foreign ation brought to you by DPS construction your local concrete experts check them out at DPS construction.net and I got a special guest with me today but before we dive into a five-time national champion and College Football Hall of Famer if you missed my interviews last week with Prince amukamara and Roy hallou go back and check them out and then in a couple days I'll be releasing my interview with Tony white or Marcus Satterfield I'm going to interview them both I'm not sure which one's going to come first I may throw Tony out there first and then Marcus in a couple of weeks but check those things out in the near future but today I want to get to our special guest like I mentioned College Football Hall of Famer three-time national champions a head coach Mr Tom Osborne how you doing coach I'm fine Adam well I appreciate you joining me and my first question right off the top we got a new head coach in Nebraska so what are your first impressions of Matt Rule and what do you think the biggest thing he'll try to improve on in year one as Nebraska's new head coach well I've uh I've interacted with Matt several times in the last few months and I've been impressed with him and anyway you some people say well you've been impressed before and yeah that's true but the things I like about Matt are the number one he's a very hard worker and uh people may say well what's what's so new about that but Nebraska's got some uniqueness about it in that uh we have 1.8 million people and so we might have uh well three or four uh fairly highly rated recruits in the state and then some others that are potential uh great players but they're not there yet whereas a lot of schools are going to have maybe 15 or 20. uh highly rated players within a short distance and so you have to work hard at recruiting and I think you've done that and um I like the idea that he's uh he's going to uh probably do a few things with the with the tight end and a full back I don't know if that's going to be the the whole part of his offense but I think he's going to do part of that I think that he understands it you have to be able to run the ball and maintain some ball control that one thing that we I remember we we played a game I think last year where Illinois at the ball 100 snaps and we had it 50 and uh that where's your defense down and uh so you have to be able to grind the ball out at times and then of course you want to have a good passing game too but so I think his approach has been good and so I like he's a likable guy I think he'll relate well to players and uh so as I would say my my impressions are definitely very positive all right Husker fans coach Osborne mentioned the fullback being back in Nebraska office like you said it's not going to be the be-all end-all but if you're like me and you're excited to see a fullback in the Nebraska offense smash that like button real quick I'm curious your thoughts on Coach Prime Dion Sanders obviously we're going to be playing at CU week two he's an exciting guy he's an electrifying guy personality had great success at Jackson State do you think coach Prime in the next three to four years let's say it's going to take time to build Colorado back up all over he's overhauled 95 of that roster it seems but in the next three to four years do you think he can have Colorado especially with USC UCLA gone from the pack what I assume would be the pac-10 at that time okay do you think he can have Colorado in the conversation at least or potentially competing for championships in the pac-10 sometime in the next three to four years well anything's possible I I I know that he has lost a lot of players and brought a lot of players in and I guess you'd Wonder a little bit as does that amount of turnover is that going to be good or not so good and obviously he thinks it's what he needed to do but uh a lot a lot of change a lot of volatility and uh you know he does have a track record John Jackson State and I'm assuming he's a he's a good coach and I I've also heard talks about Colorado trying to go to the big 12 and been in the back 12 or back 10 as you say if they lose another team or two which they could like Oregon or Washington uh they're they're in in big trouble and maybe uh I wouldn't say they've been a fall apart completely but it's gonna be hard for them to survive without the Marquee schools so um we'll have to see here and I would say Colorado's in a little bit of a volatile situation right now as far as where where they're going to end up all right ladies and gentlemen real quick just so you know the care the website's coming out I've been promoting it for a while it's August 15th August 15th just over a week carrickerchronicles.com will be launching uh you can check out all character Chronicles episodes The Big Ten show that we've been doing lately as well myself and my co-host Jeff turn everything on 93 7 the ticket it's gonna be a lot of stuff okay Conor Hayden from corn craze is going to be on the site John Johnson who's not boring at all quite entertaining Ashley spitznoggled her awesome artwork will be on the website as well there's going to be merchandise a fan of the week's section eventually and where are they now section for past Huskers and what they're up to now and so much more so stay tuned for that website to launch August 15th now coach Osborne you know I'm I've been on both sides of the mic I've been asked questions as a player I'm asking questions as a member of the media now but I wanted to ask you this question all right because obviously we all wish Scott Frost nothing but the best he's a Husker Legend okay and I do predict one day he's going to come back to Memorial Stadium and Husker fans are going to clap for him that's my prediction I don't know when that'll be but I predict that okay we were all rooting for Scott but here's my question why do you think the Scott Frost era unfortunately didn't go quite the way we had all hoped well it's a little harder to say I I think he went through a very difficult time in that he um he came on the tail end of the not very successful recruiting regime from the goats previously so it wasn't like he was adult a a real good deck and then he had kovid and the thing that was uh was a little puzzling was that if you looked at this score again and three quarters Scott would have had a pretty good record but for whatever reason they didn't seem to be able to hang in there in the fourth quarter and they they lost a lot of games and as you know it's uh this is a business of what have you done lately and um so it's really hard to stay employed if you have four four losing seasons and um but I think Scott did a lot of good things and uh I I know that social media is always brutal and uh some of some of the stuff that you see in here although I'm not on social media is a little bit over the top and so I wish God the best and uh you know I had great success at Central Florida and turned a program around that had won zero games before the year before we got there and I think it went about six and six and then when I defeated and uh so uh any had done a very good job as an assistant out in Oregon as an offensive coordinator there's a lot of great points there and again we were Scott Frost nothing but the best wherever he lands up with his next job opportunity all right now I want to look back at some of the teams that you coached in your opinion what's the best team you ever had that maybe didn't win the national title was it 82 83 93 I mean in your opinion what team sticks out in your mind well probably 82-83 we were 12-1 we lost the game back to the Penn State on their home field and uh there were a couple calls there everywhere and younger way certainly yeah and uh and and so if you win if you win that game which we certainly could have I would have imagined we would have been in the conversation for a national championship and then of course 83 we went down and played Miami um well was their home field too that was one thing that a lot of times people didn't realize the Orange Bowl for a long time was in Miami Stadium and um I remember talking Howard schnellenberger and he said you know he figured that uh playing in Miami and particularly that time of year it was about a 10 point advantage because we're becoming a lot of humidity levels of 10 15 percent in Nebraska and you'd be going into 85 90 95 humidity in Miami it wasn't the heat it was the uh it was the humidity and we for whatever reason fell behind I think we were down 17 to nothing early in the game and we kept calling back Mike was here got hurt and then we ended up going for two points at the end and didn't didn't quite get it done I I knew what they would be in I knew they'd be a tight man-to-man defense and the guy was covering Irving fryer on a slant pattern for some reason came off of him and got a fingertip on the ball that was going to Jeff Smith in the flat and so is this one of those things I think probably most of the time we convert that two points but in that case we didn't and um but and I felt I felt good about those two teams because they knew we played at a high level and probably the the third team that I would say certainly would be in that category would be a 93 team because we we played and played well we were undefeated and went down and played Florida State in Florida and uh I remember you know coaches sometimes complain about officiating him and this is not an alibi we didn't win the game but we sent the film in the conference Commissioners and uh they're an independent grading body and I said tell me what you think and they came back they said what were the 13 bad calls and they gave him and 10 went against Nebraska we had a return for a touchdown and was called back and and they had a potential fumble to one and at the end zone and we recovered it was an inner awarded a touchdown so it was close and they they had a great thing they had a lot of great players and uh I was I was very proud of our team that year the only thing that's unfortunate is those guys a lot of them to developers was one of them that didn't have another chance and that was their last chance at a national championship and so I'd say those three teams there even though we didn't win the national championships we played at a pretty high level and uh those were all very good good teams that did didn't get the championship all right last question I got for you and I wanted to ask you this question really since I was about 12. all right so after the 97 season and the Orange Bowl win over Peyton Manning in Tennessee okay it took you a while to place your vote on the coaches poll ballot that night all right now I can speculate you guess but why did it take you so long to cast your vote that night yeah I I don't I didn't know that it took a long time but I what I what I did after every game I would create the film and it usually would take me till uh oh midnight one o'clock two o'clock in the morning and uh but I I voted and I I don't know an apology and apologetically I voted for Nebraska because if you looked at that Tennessee team at Peyton Manning they had Fearless price they had three or four first round second round picks in the NFL and uh very talented and I think I think certainly that Michigan had a good team that year too they played um they played out in the Rose Bowl against Washington State and uh so I thought we played played very well that night and we had to play we had to play an extra game we had the playoffs in the Big 12 we had a banana we played Texas A M down in San Antonio and uh in the Big Ten at that time they didn't have a playoff in that conference so we ended up playing Cleveland one more game against a good opponent so um I I guess I I voted for Nebraska as expected I'm sure Joe paternal voted for Penn State and uh but anyway Joe and I are good friends and uh and they they won a couple of national championships later on and I was glad to see him do that the last question I got for you all right I'm not going to ask for a specific win loss total or anything like that my question is simply this do you think Nebraska goes to a bowl game this year well I would think of the odds would be very good they would um I think I think the talent level certainly probably isn't what it is and four or five of the top schools in the country but couldn't I think we have some good players and I think we have a good coaching staff probably the big question will be just how quickly uh Matt Rule and his staff can can get everybody doing what they want to get done because you're when you come in new there's a pretty massive teaching project and some of that goes on in Spring ball but then you get new players in their transfers or freshmen and and so as a result you've got a lot to get done in a short time and I expect that they'll improve steadily throughout the season because of that process and I'd be a little surprised if they didn't go to a bowl game but who knows all right coach well I appreciate your time thank you for joining me Husker fans comment below comment below let me know um obviously I hope you enjoyed this interview let me know if you enjoyed it but also let me know Facebook Twitter Youtube
