he's Vanderbilt's very own an Indiana native that grew up a Chicago Bears fan a man blessed with a rocket arm today's NFL Film Community would drool over and an aggressive Gunslinger mentality that made him fun to watch there hasn't been a football player quite like Jay cuddler before or since and he led an era of Chicago football that was also unlike most originally drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2006 Cutler played three season there before a falling out with a coaching staff resulted in a trade to the Bears the expectation was that Chicago a team that spent decades on top of decades searching for a player who could actually do what is known as a forward pass finally found someone that could do it the Bears were seen as the favorites to win the 2009 NFC North they would get a big test right away to see if that wasn't just blind fate traveling to Lambo field on Sunday Night Football to take on the Packers a team the Bears were s and3 against since 2003 and this was without a franchise quarterback leading the way imagine what they could do to Green Bay with Jay cuddler they' lose Cutler's debut with the Bears was an absolute disaster four interceptions with just one touchdown the show and the Packers won 21- 15 one Chicago Tribune reporter summed the game up perfectly Cutler was supposed to be the Packers worst nightmares instead he was their best friend but as the next three games indicated the season had just begun an impressive home game against the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers was followed by a close win at Seattle followed by a monster 48 to2 24 home win over the Detroit Lions to push the Bears to 3 and one in those three games C threw seven touchdowns to just one interception completing over 70% of his passes what followed was a 10-game stretch where Chicago came out with just two wins C threw 11 touchdowns to 20 interceptions in this Frame including five picks in a Thursday night game against the San Francisco 49ers with two games to go and the team eliminated from the playoffs at 5- n c had 19 touchdowns and 25 interceptions to show he'd have just one interception in the last two games both wins but the resulting 26 air turnovers were six more than the second place runner up even with the Bears ending their disappointing season season on a high note C had drawn the ey of media members such as former Rams coach and coordinator Mike Mars Bears coach Lovey Smith served as the defensive coordinator under March during his time with the St Louis Rams but what March didn't take into account was that the offense was set up to fail by offensive coordinator Ron Turner so Turner was let go and the Bears OC role was eventually filled by Mike [Music] Mars color and March both put the new coordinator's old comments aside side assuring that they were excited to work with each other the team started the 2010 season at 4 and3 but then won seven of their last nine games to finish 11 and5 as a result they clinched the NFC North and secured a first round buy with the nfc's second seed the additions of Hall of Fame Edge rusher Julius Peppers and cornerback Tim Jennings to the bears' defense helped them reach the top five and fewest points allowed this overshadowed an offense that finished with just6 more yards per play than the 2 and4 Carolina Panthers safe suffice or needless to say the offense struggled in a week seven loss to the Washington Redskins cover through four interceptions to Corner D'Angelo Hall the 20th player ever to collect that amount in a game conversely when color was ruled out for a week five game against the Carolina Panthers where both teams combined for seven interceptions and no touchdown passes the Bears won 23-6 the forward pass is a social construct they split the season series against the Packers who beat them in week 17 to secure a playoff spot at the last second but that was not important to Chicago for the time being they got to rest an extra week before taking on the 7 to9 Seahawks the first sub 500 team to win a playoff game the Bears won that game with little trouble 35 to 24 and Cutler made a little history in his first playoff win he became the first player in 55 Seasons with multiple passing and rushing touchdowns in a single play playoff contest the confidence in the windy city was soaring and all that separated them from a Super Bowl appearance was an NFC Championship date with the Green Bay Packers the Packers clawed their way to Road victories over the Philadelphia Eagles and one- seated Atlanta Falcons and in 20° Chicago weather the semi-final game turned into a defensive Showdown it didn't look like it would go the Bears way initially with Green Bay shutting them out for three quarters and taking a 14 to nothing lead Chicago finally scored on a touchdown run early in the fourth quarter but with 6 minutes left in the fourth they found themselves in a hole when the Bears quarterback threw a pick six to defensive tackle BJ Raji the deficit was now back to 14 but Chicago's quarterback led the offense on another touchdown DFT the defense got another stop and the Bears took it to the Packers 27 a minute and 15 left to decide the NFC champion after using their second timeout the Bears called an end round on Third and short that lost a couple then on fourth down Chicago's last prayer received a response of game-ending interception 21 to4 was the final score in Green Bay's favor and they would go on to win the Super Bowl two weeks later the city of Chicago was not only heartbroken but wanted answers at the end of the second quarter Jay Cutler threw an interception to close the first half and after one drive in the third quarter never came back in the quarterback that nearly pulled off the comeback was backup Caleb Haney who came in after four incomplete pass attempts from the other Bears backup Todd Collins but no one knew where Cutler was because of the Bears never disclosed his injury early all anyone knew was that he was nursing a knee injury consequentially Cutler's toughness was brought in the question players in media just ripped him apart verbally and years later Cutler admitted the criticism hurt he was fine with not being seen as a good player but that he quit on the team that aided him the harassment went to such lengths that even Packer's players were defending C also defending C and Blasting his critics Lovey Smith later clarified that Cutler suffered a sprain MCL which typically takes 3 to 4 weeks to heal and made the decision himself to rule out the quarterback after Consulting the team's medical staff with that hindsight all the comments over him apparently quitting on the team felt a lot harsher than they already were it was a terrific season that ended as antil climatic as it could ever along with carrying over to start the first quarter of the Bears 2011 campaign the team was 2 and three and Cutler was not having a good time with Mike martz's offensive scheme the seven-step dropback offense worked beautifully in the late '90s and early 2000s but in the early 2010s it was a relic of an ancient past the coach would not let him audible at the line of scrimmage resulting in unnecessary sacks when receivers couldn't get open quickly enough tit end were especially undervalued in March's scheme resulting in the Bears trading away legendary tight end Greg Olen to the Panthers color's frustration with March peaked in week six against the Vikings where pre- snap he was caught on Mike asking a teammate to tell Mars to well um his own guy the two downplayed the incident as one might expect but as we could see the Vibes were not good what was good were the Bears themselves who rallied after the incident to find themselves at 6 and three at the halfway point theyve then improved the S and3 following a win over the Chargers but at the cost of their franchise quarterback C had attempted to make a tackle on defensive back Antoine KAS that resulted in a broken thumb ending the quarterback season the offense was further hit by a season ending injury the star running back mat Forte a few weeks later in Kansas City and a career-ending injury the promising receiver Johnny Knox that's so gruesome that I'm not going to show it here you'll just have to look it up in short a 7 and3 start snowballed into an 8-8 finish and a mrip to the playoffs with a healthy Cutler making his return in 2012 the Bears filled the vacant OC position by promoting offensive line coach Mike Ty Nate Ty's father would allow Cutler to audible the line of scrimmage and the quarterback and play caller grew comfortable with each other in the off season this despite Ty understanding zero of C's jokes now to be fair you have to have a high IQ to understand Jay cuddler cuddler would also be re United with former Broncos teammate Brandon Marshall who will set the single season franchise record for receptions and yards this season with all this in mind the Bears exploded right away rising up to a jaw-dropping 7-1 start they had the highest point differential of any team through eight games a top two scoring defense and a league leading 28 takeaways everything peaked in week eight when the team dismantled the Tennessee Titans 51- 20 in Nashville the Bears scored the touchdown pass touchdown run pick six and the block punt touchdown in the exact same quarter Vibes were great ahead of a highly anticipated matchup against the 7-1 Houston Texans this was viewed by many as a possible Super Bowl preview Jake hutler missed the entire second half with a concussion and the Bears lost in a torrential downpour 13 to6 on their way to losing five of their last eight games to finish with a record of 10 and six in most seasons 10 and six is still good enough to make the playoffs and as long as the Rival Packers beat the Rival 9-6 Vikings in week 17 Chicago would punch their tickets back to the postseason the Vikings won on the walkoff field goal and the Bears fired loveby Smith and Mike Ty replacing them with Canadian football legend Mark tresman and Aaron chromer respectively so wait how did the Bears collapse after such a historic start first while the team was third in point scor through eight games much of it was owed to the amount of points the defense created in actuality the offense generated the fourth fewest yards per play in that span and were 25th in total yardage Cutler was again getting into it with an offensive coordinator to the point where the backup QB had to intervene just to get the two to get along second combine that with the defense while full of talented players on the wrong side of their 30s and maybe this wasn't a sustainable way of winning football games the team needed an actual offensive identity and a pass happppy NFL to truly compete for a Super Bowl especially since the next season was a contract year for Jay Cutler and in 2013 that's exactly what they got the team scored a staggering 445 points that season the most from any Bears team outside the Super Bowl winning 1985 Squad in addition this was only second in 2013 to the Broncos a team that set the single season record from points scored this time the offense did not need the defense to help mask it stats as they ranked third in yards per play in eighth in total yardage the sudden success for a team that had long lacked an offensive identity came from all the pieces clicking at the right time Matt Forte had a season with over 1300 rushing yards and over 500 receiving yards something no Chicago Bears since Walter pyton 30 years prior had ever done free agent tight end martelles Bennett came in racked up 759 yards and five touchdowns on his own helping solidify a tight end position that had largely been forsaken in the J Cutler era Brandon Marshall had himself another outstanding year as well but it was the breakout of second-year receiver Alshon Jeffrey that truly took the offense to the next level Jeffrey went from 24 catches 367 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season to 89 catches 1421 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in the sophomore season combining a monster sta statistical year with some of the most baffling catches you will ever see a receiver make if you think Jake hutler had a career season because of this you'd be right sort of now we did have a career-high passer rating That season his lowest sack rate since 2018 and by far the highest ESPN qbr of his entire career but he was in the middle of a heated quarterback controversy with backup Josh Macau in a few games maau filled in for an injured cuddler he had a mon ous stretch throwing for 13 touchdowns to just one interception he had even done something C had only done once up to that point lead the Bears to a victory over Green Bay many of the players wanted mown to keep his job over C even Brandon Marshall had sung a little phrase for the 34-year-old veteran so when head coach Mark tresman allowed cuddler to return to his starting role in week 15 against the Browns it didn't sit well with the locker room quarterback controversy be damned the Bears had an an amazing offense finally giving their defense the scoring help they've needed for years so is it bad if I tell you that I can't sing the same Praises about the bears' defense nothing close to it no Bears team has ever allowed more points and until the squad from the 17 game 2022 season no Bears team had allowed more yards it was as if it had to sacrifice being at the least a semi-competent defense just to have a real offense with that said the team was sitting at 8- six in a weak NFC North needing to win just one of the two remaining games to clinch the division the team's week six team match up against the Eagles did not showcase a playoff hungry team instead getting the gift of a 54-1 thrashing at Philadelphia now it would come down to a duel at home with the seven and seven and one Packers to decide the fate of the NFC North Packers Superstar quarterback Aaron Rogers was making his return from a left clavical fracture he suffered in week n game against the Bears at less than 100% though this was a prime opportunity for the Bears to write the wrongs to the past and return the Heartbreak this Wisconsin football team had given them for years when the game started it seemed like everything that could go right for the Bears did go right the defense caught Rogers napping with two early interceptions and looked to have gotten a third takeaway off him with a strip of the ball late in the second quarter but instead of pouncing on the ball the Bears defense acted as if the pass simply went incomplete Packers receiver Jared boyin would scoop up the ball then thanks to the Packers Sidelines screaming like banshees raised to the end zone in one of the craziest touchdowns you will ever see the game spiraled into a back and forth Affair before the Bears eventually found themselves up 28 to 20 early in the fourth quarter Green Bay escaped death when this Dart the tight end Andrew corus went through safety Chris kti's hands then cut the lead to one on an Eddy Lacy touchdown after a 5-minute drive from the Bears ended in a third and 17 jump ball that Alshon Jeffrey could not haul in the Packers used the next 5 and 1/2 minutes to drive to the Chicago 48 facing a critical fourth and eight with 46 seconds remaining if the defense could get one more stop the Bears would get back to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons Rogers gets the snap Blitz is on Rogers scrambles left he's got cob of the 10 to the to the end zone touchdown and a dagger oh my goodness an NFC North division championship dagger down 33 to 28 Jay Cutler and the Bears offense had 31 seconds and two timeouts to save their season Cutler connected with Martell's Bennett to bring Chicago to the Green Bay 45 One Time Out 24 seconds left a deep bomb to Alshon Jeffrey In The End Zone was broken up 16 seconds left Cutler found a wideopen Brandon Marshall at the Green Bay 27 and and as Marshall tried to adjust on the behind throw he could not haul it in 10 seconds left the Bears did still have that one time out left if they wanted to move the ball a little closer but cuddler wanted all the smoke this could potentially be his last throw as a Chicago Bear and he desired to make the most of it the ensuing Hail Mary landed just inside the end zone and into the arms of corner Sam Shields securing the NFC North for the Packers and delivering one of the most haunting losses in franchise history to the Chicago Bears Cutler himself played well for what it's worth and was a defensive collapse away from delivering the NFC North Crown to his Chicago Bears he was set to be a free agent when the New Year kicked in but he and the Bears quickly put any speculation to rest Chicago locked him down longterm with a contract extension worth 7 years and 126 million bucks many in Chicago media thought it was a mistake a big one this guy could not win you the biggest game they said C's bosses liked him more than the fans do they said however after a juggernaut season from the offense there was optimism in NFL circles for this team to make the playoffs as a wild card as long as Cutler stayed healthy and the defense matched the level of the offense all would be well and the good news was the offense and defense did 23rd in point scored 31st in points allowed the 2014 Chicago Bears finished 5 and 11 here's a sample of the chaos Chicago received in 2014 the most toxic year for Bears football ever star rookie Corner Kyle Fuller and martalis Bennett got into a fight at training camp when Bennett was enraged by how hard Fuller had grabbed him by the helmet Bennett would be suspended for just 5 days following the incident after an opening week loss to the Buffalo Bills the Bear's front office was furious at how Cutler handled his postgame press conference already questioning his leadership one game into his new deal after a loss to the Dolphins Brandon Marshall possibly let down from a Revenge game against his former team allegedly could be heard from the locker room shouting at both cuddler and kicker Robbie gold gold successfully made his only kick of the game so I wonder what that was all about Marshall also irked the Bears when he continuously made appearances on NFL Network as an analyst during the season according to Matt Forte seems a little hypocritical though when they don't talk to him about it in a two- game stretch between the Patriots and Packers the Bears became the first team to allow 50 points in consecutive games since the 1923 Rochester Jeffersons The Jeffersons were a team that stopped playing in 1925 in the Patriots game free agent S Lamar Houston tor's ACL while celebrating a sack on backup QB Jimmy garoppo the Bears were down 25 with just over 3 minutes left when this happened by the way after a week 13 loss to the Cowboys offensive play caller Aaron chromer had anonymously criticized Cutler to NFL Network reporter Ian rap report chromer then tearfully apologized to the Bears offense in a meaning about the comments but kler reportedly thought he was full of it speaking of which despite the team's many setbacks Cutler was on Pace to reach 4,000 passing yards an obstacle no Bears quarterback has ever reached he was benched after a terrible performance against the Saints in favor of Jimmy Clausen and then came back as the starter after Clausen suffered a concussion legendary Bears linebacker Lance Briggs who played with the team for all 12 seasons of his career said he had never seen more fighting in the lock room than under Mark tresman Briggs also claimed tresman would quote sit on the other side and pretend like he didn't see anything making this even more agonizing for Bears fans is in 2013 they had a chance to hire Future Super Bowl winning coach Bruce arens than with the Indianapolis Colts but when arens refused to keep defensive coordinator Ron Marinelli Chicago passed on him in favor of Mark tresman who along with Aaron chromer will be fired at the end of the 2014 season forget playoffs at this point the Bears need positivity in their locker room again this is where former Panthers and Broncos coach John Fox comes in initially Fox was indifferent on the status of cuddler even calling him Jake by accident in his introductory press conference Cutler was also getting his fifth offensive coordinator as a member of the Bears in Adam gase and understandably people were getting tired of giving him excuses in any case let me spoil you the rest of the John Fox era they don't make the playoffs in his three-year tenure and he'll be fired with a record of 14 and 34 but many Bears fans look upon Fox's time with the organization fondly sure they weren't winning much but Fox helped take a locker room as toxic as any in sports and fixed it players were appreciative of him even if it didn't result in more wins he made it feel like an actual work environment again as for cut he finished with a pass rating above 90 For The First Time in his career and he also led the league with four fourth quarter comebacks and four game winning drives incredibly Cutler finally got his second win against the Packers as well doing so in week 12 while spoiling a retirement ceremony for Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre and grifter since this game the Bears have gone 1- 15 against the Packers but as any Bears fan will tell you every win means something the Bears marginally improved the 6 and 10 and 2015 and in 2016 QB coach da L gains was promoted to OC colors struggled in an injury shorten season while the Bears would regress to a record of 3 and 13 and that was that in the off season the Bears parted ways with the guy he called qb1 after eight seasons together as Jay Cutler was released on March 9th 2017 his final record in Chicago was a perfectly balanced 51 and 51 after a brief retirement and and a season in Miami as a replacement to a seasonally injured Ryan tanhill Jay cuddler officially retired from the NFL for good the one thing that comes up when discussing his NFC North Legacy is his leadership or his alleged lack of Hall of Fame return specialist Devin Hester not only called cuddler the worst leader he's been around but partially blamed him for his lack of development as a wide receiver Martellus Bennett clearly did not think Cutler was the guy for the Bears either several of his teammates were infuriated that he seemingly did not try to reenter the 2010 NFC title game where he suffered the spraying MCL other teammates cited that he wouldn't speak up in situations where it was an Unwritten rule that quarterbacks speak up but in a 2012 game against the Packers many people saw cuddler as being too vocal in the middle of the second quarter he could be seen drawing a left tackle Jamarcus web even shoving him the side C would later apologize for the shove but not the yell which he saw as trying to light a motivational fire under web I guess it didn't really work seeing us color would be sacked seven times on the night but while many in the wide world of football see Cutler as a disinterested quarterback that could care less about the NFL or his teammates others saw a different side of him that's not discussed as much Cutler's Vanderbilt teammates will vouch for his tenacity one went so far as to claim he thought color was dead after a hit and yet he kept coming back to take more punishment and his teammates were grateful for that Brian eracer had criticized Cutler's play relative to the amount of money he was making but simultaneously had respect for the quarterback's perseverance tight end Zack Miller mentioned Cutler was a great teammate he would single out a motivational halftime speech Cutler delivered during a 2016 win against the Vikings Jay Cutler's last as the Chicago Bear when Chris kti was blamed as the scapegoat for the fourth and eight busted coverage in the bear season ending week 17 loss in 2013 Culler put in all of his support for his former teammate Coler also keeps up with the Bears way after his playing career so he still retains the soft spot for the team he grew up rooting for it seems like color's Dolphins teammates also enjoyed playing with him during his soulle season in Miami primarily Kenny Stills who admired him as both a player and a person guess that's what happens when you randomly have the game of a lifetime in a home Victory against the Tom Brady bich Le Dynasty Patriots there's a lot to J Cutler that people don't want to dedicate the time and day to reviewing that's what happens when you play for a big Market City like Chicago for a franchise whose greatest quarterback played before the invention of color TV he had the arm and the skill to become one of the elite guys but for reasons regarding play style bad coaching and Supporting Cast issues it never really came about in addition to Leading the league in interceptions twice with the franchise guys his only Pro Bowl appearance came as a member of the Broncos the Bears had a couple of winning seasons under his tenure but never truly Rose to the greatness of early Year's promise and succumbed to both lock room toxicity and mediocrity in his final years with the football club with the team's relative lack of success following color's release though time has healed some wounds for some bears faithful color holds many bears franchise records including completions attempts passing yards touchdowns and even quarterback wins he was announced by the team as one of its 100 greatest players which I'll leave for you to decide if that's a good thing or if it only happened because the team was desperate to fill the quarterback portion I will say someone's got to fill it though it's true that calling Jake cuddler the best QB the Bears have ever had isn't saying a lot but even Mountain needs a king his time with the Bears was many things but boring a disappointment sure frustrating for the locals Andre staven he's a Packers Legend possibly yeah but people were talking about those Bears teams and they were talking about Jay cuddler sometimes Sports aren't just about the wins losses or record-breaking moments but how you play that gets people to talk the drama we love living vicariously through the drama and the toxicity just ask anyone who watches reality TV or frequence on Reddit Cutler personified that for the worst and the best but he wasn't concerned about how the outside world thought about him ultimately the player and the team he led Unleashed a level of chaos few in the NFL could ever match these bears and this quarterback were a heart attack on the city but it was a heart attack worth waking up to [Music] [Music]
