uh [Applause] [Music] it wasn't was it [Music] good morning everyone how you doing it's paul here from unusual things now today i have come to eastbourne and i'm just having a look for the final resting place of tommy cooper that amazing magician internationally known we all know him don't we we have to we got to know tommy cooper anyway um now before i have done a video at mort lake crematorium where he was cremated and i've mentioned him obviously in that video um but today we've come here to a cemetery where his ashes are interred and there is a headstone for it so we've come here today to have a look through for tommy cooper i'll tell you a little bit more about him right now thomas frederick cooper was born on the 19th of march 1921 in carphili glamorgan he was delivered by the woman who owned the house in which the family were lodging his parents were thomas h cooper a welsh recruiting sergeant in the british army and later a coal miner and catherine gertrude thomas's english wife and devon when he was eight years old an aunt bought him a magic set and he spent hours perfecting his tricks in the 1960s his brother david born in 1930 opens dnz cooper's magic shop in slough buckinghamshire the shop later moved to eastbourne in east sussex and was run by david's daughter sabrina after school cooper became a shipwright in southampton in hampshire in 1940 he was called up as a trooper in the world horse guards serving for seven years in the british army he joined montgomery's desert rats in egypt cooper became a member of the nafi the navy army air force institute entertainment party and developed an act around his magic tricks interspersed with comedy one evening in cairo during a sketch in which he was supposed to be in costume that required a pif helmet which he had forgotten cooper reached out and borrowed a fez from a passing waiter which got huge laughs he wore a fez when performing after that the prop later being described as an icon of the 20th century comedy cooper was influenced by lauren hardy will haye max miller bob hope and robert alban in 1947 cooper got his big break with myth ferry who at the time was a trombonist in a band called the jackdaws who booked him to appear as the second spot comedian in a show starring the sand dance act marquise and the dance of the seven vales cooper then began two years of arduous performing including a tour of europe and a stint of pantomime playing one of cinderella's ugly sisters cooper rapidly became a top line on variety with his turn as the conjurer whose tricks never succeeded but it was his television work that raised him to national prominence after his debut on the bbc talent show new to you in march 1948 he began starring in his own shows and was popular with audiences for nearly 40 years notably through his work with london weekend television 1968-1972 and with thames television 1973-1980 thanks to his many television shows during the mid 70s he was one of the most recognizable comedians in the world cooper was a very heavy cigar smoker up to 40 a day as well as an excessive drinker he experienced a decline in his health suffering a heart attack during the late 70s whilst performing a show in rome three months later he was back on television in night out at the london casino by 1980 his drinking meant that thames television would not give him another starring series and cooper's half hour was his last he did continue to appear as a guest on another television show however he did work with eric sykes on two thames productions in 1982. cooper got married to gwen henty and nicosia cyprus on 24th february 1947. she died in 2002 they had two children thomas who was born in 1956 and became an actor under the name thomas henty and died in 1988 and victoria from 1967 until his death cooper also had a relationship with his personal assistant mary fieldhouse who wrote about it in a book for the love of tommy now of course we know the drill don't we when we see one of these we see if we can go and have a look inside let's uh let's go and try it shall we we tried we'll have a look see if there's one more door wow look at that these are the things that i like to sort of see whilst i'm walking around just looking at things and there's quite another big one over here which has caught my eye sorry but we're going on a bit of a detour now because um why not we're here we've traveled a long way we're up early let's have a look let's see what's going on can't really freak out too much in london marriott sarah i don't know the writings really sort of faded away but wow look at the railings around it and then look at this beautiful view over here and the big church there look slot that side thank you very much what a lovely audience well i must say you have been a good audience and i like the clothes level mate i've had a pain here all day look at that so that's all the information there on tommy cooper now what i didn't add is of course that he died on stage at the royal variety performance i think it was in 1984 if memory serves me well i'm sure you'll correct me if i'm wrong that's just going off the top of my head because uh i can't remember yeah so what i you know he had a heart attack on stage in cairo so it was a near miss then then of course actually dying on stage now seeing the persona that we see of tommy cooper i can imagine that's probably the way he would have wanted to go i can't say knowing him because i didn't know him but the persona of him is what i'm going on here it's probably the way that a man like that would just want to go you know doing his thing making people laugh and sadly people did think it was part of the comedy act um they thought that he was just sliding down the curtains and and it was such a shame really anyway i think i found it now this one was a very very hard one to find look at this look at this place here beautiful beautiful scenery but let's have a look down here rest in peace greatly loved and sadly missed thomas frederick cooper 19th march 1921 to the 15th of april 1984 and this is his son who passed away who was an actor as well his son thomas john cooper 19th first 1956 to 13th of 8th 13th 8th 1988 it's unique mother gwendolyn victoria cooper 1920 it's 2002. so they were cremated and their ashes interred here but um wow you know now it never ceases to amaze me um you know i've done a lot of these now and you guys have come with me all the time and tommy cooper legend international comedian so well known all over the world especially because of the redfest and he's interred here you know his ashes are interred here but it's just a shame that there's nothing more for him really you know the career the life that he had the amount of laughs that he gave people and you know the way he's remembered is his ashes interred and there's just a little you know little plaque there which he's probably laughing at you know what he's like he'd have that look he'd come on stage he'd look and he just get the audience roaring with laughter now i want to say a massive thank you to tommy cooper because i know how many laughs he gave people and how much fun he gave people over the years and he will never be replaced you'll never find a magician or comedian that could walk on stage look at an audience with those big blue eyes and his black hair sticking out the size of his fez and just make people laugh just by looking at him and bless you tommy you were an amazing amazing man there we have it tommy cooper's ashes and turd there and like i said really it's it's sad because um who he was what he was what he was about and like i said he was probably standing there if he had his way just laughing that they've left that for him me personally i would like to see something a bit more for someone like him um but we don't get that these days do we we don't get the the people that like we have back then the entertainers they were proper good entertainers and uh you know these days it's a bit different but there you go that's life we have to move at the time so we can't all live in the past but it's nice to reminisce isn't it it's always good to have a little look and a little think about things anyway from me spawn in this beautiful cemetery look at it on an early saturday morning half past seven peaceful as always i should bid you farewell don't forget if you do like the video today please leave me your comments i love reading your comments so any interactions you've ever had with tommy cooper at all or any uh
