Tommy’s NEW Hughes Converter unboxing and BULLYING Mustangs with the 55

so we got parts oh yeah what do we get well i got this all set up i'm gonna do an unboxing video i think this is tommy's converter from hughes oh yeah i remember pete he was working on that hell yeah let's cut this open see what all is in there which one do you carry that stick in here get that out of here grandma's gonna kick your butt scrappy i know it was you oh stickers what's that it's a transmission keychain let me see this ah that's sweet what do you got there gold stickers 50th anniversary nice pro ssx gap guaranteed does that work on you a gap guarantee yeah unless somebody else got the cap guaranteed pretty much seems like oh a box in a box see i watched nick taylor's video the other day and he got a box inside of a box too nick taylor's already done a unboxing video yeah he got that gap guarantee too what yep just the other day shut the bed well then we got to make our video better than nick taylor's it can't be outdone like that i don't think he got a key chain though yeah that's what happens what is this grabbers more stickers got instructions because i know we're gonna need those just what we needed another converter i've got like i don't know how many converters laying over there i need to start getting rid of them so this converter is pretty much identical to mine but i think it has a tighter stator than what i had in mind good because yours was a little on the loosey-goosey side yeah but it was good for back into the track [Music] races [Music] in all its glory numbers mean anything no numbers don't mean anything that's what's inside that counts but the numbers tell you what's inside they definitely mean something i think it says 15.45 that's a little bit more aggressive than yours was yeah just by a little his probably isn't going to be on as much boost as mine we'll see i told him to make a little bit tighter than mine was i'm sure he did just that we are so incredibly grateful for the help and support that we receive from vickers and hughes vickers performance transmissions and alliance takes care of all of our transmissions and just built this completely brand new power glide for tommy's truck the combination of vickers being right here close to home and hughes's support with converter and dump valve technology unmatched it's made the difference in our program like night and day pete nichols with hughes performance is one of the most knowledgeable and helpful people we've ever met in the racing industry when we met pete at pri in 2019 he asked us if there's anything that he could do to help us and he's been nothing but an asset to our program ever since teaming up with vickers and hughes has been an incredible opportunity for wait oh you gotta be me [Music] hey kenny's here i know he messaged me i communicate with kenny he's my my uh sidekick you know what between kenny and beaterbaum i'm starting to feel some kind of way this is getting out of hand everybody else knows more about what's going on around here that i do communication something that you're not very good at so as kenny got started out in the trailer he found out he needed some nails for his air nailer and billy needed to go to newark to go pick up some new batteries for his rc truck they're in yeah i paid for them like a week ago all right well let's go get some of these air nails we'll go get your batteries all right yeah we'll just stop by how much time you got kenny before i need to have these back here you need them right away uh not right away but the sooner the better all right let's go i feel like every errand is just an excuse to drive one of our vehicles especially this one so i made a little jet change in this the other day i jetted the back up three jet numbers and changed the power valve in the front and i also i swiped tommy's two inch two inch carburetor spacer it runs a little better what's up well i wonder if that's the same bull that hates cars he's looking [Music] that might not be the same bull nah the one they had a couple years ago if i'd stop and rev it up at him he'd just jump up off the ground and snort and kick and raise him he hated this car it must be a different bull he's probably a steak now that's what he gets for hitting on 55 ships [Applause] [Music] [Applause] these things are so smooth not bad just fired up and driving up the road yeah we didn't let it warm up really this car's raced there a couple of times hadn't it yep that's where it all started mom and dad used to be in the 55 6 and 7 chevy club years ago and they would host the meetings down here at bowman chevrolet used to be walters chevrolet and then it was bowman chevrolet down here in hebron and then they would rid the track every once in a while and that was where i first went to the drag strip was in trails and dad was racing this car i remember he got to the finals one day and this i was pissed because he had to run a damn motorcycle in the final the motorcycle beating aggravated the out of me how old were you just barely old enough to remember i don't know that's probably 10. there's the sticker so we stopped down this little hardware store not far from our house we go in there to get these nails for kenny you're not gonna believe the mask they made us wear in there do we get to keep these billy put his on i just held mine over my mouth i'll be damned if i'm gonna wear something like that in a store this is a mask they gave me this must be american made [Music] kenny just texted me he said he found the nails are you me yeah all for nothing i had a good deal with that jackass in there for no reason now we've got 5 000 nails for no reason [Music] well knowing your mom she'll find a reason to use 5 000 damn nails take him in there and give them to him so we can go get your batteries so i'm sitting out here in a parking lot at southgate shopping center down in heath waiting on billy he went into the hobby shop to get his new batteries for his rc truck hopefully we get that fired up this weekend and vicki just texted me we gotta stop at kroger's and pick up her quick list so we'll do that on the way home hopefully by the time we get back kenny's got all that flooring nailed down damn billy's been in there forever i'm gonna go see what the hell he's [Music] doing [Music] they should last a little longer and they have a little bit higher voltage looks like they're like my last one we're gonna text her to tell her that's what she makes me do i don't you can't just call the number just do it cause she'll i don't know what she does but this is the way she makes me do it here we go not my fault they sell me aids right beside six cylinders every day i hope your mom didn't have any eggs first of all look at the new ramp on your trailer door what really right right as i went to step up on it billy went to flip it up to see how it flips and put me right on my you fell face planted oh my god right on my bad knee on your gimpy legs so yeah he had a piece of wood left and you replaced this because the old one was bad perfect man that was nice of him because he's gonna get screwed to put that back down good i gotta get my nova washed [Applause] drumroll i hate track of dirt in here holy smokes that looks nice even in the bathroom really well except for the trim the steps all trimmed down there's gonna be trim all the way around the edges nice dude that looks good yeah and then i'm gonna have little like uh you know like we're not falling through the floor no yeah i'll have little rugs you know wipe your feet when you come in and stuff yeah we'll definitely need that yeah well you think june pup isn't that nice look online and take measurements for camper couches and see what's gonna fit or not and a new water tank well this is looking great huh this is looking great oh i know oh man i got the floor dirty that last piece gave him trouble because remember when the kids backed the golf cart into the walls so the walls kind of caved in so trying to cut that piece of wood so it's curved billy did that yeah i told him the very first the very first time billy loaded the golf cart for him in a trailer he ran he ran he was backing the golf cart in here and freaking hit the wall look at that it was a brand new trailer very first time loading the golf cart and billy smashes into the bathroom wall with it they were little hell he'd still do it today all right so i guess it's time to actually do some kind of work today we've been screwing around running errands and doing all kinds of harassing people and bullying mustangs and whatever but now it's time to do some serious work so i got this carburetor all tore apart last night i had it soaking i've got the main body and everything all cleaned up check it out now the situation here is this is what this thing looked like when he dropped it off here last night i took it all apart and let all the parts and pieces soak and soldered solvent last night cleaned them all up today blew everything out and it's ready to go but this is what you get when you use pump e85 and you let it sit in the carburetor too long so we've got the main body and the base plate all cleaned up gasket surfaces are all nice and clean got the air bleeds and everything's all blown out cleaned out i got the bowls all cleaned out they were full of slimy snot looking i got that all cleaned out there cleaned out the needle and seats cleaned up the metering blocks blew them all out they're looking pretty decent what i like to do is i i'll use a bucket of soldered solvent you can see how dirty it is in there but i'll pour a clean bucket of solvent and then i'll use i like using a sea foam spray top engine cleaner and lube this stuff works really nice to soften up soft parts and it puts a nice protective film on everything so that if the carburetor sits for a while everything's got a little lubrication on it and i like using that stuff what are you doing junior i'm not here to help you all right well come over here and help take some video of me screwing with this car here yeah all right so we need to put the power valve back in the front metering block that's the first thing now on a blow through carburetor the power valve works the opposite way that naturally aspirated carburetor would when boost pressure rises which i'm a little bit curious because i don't see the the extensions on the bowls so i'm gonna have to ask him about that that may be part of his problem he's having but when the when the boost pressure pressurizes the carburetor bowl through the bowl vent the fuel that that's in the front bowl here will be under pressure the same as the boost pressure and it forces the power valve open right here if you look at this can you zoom in there and see that see usually vacuum holds them closed they work the opposite direction but in this case under under a blow through carburetor the boost pressure actually forces that power valve open right there and then that allows fuel to pass through the needle and seat from the bowl through the uh the power valve and through these channel restrictions you see these holes drilled right here there's two of them one there and one there and that supplies additional fuel to the main wells uh in addition to your main jets right here and then that fuel travels up the main well up these two holes right here that line up with the holes in the main body here and here that go to your boosters and this has got annular boosters of course but it's important in a blow through carburetor application that you have the proper bowl vent extensions because the longer that bowl vent is it seems like it puts a little bit more uh boost pressure to the bowls and if they're too short like these are right here they're just stock if they're like that the engine will tend to lean out a little bit and the boost pressure the incoming air inlet boost pressure tends to bypass the bowl and just goes right down the throat of the carburetor so that's something i need to talk to him about yeah i wonder if he has those tubes that extend well i don't know they weren't on it when he brought it here that could be a big issue that could be i remember we had that problem with mine it was doing that same thing yeah if yours if it loses the bowl vent extensions if they come loose i guess you're leaning it it goes way lean and that's what he's saying the problem here with this cat is he doesn't really have everything that he should have as far as the boost pressure data air inlet temperature data air fuel ratio data he don't have none of that he's just screwing around on 12 pounds of boost you can get by with some well i mean yeah you can get by with a little bit of you can get by with a little bit of that half-assery without really blowing up yeah on just 12 pounds of boost but when you start screwing around like we are up around 30 in all honesty at 15 to 20 pounds it starts to get serious you know you've got to pay attention to what you're doing so he's just getting his feet wet with this thing but he's trying to blow something up but he hasn't yet he hasn't succeeded yet but he will eventually if he doesn't wisen up so there we go we've got our metering block assembled and we've got the power valve installed properly and we're ready to put the front bowl on so let's see that would be this one we got to make sure we get that on there right you always want to make sure your accelerator pump arm is down underneath the the uh linkage arm there that's important don't want to screw that up if it's not your throttle pedal will feel real funny that's the only way billy knows the throttle pedal doesn't feel right he's like dad there's something wrong yeah yeah i probably figured probably figured out what it was i know exactly what it means when the throttle pedal feels weird now that seafoam stuff right there puts a nice protective coating on everything keeps everything lubed up i like to put a little bit of it in the needle and seats if you're going to clean one out at the end of the season it's a good idea to get a can of that seafoam and just spray that stuff inside the bowls and everything after you clean it out because it makes a world of difference all right there's the backside done his bowl gaskets were junk so i'm putting new bowl gaskets on but i managed to save the metering block gaskets i like those red gaskets better than the blue ones they seem to hold up better okay that up there well this carburetor didn't have a it didn't have a [Music] boost reference power valve in the back which i'm not sure i like that now this was originally a csu which kevin van oy builds those and i very much like kevin's carburetors i very much like his theory and his thought processes behind how they operate and how he sets them up i agree with what he does one hundred thousand percent and kevin always puts boost reference power valves front and rear and there's a reason for that mostly in my opinion it's you know due to the fact that the power valves operate differently than they do in a naturally aspirated carburetor and when the boost pressure rises they open and without a power valve in the rear as soon as you open the secondaries it's going to dump all the fuel all at once and if you have to pedal it or anything i don't know i just don't think that that's a i just don't think that's a wise decision but that's how apd set it up for whatever reason he he took it to well he told me apd is like 20 minutes from his house or right up the road from his house and so he bought this at a swap meet it was a csu and they took it to apd and i think they put the fancy billet base plate and the billet metering blocks on it which that's fine but i really wish you would have sent it back to kevin at csu sometimes kevin gets busy well i mean that's why we got different carburetors because he was so busy and then but this time even apd's five or six weeks out so he couldn't he couldn't get anything done with them and they're right up the street from him so it's here it's done it's fixed it's all lubricated cleaned up sea foam guys if you want to screw with carburetors especially e85 or methanol you want some seafoam on your workbench all right i'll call him i'll let him know it's ready to be picked up all right guys that's going to do it for today i didn't go to a lot of detail on that carburetor i didn't show all the ins and outs on it mostly because one it's not my carburetor two those gentlemen that build these carburetors for a living probably wouldn't appreciate me showing every little thing that they do and why they do it i do understand what they're doing and but i also understand it's their livelihood and you know just the same thing with me i wouldn't really appreciate somebody out there showing people how to quickly and efficiently and easily fix their driveways if i'm the one out there fixing them for a living so i'm not going to get into a whole lot of detail about that carburetor just for those reasons but it is what it is it's ready to go i called him or i sent him a text message so but i think mostly what the problem was with that carburetor is those bowl vents are missing it needs to have the bowl vents maybe he's got him maybe he doesn't if he doesn't he needs to put them on there um let's see what else did i want to say all right the furnace quit running back there so it's a little bit quieter but i just want to thank everybody for watching the channel and supporting my family supporting my kids if gina is working overtime down there to get that stuff knocked out for us as quick as she can so just be patient guys if you gotta if you're waiting on an order keep in mind we're not uh we're not
