anything he was traded to Tennessee in 2016 all of us just like every one of you at home thought it was a two-horse race for namdi AWA entering Friday the Jets and the Cowboys going at it but instead the Eagles sign him 5 years $60 million 25 million of it guaranteed from one Philly Miss to another cornerback Nami awam was a prized free agent in the class of 2011 joining what many dubbed the Dream Team Eagles the veteran DB and the team for that matter never lived up to the hype Philadelphia brings four Matt steps going to sail it deep Jones is there it's caught 20 15 10 5 Julio Jones touchdown Atlanta 63 yards and pick out your favorite pro bowler he torched on the way down the far sideline D AA this time West up bump and run and Julio Jones ran right bying awesome W deal was worth 60 Mill million over four years yet he played just two seasons for Andy Reid as those Eagles teams won a combine 12 games namdi picked off only four passes in 32 games failing to reach his Pro Bowl level of play with the Raiders speaking of the Raiders who remembers the ill-fated Javon Walker signing time out because of the unsuccessful Challenge and farre going deep into double coverage and it is caught by Javon Walker in front of two Raiders for a touchdown at least Le New England with not much time and on Third and short plumber goes deep and the ball is Caught In The End Zone by Javon Walker the former first round pick was a big play machine through six seasons with the Packers and Broncos in turn the Raiders signed the 30-year-old free agent to a 6-year $55 million deal Javon Walker is staying in the AFC West leaving Denver heading to the Raiders Adams says the numbers of six years for 55 million with 16 million guaranteed 27 million in the first 3 years of the contract many couldn't believe the deal considering Randy Moss just signed a threee $27 million contract after a record setting season Walker floundered in Oakland appearing in just 11 games in two years with the team a straight drop a blitz from be alive down the right sideline for Walker he hit him right on the hands and he couldn't reel it in Walker got behind the coverage there of Chris Gamble 196 yards and two touchdowns after after signing the deal hard to think anything could be worse and that brings us to Lev on Bell after sitting out the entire 2018 season Holding Out for a bigger contract in Pittsburgh the former allpro back landed with the Jets in 2019 Le'Veon Bell didn't play a single game last year because he wanted a better deal than the Steelers were offering ended up taking a four-year deal from the Jets last night one that will pay him $52.5 million at just 27 years old and with fresh legs it should have been a different story with Bell and the Big Apple though he did rack up over 12200 yards from scrimmage in 2019 the AA was gone Bell rushed for just 3.2 yards per carry the lowest of his career to that point darn on a hand off to Le'Veon Bell he'll reverse field and Bell is going to lose big yards Bud dpri who has played at a pro bowl level but that leads to a loss of 11 and that forces Bel into a horrible decision Bell was released just 17 games into his contract ending a rocky tenure in New York let's stay with the mean green for another batch of honorable mentions the Jets doled Out 725 million bucks over 5 years to cornerback taine Johnson a bold signing considering Johnson hadn't even made a Pro Bowl in his first six seasons he lasted just two years in New York appearing in 17 total games three out of the shotgun rides inside play fake now he's going to look now he's going to let it fly downfield they like the Deep pass Garson is down here and so is Earl who picks it off at the 25 pass up field and it's intercepted picked off by Earl Thomas a Bonafide stud in Seattle safety Earl Thomas hit the free agent Market in 2019 Thomas Inked a 4-year $55 million deal with Baltimore 32 of that guaranteed he went on to make a pearl Bowl in year one and that was that the Ravens swiftly cut Thomas in 2020 citing conduct detrimental to the team after three Pro Bowl campaigns in Buffalo safety jerus bird joined New Orleans on a six-year contract worth up to $56 million sadly bir Tes meniscus in his first year of that deal and was never the same player he played Just Three total Seasons In The Big Easy Blitz odonnell over the middle intercepted wide open is Larry gr defensive back puts on odonnell intercepted and lry brown has a shot at a touchdown let's get in the time machine and travel back to 1996 now Super Bowl 30 MVP Larry Brown rode that wave into a 5-year 12.5 million contract with the Raiders that was a big- time number for a cornerback back then unfortunately it never paid off for the silver and black brown only made one start in two years with Oakland after four Pro bowls with the Chiefs Dale Carter's time in Denver was disastrous the talented Corner was suspended for the entire 2000 season in violation of the League's substance abuse policy the Broncos would later cut Carter in 2001 after just 14 total games two Matthews got it glitch comes they pick it up Stafford throws it is End Zone CAU oh baby What A Catch Kenny G you're a freak what a cat touchdown Detroit Lions Detroit's Kenny G posted back-to-back thousand yard SE seasons and even led the league with 11 receiving scores in 2019 what came next will go down as one of the worst deals in Giants History New York luring gal with a 4-year $72 million contract ahead of the 2021 season fake it the boot Jones stop and throw off the hands of Gade Rush coming they handle it Jones drop ball gal third down and 14 gal makes the catch and now the ball's out he dropped it and the crowd not happy with Kenny galade gal struggled mightily with the gmen going without a touch down in his first 25 games he played two years in New York gaining just over 600 yards on 43 total catches the Giants released G in March of 2023 they bring six oser floats one back of the end zone calwell touchdown Denver Osweiler the calwell he beat Logan Ryan Brock Osweiler quarterbacked the 2015 Broncos into the playoffs that is until pton Manning took back the Reigns for Denver Super Bowl push Osweiler went 5-2 putting up respectable numbers but did he do enough to secure this deal can you say dollar bills y'all Brock Osweiler leaving Denver for the Richer offer in Houston the Texans given the man with seven career starts 72 million bucks Osweiler was in line to replace the retired Manning in 2016 but Ed to take the massive contract in Houston who can blame him with 37 million guaranteed Osweiler set a Texans record with 16 interceptions in his first season he was benched in week 15 but returned late in the year to replace an injured Tom Savage oser led the Texans to a wildcard win before a three interception nightmare in the divisional round it's intercepted mccordi saw it coming look at the time Osweiler has here dangerous across the middle and it is intercepted by Ryan look how many Patriots are in the middle that field the Texans parted ways with their prized free agent after just one season shipping them off to Cleveland Osweiler is one of many bigname signal callers that didn't pan out in free agency let's take a look at some of the other QB whiffs the offense of the Jets still trying to get something going odal spins out Falls drops the never recovers it this is what's called worst case scenario start for Neil o' donnald the Jets spent big money on veteran Neil O'Donnell in 1996 he won just eight of 20 starts posting a 76.7 rating in just two seasons after refusing to renegotiate his deal odonnell was waved by coach Bill Parcels Chicago invested over 18 million guaranteed in Mike Glennon in 2017 though he received a three-year contract worth 45 million total the there was a team option for the final two seasons Glennon started just four games with the Bears before Mitchell trabis took over as the starter Bradford going up top and it's going to be intercepted by Eddie Jackson the contract King Sam Bradford Inked a two-year $40 million deal with the Cardinals in 2018 Arizona was outscored 74- 20 in three games with Bradford as their starter he retired after one season then there's Teddy Bridgewater in the 2020 panthers Carolina signed Bridgewater to a 63 million deal over three years safe to say it didn't pan out in the bizarre covid season Bridgewater went just 4- 11 though he did set career highs in several passing categories the vet was traded to Denver in 2021 JC Jackson the former Patriots star cornerback is headed to the Los Angeles charges he gets a huge deal 5 years $82.5 million $28 million in year one call it bad info bad luck or just downright bad Play We Won't sugarcoat it JC Jackson's time in LA was a disaster after signing a 5-year deal worth $82.5 million the fifth year Corner had ankle surgery causing him to miss the preseason then he got on the field climbs the pocket throws Midfield has a in and that is caught touchdown cheets JC Jackson had his arms outstretched shotgun Snapper Wilson now he's going to step up and throw wide open bustic coverage dolage to the end zone touchdown Broncos that's going to be on JC Jackson he just vacated his Zone he never saw they Rush four Gino going to the end zone for Goodwin caught touchdown JC Jackson beat on that one in the five games Jackson played in 2022 the cornerback allowed nearly 18 yards per cat patch and four touchdowns when targeted he ruptured his Patel attendant in week seven and was lost for the season Jackson played just two more games with LA in 2023 before the Chargers traded him back to New England mid-season even then GM Tom Tesco calling the signing a swing and a miss moving on to our number two selection a former Super Bowl hero turned free agency flop moves to the right it goes directly to Clement reverses it the pass goes in The End Zone to Nick f a touchdown by Nick fos from backup to Super Bowl MVP we all know the story of Nick FES by now but we forget the Philadelphia quarterback almost did it again in 2018 replacing an injured Carson Wentz FES went five- one including the playoffs that led to a monster deal in 2019 seeing the Jaguars dish out $88 million over four years Nick FS to the Jaguars and the numbers are massive 88 million this is a really nice Payday for Nick FS up to $102 million in incentives the Jags were moving on from Blake Bortles in hopes to find veteran stability and free agency they paid the price as fos was guaranteed over $50 million shot for fos FS steps deep Point End Zone caught touchdown DJ CH the over the shoulder grab concern now around Nick fos after taking that shot he's injured and just like that this deal was turned upside down fos fractured his collar bone in his very first game missing almost the entire season he returned two months later but never found his footing in Jacksonville 0 and four as a starter and that was the end of the story fos was traded to Chicago for a fourth round pick in March of 2020 before we get to number one let's preface by saying this free agency has not been kind to Washington if you're a fan now maybe the time to run Josh Norman has just signed a deal with the Washington Redskins it is worth I'm told by a source 5 years $75 million Josh Norman is now the highest paid cornerback in the NFL Josh Norman's 2015 allpro season was followed by a big time deal in the nation's capital though he was solid in his first three seasons with Washington Norman never reached that Pro Bowl level of play again 10 years earlier Washington struck out on a pair of big free agent signings Super Bowl 40 hero Antoine Randall L was signed to a seven-year contract he lasted Just Four Seasons scoring eight total touchdowns safety Adam archeleta cashed in on a six-year 30 million deal that same year he was a total bust demoted to the Special Teams Unit Midway through his first and only season in Washington fake the rolls Wilson's got a lot top one and somehow someway Paul Richardson comes up with the ball oh my goodness What A Catch you're bound to receive an offer or two when you can do things like that former Seahawks white out Paul Richardson went East on a 5-year $40 million contract in 2018 but he battled injuries and caught him easily 48 total passes getting cut after just two seasons 2021 saw the next Washington whiff with cornerback William Jackson thei after four years in Cincinnati Jackson Inked a three-year deal worth over 40 million bucks he played only 16 total games getting benched in early 20122 and backtrack all the way to 2002 a disaster by no means linebacker Jeremiah Trotter actually totaled over 200 tackles in two seasons with the team only problem he was signed for seven years Trotter was cut by a returning Joe Gibbs in 2004 Manning play fake under pressure sack it's Albert hedworth perhaps the most dominant defensive tackle in the late 2000s Albert Haynesworth was primed for a big deal about 5 and a half hours into the free agency signing period the biggest name and the biggest deal Albert Haynesworth now a member of the Washington Redskins Haworth gets the largest contract for any position other than a quarterback 7 years $100 million with 41 million guarantee no player to that point had received more guaranteed money in one contract the $100 million man did have some question marks coming in though could he stay healthy for a full year could he shake the stigma of taking plays off no and [Applause] no keeping the Play Alive they'll find someone in the back touchdown of I'm watching the replay and I realize why there's only three men rushing for the Redskins F Albert hanesworth ends up at the line of scrimmage and never gets up Haworth was nowhere near the player he was in Tennessee with the Titans in 2007 and 8 the big man racked up 14 1 12 total sacks and 27 tackles for loss compared to 6 and 1 half sacks and 12 tackles for loss in 2009 and 10 Haynesworth played just 20 total games in Washington constantly feuding with head coach Mike Shanahan he was finally traded to New England for a fifth round pick just before the 2011 season and that is your number one free agency fail in NFL history
